An Integrated Approach To Patient Safety In The Medical Device Industry: A Quality Improvement Project, Kaylee Boisvert Jan 2025

An Integrated Approach To Patient Safety In The Medical Device Industry: A Quality Improvement Project, Kaylee Boisvert

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: The currently established product surveillance process at Boston Scientific is a reactive one which presents compliance risks, patient safety risks, and quality risks. Evolution to a proactive process is necessary to protect public health, allow for commercialization of devices that have a robust safety, reliability, and efficacy profile, and to identify and react to risk before or at the early stages of a problem.

Methods: A pre-implementation survey of baseline opinions associated with decision-making, efficiency, effectivity, and safety of the current product surveillance system was performed. A baseline time study was performed associated with the process, which was separated …

A Study In The Student Experience Of Care – What It Looks, Sounds, And Feels Like For Students In A Rural Public High School, Steven Mark Chamberlin Jan 2025

A Study In The Student Experience Of Care – What It Looks, Sounds, And Feels Like For Students In A Rural Public High School, Steven Mark Chamberlin

Doctoral Dissertations

Students' voices are essential to understanding their perceptions, experiences, and viewson care. Many schools prioritize standardized test outcomes over individual care for each child, which leads to disengagement and a lack of agency. Students who feel cared for tend to achieve greater success in school.

This question guided the inquiry: How do students perceive, experience, and understandcare in their secondary school in New Hampshire? Twelve individual interviews were conducted with students who had varying degrees of academic success and special education identification.

The findings led to the development of a preliminary model of care that establishesschool culture as the foundation …

The Impacts Of Social Media On Teacher Environment Perceptions, Victoria Puglia Jan 2025

The Impacts Of Social Media On Teacher Environment Perceptions, Victoria Puglia

Doctoral Dissertations

Social media significantly influences teachers’ perceptions of their professional environment, shaping job satisfaction, respect, autonomy, and professional support. This dissertation, split into three articles, investigates how exposure to positive, negative, or mixed social media posts impact these perceptions, addressing concerns surrounding teacher well-being and attrition in K-12 education. The study began with a literature review in Article 1 to establish a theoretical framework, followed by a series of validation steps to refine a survey instrument aligned with teaching perception constructs in Article 2. The final survey was administered to 406 K-12 teachers across the United States in Article 3, using …

The Untitled Othello Project: Theoretical Implications Of Untitling, Emily Bryan Jan 2025

The Untitled Othello Project: Theoretical Implications Of Untitling, Emily Bryan

English Faculty Publications

This essay analyzes The Untitled Othello Project (UOP) created by Keith Hamilton Cobb. Originating out of conversations around his play American Moor and coinciding with George Floyd’s murder and the period of racial unrest and reflection in the United States, UOP is a transformative approach to Shakespeare studies around issues of pedagogy and performance. Rooted in Cobb’s frustration with systemic racism and exclusion in the capitalist American theater as depicted in American Moor, UOP applies a method called “untitling”, a collaborative and reflective process of dismantling and reimagining Shakespeare’s Othello beyond its origins. This essay examines UOP’s interdisciplinary methods. As …

The Wild Dark Or, La Oscuridad Salvaje: Illuminating Identity Through Failure, Worley B. Gierhart

Undergraduate Theses

This thesis, "The Wild Dark or, La oscuridad salvaje: Illuminating Identity Through Failure," explores how the narrative power of darkness can serve as a catalyst for profound self-discovery, particularly in the aftermath of significant failure. Drawing upon literary analysis and the author's personal experience of shifting academic paths, the study examines how confronting metaphorical darkness allows for a critical rebuilding of identity and self-concept. The play referenced in the title, "The Wild Dark or, La oscuridad salvaje," serves as a central point of analysis, investigating the interplay of theme, setting, and scenario in depicting this transformative process. By engaging with …

Adapting A Mobile Health Intervention To Improve Prep Adherence Among Young Black Msm In Fulton County, Georgia, Kassidy Maust Jan 2025

Adapting A Mobile Health Intervention To Improve Prep Adherence Among Young Black Msm In Fulton County, Georgia, Kassidy Maust

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) in the southern United States, particularly in Fulton County, Georgia, face disproportionately high rates of HIV and unique structural barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and adherence. Sustained adherence among YBMSM remains low due to intersecting structural, social, and behavioral barriers. To address these disparities, this paper presents an adapted implementation of the evidence-based M-Cubed (Mobile Messaging for Men) mHealth intervention. Prior studies of M-Cubed and similar mHealth interventions have shown promising outcomes in increasing PrEP adherence among Black MSM populations. The adapted intervention integrates culturally tailored messaging specific to behaviors …

Restoring Rattlesnake Creek: Using Citizen Science To Assess The Ecological And Morphological Impacts Of Dam Removal In Western Montana, Bethany Blakey

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

As dam removals increase in frequency across the U.S., most research has focused on the impact of larger dam removals, despite the removal of small dams being much more common. Given the hundreds of small dams in Montana, this research uses citizen science data collected over eight years spanning before and after a 2020 small dam removal in Rattlesnake Creek, Montana, to investigate impact on stream ecology and morphology. We analyzed pebble count grain size distributions and aquatic macroinvertebrate biotic indices from 2017 to 2024 to assess changes in sediment transport and macroinvertebrate population as well as evaluate the efficacy …

Expanding Education Skills: Case Study And Content Creation For Theatre Educators At Um, Ren E. Shepherd Jan 2025

Expanding Education Skills: Case Study And Content Creation For Theatre Educators At Um, Ren E. Shepherd

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

A love of theatre does not spring into the hearts of people from thin air. It is not something given by the universe, but something cultivated through years of going to performances, researching late at night, and the guidance of theatre educators. Despite the influence of Theatre Educators, they are largely overlooked when considering theatre professionals and their training. This lack of oversight is a nation-wide issue, but by focusing on just the University of Montana, there is a chance for greater understanding and change at a local community level. By employing academic research, surveys of UM faculty and students, …

Neutrosophic Twofold Superhyperalgebra And Anti Superhyperalgebra, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic Sets are conceptual frameworks designed to address uncertainty. A Neutrosophic TwoFold Algebra is a hybrid algebraic structure defined over a neutrosophic set, combining classical algebraic operations with neutrosophic components. Concepts such as Hyperalgebra and Superhyperalgebra extend classical Algebra using Power Sets and 𝑛-th powersets. Additionally, structures such as NeutroAlgebra and AntiAlgebra have been defined in recent y ears. This paper explores several related concepts, including TwoFold SuperhyperAlgebra and Anti SuperhyperAlgebra.

The 'Realness' Key To Compelled Passcode Production, Gabriel Pell Jan 2025

The 'Realness' Key To Compelled Passcode Production, Gabriel Pell

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

This Article explains how the Foregone Conclusion exception to the Fifth Amendment’s privilege against self-incrimination applies to compelled passcode production. The Supreme Court fashioned the Foregone Conclusion exception in connection with the compelled production of documentary evidence. It facilitates government access to real evidence despite the implicit factual communications inherent in a target’s act of producing it (i.e., that the real evidence exists, is accessible, and is what the state demanded). Engaging with the ‘real evidence’ limitation for compelled acts of production, the Article shows that focusing on unlocked devices and/or stored passcodes as the real evidence to be produced …

Police Misconduct: Combatting The Complicity Crisis, Eric Arnold Jan 2025

Police Misconduct: Combatting The Complicity Crisis, Eric Arnold

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

This Comment explores the current state of police reform in the city of Chicago, with a special focus on the various oversight agencies currently in force. Chicago has a long history of police misconduct, and the city has tried to make changes over the years to restore the community’s trust in policing. The police reform movement became especially prevalent in recent years following the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald by a Chicago Police Officer in 2014. This Comment will show why the current mechanisms in place are insufficient to bring the needed change to the Chicago Police Department, and that …

Yet Another Elected Power: A Case For Randomly Selected Forepersons, Cj Miller Jan 2025

Yet Another Elected Power: A Case For Randomly Selected Forepersons, Cj Miller

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Most United States courts require the jury to elect their own foreperson, a role that has amplified influence on the jury’s verdict. In practice, the election process is done quickly and without discussion. As a result, the foreperson is demographically biased toward older men of high socioeconomic status. This paper uses psychological literature to argue that the current selection system produces suboptimal forepersons. Instead, it proposes a system of random selection, including an opt-out procedure for those who do not feel capable of holding the position.

Sentencing Insurrection, Kevin Lapp Jan 2025

Sentencing Insurrection, Kevin Lapp

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

On January 6, 2021, an estimated two thousand people broke police lines and breached the U.S. Capitol building in an effort to prevent the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. Over one thousand people have been charged with various crimes for their actions that day, from misdemeanor trespassing charges to felony assault with a weapon and seditious conspiracy. Relying on publicly available sources, this Article presents results from an analysis of the first 514 people to have been sentenced in federal court for crimes committed on January 6. The result is a snapshot of the insurrectionists, the charges they …

The Unknowns Of The Knowledge Requirement: Revisiting The Deliberate Indifference Standard In Prisoner Healthcare, Malina J. Simard-Halm Jan 2025

The Unknowns Of The Knowledge Requirement: Revisiting The Deliberate Indifference Standard In Prisoner Healthcare, Malina J. Simard-Halm

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

In the 1976 decision Estelle v. Gamble, the Supreme Court held that “deliberate indifference” to significant health needs of prisoners violated the Eighth Amendment. The standard’s knowledge requirement, however, ensured that prisoners were not guaranteed healthcare under the constitutional standard; rather, the constitutionality of healthcare in prisons would be tethered to the mental state of prison officials. This Article seeks to demonstrate that correctional standards of healthcare occupy an incoherent space in constitutional law. By analyzing the legal standard and the application of the knowledge requirement, this Article exposes the theoretical inconsistency and inadequacy of the deliberate indifference standard—and …

Proof Beyond A Reasonable Doubt Doesn't Exist: Except As An Emergent Property Of A Complex Adaptive System, Ronald J. Allen, Nicolas Elliott-Smith Jan 2025

Proof Beyond A Reasonable Doubt Doesn't Exist: Except As An Emergent Property Of A Complex Adaptive System, Ronald J. Allen, Nicolas Elliott-Smith

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

The pursuit of knowledge is undergoing a transformation. Scientists and scholars are rejecting standard reductionist efforts, popularly captured by “the scientific method” and embracing the framework of complexity theory and complex adaptive systems. That framework is invaluable to understand both the law of evidence and the nature of Anglo-American legal systems. It also has significant implications for the ongoing debate over the concept of law. This Article demonstrates how “proof beyond a reasonable doubt” (BARD) does not exist in any knowable form, except as an emergent property of a complex adaptive system—the criminal process. First, what constitutes BARD will vary …

Probation Without A Home: How Probation Maintains Barriers To Successful Completion While Homeless, Olivia K. Babin Jan 2025

Probation Without A Home: How Probation Maintains Barriers To Successful Completion While Homeless, Olivia K. Babin

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson, national attention is being brought to discussions about the criminalization of homelessness and the experiences of homeless people in the criminal legal system. Community supervision (probation and parole) is an oft-forgotten portion of the criminal justice system, despite there being nearly triple the number of people on parole or probation than the number of people incarcerated in the United States. Probation specifically is seen as an alternative to incarceration. Some view it as a more humane punishment than incarceration; others believe probation is far too lenient and sentenced too often. …

A Commitment To Health For All: Reimagining Representation And Participation In The Who Beyond State-Centrism, Yen-Wen Liao Jan 2025

A Commitment To Health For All: Reimagining Representation And Participation In The Who Beyond State-Centrism, Yen-Wen Liao

Public Health Theses

Despite its stated commitment to “health for all,” the World Health Organization (WHO) has long been subject to the influence of Member State politics. Specifically, the Organization’s state-based membership model and governance structure have continuously enabled powerful Member States to advance their political interests, leading to the exclusion and marginalization of populations based on the recognition or political status of their representatives. One such example is Taiwan, which has been repeatedly denied membership in the Organization despite the functional independence of its public health authority, leaving over 23 million people neglected amid two major health crises. These forms of exclusion …

The Ai Act Manipulation Gap, Claire Boine Jan 2025

The Ai Act Manipulation Gap, Claire Boine

Emory International Law Review

The European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) represents a significant step in regulating AI technologies, but this paper argues that its provisions on manipulation are critically under-inclusive. Through a comprehensive analysis of AI-enabled manipulation and the current EU legal framework, this paper offers an account of how the AI Act’s narrow focus on subliminal techniques and purposeful manipulation fails to address the full spectrum of AI-driven manipulative practices.

The paper develops its argument in four parts. First, it provides an overview of AI-enabled manipulation, highlighting its unique characteristics and the structural changes it introduces to democratic processes. Second, it …

Islamic Finance, Commercial Law, And Economic Justice: Apocalyptic Challenges To The Global Order, Ali Rod Khadem Jan 2025

Islamic Finance, Commercial Law, And Economic Justice: Apocalyptic Challenges To The Global Order, Ali Rod Khadem

Emory International Law Review

This Article engages with the heated debates about the Islamic finance industry, which range from praise as an ethical model of ESG principles to sharp criticism as a vehicle for financing terrorism. Offering a novel lens, this Article examines several case studies of Islamic thinkers and movements that have disrupted global politics, exploring how they deploy apocalyptic ideology to promote vastly different visions of future economic orders. Some of these case studies reinterpret key concepts from Islamic commercial law—like unjust enrichment, limited liability partnerships, insurance, almsgiving, and inheritance—while others call for a return to abandoned practices, such as slavery, discriminatory …

Accommodating Disabilities During Arrests: Toward A Model Law To Improve Police Response To Mental Health Crisis, Michael Harel Jan 2025

Accommodating Disabilities During Arrests: Toward A Model Law To Improve Police Response To Mental Health Crisis, Michael Harel

Emory International Law Review

Policing people with mental illness (PWMI) presents a persistent global challenge. Although PWMI do not have a greater propensity for violence, they are disproportionately killed during police encounters. Using Australia as a case study, this Comment argues that use-of-force laws are inadequate in these situations because they defer excessively to officer discretion—failing to account for how officers often escalate encounters with PWMI by neglecting appropriate crisis-response tactics or by misperceiving PWMI behavior as violent, even when that behavior reflects mental health symptoms rather than actual threats. Current legal standards often excuse such perceptions, but properly trained officers should be expected …

Health Measures And Willingness To Pay For Internet Services, Maysam Rabbani, Cari A. Bogulski, Corey J. Hayes

Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Introduction: With the rapid adoption of telehealth services, health measures are increasingly tied to internet access. However, there is limited literature on how internet connectivity correlates to health measures and health care utilization. We examined the links between willingness to pay (WTP) for internet services and health measures, namely, health insurance type, general health, physical health, mental health, health literacy, and cost/transportation barriers to health care access. Methods: We designed a custom survey and collected 5, 200 responses in four U.S. states. We implemented a stratified conjoint analysis to estimate the WTP for internet speed and quality and its connections …
