Increasing Cervical Cancer Screening At An Underserved Clinic, Aseiya Begum
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Cervical cancer remains a preventable disease when detected early through routine screenings, yet national screening rates continue to fall short, particularly among underserved populations. Increasing engagement in preventive care is critical to reducing morbidity and mortality.
Local Problem: At the project site, cervical cancer screening rates were below national benchmarks at only 58%, with many eligible patients overdue for screening.
Methods: A quality improvement project was used to identify eligible patients through chart reviews. Screening completion rates were monitored before and after implementation to assess impact.
Interventions: The project implemented targeted outreach strategies, including personalized MyChart electronic messages and …

A Quality Improvement Project On Risk Stratification And Screening For Sleep Apnea In Cardiology Outpatient Setting, Ma Vanessa S. Mabazza
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most prevalent sleep disorder and is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), but remains widely underdiagnosed due to inconsistent and non-standardized screening practices in outpatient settings.
Local Problem: Patients with CVD were reported to be diagnosed with OSA following sleep studies at an outpatient cardiology clinic. The need for a consistent, evidence-based approach to risk-stratification and screening was recognized.
Aim: The aim of this project was to increase the OSA risk stratification rate among new adult cardiology patients from 53% to at least 85% over a 16-week implementation period by incorporating the …
Unlocking Organizational Potential For Gis Collaboration In Higher Education, Charidy Paige
Unlocking Organizational Potential For Gis Collaboration In Higher Education, Charidy Paige
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Hardware, performance, and complex interface issues are just a few barriers that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) instructors must overcome when collaborative efforts extend beyond their classrooms. As GIS technologies evolve, instructors must adapt quickly to new tools and methods to maintain effective collaboration and ensure students achieve positive learning outcomes. Successful cooperation between departments, institutions, and other organizations requires preparation and sustainability throughout the semester to foster meaningful partnerships and support institutional goals. This dissertation applies the Resource Dependency Theory (RDT) to identify and define the challenges faced by GIS instructors, examining how they navigate these barriers by leveraging internal …

Race Talks, Illinois Math And Science Academy
Race Talks
Race Talks Series Overview
Origins & Goal: Launched in the second semester of FY 23–24 in response to student protests, the Race Talks series aimed to bring together students, staff, and faculty to discuss racial bias at IMSA and develop concrete tools for addressing it. Facilitated by Marcus Sibley—a nationally recognized speaker, activist, and spoken-word artist—the initial two-part series drew over 35 attendees per session (students, peers, and staff), with overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Expanded Series & Participation: Building on this success, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, invited Marcus Sibley back for a four-part series tailored to deepen the …
More Bookman Than Bookerite: William Stanley Braithwaite And Poetic Stereotypes, Susanna Ashton
More Bookman Than Bookerite: William Stanley Braithwaite And Poetic Stereotypes, Susanna Ashton
Publications
William Stanley Braithwaite (1878–1962) began his life with printed words as a printer’s apprentice with Ginn and Company in Massachusetts. Unlike Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, William Dean Howells, and Mark Twain, all of whom began their meteoric literary careers by typesetting, Braithwaite’s rise was thwarted by the cultural stereotyping around race. It isn’t surprising, therefore, that throughout his career as anthologizer, publisher, poet, critic, and Boston Evening Transcript columnist, William Stanley Braithwaite used his facility with type to inform valuations of narrative and language with an eye not to race-blind aspects of literature, but to ways race might be recognized …

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier
Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier
Sociology: Faculty Books
This innovative Handbook examines how gender shapes social activism and is shaped by activism. With a unique interdisciplinary focus, it explores the effects of the gender binary on experiences of activism, considering how different movements negotiate and, at times, challenge these traditional conceptions. It then moves beyond the binary to explore how gender is challenged by contemporary movements.
Expert authors discuss the impact and limitations of the gender binary, using examples such as the MeToo movement to demonstrate how viewing men and women as separate, monolithic categories results in countless differences being overlooked. Chapters present a range of global and …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this research is to examine the impact that youth leadership programs have on WV youth resilience skills, as measured by the Wagnild Resilience Scale (RS). This research adds to the current body of knowledge by focusing on a specific set of resilience skills as measured by The Resilience Scale (RS): purpose, perseverance, equanimity, self-reliance, and existential aloneness. To determine the impact of youth leadership programs and/or organizations on resilience skills, WV youth ages 13-18 were given the Resilience Scale Assessment. This research is a non-experimental, comparative study looking at the differences in Resilience Scale scores between WV …

Faculty Accountability In Higher Education: Navigating Complexity And Equity, Mary Margaret Cunningham
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
This chapter examines the complex landscape of faculty accountability in modern higher education institutions. It analyzes the traditional supervisory structures and evaluation systems while highlighting emerging challenges and tensions in faculty assessment. Additionally, it explores the multiple dimensions of faculty accountability, including the tenure and promotion process, the role of student evaluations, and peer review systems. Particular attention is given to how these systems impact faculty of underrepresented identities and the increasing prevalence of non- tenure track positions. This chapter also explores how mission creep and shifting facultystudent dynamics affect accountability standards. Through an analysis of current practices and limitations, …
Reimagining Compliance: Explainable Ai Models For Financial Regulatory Audits, Hrishikesh Desai
Reimagining Compliance: Explainable Ai Models For Financial Regulatory Audits, Hrishikesh Desai
Faculty Publications
This chapter develops an analytical model for Explainable AI (XAI) designed to support major types of banking regulatory compliance audits. Financial institutions increasingly rely on AI for efficiency in compliance tasks, but the opacity of complex models creates challenges in meeting regulatory transparency requirements. The proposed mathematical framework incorporates explainability as a quantifiable constraint in the optimization of AI models across five critical audit categories: CAMELS examinations, BSA/AML compliance, Consumer Compliance, IT Audits, and Internal Audits. By quantifying explainability through information- theoretic measures and Shapley values, the model balances predictive performance with regulatory requirements. The methodology is validated through a …

Research Institute for Social Equity
As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies expand rapidly, public debate has focused on their societal impacts and the need for regulatory oversight. This report offers the first overview of the “what, where, and when” of AI-related legislation introduced in U.S. state legislatures between 2019 and 2024, analyzing key policy trends, priorities, and equity considerations. Although relatively few bills have been enacted, legislative activity has accelerated, reflecting growing political attention to the promises and risks of AI. Most approved bills focus on regulating public or private sector uses of AI, establishing commissions or study groups, and updating education and workforce development programs. …
George William Castone: An Integrated Baseball Life At The Close Of The Nineteenth Century, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
George William Castone: An Integrated Baseball Life At The Close Of The Nineteenth Century, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Monographs
George William Castone was a Black baseball player during the 1880s and 1890s. He pitched for integrated town teams and minor league teams, as well as Black clubs, such as the Lincoln Giants in Nebraska and the Cuban Giants in the northeastern United States. Most of his time on the diamond was spent in Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska, but Castone also played on an otherwise white barnstorming team organized in Salt Lake City that traveled through Montana, Oregon, and California. He was among the few Black players on minor league teams in the Colorado State League in 1889 and the …
I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young
I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young
MESM Major Papers
Though a majority of Americans accept climate change as a reality, most people are hesitant to discuss the issue. And the implications of climate silence have far-reaching effects, including less action on climate change. This project synthesizes recent research on climate change, climate silence, and climate action to create a workbook-style zine. This tool is meant to help people who are concerned about the changing climate have generative, deep conversations about this crisis. Through a literature review, a first-person interview, and centering inclusive science communication principles, I created I can see a future: Creative ways to talk about climate change. …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca
Library Publications
Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.
Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

Disseminating Evidence-Based Assessments To Educators In South Africa And Vietnam Through Behavioural Skills Training, Andresa A. De Souza, Dani M. Pizzella, Cong Van Tran, Nicolette V. Roman
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
Students’ interfering behaviour is a common concern among educators working in special and general education classrooms. Interfering behaviour can significantly compromise students’ educational experiences and educators’ ability to create a conducive learning environment. Evidence-based assessments and interventions for interfering behaviour in the classroom involve identifying the variables in the student’s immediate environment influencing these behaviours. There has been little to no dissemination of evidence-based assessments for classroom management in developing nations such as South Africa and Vietnam. In the current study, we used a single-case design to assess the effectiveness and acceptability of behavioural skills training (BST) in teaching educators …
Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust
Playing Empathy: The Impacts Of Theatre On Empathy, Isabelle J. Daoust
Honors Program Theses
The purpose of this study is to address a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between theatre and empathy; specifically, investigating how varying levels of participation in theatre may influence cognitive and affective empathy. This study examines whether empathy can be fostered through mere observation of theatre or whether active participation yields greater effects. Twenty-eight undergraduate participants, all of whom attend a small liberal arts college in the United States, either participated in three theatre games or observed their fellow participants playing them. The results did not support the primary hypotheses, as most empathy-related measures showed no statistically significant …

Exploring The Nexus Of Climate Change, Energy Poverty, And Resilience Through Social Enterprises, Bupe Kunda
Honors Program Theses
This thesis examines how social enterprises address the nexus of climate change, energy poverty, and resilience in Zambia. Despite abundant renewable resources, only 34% of Zambians have electricity access, with stark urban-rural disparities (67% vs 14.5%). Using a qualitative multiple case study approach, this research analyzes ZESCO Limited, Muhanya Solar Limited, and Nyimba Energy Service Company (NESCO) through an integrated theoretical framework combining Social-Ecological-Technical Systems (SETS), energy justice, and social entrepreneurship theories. The study reveals that social enterprises demonstrate innovative approaches including NESCO's energy service company model and Muhanya's prepaid metering system, yet face significant challenges achieving financial sustainability and …
