Strategies Minority Small Business Owners Use To Obtain Access To Capital, Marchelle Ronique Yearby Jun 2025

Strategies Minority Small Business Owners Use To Obtain Access To Capital, Marchelle Ronique Yearby

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Minority small business owners (MSBOs) often experience significant challenges in securing business capital, which is critical for sustaining and growing their businesses. MSBOs are concerned with the lack of business capital because it restricts their ability to expand operations, innovate, and generate employment within their communities. The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study, which was grounded in the financial inclusion theory, was to identify and explore strategies MSBOs employ to secure access to capital. The participants were nine MSBOs in the Southeastern United States, each of whom had successfully maintained and secured working capital to sustain a profitable business for …

Pretty And Problematic: The Use Of Music In Guadagnino's 'Call Me By Your Name', Brandon L. Foskett

Deliberately Queer Journal

Tension in the reception of the American-Italian film Call Me by Your Name (dir. Guadagnino, 2017)—as a beautiful film that implicitly condones a problematic narrative—is shaped in part by its compilation soundtrack. Already lauded as a timeless masterpiece in cinematography, sensuality, and music, the film also receives steadfast criticism regarding its portrayal of homosexuality and alleged condoning of interage desire between Elio, a 17-year-old Italian-French boy, and Oliver, a 24-year-old American man. In this paper, I analyze five musical episodes from the film, including The Psychedelic Furs’ “Love My Way,” Ravel’s Une barque sur l’océan, and Sufjan Stevens’s “Mystery …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Metformin is commonly used to manage type 2 diabetes (T2D) and is being investigated for its potential antiproliferative effects in cancer, particularly in patients with both T2D and malignancies. Drug resistance can develop with any therapeutic agent, and metformin is no exception. As we showed in our previous study, metformin-resistant MDA-MB-468 (MET-R) cells exhibited an EMT-like phenotype. Many transcription factors, as well as miRNAs, can contribute to this altered phenotype. Our current study identifies the contribution of hsa-miR-26a-5p expression to the previously observed phenotype. Materials and methods: By utilizing bioinformatic tools, we identified hsa-miR-26a-5p, whose expression was significantly altered …

Dice: An Examination Of Online Dating And Neuroqueer Identity In New Girl, Ashley D. Steele

Deliberately Queer Journal

This paper explores the representation of neurodiversity in popular media, with a specific focus on the television show New Girl. Through a critical analysis of Season 4, Episode 2 ("Dice"), I examine the episode alongside academic and online discussions surrounding female Autistic representation, dating while neurodivergent, and how the character Jessica Day (played by Zooey Deschanel) is often interpreted as Autistic by fan communities. The analysis highlights the pressure on Autistic individuals—both fictional and real—to adopt neurotypical behaviors for the comfort of others, particularly in online dating contexts. I also explore the importance of fan-created content in shaping conversations …

In Transit: Being Non-Binary In A World Of Dichotomies (Review), Kennan Dykstra

Deliberately Queer Journal

In Transit: Being Non-Binary in a World of Dichotomies is a book written by Dex Anderson that explores what it is to be gender nonconformant. With a specific look at the nonbinary experience, the author deconstructs binary ideas about gender through discussions of their own experiences, LGBTQ+ history, and media representation. This review encapsulates the content and structure of Anderson’s book, chapter-by-chapter, to analyze how well it communicates the importance of nonbinary and transgender visibility. This review also examines how well it communicates to the intended audience—not those who are unsympathetic to gender non-conformant identities but those who are newly …

Digital Resistance And The Political Economy Of Authoritarian Decline And Economic Liberalization In Ethiopia, Anaol Dalle Jun 2025

Digital Resistance And The Political Economy Of Authoritarian Decline And Economic Liberalization In Ethiopia, Anaol Dalle

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation aims to examine the impact increased consumption of digital technologies, like social media and the internet, has on the stability and autonomy of low-capacity authoritarian countries. By using Ethiopia (2015-2021) as a case study, the dissertation argues that the sudden adoption and proliferation of digital platforms serves as an exogenous shock that pushes the state into a critical juncture that unravels institutional equilibria and transforms domestic incentive structures and institutions. This creates a power vacuum, which triggers a period of intense, and often violent, competition between elite groups, significantly destabilizing the state. In the absence of a cohesive …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Despite advancements in chemotherapeutic strategies, drug resistance remains a major barrier to effective cancer treatment. While primary prostate cancers (PC) can be treated with surgery and radiotherapy, treatment options for recurrent PC are limited. Upon progression to the castration-resistant (CR) phase, therapies rely on taxanes (chemotherapeutic drugs) like docetaxel (Dtx) and cabazitaxel (Cbz); however, resistance to taxanes is common in CRPC, highlighting the importance of identifying underlying molecular mechanisms or targets in resistant cells.Materials and methods: In transcriptome (RNA sequencing) analyses comparing taxane-resistant PC cells (resistant to both Dtx and Cbz) with parental (nonresistant, sensitive) cells, butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) was …

Voclosporin‐Induced Gingival Enlargement: A Case Report, Dimitris N. Tatakis

Faculty Scholarship

The gingiva (gums) is often a site in the mouth where changes or reactions can occur in response to certain systemic medications. Some drugs, particularly those used to treat autoimmune conditions or following organ transplants, can cause the gums to grow excessively, a condition known as drug-induced gingival enlargement (also known as gingival overgrowth). In this report, we document the case of a 27-year-old woman with lupus nephritis who developed gingival enlargement after starting a medication called voclosporin. This drug is a newer treatment option for lupus nephritis, but until now had not been linked to gingival enlargement. The patient …
