Tolkien, Modernism, And Mass Art, Matthew Thompson-Handell Jul 2026

Tolkien, Modernism, And Mass Art, Matthew Thompson-Handell

Journal of Tolkien Research

A good deal has been written in the last 30 years on the extent to which Tolkien's work can be aligned or associated with literary modernism. Arguments have been made both for and against, though in spite of the range of perspectives that have been considered, what has been missed is the question of difficulty. A central characteristic of modernism is its difficulty, its inaccessibility to a non-specialized reader. The Lord of the Rings is not difficult, nor inaccessible - indeed it can readily be characterised as mass art by virtue of its accessibility.

An Evaluation Of The “Police Response To Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Operations” Online Training Program, Anthony Galante, Leila Halawi

Publications

This study evaluates the impact of the “Police Response to Uncrewed Aircraft Systems Operations” online training program of officers from the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD). By measuring the effectiveness of the training through pretest and posttest assessments and considering variables such as educational background, length of service, and rank, this research underscores the training’s potential to enhance UAS response capabilities. Employing a self-selection sampling method, the study engaged 82 voluntary participants from the DBPD, revealing significant improvement across all groups in UAS knowledge and confidence levels. Despite limitations, these findings offer compelling evidence of the training’s efficacy and advocate …

The Pope, American Politics, And The Battle For Tolkien’S Soul In The Twenty-First Century, Kelsey A. Fuller-Shafer Jul 2026

The Pope, American Politics, And The Battle For Tolkien’S Soul In The Twenty-First Century, Kelsey A. Fuller-Shafer

Journal of Tolkien Research

This essay considers the contemporary ramifications of the use of Tolkien’s works and personhood in the political and cultural dialogues of the United States. Tolkien’s fiction was recently cited by Pope Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States, in his encyclical letter in May of 2026 reacting to artificial intelligence, in the same era that tech billionaires are selecting names for their AI companies from Tolkien’s legendarium. These actors find themselves not just in a dispute about ethical usage of AI, but also as commentators on and subjects to the growing political divide in the United States, and …

Caring In An Online Graduate Synchronous Learning Environment, Keith Higa Jul 2026

Caring In An Online Graduate Synchronous Learning Environment, Keith Higa

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This self-study examines how caring practices are understood, enacted, and experienced within a synchronous online graduate teacher-education environment. Although online programs have expanded substantially, limited research addresses how relational approaches translate into mediated instructional spaces. Guided by Noddings’s ethics of care, this inquiry integrates reflective self-study with participant interviews to explore how technological structures, instructor practices, and real-time interactions shape students’ experiences of care. Findings reveal a multidimensional model consisting of (a) technological or structural care, characterized by course organization, predictability, and flexibility, and (b) humanistic care, expressed through relational presence, acknowledgment, responsiveness, and emergent dialogue in synchronous sessions. Together, …

Courts, Science, And The Problem Of Accountable Knowledge: A Review Of Judicial Policy Making, Empirical Data And Scientific Evidence: Can Courts Manage The Twenty-First Century?, Rishabh Kachroo Jul 2026

Courts, Science, And The Problem Of Accountable Knowledge: A Review Of Judicial Policy Making, Empirical Data And Scientific Evidence: Can Courts Manage The Twenty-First Century?, Rishabh Kachroo

Indian Journal of Law and Technology

This review reads Rob van Gestel, Jurgen de Poorter, and Edward L. Rubin’s edited volume titled Judicial Policy Making, Empirical Data and Scientific Evidence: Can Courts Manage the Twenty-First Century? as a timely intervention into the evidentiary and institutional demands placed on contemporary courts. It argues that the volume’s key contribution lies in treating courts as knowledge institutions and its strongest suit lies in showing the limits of judicial intuition, anecdote, and inherited legal categories in dealing with such disputes. While the volume is left wanting in its account of knowledge accountability, it would nonetheless be important for scholars of …

“Pride Runs Through Our Veins”: A Qualitative Investigation Of Black Parents’ Ethnic-Racial Socialization Practices Among Black Youth With Disabilities, Nicole A. Telfer, Danielle J. Allen, Noreen Yazejian, Iheoma U. Iruka

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

While ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) practices are crucial in Black/African American families, little is known about ERS practices in Black families of Black children with disabilities. In the current study, we investigated ERS practices among Black/African American parents’ who are raising children with disabilities and how this may influence children’s outcomes. A total of N = 8 Black/African American parents were invited for semi-structured interviews to explore more deeply their ERS practices among their children with disabilities. Several themes emerged from the data, which highlights ERS practices from a DisCrit lens, as well as the overall experiences of parents and their …

Judaism And Catholicism: Possibilities Of An Inter-Spiritual Dialogue, David Neuhaus Jul 2026

Judaism And Catholicism: Possibilities Of An Inter-Spiritual Dialogue, David Neuhaus

Journal of Global Catholicism

This article examines the possibilities of an inter-spiritual dialogue between Catholics and Jews. Describing the transformation of the Catholic attitude to Jews andJudaism in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, moving from a teaching of contempt to one of respect, it analyses the far-reaching reformulations of Catholic theology that promote an interreligious dialogue. After centuries of traumatic history, Jewish reactions have been hesitant. However, the past decades have led to a burgeoning relationship that can indeed flower into a mutual inter-spiritual dialogue that deepens the faith of both Catholics and Jews.

Islam And Catholicism: Theology And Practice Of Inter-Spiritual Dialogue, Felix Koerner Jul 2026

Islam And Catholicism: Theology And Practice Of Inter-Spiritual Dialogue, Felix Koerner

Journal of Global Catholicism

This article explores foundations, preconditions, aims, persons, groups, practices, methods, texts, and criteria of Muslim–Christian inter-spiritual dialogue. In-ter-spiritual dialogue thrives within the network of other dialogical forms: dialogue of life and collaboration, of theological and practical understanding. This article argues that the spiritual dimension of dialogical encounter may itself constitute a critical site of moral reflection, enabling participants to perceive injustice more clearly and to respond to it more responsibly. Nevertheless, the integrity of in-ter-spiritual dialogue depends upon the cultivation of trust, candor, and a shared orientation toward mutual enrichment and spiritual purification. Where dialogue is subordinated to extrinsic strategic …

The Dialogue Of Spiritual Experience In Buddhist-Christian Encounter, S Mark Heim Jul 2026

The Dialogue Of Spiritual Experience In Buddhist-Christian Encounter, S Mark Heim

Journal of Global Catholicism

Can one learn more about one’s own religion through the practices of another? My positive answer to this question is illustrated in this paper by reflection on aspects of the Buddhist practice of emptiness, in specific connection with Christian under-standing of our lives as creatures. The Buddhist meditative practices I have in mind have several things in common. They are introspective (activated in one person’s inner consciousness) and premised on the Buddhist understanding of emptiness (specifically “no self ” teachings). Buddhist introspective practice takes at least three broad forms. One of these is a meditative analytical awareness of the contents …

Benefits Of Pet Friendly Work Environments On Physical, Mental, And Social Health Of Office Workers: A Systematic Review, Ahmed Radwan, Jenna Keeman, Tristan Hunzinger, Owen Wilson, Shayla Seymour

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Background: Pet-friendly workplace initiatives are increasingly common, yet the empirical evidence for benefits to office workers’ physical, mental, and social health is scattered and heterogeneous.

Objective: To synthesize evidence on health-related outcomes associated with pet-friendly work environments for office and desk-based workers, and to appraise the current level of evidence.

Methods: A PRISMA-guided systematic search (2014–2024) was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, OVID, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Two reviewers independently screened titles/abstracts and full texts, extracted data, and appraised study quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) checklists. Outcomes were coded and synthesized narratively within three domains: physical, mental, …

Holding Hands, Alexis Notarianni, Md

The Medicine Forum

My patient had already received the medications we reach for when patients are in pain and afraid — antiemetics, analgesics, and anxiolytics. The nasogastric tube was in place. What remained was not another intervention, but the simple act of being there.

My patient had been healthy until just months earlier, when his life changed abruptly. In the two hundred days since, illness had altered nearly every part of his body. Now he lay in bed in pain, breathing through a tracheostomy, receiving nutrition from a feeding tube. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he reached out and took my hand. …

An Examination Of Generative Ai In Medicine, J. Marco Cipriaso, Md, Trishya Srinivasan, Md

The Medicine Forum

The age of artificial intelligence (AI) is upon us. Specifically, generative AI has been transforming how we interface with the world by directly generating its own novel output.1 Medicine is not immune to this change. AI search tools such as OpenEvidence have shown promise by providing evidence-based recommendations, already proven to perform well in primary care settings, with additional promise for future applications.2 AI tools have taken over the note-writing process through ambient software, allowing physicians to dedicate more time to face-to-face interaction with their patients.3 These and other developments show clear reason to be excited about …

The Emotional Labor Of Clinicians And The Need For Reflective Support, Benedicta Olonilua, Bs, Evan Nardone, Md Jul 2026

The Emotional Labor Of Clinicians And The Need For Reflective Support, Benedicta Olonilua, Bs, Evan Nardone, Md

The Medicine Forum

Physicians who work in Palliative Care or adjacent fields like Oncology often bear a unique emotional weight in addition to the typical responsibilities that come with the job. The nature of their work puts them in frequent contact with serious illness, dying, and grief. Additionally, they are often required to engage in conversations that are not only medically complex but also deeply personal and, at times, emotionally charged. While this emotional labor is an inherent part of the job, it can become especially heavy when there is no space to process it. Over time, this can build up and eventually …

The Intersection Of Ventilator Support And Hospice In Late Als Diagnosis, J. Marco Cipriaso, Md, Kenna Hawes, Md, Margot Noyelle, Md, Megan Cecchine, Md

The Medicine Forum

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) often leads to respiratory failure that can be treated with respiratory support in the form of tracheostomy plus invasive mechanical ventilation. It typically occurs late in the disease course, often allowing patients to adequately prepare by discussing their goals of care. We describe a case of a patient whose ALS was diagnosed after he had TMV initiated. As a result, the patient and family faced a daily decision on when to withdraw ventilator support, and he was unable to achieve his ultimate wish to die at home. We highlight this to recognize that serious illnesses with …

Radiographic Imaging Of Power Injectable Medical Access Ports As A Supplemental Identification Tool, Nikhil Goyal, Md, Huy M. Do, Md, Alexandra P. Toscano, Bs, Lillian G. Spear, Bs Georgetown University, Lindsey A. Hazen, Rn, Les R. Folio, Do Jul 2026

Radiographic Imaging Of Power Injectable Medical Access Ports As A Supplemental Identification Tool, Nikhil Goyal, Md, Huy M. Do, Md, Alexandra P. Toscano, Bs, Lillian G. Spear, Bs Georgetown University, Lindsey A. Hazen, Rn, Les R. Folio, Do

The Medicine Forum

Medical access ports (MAPs) are implanted devices often used for intravenous administration of chemotherapeutic agents or contrast agents for CT or MR imaging. Improper MAP usage poses risk of catheter rupture; hence, proper identification and usage are essential. We demonstrate an approach for MAP identification based on their unique radiographic imaging features.

Radiation-Induced Biliary Strictures Leading To Recurrent Pyogenic Liver Abscesses: A Case Report, Rhea Ratan, Md, Beatriz Torre, Md, Rishi Pawa, Md

The Medicine Forum

Introduction

Radiation-induced biliary damage, including strictures, stenosis, cholangitis, and posthepatic cholestasis, is a rare complication of radiation therapy reported most frequently in the context of hepatobiliary cancers and other upper abdominal mal ignancies.1-3 This complication often occurs with a delayed presentation, with a variable latency period ranging from months to as late as decades after treatment.1-4 Histologic examination demonstrates segmental bile duct wall thickening, cholestasis, fibrosis, and features consistent with radiation injury.1,5 Most reported cases involve the common bile duct and major hepatic ducts, where endoscopic and percutaneous interventions remain feasible. These are identified during surveillance imaging, …

The Medicine Forum

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the second most common cause of cancer mortality in the United States. Current recommendations advise initiating colonoscopy at age 40, or 10 years earlier than the youngest affected first-degree relative (FDR), in individuals with a family history of CRC or advanced polyps (AP). Despite these guidelines, their translation into routine clinical counseling is not well defined. This study examines how often patients with CRC or AP receive guidance about early screening for FDRs.

A retrospective review was performed using electronic health records from an urban academic center. Patients diagnosed with CRC or AP between January 2019 …

Lvad Patient With Delayed Family Involvement Due To Incarceration, J. Marco Cipriaso, Md, Kathleen Mechler, Md

The Medicine Forum

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement requires an extensive support system for success. Patients who are incarcerated face unique challenges in achieving this due to prison rules. We describe a case in which an LVAD patient suffered a massive intracranial hemorrhage, leaving him unable to make his own decisions. Medical teams did not involve his family in admissions for his slow chronic decline, but family were asked to make decisions for him at this acute change causing them significant distress. We advocate that families of incarcerated patients be more routinely involved in provider communications and education related to their chronic …

When Brand Image Stabilizes Uncertainty: Towards Digital And Inclusive Strategies Based On Artificial Intelligence, Rhita Serir, Raja Temnati

Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)

In a context of profound transformation, contemporary marketing is evolving rapidly under the combined influence of digital transformation, artificial intelligence and Generation Z, whose behaviours are redefining consumption and communication norms. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic, global recession and market instability have increased the complexity and uncertainty faced by businesses. Strategic decision-making is becoming increasingly complex as technological tools multiply and consumer expectations diversify. Brand managers must therefore maintain coherence, relevance and credibility in unstable environments. Digital marketing emerges as a key strategic lever: integrating digital tools and artificial intelligence into communication and positioning strategies can improve audience …
