Engineering Novel Biomimetic Models Of Equine Host-Microbe Interactions, Lynn M. Leedhanachoke Jan 2025

Engineering Novel Biomimetic Models Of Equine Host-Microbe Interactions, Lynn M. Leedhanachoke

Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science

One major limitation to the study of equine disease is the lack of in vitro models that accurately reflect the dynamic physiology of the horse. Thus, there is a pressing need to develop in vitro systems that recapitulate diverse equine tissue and organ microenvironments. To overcome this deficiency, we developed multiple biomimetic equine organoid systems that can be employed for a variety of investigations aimed at resolving outstanding questions in infectious disease pathogenesis, therapeutic development and drug metabolism, host defense mechanisms, immune-modulated disease, and equine developmental biology. Our innovative platform incorporates novel equine intestinal enteroid and airway organoid models derived …

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

This research examined whether livestock exhibition could be used to foster grit in youth across rural, micropolitan, and metropolitan communities. More specifically, the researcher sought to evaluate the impact an innovative livestock exhibition program had on youth resilience. Through partnerships with 4-H clubs and agricultural organizations, the initiative encourages community-driven involvement, allowing youth to take ownership of their growth and development. The program utilized agricultural animal husbandry experiences as a mechanism for youth development, exploring the broader impact of livestock engagement on character-building. By assessing the outcomes of these experiences, the research highlights the trials and tribulations associated with fostering …

Mapping The Impact Of Leadership Training: A Ripple Effects Mapping Of The Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association’S First Leadership Academy, Kelly May

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

This research study evaluates the first Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association (KEHA) Leadership Academy using the participatory, qualitative evaluation tool Ripple Effects Mapping (REM). This study explored the impact and outcomes of the training, both intended and unintended.

REM is a participatory evaluation method that begins with appreciative inquiry, then continues with a group discussion where stories are “mapped” or illustrated in real time. Using the Theming and Rippling Method of REM, the research team coded the information on site with inductive theming and those themes were then shared and confirmed with the group. After the event, the mapped data was …

The agricultural industry continues to be one of the most dangerous career fields in the United States of America with compact agricultural equipment being a common source for casualties in the industry. The primary focus of this work is to develop new technology that improves operational safety of compact agricultural equipment through the use of low-cost embedded electronics. This work presents the design of three systems in alignment with this goal.

The first system aims to integrate electrical intelligence and passive safety monitoring into the power distribution system of a small piece of agricultural equipment. The system known as the …

Impacts Of Utilizing Reverse Osmosis Concentrate On Mashing, Fermentation, And Water Use In Bourbon Whiskey Production, Ryan C. Sarhan Jan 2025

Impacts Of Utilizing Reverse Osmosis Concentrate On Mashing, Fermentation, And Water Use In Bourbon Whiskey Production, Ryan C. Sarhan

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

This thesis addresses the feasibility of reusing reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) in the bourbon whiskey fermentation processes. Initial work compared laboratory-scale mashing and fermentation methods, demonstrating that simultaneous saccharification and fermentation reliably reflects industrial-scale processes, with lower complexity and process time. Building upon this, laboratory and distillery-scale experiments demonstrated that reusing ROC in the mashing and fermentation steps does not negatively impact ethanol yields. ROC produced by systems with a water softener was found to significantly increase mash rheology, suggesting a need for potential process adjustments. Softened ROC also altered the production of flavor-influencing volatile congeners. Under worst case conditions, …

The Unconstitutionality Of Governor Youngkin's Felon Re-Enfranchisement Scheme (Or Lack Thereof): An Examination Of Hawkins V. Youngkin'S Challenge To Virginia's Current Felon Re-Enfranchisement Scheme, Olivia Rovin

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Note argues that Governor Youngkin’s felon re-enfranchisement “scheme” violates the Constitution. Ultimately, I will be evaluating the argument made in Hawkins v. Youngkin, formerly known as Nolef Turns v. Youngkin, noting its strengths and its weaknesses. Part I describes both American history and Virginia’s specific history of denying people convicted of felonies their right to vote. It also details the Supreme Court case, Richardson v. Ramirez, in which the Court held that denying people convicted of a felony the right to vote is constitutional under the Equal Protection Clause. Part I also gives a brief history …

For The Right To Repair Oneself: Cybernetic Imds And The Plight Of Manufacturer Abandonment, Kathy Bacuta

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

One in four people in the United States are disabled, making them the country’s largest minority. Yet they are well-known as the forgotten minority because they are often overlooked by governments and international organizations, and are rarely included in diversity and equity discussions. This is clear in how little the United States fights for the rights of the disabled. The disability aid and big pharma industries have been accused of being parasitic, the public has been accused of being unaccommodating, and the state and federal government has been accused of being unhelpful towards supporting the lives of the disabled. However, …
