Event Security: A Grounded Model Of Risk Communication And Resource Negotiation Between Security And Safety Actors, Tin L. Nguyen, Erin M. Kearns Aug 2025

Event Security: A Grounded Model Of Risk Communication And Resource Negotiation Between Security And Safety Actors, Tin L. Nguyen, Erin M. Kearns

Reports, Projects, and Research

Event security at mass gatherings must manage both safety (accidents) and security (human-caused harm) risks across many disciplines (law enforcement, private security, emergency management, medical, venue staff). NCITE researchers have developed a grounded, data-driven model to explain how risk is communicated and how resources are negotiated among those actors. Using field observations, interviews, and document review from two large Midwestern events—a statewide cycling event (~18,000 registrants) and a three‑day music festival (~20,000 attendees)—the authors applied constant comparison methods to elucidate cross-cutting themes. The model shows that practitioners hold different “risk frames” (how they view threats and vulnerabilities), and gaps between …

Focus: Evaluating Pre-Trained Vision-Language Models On Underspecification Reasoning, Kankan Zhou, Yibin Lai, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Humans possess a remarkable ability to interpret underspecified ambiguous statements by inferring their meanings from contexts such as visual inputs. This ability, however, may not be as developed in recent pre-trained visionlanguage models (VLMs). In this paper, we introduce a novel probing dataset called FOCUS to evaluate whether state-of-the-art VLMs have this ability. FOCUS consists of underspecified sentences paired with image contexts and carefully designed probing questions. Our experiments reveal that VLMs still fall short in handling underspecification even when visual inputs that can help resolve the ambiguities are available. To further support research in underspecification, FOCUS will be released …

The proper use of Android app permissions is crucial to the success and security of these apps. Users must agree to permission requests when installing or running their apps. Despite official Android platform documentation on proper permission usage, there are still many cases of permission abuse. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the Android permission landscape, highlighting trends and patterns in permission requests across various applications from the Google Play Store. By distinguishing between benign and malicious applications, we uncover developers’ evolving strategies, with malicious apps increasingly requesting fewer permissions to evade detection, while benign apps request more to …

Explainable Multimodal Sentiment Analysis Of Social Media Visual Content For Child Safety, Yee Sen Tan, Zhaoxia Wang Aug 2025

Explainable Multimodal Sentiment Analysis Of Social Media Visual Content For Child Safety, Yee Sen Tan, Zhaoxia Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ensuring the safety and well-being of children is increasingly important, especially in a world where visual content is pervasive. This paper proposes a novel multimodal, multilingual, and multiclass sentiment analysis method for social media content, aimed at improving content moderation for child safety. Our approach integrates textual, visual, and audio data from videos, categorizing sentiment into four levels: positive, slightly negative, negative, and strongly negative, enabling granular detection of harmful content. To enhance explainability and trust, we also leverage interpretable mechanisms to analyze the contributions of each modality. Evaluation of our method demonstrates strong generalization across diverse video types, and …

Taclr: A Scalable And Efficient Retrieval-Based Method For Industrial Product Attribute Value Identification, Yindu Su, Huike Zou, Lin Sun, Ting Zhang, Haiyang Yang, Chen Li Yu, David Lo, Qingheng Zhang, Shuguang Han, Jufeng Chen Aug 2025

Taclr: A Scalable And Efficient Retrieval-Based Method For Industrial Product Attribute Value Identification, Yindu Su, Huike Zou, Lin Sun, Ting Zhang, Haiyang Yang, Chen Li Yu, David Lo, Qingheng Zhang, Shuguang Han, Jufeng Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Product Attribute Value Identification (PAVI) involves identifying attribute values from product profiles, a key task for improving product search, recommendation, and business analytics on e-commerce platforms. However, existing PAVI methods face critical challenges, such as inferring implicit values, handling outof-distribution (OOD) values, and producing normalized outputs. To address these limitations, we introduce Taxonomy-Aware Contrastive Learning Retrieval (TACLR), the first retrieval-based method for PAVI. TACLR formulates PAVI as an information retrieval task by encoding product profiles and candidate values into embeddings and retrieving values based on their similarity. It leverages contrastive training with taxonomy-aware hard negative sampling and employs adaptive inference …

From Risk To Resilience: Towards Assessing And Mitigating The Risk Of Data Reconstruction Attacks In Federated Learning, Xiangrui Xu, Zhize Li, Yufei Han, Bin Wang, Jiqiang Liu, Wei Wang Aug 2025

From Risk To Resilience: Towards Assessing And Mitigating The Risk Of Data Reconstruction Attacks In Federated Learning, Xiangrui Xu, Zhize Li, Yufei Han, Bin Wang, Jiqiang Liu, Wei Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data Reconstruction Attacks (DRA) pose a significant threat to Federated Learning (FL) systems by enabling adversaries to infer sensitive training data from local clients. Despite extensive research, the question of how to characterize and assess the risk of DRAs in FL systems remains unresolved due to the lack of a theoretically-grounded risk quantification framework. In this work, we address this gap by introducing Invertibility Loss (InvLoss) to quantify the maximum achievable effectiveness of DRAs for a given data instance and FL model. We derive a tight and computable upper bound for InvLoss and explore its implications from three perspectives. First, …

Fine‑Tuning Multimodal Large Language Models For Product Bundling, Xiaohao Liu, Jie Wu, Zhulin Tao, Yunshan Ma, Yinwei Wei, Tat-Seng Chua Aug 2025

Fine‑Tuning Multimodal Large Language Models For Product Bundling, Xiaohao Liu, Jie Wu, Zhulin Tao, Yunshan Ma, Yinwei Wei, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent advances in product bundling have leveraged multimodal information through sophisticated encoders, but remain constrained by limited semantic understanding and a narrow scope of knowledge. Therefore, some attempts employ In-context Learning (ICL) to explore the potential of large language models (LLMs) for their extensive knowledge and complex reasoning abilities. However, these efforts are inadequate in understanding mulitmodal data and exploiting LLMs' knowledge for product bundling. To bridge the gap, we introduce Bundle-MLLM, a novel framework that fine-tunes LLMs through a hybrid item tokenization approach within a well-designed optimization strategy. Specifically, we integrate textual, media, and relational data into a unified …

Collisionrepair: First‑Aid And Automated Patching For Storage Collision Vulnerabilities In Smart Contracts, Yu Pan, Wanjing Han, Yue Duan, Mu Zhang Aug 2025

Collisionrepair: First‑Aid And Automated Patching For Storage Collision Vulnerabilities In Smart Contracts, Yu Pan, Wanjing Han, Yue Duan, Mu Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Storage collision vulnerabilities, a significant security risk in upgradeable smart contracts, often arise when a user-facing proxy contract and a backend logic contract share storage space. While static analysis techniques can detect such issues, they often over-approximate program states, leading to false positives and requiring developers to manually verify each issue, giving attackers time to exploit any overlooked vulnerabilities. To address this, we propose COLLISIONREPAIR, an automated patching technique for mitigating storage collision risks. COLLISIONREPAIR monitors storage access sequences between proxy and logic contracts by defining an "ownership" property for storage locations. It then replays historical transactions to recover existing …

Prism: To Fortify Widget Based User‑App Data Exchanges Using Android Virtualization Framework, Yingtat Ng, Zhe Chen, Haiqing Qiu, Xuhua Ding Aug 2025

Prism: To Fortify Widget Based User‑App Data Exchanges Using Android Virtualization Framework, Yingtat Ng, Zhe Chen, Haiqing Qiu, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present Prism, an UI hardening technique for an Android app to safeguard its widgets against a corrupted kernel. Prism ensures secure interface rendering and allows for visual authentication, which developers could use to enable user intent confidentiality protection. Our design leverages the recent Android Virtualization Framework with minimal changes to the existing UI framework and graphics subsystem. It is much easier to deploy and use Prism on Android phones than TrustZone-based secure UI schemes, because the apps are not admitted to the Secure World and retain their full rights to manage and control their own interfaces. We have implemented …

Advancing Real-World Implementation Of The Well Optimized Linear Finder (Wolf) High-Speed Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Method, Timothy Evan Coon Aug 2025

Advancing Real-World Implementation Of The Well Optimized Linear Finder (Wolf) High-Speed Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation Method, Timothy Evan Coon

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation advances the real-world implementation of the Well Optimized Linear Finder (WOLF) method for high-speed Atmospheric Turbulence Compensation (ATC). Atmospheric turbulence introduces phase aberrations into optical wavefronts and degrades image quality in terrestrial imaging systems. Traditional phase diversity methods are computationally intensive and poorly suited to real-time operation. The WOLF method addresses these limitations through a novel, point-wise formulation of the optical transfer function (OTF) as a structured autocorrelation of the generalized pupil function (GPF). This formulation enables the estimation of phase aberrations at individual spatial coordinates with distributed computational complexity.

The research begins by developing a MATLAB-based simulation …

Islamism And Women’S Movements In Iran: Hijab As A Burden Of Representation, Samah Ahmed Aug 2025

Islamism And Women’S Movements In Iran: Hijab As A Burden Of Representation, Samah Ahmed

International Studies (MA) Theses

Throughout history, Islamic discourse, political Islam, and the status of Muslim women have been subjects of study. Still, few research efforts have concentrated on the changes and dynamics between Islamic discourse and feminist resistance. Particularly in Iran, attention has primarily been given to the Islamism project, often treated as separate from social movements in post-Islamism. This thesis explores how social movements have used the symbolism of the veil in their resistance, focusing specifically on the women's social movement during the Islamic Revolution. Drawing on Assef Bayat's approach of Islamism and social movements and Gender and power dynamics theory, the main …

Misinformation, Disinformation, And The Erosion Of Institutional Trust: The Role Of Social Media In Democracy, Andres Murillo

International Studies (MA) Theses

In recent years, social media-driven misinformation and disinformation have helped erode public trust in democratic institutions. This thesis examines how constant exposure to false online content correlates with declining confidence in democracy and evaluates the roles of platforms, influencers, and mechanisms. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, this thesis pairs a quantitative survey with a qualitative analysis of three disinformation case studies: the 2020 U.S. election and the “Stop the Steal” movement, the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar crisis, and Russian denial of wartime atrocities in their invasion against Ukraine. Drawing on classical and modern propaganda theories (Lasswell, Herman & Chomsky, RAND’s …

The Collapse Of Negara Hukum: How Indonesia’S Rule Of Law Has Been Shaped By Embedded Oligarch Politics?, Herlambang Perdana Wiratraman

The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies

This article argues recent performance of the rule of law in the 25-years period after Soeharto’s authoritarian regime. Why has there been a weakening of civil liberties, while on the other hand the oligarchic power and authoritarianism strengthens the current Indonesia’s politics. This article examines the prevalence of arbitrary practices, not only in the fair procedural process of law enforcement, but also why it is so easy to pass anti-democratic laws that contradict the principles of the rule of law. By referring to three specific case studies: free expression, academic freedom and press freedom, this article found that politics in …

The Role Of Nicotine In Treating Neurodegenerative Diseases, Jacquelyn T. Deaton Aug 2025

The Role Of Nicotine In Treating Neurodegenerative Diseases, Jacquelyn T. Deaton

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Neurodegenerative diseases have emerged as a critical medical challenge because they cause progressive neuronal death alongside structural or functional deterioration. Families, healthcare institutions, and affected individuals face significant challenges due to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's diseases, which impair both cognitive function and motor abilities. Researchers have found that nicotine in tobacco products is a compound with therapeutic potential. This literature review explores how nicotine interacts with neurodegenerative mechanisms, such as oxidative stress and inflammation, and assesses its potential neuroprotective effects in conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. In the central nervous system, nicotine binds to the …

A Qualitative Interpretative Meta-Analysis Of The Experiences Of Women Under Community Supervision, Gifty Kinful Aug 2025

A Qualitative Interpretative Meta-Analysis Of The Experiences Of Women Under Community Supervision, Gifty Kinful

Research Papers

Research reveals that women parolees or probationers encounter both challenges and support systems as they navigate their reintegration into the community. More specifically, most women returning from prison and those on probation are released into a society of stigma where access to housing, employment, education, transportation, and healthcare services is either severely limited or nonexistent. These serious obstacles can undermine their ability, motivation, and desire to succeed while on probation or parole. Support systems may be more or less available and effective. The qualitative literature on women under community supervision is large but to our knowledge, the diverse studies have …

Computational Frameworks To Unravel The Immune Landscape, Shan He Aug 2025

Computational Frameworks To Unravel The Immune Landscape, Shan He

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Recent advances in immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) and adoptive cell therapy, face challenges such as resistance and immune-related adverse events, partly due to our limited understanding of the immune signaling pathways. While high- throughput genomic data provide unprecedented resolution into these immune pathways, their full potential is limited by the lack of well-annotated, context-specific immune gene sets. To address this need, I developed a workflow to construct immune gene sets by integrating RNA- seq datasets and performing decomposition. Using this approach, I constructed 28 immune- specific gene sets from 83 bulk RNA-seq datasets and 12 Natural Killer (NK) …

Use Of The Protein Misfolding Cyclic Amplification For Food Safety And Drug Discovery, Maria R. Benavente Garcia-Huidobro Aug 2025

Use Of The Protein Misfolding Cyclic Amplification For Food Safety And Drug Discovery, Maria R. Benavente Garcia-Huidobro

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders caused by the misfolding of the normal prion protein (PrPC) into its infectious form (PrPSc). While the zoonotic potential of chronic wasting disease (CWD) remains uncertain, the presence of prions in food products raises public health concerns. Additionally, therapeutic strategies for prion diseases remain limited. This thesis presents a methodological exploration of the Protein Misfolding Cyclic Amplification (PMCA) technique to address these challenges in two key areas: (1) detecting CWD prions in processed meats subjected to common cooking procedures, and (2) identifying potential anti-prion compounds through a high-throughput PMCA adaptation. …

Predicting Genetic Interactions Using Functional Interaction Networks, Iulia Veronica Gheorghe Aug 2025

Predicting Genetic Interactions Using Functional Interaction Networks, Iulia Veronica Gheorghe

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Mapping genetic interactions is central to understanding cellular systems and identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities, particularly in the context of cancer. Among these interactions, synthetic lethality, where simultaneous loss of two genes is lethal but loss of either alone is tolerated, offers a powerful framework for selectively targeting tumor-specific dependencies. In model organisms like S. cerevisiae, comprehensive double-knockout screens have revealed detailed genetic interaction maps, enabling systems-level insights into pathway structure, gene function, and cellular organization. Replicating this achievement in human cells, however, is complicated by the scale and complexity of the human genome. Recent advances in genome-wide CRISPR knockout screening have …

STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONAL INVESTIGATION OF HAP40

Amanda Marie Solbach

Dissertation Advisor: Sheng Zhang, Ph.D.

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat in the Huntingtin (HTT) gene, resulting in a mutant huntingtin (mHTT) protein with an elongated polyglutamine tract. While the genetic basis of HD is well established, the mechanisms underlying mHTT toxicity and its impact on cellular function remain incompletely understood. Recent discoveries implicate Huntingtin-associated protein 40 (HAP40) as a critical regulator of HTT stability and intracellular function. However, the physiological and pathological significance of this interaction has not been fully explored.

Investigating The Role Of The Lysine-Specific Demethylase 4c In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mennatallah Shaheen Aug 2025

Investigating The Role Of The Lysine-Specific Demethylase 4c In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mennatallah Shaheen

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Deregulation of proteins involved in chromatin regulation is common in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Lysine demethylase 4C (KDM4C) is one of the chromatin modifying proteins frequently overexpressed across multiple solid cancers and is linked to chromatin instability, increased cell proliferation, and enhanced stem cell-like behavior. We observed upregulation of KDM4C protein in a panel of human PDAC cell lines and patient samples compared to non-neoplastic controls. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated deletion of KDM4C in human and murine PDAC cells reduced proliferation, clonogenicity, and increased survival of orthotopically implanted murine PDAC allografts. Transcriptomic and proteomics analyses revealed that loss of KDM4C in both human …

Studies Of The Mechanisms Of Reverse Signaling By Cd40l, Barbara M. Nassif Rausseo Aug 2025

Studies Of The Mechanisms Of Reverse Signaling By Cd40l, Barbara M. Nassif Rausseo

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

CD40 ligand (CD40L) is a transmembrane protein expressed on activated CD4 T cells, traditionally known for its role in forward signaling by engaging CD40 on antigen- presenting cells to promote immune activation. While this pathway is well characterized, there is evidence that CD40L also mediates reverse signaling, acting as a signaling receptor on T cells which enhances T cell function. However, the extent, consequences, and mechanism of CD40L-mediated reverse signaling in CD4 T cells remain poorly defined. This dissertation investigates the mechanisms and effects of CD40L reverse signaling on T cell function using both primary human T cells and the …

Microbial Metabolite Regulation Of Microglial Ahr Signaling In Alzheimer’S Disease, Ghalya E. Alrousan Aug 2025

Microbial Metabolite Regulation Of Microglial Ahr Signaling In Alzheimer’S Disease, Ghalya E. Alrousan

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by amyloid-β plaque accumulation, neuroinflammation, and cognitive decline. Recent evidence suggests that systemic factors, particularly the gut microbiota and its metabolites, play a significant role in shaping brain immune responses, including microglial activation. However, the mechanisms linking gut dysbiosis to microglial dysfunction in AD are poorly understood. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), a ligand-activated transcription factor responsive to tryptophan metabolites, has recently gained attention as a key regulator of neuroinflammation and microglial function. I hypothesize that the loss of beneficial microbial AHR ligands, specifically indole derivatives, during aging and AD …

The Effects Of A Tier 2 Intervention On The Behavior Of Elementary School Students Participating In Second Step: Enhancing A Schoolwide Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum, Charlotte Annalee Kennington

Theses and Dissertations

After reviewing the current research literature on the effects of social-emotional learning (SEL) on the behavior of elementary-age children, it was clear that there was limited research data on the effects of Tier 2 interventions designed to augment the effects of schoolwide SEL programs. Specifically, to what extent could a brief, group-delivered intervention improve the academic engagement, problem behavior, and socially appropriate comments of fifth-grade students receiving schoolwide SEL through Second Step in a traditional public school? Three fifth-grade students were recruited to participate in this study who all engaged in frequent problem behavior during Second Step lessons and throughout …
