The Inclusion Of Animals In Educational Settings: The Educators’ Perspective, Emma J. Vardy, Lauren R. Finka, Blair F. Sweeney May 2025

The Inclusion Of Animals In Educational Settings: The Educators’ Perspective, Emma J. Vardy, Lauren R. Finka, Blair F. Sweeney

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

The inclusion of animals within educational settings is not a new phenomenon, although the last several decades have certainly seen a growth in popularity. Despite increased uptake, little is known about the ways animals are typically being included within educational settings, and the nature of sessions that are being undertaken. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore, from the perspectives of educators, the general risks and benefits to both students and animals of including animals in schools, the types of activities undertaken, species included and their associated management, and the perceived impact on both students and animals. Fourteen …

The Policy Dilemmas Of Pesticides Management And Disposal In Tanzania, Paul J. Kaiser, John C. Morris May 2025

The Policy Dilemmas Of Pesticides Management And Disposal In Tanzania, Paul J. Kaiser, John C. Morris

Journal of African Policy Studies

The purpose of this paper is to systematically evaluate and analyze pesticides management and disposal in Tanzania employing a theoretical approach that emanates from current research on public policy implementation. This case demonstrates that the national and international context of public policy-making and inter-governmental agency cooperation and coordination are essential to understanding the current environmental situation in the country. Given the paucity of published, African case studies used in the theory-building process, this study also attempts to contribute to strengthening the empirical legitimacy and theoretical soundness of the comparative method of social scientific inquiry by including African realities in scholarly …

A Perennial Kind Of Service: Flannery O’Connor, Protégé And Mentor, Brent S. House May 2025

A Perennial Kind Of Service: Flannery O’Connor, Protégé And Mentor, Brent S. House

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Flannery O’Connor stands among the great authors of the second half of the twentieth century, with a canon of literary work—two novels and a National Book Award-winning collection of stories, along with essays, speeches, letters, and journals—that belies her limited years. If her life had been longer, she would have completed a greater body of work, but she also might have affected the development of creative writing pedagogy in the United States. O’Connor, after all, was one of the most successful of the early graduates of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, the first and most prestigious graduate program for creative writers. …

Feminism, Children And Environmental Policy In Zimbabwe, Saliwe Kawewe May 2025

Feminism, Children And Environmental Policy In Zimbabwe, Saliwe Kawewe

Journal of African Policy Studies

This study utilizes a feminist perspective in demonstrating how gender intersects with socioeconomic forces of over a century of patriarchal environmental endeavors such as global modernization: imperialism and colonialism as conditions that have historically perpetuated environmental degradation in Zimbabwe as elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa. The study examines how environmental policies of both pre and post independent Zimbabwe have had devastating consequences on the poor and marginalized, particularly women and girl children of this Third World in the nation. Additionally, the study proposes gender mainstreaming as a social networking model for socioeconomic and environmental sustainability through grassroots indigenous participation, capacity building, …

The Tortured Road Towards Peace In The Western Sahara, Festus Ohaegbulam May 2025

The Tortured Road Towards Peace In The Western Sahara, Festus Ohaegbulam

Journal of African Policy Studies

This paper attempts to provide a succinct background to the origins of the conflict in Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, between the Kingdom of Morocco and nationalists of the territory. It identifies the broad regional and international ramifications of the continuing conflict, which began in 1975, and describes efforts made by the Organization of African Unity [OAU] and the United Nations to resolve the conflict. It focuses most of its analysis on the major obstacles to the conflict's resolution, particularly the policy of the United States. The analysis shows that the greatest obstacle to the resolution of the conflict …

African Security In The Information Age, Uri J. Fisher, M. Shane Smith May 2025

African Security In The Information Age, Uri J. Fisher, M. Shane Smith

Journal of African Policy Studies

This article examines Africa's place in the information revolution and the security implications that flow from this relationship. All states in Africa now have Internet access, although the continent is still characterized by a lack of infrastructure, resources, and technology. We examine the many initiatives underway in Africa aimed at enhancing information and communication technologies. The African Network Initiative, the African Information Society Initiative, and UNESCO's Regional Information Network for Africa are only a few of the many that are trying to increase the continent's connectivity. Increased African security in economic and military matters will be dependent on the continent's …

Warlords, Resources And War In Africa: Who Arms, Who Pays And Who Trains?, Rasheed Draman May 2025

Warlords, Resources And War In Africa: Who Arms, Who Pays And Who Trains?, Rasheed Draman

Journal of African Policy Studies

Since the end of the Cold War, the nature of conflict has changed. A disturbing trend that has emerged with that change is warlords/rebel movements, resources, and greed. Today most conflicts are not driven by "loud discourse of grievance" but by the "silent voice of greed." While it is evident that most warlords rely on the resources they capture, they also rely on external governments to finance their war effort. This policy-oriented paper adds to the ongoing policy and academic debate by focusing mainly on the sources of arms, financial resources, and logistics for rebel movements, particularly in Africa. The …

Endocrinology Expert Witness: Bridging Healthcare And Law To Uphold Standards, Mihail Zilbermint, Stacey B. Lee

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

The role of a medical expert witness is vital in bridging the gap between the healthcare and legal systems, ensuring that justice is served while maintaining high standards of medical care. This perspective highlights the importance of medical professionals engaging in expert witness work, examining both the challenges and rewards of this role. Initially, community physicians may hesitate to participate due to misconceptions about legal risks or potential professional backlash. However, expert witness work provides a unique opportunity to supplement income, contribute to the integrity of the medical profession, and deepen medical knowledge.

The development of legal knowledge, such as …

The Ethics Of Insider Trading, Miles Morgan May 2025

The Ethics Of Insider Trading, Miles Morgan

Global Tides

In business ethics, insider trading has gone untouched by scholars, as the consensus is that insider trading is morally indefensible, however, questions have emerged regarding the moral responsibility of insiders. This paper engages with Analyzing Insider Trading from the Perspectives of Utilitarian Ethics and Rights Theory by Robert McGee to evaluate the relationship between applied ethics and insider trading. A satisfactory anti-insider trading account must be able to economically or philosophically explain why insider trading is morally wrong. The assumption that this is impossible may be due to a misunderstanding of how we decide what morality is or how economic …

Archaeology By The Book, But Which Book?: Archaeology And Nation Building In Germany And Israel, Verity C. Wray-Raabolle May 2025

Archaeology By The Book, But Which Book?: Archaeology And Nation Building In Germany And Israel, Verity C. Wray-Raabolle

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

Archaeology is a powerful tool wielded by nations to tell their own stories. How can two countries in different situations harness archaeology to tell their own national narratives? Through investigation of the archaeological heritage of Israel and Germany, both by their individual archaeologists as well as institutions such as museums, I have discovered the different ways in which nation states can utilize archaeology to their advantage. By choosing to excavate well-known sites, only display certain artifacts, or claim modernity through the science of the discipline, each nation strengthens their national identity via archaeology and related artifacts. Individual archaeologists have more …

Responsibility To The Land: Perspectives Of Farmers On Climate Change And Land Transition, Meira A. Smit May 2025

Responsibility To The Land: Perspectives Of Farmers On Climate Change And Land Transition, Meira A. Smit

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

Agriculture is a defining aspect of Minnesota and Wisconsin’s culture and identity, characterized by family farms, rolling hills blanketed with crops, and cows. Interspersed are small scale diversified farms and a growing number of emerging and young farmers. Another cultural mainstay is talking about weather, a ubiquitous conversation of Midwesterners. As weather events such as erratic rainfall, drought, and pest pressure become both more common and volatile, and long-term weather patterns shift from “normal”, it is important to ask farmers what they think about it. Adapting to changes and planning for resilience are what farmers have always done, yet increasing …

Hearing Caste: Dalit Resistance Through Folk Music In West Bengal, India, Antara Bhattacharyay May 2025

Hearing Caste: Dalit Resistance Through Folk Music In West Bengal, India, Antara Bhattacharyay

Music Honors Projects

Caste—a graded structure of hierarchy—has historically shaped identities in South Asia and persists to this day. In opposition, Dalits (caste-marginalized communities) have utilized diverse mediums to communicate their resistance. In this thesis, I analyze the role of music in Bengali Dalit resistance through the work of Dalit singer-songwriter Smritikana Howlader (b. 1960). Based on ethnographic research, I investigate how folk music becomes a mode of Dalit historiography. In particular, I explore how Howlader aims to transcend caste boundaries through song, evoking shared humanity. I argue that Howlader’s performances combat dominant caste discourse and Dalit erasure, furthering Bengali Dalit resistance.

Adding Libraries To The Equation: Mathematical Sciences’ Underutilization Of Academic Librarians, Jennifer L.C. Burke, Elizabeth C. Novosel, Daniel G. Kipnis, Rasitha R. Jayesekere

Libraries Scholarship

Academic librarians do not engage with all disciplinary departments equally. Despite equal or even greater efforts, some departments are less responsive to librarian outreach. One such department is mathematics. To understand mathematics departments’ relationships with their academic librarians, three mathematics librarians created a 20-question survey that was disseminated to mathematics faculty, instructors, and instructional staff in the United States and Canada. Of the 188 survey participants, more than a third reported that they never engage with their librarians, approximately half only do so occasionally, and a mere eight percent of participants collaborated with librarians to provide information literacy instruction (IL) …

Veils Of The Unseen, Shinwoo Song May 2025

Veils Of The Unseen, Shinwoo Song

Art Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the dynamic interplay between consciousness and unconsciousness and how this relationship influences visual language in my art practice. My research investigates how unconscious impulses and conscious choices intersect in the creative process, shaping artistic expression and viewer interpretation. I examine how visual art can serve as a medium through which hidden emotional and psychological states, such as memory, desire, and internal conflict, emerge and take form. Rooted in the practice of automatism and influenced by Surrealist strategies, my work engages with theories by Jacques Lacan, particularly his notion of the gaze, and Gilles Deleuze’s concepts of extraction …

A.C.T.S.: Accessing Care For Trafficking Survivors, Stephanie Johnson, Kaitlynn Leffler

Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations

Human trafficking has been a persistent societal problem with significant costs for states, the nation, and across the world. Victims struggle to recognize that they have endured having been trafficked and society lacks the awareness and understanding that is necessary to help. While many organizations have implemented programs aimed at helping victims escape and recover, victims often remain unaware of what resources are available.

Advancements in technology may allow victims a bridge to connecting with services and could offer assistance to law enforcement and prosecutors who are working to hold trafficking offenders accountable. Many younger victims today feel comfortable using …
