Using Mobile Computing And Information Technology In Civil Engineering Construction Projects, M.N. Jadid, M.M. Idress

The Journal of Engineering Research

Mobile computing technology has an enormous potential in civil engineering, mainly in the field of construction management. This paper presents an approach by using mobile computing in a civil engineering construction project, exploring how information can be exchanged at a construction site, and how billing of quantities (BOQ), drawings and specifications are shared for the benefit of the project. One of the major obstacles in using information technology (IT) when applied to civil engineering is due to the dynamic changes in the construction activities and the diversity of construction methods as compared to other industries. This has proved to be …

A Multi-Step Approach For Scheduling Tasks With Synchronization On Clusters Of Computers, B.R. Arafeh Apr 2025

A Multi-Step Approach For Scheduling Tasks With Synchronization On Clusters Of Computers, B.R. Arafeh

The Journal of Engineering Research

In this work, a two-step approach is adopted for scheduling tasks with synchronous inter-task communication. To that end, an efficient algorithm, called GLB-Synch, is introduced for mapping clusters and ordering tasks on processors. The algorithm used the information obtained during the clustering step for selecting a cluster to be mapped on the least loaded processor. A performance study has been conducted on the GLB-Synch algorithm by simulation. A multi-step scheduling setup has been performed based on a previously developed algorithm for clustering DAGs with synchronous communication, called NLC-SynchCom, and using synthesized DAGs. We have shown by analysis and experimentation that …

Thomas Pereira’S 'Lülü Zuanyao' 律呂纂要 (Ca. 1685): A Jesuit Music Theory Textbook For The Chinese Emperor, Qingfan Jiang

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Thomas Pereira (1646–1708), a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, arrived in Beijing in 1672 and was appointed by the Kangxi Emperor (1654–1722) as his music tutor. For the emperor's music lessons, Pereira authored Lülü Zuanyao 律呂纂要 [Elements of Music] (ca. 1685), the first known Western music theory treatise written in Chinese. My translation includes the first half of Zuanyao that focuses on Western music notation, solmization, and the hexachordal system. As a product of the global circulation of musical knowledge in the early modern period, Zuanyao is significant in three ways. First, it illustrates the direct influence of the music education Pereira …

Commemorating August Thirteenth: Music And Theology In Eighteenth-Century Moravian Communities, Ryan M. Malone Apr 2025

Commemorating August Thirteenth: Music And Theology In Eighteenth-Century Moravian Communities, Ryan M. Malone

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

One of the most important memorial days in the Moravian liturgical calendar is August Thirteenth, a commemoration of the communal spiritual awakening that eighteenth-century Moravians experienced on the Saxon estate of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700–1760). While the Moravian church has celebrated this storied event for centuries, complete with music-rich religious services, only a few original compositions were crafted specifically for these services. In light of the importance of August Thirteenth, and given of the abundance of musical works that eighteenth-century Moravian composers wrote for other memorial days and religious holidays, this article employs musicological and theological perspectives to …

The Correlation Between Fashion, Music & Design, Mary Marcusen Apr 2025

The Correlation Between Fashion, Music & Design, Mary Marcusen

Student Research Symposium

Fashion, music and design often feel the same because they are deeply intertwined in their responses to the cultural, social, and economic conditions of their time. These creative fields share common influences, whether it's an economic boom, a political movement, a technological shift, or a specific artistic trend. As they reflect the emotions, ideas, and experiences of a given decade, they create an aesthetic unity that makes them feel cohesive. The key to this phenomenon lies in the way these fashion, music, and design communicate the collective mood of the era, which gradually creates a sense of cultural coherence across …

Comparing Ai And Human Self-Assessments In Memorization Performance*, Meg Ermer, Abishur Moses-Pakkianathan

Campus Research Month

Many students in higher education use flashcard applications for learning large amounts of information in limited amounts of time. Many of these applications rely on spaced-repetition algorithms for memorization, which are proven to be more efficient than traditional study methods. We compared the effects of studying with a spaced-repetition application that utilizes a NLU model to calculate a user's understanding of material against the effects of studying with a spaced-repetition model that did not use NLU. We used our results to determine if replacing the self-assessment component of flashcard studying applications with a NLU model led to better memorization and …

Can Genai Evaluate Social Themes In Global Cinema? An Introductory Exploration Using French Ivory Coast Film To Evaluate Religious And Familial Social Themes, Andrew Hyde

Student Research Symposium

GenAI is rapidly evolving, making it crucial to investigate its uses and limitations. Popular films can shape social themes globally, yet many of these influences remain unexplored due to cultural barriers. This project's research has important applications, including:

  • Enhanced film analysis for less popular films in various countries and languages
  • Cultural preservation and lowered linguistic boundaries in film
  • Potential for future statistical analysis to determine correlation between social themes and popularity of films
  • Broader implications for the film industry and film studies

My hypothesis was that GenAI would be able to accurately analyze important social themes in niche French films.
