What Would You Have Done? Learning From Others' Aviation Safety Events, Jolene Feldman, Sepehr Bastami, Jon Holbrook

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

The capacity to learn from both expected and unexpected events has beenidentified as a critical component of resilient performance. One’s ownexperiences, however, are not the only opportunities to learn from these types ofevents. In the aviation domain, operator-submitted safety event reports can alsoprovide a rich source of opportunity for learning from what others haveexperienced. In addition to maintaining the world’s largest collection ofvoluntarily submitted aviation safety incident reports, NASA’s Aviation SafetyReporting System (ASRS) also publishes a monthly online safety newsletter,CALLBACK, which periodically features a segment called “What Would YouHave Done?” These segments offer readers a chance to “interact” withinformation from …

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

In the flight training environment, Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) experienceinconsistent schedules, long hours at the airport, and limited organizationalsupport in their roles. These factors can contribute to fatigue and burnout whichcan also impact Flight Students. This study explores such experiences of CFIs andflight students through semi structured focus groups across three collegiate flightschools. Analysis of these focus group transcripts revealed five themes:organizational issues, financial pressures, fatigue, burnout, and trainingeffectiveness. Our findings identified how systemic stressors, like rigidscheduling, financial stress, and lack of career infrastructure, degrade the CFIs’wellbeing which leads to compromised training quality and flight safety. Flightstudents also observed signs …

Small Changes, Big Returns: Decision-Making And Progress Towards Equitable Service Delivery, Kourtney Blackburn, Christina Hillman

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Lavery Library is the sole library for St. John Fisher University and its five schools. The university is located in a small suburb in western New York State. Over the past decade we experienced many transformational changes. Some of these changes include our parent institution’s designation moving from college to university and the expansion of hybrid and online programs. The program expansions, combined with exploring textbook borrowing and changes to library services post-Covid, propelled the library staff to reimagine Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services for distance patrons. From our first online program policies in 2012 to the present day, this chapter …

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Violence Prevention Programs In Central Asia And The U.S. Education Systems, Nilufar Bobjonova

Graduate Research Papers

The rise of youth violence and aggressive behavior has become a significant public health concern, affecting individuals on multiple levels, including physical, economic, social, and psychological well-being. Given the national attention this issue has received in the United States, various prevention programs have been designed to equip children with essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to minimize their involvement in violent activities (Higgerson et al., 2008). Preventing violence through structured programs is essential for creating safe and supportive educational environments. Schools serve as an ideal platform for implementing these initiatives, as they provide a consistent setting for teaching young individuals critical …

Taking It To The Limit: Curricular Responses To Credit Hour Caps In Music Teacher Education Programs, Phillip D. Payne, Edward C. Hoffman Iii, Aaron T. Wacker, Ashley D. Allen

Research & Issues in Music Education

As tuition rates continue to rise, credit hours required for degree completion emerges as a primary topic of concern. Undergraduate music education programs (or degrees) typically require a high number of credit hours which may also necessitate student class overloads, summer coursework, and/or program completion that could exceed the expected term of four years. To better understand the extent of current degree requirements and offerings, we examined credit allocation practices at 100 randomly selected NASM institutions. Specifically, we focused on emerging trends, commonalities, and potential insights to better guide policymakers when addressing legislative mandates focused on credit hour caps. Findings …

Let The Light Shine: Reclaiming Public Space Through Digital Projection, Katherine D. Lind Jan 2025

Let The Light Shine: Reclaiming Public Space Through Digital Projection, Katherine D. Lind

Communication Studies Faculty Works

Amid the racial uprisings of 2017 and 2020, digital projections emerged as a mode of protest contributing to the calls for removal of Confederate monuments. These digital projections, I argue, created a dialogue between the contested Confederate monuments (the past) and their contemporary surroundings (the present). By examining the digital projections that were cast upon the Albert Pike Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Robert E. Lee Monument in Richmond, Virginia, I demonstrate how they employed a palimpsest to facilitate discourse concerning public memorialization practices and to re-contextualize and reclaim contested sites into spaces for community engagement.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects more than two million people worldwide. Providing care for MS patients differs from providing care for other illnesses due to the early onset of the disease, a varying illness progression, and because MS patients are predominantly female. This qualitative research study applied Pearlin’s Stress Process Model (SPM) to explore MS caregiving in a homogeneous group of caregiver/patient dyads. Qualitative interviews were conducted with both MS patients and their caregivers utilizing grounded theory to explore the MS caregiving phenomenon. Pearlin’s SPM was used to evaluate the qualitative data, which provided insight into the gendered nature of the …

Collecting Financial Data From Online Sources: Enhancing Large Language Models With Real-Time Search, Yang Li

Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Timely and accurate access to financial data is crucial for empirical research in accounting and finance. However, current data collection processes are often manual, inconsistent, and difficult to scale. This study asks: How can large language models (LLMs) be effectively used to automate financial data collection? Using design science research methodology (DSRM), the author develops a modular architecture that integrates a real-time search API and auxiliary information processing into LLM workflows. The study applies the model to two tasks: extracting ESG report release dates and identifying customer firm tickers from COMPUSTAT. The system achieves 96% and 95% accuracy, respectively, comparable …

Intertwining Wisdom: The Fusion Of Indigenous Knowledge And Liberal Arts And Sciences Education Discourses At The Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University In The Colombian Cauca, Paula Milena Suárez Sandoval

GHEA21 Publications

This research shows how the Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University (UAIIN), the most important community-based indigenous higher education institution in Colombia, has developed an educational model that harmonizes indigenous traditional knowledge with contemporary Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) discourses of higher education. Through qualitative analysis, the study compares how these two approaches are reflected in discourses around the purpose of education, pedagogical methods, and the university’s curriculum. The findings highlight an educational model that reconciles the inclusion of indigenous epistemologies with the contemporary dynamics of higher education.

Gleeson Library Ai Taskforce Final Report, Anders Lyon, Amanda Raver, Kristie Barlas, Shawn P. Calhoun, Annie Pho, Brian Schumacher, Claire Sharifi, Gina Solares

Gleeson Library Initiatives

During the Fall 2025 semester, the Gleeson Library AI Taskforce examined how artificial intelligence is influencing higher education and what those changes mean for library work at USF. By reviewing AI activity across campus, surveying library staff, and analyzing how Jesuit institutions are responding to AI, the Taskforce found a landscape that is evolving quickly but thoughtfully. Across these contexts, interest in AI literacy is growing, experimentation with new tools is expanding, and there is a clear need for library-specific guidance, particularly given that no Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) libraries have published AI policies or frameworks of …

Using Blockchain, Non-Fungible Tokens, And Smart Contracts To Track And Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions, J Gregory Jenkins, Eric N. Negangard, Mark D. Sheldon Jan 2025

Using Blockchain, Non-Fungible Tokens, And Smart Contracts To Track And Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions, J Gregory Jenkins, Eric N. Negangard, Mark D. Sheldon

2025 Faculty Bibliography

Global markets are moving toward requiring firms to track and report greenhouse gas emissions across their value chain. This includes self-generated emissions (i.e., Scope 1), emissions from power providers (i.e., Scope 2), and emissions from upstream suppliers and downstream parties (i.e., Scope 3). Yet, obtaining reliable emissions data is a complex task that often relies on cumbersome legacy processes and becomes especially challenging with upstream and downstream emissions. Using the Design Science Research Methodology, we propose and prototype (early-stage) a technological solution that uses blockchain, non-fungible tokens, and smart contracts to track and report greenhouse gas emissions across a firm’s …

Optimizing Advance Care Planning: Leveraging An Electronic Medical Record Prompt To Impact Advance Directive Documentation, Annette L. Meares

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Abstract

Background: Advance Directives (ADs) support patient-centered care by documenting preferences for future medical treatment. While the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) incentivizes AD documentation through billing codes, national adoption remains low.

Local Problem: A rural Northern Illinois primary care practice had electronic referral capabilities for ACP; however, referrals remained low and inconsistent during Medicare Annual Wellness Visits (AWVs), limiting opportunities for AD completion.

Methods: This quality improvement project targeted Medicare AWV patients without ADs documented in the electronic medical record (EMR). During a 10-week pre-intervention period, baseline data were collected. In the subsequent 10-week intervention phase, an …

Transformative Storytelling: Informing Our Practice By Exploring Ourselves, Heather Sellier Holman

Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) Dissertations

This dissertation explores the need for and potential benefits of utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy and a culturally relevant curriculum in a homogenous – predominantly White – classroom environment. It further addresses how teachers might utilize a critical framework to interrogate and inform instructional practices. The study employs Apple’s Nine Tasks for the Critical Scholar (2012) as a critical lens for education practices and policies and the Transformative Autoethnography Model (2022) as a tool for both data collection and analysis. Autoethnography is used as the reporting vehicle with storytelling serving to illustrate how teacher experiences and beliefs impact instruction. The study …
