The Activists’ Choice: Ballot Initiatives As A Step Towards Pro-Choice Efforts, Levi C. Mahler May 2025

The Activists’ Choice: Ballot Initiatives As A Step Towards Pro-Choice Efforts, Levi C. Mahler

Culture, Society, and Praxis

Following the overturn of Roe V. Wade, many U.S. state legislatures failed to implement abortion rights that satisfy the general population. When the public disapproves of legislative law, some U.S. states allow citizens and activists the right to pursue a ballot initiative. With enough voter signatures, these ballots can turn into new laws. However, with ballot initiatives being a multi-step, lengthy process, what ultimately pushes activists to pursue this path? My research analyzes this novel intersection of political science and sociology fields to contribute to the current lack of literature on activists' decisions to pursue ballot measures for abortion rights. …

Scaffolding Subversion: Preparing Pre-Service Teachers To Sustain Justice-Oriented Action, Christopher Weiler, Kathleen Brinegar, Kristie Smith, Jessica Demink-Carthew

i.e.: inquiry in education

Dominant sociopolitical ideologies influence educational policy and threaten school-based equity. As teacher educators called to support the development of pre-service teachers (PSTs) who advance justice in their practice, we are compelled to consider our work against the contemporary sociopolitical context. Through collaborative critical discussions, we sought to explore what PSTs need to sustain their engagement in justice-oriented action beyond their teacher preparation program. The ideas and practices that emerged as essential to us as teacher educators in this era were the following: (a) Understanding and Sustaining Self, (b) Bridging Self and Community, (c) Cultivating Equitable Communication, and (d) Subverting Oppression, …

The Architectonic Frames: Dialogic Leadership, Surveillance And The Problem Of Invisible Pedagogies, Jeremy Dennis May 2025

The Architectonic Frames: Dialogic Leadership, Surveillance And The Problem Of Invisible Pedagogies, Jeremy Dennis

i.e.: inquiry in education

Scholars and practitioners seldom consider pedagogy as a starting point in their appreciations of the role of leadership in education. However, the rise of invisible pedagogies may warrant a revaluation of this practice. Invisible pedagogies are enabled by cloud-based learning management platforms and their data-driven algorithms and protocols, which incentivize opaque practices and the monetization of dialogism in the form of surveillance textualism or shadow texts. As such, some scholars predict that the future growth of invisible pedagogies is inevitable. Even though dialogic leadership is positioned to calibrate the trajectory of invisible pedagogies and explicate surveillance textualism, it is …

Healing In Relation: Honoring Post-Graduate Grief As An Opportunity For Relational Scholarship, Tanya J. Behrisch, Anna Rumjahn, Chris Yakimov May 2025

Healing In Relation: Honoring Post-Graduate Grief As An Opportunity For Relational Scholarship, Tanya J. Behrisch, Anna Rumjahn, Chris Yakimov

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

This paper is a three-way conversation about grief that follows a graduate program. We explore our experiences with post-graduate grief in community, attending to each other’s sense of loss following separation from supervisors, theses, and graduate programs. In committing to slow scholarship, processes—such as navigating feelings and living—have been valued over producing a manuscript quickly. Slowness, including long gaps between meetings, enabled us to follow the diverse contours of quiet alchemical processes such as grieving, opening up to emptiness, self-acceptance, being enough, and letting go. After years of compression and dialogic friction with her mentor, Tanya confronts feelings akin to …

Isolation And Characterization Of Exosome From Cancer Stem Cells-Derived From Glioblastoma Cell Line, Afira Beig, Manjula Kambi, Vijay M. Kumbar, Kajol T Kammar, Krutika Lolsure, Dimple Saikia, Surya Pratap Singh

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Background: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a stubborn subpopulation that fuel therapy resistance, tumor recurrence, and metastasis. In glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) — one of the deadliest brain tumors — CSCs make treatment especially challenging. Here, we set out to isolate, characterize, and compare exosomes released by CSCs and non-CSCs in the U87 glioblastoma cell line.

Methods: We grew U87 cells in serum-free, growth-factor-rich conditions to encourage tumor sphere formation, isolating CSCs. Flow cytometry confirmed CSC identity with strong CD133 positivity. To test chemo-resistance, we measured temozolomide (TMZ) IC50 values using an MTT assay. We isolated exosomes from CSCs and …

Strengthening Regulatory Standards For The Refurbished Medical Devices, Krishna Singh, Manan Sharma, Ashok Kumar, Sweety Sharma

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Medical devices are essential in healthcare, with a wide range of over 500,000 types, from simple from simple tools like wheelchairs to complex machines such as pacemakers. These devices are categorized into four risk classes, from Class I (low risk) to Class III (high risk). Refurbished medical devices, which are previously used items restored to their original quality, offer a cost-effective solution, particularly in low-resource settings. However, they can pose risks such as contamination or worn parts if not properly maintained. Refurbishment involves repairs, reconditioning, software updates, and part replacements to meet manufacturer standards.

The global refurbished medical devices market …

[2025 Honorable Mention] Racial Marginalization And Pesticide Exposure In Monterey County, Haleigh Fagundes May 2025

[2025 Honorable Mention] Racial Marginalization And Pesticide Exposure In Monterey County, Haleigh Fagundes

Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award

This paper examines the concept of environmental racism in the context of harmful pesticides and their disproportionate use in prominently Hispanic communities. These communities continue to face the consequences of exposure despite their activism. The concept of environmental patriotism, as proposed by Anne Todd in Communicating Environmental Patriotism: A Rhetorical History of the American Environmental Movement (2013), is incompatible with the data that supports the existence of environmental racism. In this piece Todd argues that channeling the pride one feels for their country is an effective way of promoting environmental efforts amongst individual citizens. The data to be presented denies …

The Power Of Storytelling: Creatively Facilitating Conceptual Change In The Classroom, Mackenzie S. Rose, Marcus Johnson May 2025

The Power Of Storytelling: Creatively Facilitating Conceptual Change In The Classroom, Mackenzie S. Rose, Marcus Johnson

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Conceptual knowledge encompasses understanding the interrelationships among multiple pieces of information. Misconceptions of these interrelationships illustrate the need for effective educational strategies to facilitate conceptual change, with the goal of facilitating changes in learner understanding to appropriate, accurate, and complete concepts. Strategies, such as refutation texts, have proven effective in addressing science misconceptions, yet there is a prominent gap in research on conceptual change in nonscience subjects and the use of storytelling to facilitate such change. Storytelling, presented in a range of educational subjects, invites learners to engage in social discourses and problem-solving exercises. Prompted by classroom storytelling practices, creativity, …

The Jacod-Yor Theorem For Sigma Martingales And The Second Fundamental, Moritz Sohns May 2025

The Jacod-Yor Theorem For Sigma Martingales And The Second Fundamental, Moritz Sohns

Journal of Stochastic Analysis

In this paper, we prove the Jacod-Yor Theorem for sigma martingales, a class of processes that generalize local martingales and play a pivotal role in financial mathematics. While the Jacod-Yor Theorem has been extensively studied for L2-martingales, martingales, and local martingales, no prior version exists for sigma martingales. Our result establishes the connection between sigma martingales and their martingale representation properties, addressing a critical gap in the literature. As an application, we prove the Second Fundamental Theorem of Asset Pricing for markets where price processes are modeled as sigma martingales.

Social-Emotional Learning Curricula's Impact On Elementary School Students, Ethan J. Sindelir May 2025

Social-Emotional Learning Curricula's Impact On Elementary School Students, Ethan J. Sindelir

Graduate Teacher Education

Abstract

Most elementary educators might have argued that they always taught social-emotional learning (SEL) in general education classrooms. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted this crucial aspect of education, with students missing out on valuable opportunities to develop their social skills at school. In response, several schools adopted more explicit social-emotional learning curricula. While this pedagogical approach has become more prevalent in recent years, educational leaders need to understand the impact that this approach has on their students.

This paper reviewed 15 literature articles to guide educational leaders, primarily in the elementary domain, seeking to understand how SEL curricula impact students. …

Theses and Graduate Projects

The high suicide rate among U.S. active-duty military personnel and veterans is a significant public health concern. Despite the high prevalence rate of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) among this population, service members are less likely to seek mental health services compared to the civilian population. Factors such as fear of career harm, stigma, and barriers to care contribute to this avoidance. This study aimed to investigate if service members in civilian-equivalent (non-combat) jobs are less likely to disclose psychological symptoms compared to those in combat-related career fields and to assess the impact of perceived importance …

Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the rise and fall of the silk industry in both the United States and Japan in the first half of the twentieth century. While silk had been a valuable commodity for millennia for royalty, aristocrats, and the extremely wealthy, the opening of Japan's ports in 1853 soon made silk more accessible to lower classes around the world.

Consequently, Japan's newfound wealth catapulted her status among other rich and powerful nations. Japan's military might, financed in large part by the silk trade and displayed by her victory over Russia in 1905, earned her even more prestige on the …

"We're Not Gonna Take It": The Parents' Music Resource Center And Reformist Tendencies In American Society, Nathaniel Todd Belcik

Dissertations and Theses

The Parent's Music Resource Center is a cultural curiosity that few historians have examined. Started by Tipper Gore and Susan Baker, the wives of prominent politicians, they advocated for a warning label on music with explicit lyrics and achieved their goal within only a few years of their creation. This thesis aims to contextualize the PMRC within a broader context of middle-to-upper class reformist movements. Many have argued that the PMRC falls on the conservative end of the political spectrum. Yet, a more complete story can be told by situating the organization within a reformist tendency in American history, thus …
