Letters From The Periphery: L.E. Faulkner’S Crusade Against Communism, Cameron Melendez May 2025

Letters From The Periphery: L.E. Faulkner’S Crusade Against Communism, Cameron Melendez

Honors Theses

This thesis explores L.E. Faulkner’s political activism. Faulkner, a railroad executive from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, launched a number of anti-communist crusades throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Utilizing his personal correspondence, political articles, and newspapers, this thesis argues that anti-communist networks were influential and powerful tools used by Faulkner and other local activists to shape the national discourse around anti-communism. Faulkner created an interconnected web of anti-communists that linked protestant fundamentalism, capitalist advocacy, racial politics, and Americanism. His 1943–1944 civic education campaigns with Rotary International and Kiwanis International and his 1954 opposition to the World Council of Churches serve as case studies …

Implementing Storytelling Into The Elementary School Classroom: A Best Practice Guide With Adaptable Lessons, Cali Reinhart May 2025

Implementing Storytelling Into The Elementary School Classroom: A Best Practice Guide With Adaptable Lessons, Cali Reinhart

Honors Theses

Incorporating storytelling projects and activities in the elementary classroom helps students become more engaged and interested in what they are being taught. Often, there is not enough time in the day to cover all the material, let alone teach students these concepts in fun and engaging ways that every student deserves. Therefore, teachers should be given the resources to help their students learn the material in a fun and appealing way, such as through storytelling. Previous research has shown that storytelling is a multisensory project that reinforces literacy and language skills, increases students’ retention of the information presented, and increases …

The Sexual Assault Survivor Experience Of Medical Forensic Examinations, Brielle Simonsen May 2025

The Sexual Assault Survivor Experience Of Medical Forensic Examinations, Brielle Simonsen

Honors Theses

Following a sexual assault, survivors may seek medical forensic examinations (MFEs) at hospitals. MFEs can be important in identifying and prosecuting the assailant and in receiving necessary physical and psychological care, yet many survivors choose not to undergo the examination. In this qualitative study, I explored survivor experiences of MFEs at United States hospitals to identify possible areas for improvement of the MFE experience. Understanding these experiences is essential to reducing barriers to care, minimizing further harm, and supporting survivor recovery.

While research links EQ to academic and communication skills in nursing and international medical students, limited data exist for U.S. medical students, particularly regarding curriculum type.

Objective: This study evaluates whether different curricula—Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Synergistic-Guided Learning (SGL)—are associated with differences in EQ and interpersonal communication skills (ICS) at Rowan-Virtua SOM.

Methods: EQ was measured using the MySkills Profile (EIQ16). ICS scores were derived from standardized patient encounters in the pre-clinical years. …

Transparent Wood, Rhetoric, And The Cycle Of Discovery, Sara Buie May 2025

Transparent Wood, Rhetoric, And The Cycle Of Discovery, Sara Buie

RhetTech

Transparent wood, first discovered in 1992 by Siegfried Fink, received little recognition until 2021, when it was deemed one of the year’s “best new discoveries.” Fink’s discovery of the material was originally only considered for its use within the field of forest ecology. However, when rediscovered decades later by two independent research teams, transparent wood was found to have far-reaching implications for improving technology display systems, like phone screens, and reducing buildings’ energy consumption. Often, researchers justify the value of their work through practical applications such as these, but practicality is especially subject to the rhetorical situation in which research …

Rawls On Justice In Gender: Tensions Of Intervening In Gender Equality, Gabrielle Hope May 2025

Rawls On Justice In Gender: Tensions Of Intervening In Gender Equality, Gabrielle Hope

Philosophy

When considering gender equality in society there are certain inclinations one makes concerning how it is to be combatted. One inclination being that in a society with a structured government that promises to be fair to all its citizens should in fact address cases of gender inequality. Yet following questions arise, if we are to expect that there be governmental intervention in cases of inequality, how are we to go about this intervention and how much intervention should be justified into citizen life, in short what is required by justice to combat this injustice. John Rawls believes he answers these …

Poor maternal nutrition (restricted and over-feeding) during gestation alters metabolism, growth, and body composition of offspring. It may also affect immune function. The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and efficacy of long-term immune challenge using lipopolysaccharide in sheep. Through two challenge weeks, each consisting of five days of lipopolysaccharide treatment, monitoring, and data collection, the treatment was found to be safe in sheep and effective to elicit an immune response. The data from this study will inform future studies on maternal nutrition in the University of Connecticut Animal Science Department.

The Effect Of Non-Profit Organizations On The Passage Of Climate Change Legislation In Connecticut, John-Henry Burke May 2025

The Effect Of Non-Profit Organizations On The Passage Of Climate Change Legislation In Connecticut, John-Henry Burke

Honors Scholar Theses

Connecticut has a long history of climate action. In this study, I looked into the effect that non-governmental organizations have on the passage of climate change legislation in Connecticut. Eighteen different climate policy stakeholders, including legislatures, non-governmental organization (NGO) staff members, youth activists and state employees were interviewed to gain their perspective on how non-profits forward climate initiatives. I found that non-profit organizations do have a significant impact on the passage of climate change legislation in Connecticut by working as providers of information to legislators and mobilizers of constituents. This impact can be limited by various political factors.

Redistricting And The Origins Of The Good Faith Presumption, Leonard C. Brahin May 2025

Redistricting And The Origins Of The Good Faith Presumption, Leonard C. Brahin

Barry Law Review

Evidentiary and substantive presumptions are a well-established tool that courts employ when addressing a variety of legal problems. These presumptions streamline litigation, avoid debate over minor disputes, and ensure that the most important issues can be addressed. But these same presumptions just as frequently close the courthouse doors on meritorious claims and preemptively shut down litigation where a disputed issue exists.

One area this occurs is redistricting. In the last fifty years, the Supreme Court of the United States has expanded its substantive presumptions in redistricting matters to permit facially discriminatory redistricting plans. By invoking the presumption of good faith, …

Measuring The Strategies To Cope With Shift Work Among Healthcare Workers, Khushi Mehta, Lindsay Ham May 2025

Measuring The Strategies To Cope With Shift Work Among Healthcare Workers, Khushi Mehta, Lindsay Ham

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

It is known that lack of sleep, no matter what career a person is in, is detrimental to the overall longevity and health of an individual. Balance of sleep can be easy to attain, especially if one’s work life is able to facilitate it. Healthcare workers, however, often do not have that luxury. Healthcare professionals work a variety of shifts ranging from night shifts, 12-16-hour shifts, regular daytime hours, and being on call during the night. These irregular working schedules can have a detrimental effect on their sleep quality and quantity. If healthcare workers don’t get enough sleep, it can …

5g Network Slice Vulnerabilities And Exploit Chaining Through Enablers, John Breeden May 2025

5g Network Slice Vulnerabilities And Exploit Chaining Through Enablers, John Breeden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Network slicing provides fundamental support for the enhanced features of 5G. Network slicing enablers, such as software-defined networking and network function virtualization facilitate the separation of the physical distributed infrastructures and the functions that create isolated slices. With this framework, the network slice is no longer under the control of a single entity. Multiple infrastructure providers share responsibility for the slice. The 5G architecture derives from multiple services, distributed over great distances, and managed by multiple parties. Each enabler and provider adds vulnerability to network slicing. We examine the interweaving of these enablers to identify vulnerabilities, discuss potential mitigation, and …

"Bad Things Happen In Philadelphia": Managing Stigma And Threats In The Wake Of False Criminal Accusations, Steven Windisch

Sociology and Criminology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the aftermath of the 2020 U.S. election, the boundary between activism and extremism blurred, with election officials reporting violent threats and false accusations of election fraud. From a symbolic interactionist perspective, these attacks provide a unique lens for examining the consequences of being falsely labeled a criminal. This study utilizes data from in-depth interviews with 15 election officials to explore the nature of informal false accusations, participants' subjective interpretations of these labels, and their behavioral and emotional strategies for managing their "spoiled identity." The findings highlight the criminalizing and dehumanizing effects of these accusations, with officials enduring verbal abuse, …
