A Dog Tail: To Trust Or Not To Trust, Victoria A. Denishchich, Christa C. Christ
A Dog Tail: To Trust Or Not To Trust, Victoria A. Denishchich, Christa C. Christ
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Trust plays an important role in relationships and social functioning while also influencing communication, cooperation, and emotional well-being. Previous research has found that dogs enhance social relationships, approachability, and perceptions of safety and friendliness in everyday interactions. However, not much is known about how the effect dogs have on perceptions of trust applies when photographs are used. Such info is essential given the amount of online social interaction that occurs in society today. This current study examined whether the presence of a dog in a photo affects our trust levels in strangers. In Study 1, 74 participants viewed photos of …
Technology Integration In Online Feminist Pedagogy, Xinyue Ren
Technology Integration In Online Feminist Pedagogy, Xinyue Ren
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Feminist pedagogy refers to a liberatory way of teaching to develop democratic and transformative learning experiences in which students can be empowered to make a social change (Grissom-Broughton, 2020). Previous research showed that feminist pedagogy was often used to guide course design and development in various disciplines, such as music, art, language, and environmental education (Cannizzo, 2021; Grissom-Broughton, 2020; Jespersen, 2014; Springgay & Zaliwska, 2017). For example, in music education, instructors increased the representations of multicultural voices in course materials and applied in-depth discussions and essays as learning assessments to develop critical and reflective thinking among students. In a feminist-oriented …

Addressing Anti-Black Racism In Library And Information Science Curriculum: A Canadian-Centric Learning Model, Amber Matthews
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Canadian communities are facing a crisis of inequity, and library service providers must do more to respond to the causal conditions of anti-Black and other forms of systemic racism (Black & Mehra, 2023). Beginning in 2022, the first known Canadian MLIS course, Anti-Racism in Library and Information Science, was piloted at Western University. It aimed to allow students to engage with transformative and collaborative anti-racism frameworks relevant to the Canadian library sector and MLIS curriculum. The one-semester (13-week) course was offered once each summer in 2022 and 2023. The multi-faceted course aimed to equip students with community-based approaches to learning …

The Time Is Now For Oral Health To Embrace Trauma-Informed Care, Carlos Smith, Ruth Bravo-Anez Med, Ncc, Shelvia English Phd
The Time Is Now For Oral Health To Embrace Trauma-Informed Care, Carlos Smith, Ruth Bravo-Anez Med, Ncc, Shelvia English Phd
Journal of the American College of Dentists
Trauma-informed care (TIC) starts with a comprehension of trauma and the recognition of its profound impact on individuals and their well-being.1 Trauma is pervasive and affects almost everyone in one way or another. This dynamic extends to dental care as well: people approach and respond to subsequent encounters with dental professionals based on past experiences, especially if trauma is involved. By adopting a trauma-informed approach, healthcare professionals can cultivate empathy and responsiveness to patients’ needs and enhance their self-efficacy.
Interprofessional Models Of Care: A Strategic Framework For Advancing Integrated Healthcare, Daniel J. Pihlstrom Dds
Interprofessional Models Of Care: A Strategic Framework For Advancing Integrated Healthcare, Daniel J. Pihlstrom Dds
Journal of the American College of Dentists
Interprofessional models of care (IPMC) provide a vital framework for improving the delivery of health services through the alignment of medical and dental protocols, integration of shared health data, and collaborative, team-based care. Drawing on both empirical data and theoretical models, this analysis explores how integrated care can become the norm rather than the exception.
Unifying Health And Oral Health—An Ethical Imperative, Shelia Brear Bds
Unifying Health And Oral Health—An Ethical Imperative, Shelia Brear Bds
Journal of the American College of Dentists
The 2024 Ethics Summit, Breaking Down the Silos, convened by the American College of Dentists, marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing discourse on the ethical responsibilities of oral healthcare professionals. This distinguished gathering of interprofessional experts offered an insightful and urgent exploration into one of healthcare’s most pressing yet underexamined ethical imperatives: the moral obligation to fully integrate oral health into the broader healthcare system. The summit’s focus aligns powerfully with the mission of the American College of Dentists to advance excellence, ethics, professionalism, and leadership in oral healthcare.
Nurture Is Nature: The Molecular Basis Of Caregiver Genotype Effects On Larval Growth And Caste Development In The Clonal Raider Ant, Patrick Konrad Piekarski
Nurture Is Nature: The Molecular Basis Of Caregiver Genotype Effects On Larval Growth And Caste Development In The Clonal Raider Ant, Patrick Konrad Piekarski
Student Theses and Dissertations
The distinction between nature (genetics) and nurture (environment) is blurry, in part because the environment includes the genes of social partners. This is especially evident for parents and their offspring, where genes expressed in one partner profoundly influence the physiology and behavior of the other. Such indirect genetic effects (IGEs) are mediated through social interactions. Although parental care has evolved in many disparate lineages, in most systems it is challenging to delineate the effects of genetics and environment on the phenotypes of caregivers and offspring. This is because most animals with parental care reproduce sexually, meaning each genotype is represented …

Coastal Flooding And Housing Market Liquidity: Policy Implications For Eastern U. S. Communities, Wai Yan Siu, Rex Sitti
Coastal Flooding And Housing Market Liquidity: Policy Implications For Eastern U. S. Communities, Wai Yan Siu, Rex Sitti
ODU Articles
Coastal flooding poses an escalating threat to communities across the U.S East Coast, where rising sea levels and intensifying storms increasingly overwhelm existing infrastructure and natural defenses. These events generate complex economic consequences that extend beyond immediate property damage to affect community stability and long-term development patterns. The real estate industry in particular, faces increasing levels of flood risk. Existing research on climate risk and real estate markets focuses predominantly on price capitalization effects, overlooking the critical dimension of housing market liquidity. This study examines the causal impact of coastal flooding on days-on-market (DOM), a metric of liquidity in the …

Exploring Educator Attitudes And Their Impact On Racial Inequities In School Discipline, Chanel Renee` Rice
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
This dissertation presents a mixed methods research study conducted within the framework of the Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice (ISDiP). The primary objective of this research is to investigate targeted interventions and resources designed to enhance educators' cultural awareness and social-emotional competence. These enhancements aimed to foster identity-affirming learning environments for students of color, serving as a mechanism to address and mitigate racial discipline disparities in educational contexts.
The validation of student identities, alongside the establishment of inclusive learning environments, is paramount for promoting academic success and addressing the distinct needs of students of color. Nonetheless, the enduring presence of …
Exploring Student Engagement In Urban Public High Schools: An Improvement Science Study, Ashley Hunter Freeman
Exploring Student Engagement In Urban Public High Schools: An Improvement Science Study, Ashley Hunter Freeman
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
This Dissertation in Practice began with a simple question about student engagement and ended with a framework for systemic change. Set in Harborview Public High Schools, an urban and historically under-resourced district, the study examined how educators define engagement, the barriers that limit it, and the supports needed to strengthen it. Fragmented initiatives and inconsistent practices have hindered the development of a coherent classroom-anchored engagement strategy. Guided by an Improvement Science framework, this study used a twophase convergent mixed methods design that included questionnaires, focus groups, educator reflections, and classroom observations.
The first phase focused on professional discourse and sharing …

Trust Brokers And Connectors: Cultivation Of Trust And The Trusted Adult In High School, Vae L. Champagne
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
Trusted adult-student connectedness is a key lever for enhancing school safety, preventing violence, and developing a sense of belonging in high schools. However, there are no formal practices, guidelines, or policies in place to cultivate and equip trusted adults for this vital role. Therefore, this Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice (ISDiP) employs an improvement science methodology with a qualitative research design to explore how to foster a school-wide presence of trusted adults and bolster their preparedness. Through focus group interviews, a questionnaire, workshop observations, and design-based activities with youth and educators, cocreated connection tools and strategies were tested using the …
Addressing School Counselor Occupational Stress: An Improvement Science Study In Redefining Roles, Anthony Tumolo
Addressing School Counselor Occupational Stress: An Improvement Science Study In Redefining Roles, Anthony Tumolo
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
This dissertation examines the issue of chronic occupational stress among school counselors in the Farmville School District (FSD), a challenge rooted in outdated systemic practices that have led to role misalignment, work overload, and insufficient administrative understanding. Using an improvement science framework, this qualitative study sought to identify and address the organizational conditions contributing to counselor stress while aligning district practices with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. Through interviews, document reviews, and environmental scans, the study explored how systemic factors and unclear role expectations impact counselors’ ability to provide effective student support. The findings revealed that a …

Limits On Traffic Stops: Saving Lives By Constraining Police Authority, Jeannine Bell, Stephen Rushin
Faculty Publications & Other Works
This Article considers how policymakers can more effectively constrain police authority during traffic stops to reduce racial disparities and prevent unnecessary violence.
We begin by chronicling the power granted to police officers during traffic enforcement and the harms generated by this discretionary power. Under existing criminal procedure, police officers have considerable authority to stop motorists for any technical violation of the traffic code, even if the stated justification is a pretext for investigating an unrelated hunch or suspicion. After stopping a motorist, existing doctrine gives police the ability to question them, search their vehicles under numerous circumstances, arrest drivers for …
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Arab Refugees: Access To Public Housing And Integration In Dallas County, Texas., Salam Lattouf
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Arab Refugees: Access To Public Housing And Integration In Dallas County, Texas., Salam Lattouf
Planning Dissertations - Archive
Past research in the Global North has overlooked the housing issues faced by low-income refugees while primarily examining disadvantaged communities and people of color, such as low-income African American and Hispanic populations. Refugees coming to the United States face compound challenges and barriers in securing adequate housing, besides contending with other social and economic difficulties such as language barriers and lack of knowledge in the housing market, which expose them to exploitation and eventually impact their access to opportunities such as employment. Although the literature on housing accessibility for refugees is scarce in the United States, we argue that the …

Promesas Incumplidas: The Reconfiguration Of Gendered Expectations And Relationships During The Bracero Program (1942-1964), Adriana Justo Ortiz
Undergraduate Research Awards
The Bracero Program led to the breakdown of domestic roles, disruptions of female and Braceros’ partnerships with women, and the creation of new friendships among the male Braceros themselves. After the Braceros left for their work contracts in the United States, Mexican women took on additional responsibilities that were customarily done by their husband. In contrast, the Braceros had to undertake domestic chores in their temporary labor camps that their wives would have generally done in Mexico. Because Anglo- American employers and entrepreneurs, specifically those from Tulare, California, as demonstrated by the work of historian Ana Elizabeth Rosas, had certain …
