Focus On Form: Perceptions Of Portuguese Immersion Teacher When Implementing The Capa Model, Priscila Isabel Rebicki Prestes Apr 2025

Focus On Form: Perceptions Of Portuguese Immersion Teacher When Implementing The Capa Model, Priscila Isabel Rebicki Prestes

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates Portuguese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers' perceptions when implementing the CAPA Model, a structured Focus on Form Instruction (FFI) approach aimed at improving grammatical accuracy in content-based learning. While immersion students develop strong communication skills, research highlights persistent grammatical inaccuracies due to the emphasis on meaning-based instruction. The CAPA Model seeks to bridge this gap by integrating explicit grammar instruction, fostering metalinguistic awareness, and enhancing linguistic accuracy without detracting from content learning. Findings reveal that teachers recognize the model’s benefits but face challenges such as limited planning time, a lack of pre-adapted materials, and difficulties implementing all …

Investigation Of Temperature Control's Effects In Additive Friction Stir Deposition Of Al 7050-T7451, Jason Noah Glenn Apr 2025

Investigation Of Temperature Control's Effects In Additive Friction Stir Deposition Of Al 7050-T7451, Jason Noah Glenn

Theses and Dissertations

Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) is a friction stir based process that includes the addition of material extruding through a bore in the center of the rotating tool. The deformation of the material from the tool rotation and high pressures result in fully dense depositions printed at very high rates with forged like mechanical properties. While deposition properties of varying alloys have been increasingly published, little work has been done investigating control of the process and as with all additive processes, consistency and predictability are of significant concern before implementation can occur. One common control method implemented in Friction Stir …

The Use Of Equine-Assisted Services To Develop Life Skills And Improve Educational Outcomes In Young Adults With Disabilities, Mackenzie Marcum Apr 2025

The Use Of Equine-Assisted Services To Develop Life Skills And Improve Educational Outcomes In Young Adults With Disabilities, Mackenzie Marcum

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

Young individuals with disabilities often face significant challenges in acquiring essential life skills, primarily those with cognitive impairments. This often limits their ability to live independently and fully participate in daily activities. Without progress in developing these skills, individuals may struggle with tasks such as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). Equine-assisted services (EAS), as defined by The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, is "recommended as an optimal unifying term to refer to multiple services in which professionals incorporate horses and other equines to benefit people" (Wood et al., 2021).

A Comparison Of The Relationship Between Campus Writing Centers And Developmental Writing Programs At Two- And Four-Year Institutions, Kiley Truex

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Throughout the history of American composition instruction in higher education, the question of how best to support students who struggle with or come into college unprepared for academic writing has been a debated one. Two of the most commonplace models for additional student writing support are basic writing courses and writing centers, and institutions often have both. Furthermore, there is also a distinction between writing education at the four-year college level and writing education at the two-year college level, and this distinction comes into particularly sharp focus when it comes to examining both basic writing pedagogies and well as the …

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This project focuses on detecting fraudulent health insurance claims using machine learning techniques. The dataset includes various patient attributes, claim amounts, and medical details, which were preprocessed by handling missing values, encoding categorical features, and standardizing numerical data. Fraud detection was formulated as a classification problem, where claims in the top 5% of the cost distribution were labeled as potentially fraudulent. Several models, including Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and XG Boost, were trained and evaluated, with Random Forest providing the best performance after tuning.

To gain deeper insights, multiple visualizations were created to analyze fraud patterns based on age, region, …

Juvenile Treatment: A Systematic Review Of Methadone On Juveniles After Incarceration, Joshua Bortieh

Criminal Justice Scholarly Projects

Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) has emerged as a harm-reduction strategy for addressing opioid use disorder (OUD) among justice-involved juveniles. Despite its growing implementation, there remains limited consensus regarding its effectiveness in reducing recidivism, its ethical and legal implications, and the systemic barriers surrounding its administration. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) to examine the therapeutic, ethical, and criminological dimensions of MMT in juvenile justice populations. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and synthesized 15 peer-reviewed empirical studies published between 2010 and 2023. Data were sourced from four major electronic databases PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science using …

Unique sensory perceptions are not limited to just neurodivergent individuals (those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, and more), but also for those who do not have the ability to use one or more of their senses. While the information is curated with the intent for dance classrooms, it can …

Conformable Regulator Problems With Fixed Delay, Seth Baur, Joseph E. Smith, Nick Wintz Apr 2025

Conformable Regulator Problems With Fixed Delay, Seth Baur, Joseph E. Smith, Nick Wintz

2025 Student Academic Showcase

In this project, we consider processes guided by a conformable derivative first introduced by Khalil et al in 2014. This time-weighted derivative has many of the same properties as the classical derivative but lacks the semigroup property for the exponential. Here, we study a conformable linear system where the state and control are subject to the same fixed delay. Our process is also subject to wear and tear, represented by a cost functional. Our goal is to find an optimal control that minimizes this cost. This control is propagated by a quasi-Ricatti equation, which itself includes a time delay. Finally, …

Fishing For Solutions: Compensation For Bycatch Reduction In The Gulf Of Mexico Shrimp Fishery, Daniel W. Harris Apr 2025

Fishing For Solutions: Compensation For Bycatch Reduction In The Gulf Of Mexico Shrimp Fishery, Daniel W. Harris

LSU Master's Theses

Bycatch, unintentionally caught non-target species, harms the profitability of commercial fishing operations and leads to death and injury of hundreds of thousands of marine animals per year. In the Gulf of Mexico, commercial shrimpers are required to use a bycatch reduction device (BRD). Better BRDs are being tested to further reduce bycatch. Because their use will not be mandatory, it is important to measure shrimper willingness to voluntarily adopt this conservation technology to predict potential fleet participation. This study uses contingent valuation to elicit commercial shrimpers’ willingness to accept compensation for using these new devices.

We employ an incentivized payment …

The Most Beautiful Under Heaven: Selecting Views Of Modern China Through Travel Photography In Liangyou Huabao (The Young Companion), 1926-1937, Anne Marie Watson

Theses and Dissertations

Liangyou huabao (The Young Companion) was a prominent Chinese pictorial magazine, with 174 issues published monthly between 1926 and 1945. Liangyou entertained its Chinese audience with a variety of photographs documenting modern life. This thesis examines photographs of domestic travel photography in the magazine, arguing that editorial captions encouraged readers to associate images of China with allusions to traditional art and aesthetics. This occurred within a historical context where modernity was often associated with the pressures of Westernization, and where Chinese culture and civilization was sometimes characterized as outdated or irrelevant. By using travel photography to demonstrate how traditional culture …
