Improving Student Outcomes, Brenda Burton Jun 2025

Improving Student Outcomes, Brenda Burton

Education Theses and Dissertations

This improvement science dissertation in practice was conducted to make an improvement in education practice to positively affect student outcomes. Plan -> Do -> Study -> Act cycles (Bryk et al., 2015) were employed to identify a specific problem of practice, determine root cause(s), advance change theory, and define potential solutions. Many stakeholders were consulted and the initial phase evaluated the existing condition. Results informed the design of an intervention which was then implemented and evaluated in a second phase. Findings showed that a novel way of communication, the introduction of video technology, was correlated with improved student perceptions, self-regulation, …

A Developmental Texture Framework For Food Texture Progression: Implications For Feeding Development, Oral Motor Skills, And Pediatric Feeding Disorder, Amy L. Delaney, Sarah Staskiewicz, Suzanne Evans Morris, Sarah Smith-Simpson, Praveen S. Goday Jun 2025

A Developmental Texture Framework For Food Texture Progression: Implications For Feeding Development, Oral Motor Skills, And Pediatric Feeding Disorder, Amy L. Delaney, Sarah Staskiewicz, Suzanne Evans Morris, Sarah Smith-Simpson, Praveen S. Goday

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

The introduction of food textures in a child's first 2 years of life plays a vital role in growth, nutrition, and feeding development. However, the absence of a standardized texture framework for studying texture progression limits both pediatric feeding research and the ability to diagnose pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) based on age-appropriate expectations. To address this gap, authors Delaney and Goday proposed data sharing from the Nestlé Feeding Infant-Toddler Study (FITS) to explore texture progression and define age-appropriate texture expectations. In response, Nestlé assembled a multidisciplinary panel of feeding experts to create standardized textures but did not provide financial or …

The Mda's Impact: Going Beyond Insurance Reimbursements, Todd Christy D.D.S. Jun 2025

The Mda's Impact: Going Beyond Insurance Reimbursements, Todd Christy D.D.S.

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Dr. Todd Christy, MDA Immediate Past President, acknowledges that inadequate insurance reimbursement rates are a major concern for dental practices. He explains that federal antitrust laws restrict the MDA from directly intervening to "fix" these rates. However, the article emphasizes that the MDA provides significant value and advocacy in many other areas crucial to dentists. Key achievements include eliminating the tax on dental prosthetics, legislating network leasing protections, expanding kindergarten oral health assessments, and regulating mobile dentistry. The MDA also offered vital support during the COVID-19 pandemic, advocated for increased Medicaid facility fees for anesthesia procedures, and assists members with …

Thailand V. Katanyu Muenkhamruang “Pan”, Andrew Khoo, Human Rights Institute Jun 2025

Thailand V. Katanyu Muenkhamruang “Pan”, Andrew Khoo, Human Rights Institute

Human Rights Institute

The criminal proceedings against Ms. Katanyu Muenkhamruang (“Pan”), a 27-year-old Thai student and pro-democracy activist, violated international fair trial standards and Thailand’s human rights obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Pan was convicted under Thailand’s sedition law and the Computer-Related Crimes Act for Facebook posts promoting peaceful anti-government protests in 2021. The trial revealed numerous due process violations, including violation of the presumption of innocence, reliance on unsubstantiated claims, and a lack of reasoned judgment. Despite the absence of direct evidence linking Pan to the alleged posts, the court inferred guilt, and arbitrarily disregarded exculpatory …

From Promise To Performance: Reforming Blended Finance For Scale, Perrine Toledano, Ana M. Camelo Vega, Tucker Wilke

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

Blended finance has the potential to help close the sustainable development financing gap. Strategically combining public and philanthropic capital to unlock private investment, it has proven to be an effective tool to de-risk impact investments. But without bold, structural reform, it risks remaining a niche tool – promising in theory, underperforming in practice. Drawing on over 65 expert interviews and in-depth analysis, this report from the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI) maps the systemic barriers preventing blended finance from operating at scale, and outlines a practical path forward. With bold leadership and coordinated reform, blended finance can become a …

Course Material Or External Factors?: Assessing Student Perceptions That Impede Learning In Engineering Education, Eleazar Marquez, Samuel Garcia Jr.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Engineering courses are mathematically inclined and rigorous in nature. Numerous pedagogical methods such as communication strategies, learning environments, and visual supplements have been designed and implemented to promote student learning, engagement, and success in rigorous topics. As such, engineering students are encouraged to allot sufficient time to recurrently process lecture notes, attend office hours, or inquire about ambiguous technical content to fully assimilate course material. In this study, students enrolled in two engineering courses (Rigid Body Dynamics and Engineering Analysis) were evaluated to identify which aspects (course material or external factors) generated the most predicaments during a semester span. The …

Supplementation With Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food Has No Effect On Adverse Outcomes Among Undernourished Children Aged 6–59 Months With Severe Pneumonia, Damalie Nalwanga, Elisa Giallongo, Victor Musiime, Sarah Kiguli, Peter Olupot-Olupot, Florence Alaroker, Robert Opoka, Abner Tagoola, Mainga Hamaluba, Christabel Mogaka

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Objectives: To investigate the effect of supplementation with ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) on adverse outcomes among undernourished children aged 6–59 months with severe pneumonia.

Methods: This secondary analysis of the COAST-Nutrition (ISRCTN10829073) included children hospitalized for severe pneumonia in Uganda and Kenya. Undernutrition was defined as having either a weight-for-age z score, height-for-age z score, or weight-for-height/length z score below the median of the WHO reference population (< 0) or mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) below 13.5 cm. Participants were randomized to receive 1 sachet of RUTF daily for 8 weeks in addition to the usual diet (intervention) or usual diet alone (control). The primary composite outcome for adverse events was any one of mortality, re-admission, or deterioration of nutritional status by day 90 of follow-up.

Results: Of 846 main trial participants, 741 (88%) met the inclusion criteria (intervention: 374 versus control: 367). Of 687 (93%) participants in whom the primary outcome was assessed, 370 …

Postoperative Caregiver Decision Regret Following Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Surgery., Rohit Nallani, Nathan Farrokhian, Meghan Tracy, Kevin J. Sykes, Jill M. Arganbright

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Decision regret (DR) is a powerful factor in medical decision-making, particularly for surgical decisions which carry multiple risks, impact quality of life (QOL), and have uncertain outcomes. While prior studies have investigated caregiver DR after tonsillectomy and otologic surgery, there is a paucity of data assessing DR following pediatric otolaryngology procedures. The aim of this study is to measure DR following velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) surgery.

METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study with chart review was performed of caregivers of children who had VPD surgery performed by a single surgeon at a tertiary children's hospital. Demographic, medical, and surgical history were …

"Sex Out Of Boredom": Key Stakeholders' Perspectives On Teen Pregnancy Prevention In Emerging Immigrant Latino Rural Communities., Romina Barral, J Dennis Fortenberry, Astrid Guerrero Avitia, Mariana Ramirez, Abbey R. Masonbrink, Claire D. Brindis

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

INTRODUCTION: Teen pregnancy (TP) rates are 1.5 times higher among Latina youth than the United States national average and one-third times higher in rural counties. The Socio-Ecological framework recognizes the myriad of issues that impact TP, including four bidirectional levels of influence on teenagers' behaviors: macro, community, institutional, and interpersonal levels. We aim to fill critical knowledge gaps regarding the influence of key community stakeholders living in rural, Latino-majority communities shaping Latino/a, immigrant adolescents' TP-related environments.

METHODS: A purposive sample of 48 key stakeholders was drawn from three rural counties (Finney, Ford, and Seward) in southwestern Kansas from 2016 to …

This article reviews the psychological distress experienced by NICU families, including anxiety, postpartum depression (PPD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in addition to providing recommendations for clinicians at the individual, institutional, and national level. Currently, mental health screenings, specialized evaluations, and treatment options are not routinely offered to NICU families and are frequently under-utilized when offered. Here we provide expert opinion recommendations to address challenges in supporting universal screening, offering bedside interventions, including trained mental health professionals in care plans, updating neonatology training competencies, and advocating for policies that support the mental health of NICU families. We advocate that mental …
