Book Review: The Military Legacy Of Alexander The Great: Lessons For The Information Age, Jason W. Warren Phd

Parameters Bookshelf – Online Book Reviews

Author: Michael P. Ferguson and Ian Worthington

Reviewed by Jason W. Warren, PhD

The Military Legacy of Alexander the Great: Lessons for the Information Age focuses on three themes—inspirational physical presence, Alexander’s army’s professionalism, and the speed with which he campaigned. The reviewer notes there are many useful observations, overall, he sees the book as a “mixed bag.” For those newer to studies “on Alexander or lessons-learned methodology, Legacy may prove a useful primer.”

The Impact Of Climate Entrepreneurship Education In Higher Education Institutions: A University-Wide Climate Entrepreneurship Programme, Deirdre Mcquillan, Sylvia Gavigan Sep 2025

The Impact Of Climate Entrepreneurship Education In Higher Education Institutions: A University-Wide Climate Entrepreneurship Programme, Deirdre Mcquillan, Sylvia Gavigan

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Scholars are grappling with what educational and pedagogical approaches are needed to create sustainable entrepreneurs able to cope with sustainability challenges. This paper explores the impact of a student-focused climate entrepreneurship education initiative (CEE) in Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). The paper draws on models and frameworks in the literature that integrate programme objectives and pedagogical methods with impact. The paper addresses two key questions. Firstly, how are students impacted by CEE in terms of the affectedness, skills development and the intention to start a climate enterprise. The second question asks how different types of interventions in CEE influence student …

Ai-Enabled Autonomous Weapons And Human Control: Part I: Human Control And Machine Learning Design And Development, Lena Trabucco Sep 2025

Ai-Enabled Autonomous Weapons And Human Control: Part I: Human Control And Machine Learning Design And Development, Lena Trabucco

International Law Studies

At the center of the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous weapon systems (AWS) is the challenge of human control. AI has the potential to reshape the boundaries of military capabilities. In particular, the increasing sophistication of AWS necessitates a deep examination of the balance between machine autonomy and the role and requirements of human decision-makers. In pursuit of this balance, the concept of meaningful human control emerged. It is a concept born of necessity and offers a platform to reexamine and redefine the scope of human involvement in critical and time-sensitive decision-making. MHC has become a defining feature …

The Impact Of Communication And Job Satisfaction On Registered Nurse Turnover, Kingsley Kenechukwu Onyeama Sep 2025

The Impact Of Communication And Job Satisfaction On Registered Nurse Turnover, Kingsley Kenechukwu Onyeama

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Health care leaders are challenged with ongoing nursing shortages. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the impact of communication and job satisfaction on registered nurses’ turnover intentions. The conceptual framework integrated Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg and Mausner’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory, and Social Exchange Theory. Two research questions guided the study: the relationship between communication variables and intent to leave a healthcare organization, and the relationship between job satisfaction and intent to leave. A randomized sample of 156 registered nurses in California, aged 23 to 65 and identified through the California Nurses Database, was recruited via SurveyMonkey. …

Perspectives On Mathematical Modeling Education: Conceptions And Research, Geena Taite, Joseph Dinapoli Sep 2025

Perspectives On Mathematical Modeling Education: Conceptions And Research, Geena Taite, Joseph Dinapoli

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Mathematical modeling is a cyclical process in which mathematics is used to represent, explore, and better understand real-world situations by mathematizing a problem and validating the results. Unlike traditional word problems, modeling tasks require learners to make assumptions, define quantities, apply mathematics, interpret results, and revise solutions within authentic contexts. Mathematical modeling is increasingly recognized as essential in mathematics education, highlighted in standards such as the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics through mathematical practice 4 (MP4): model with mathematics. This entry explores the evolving landscape of mathematical modeling education. First, it reviews the diverse conceptions of modeling and the …

Human Adipose Stem Cell-Derived Small Extracellular Vesicles Modulate Glial Cell Response In Aged And Young Tbi Mouse Models, Salma S. Abdelmaboud Sep 2025

Human Adipose Stem Cell-Derived Small Extracellular Vesicles Modulate Glial Cell Response In Aged And Young Tbi Mouse Models, Salma S. Abdelmaboud

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of long-term neurological impairment, with aging significantly increasing vulnerability and worsening outcomes. Older individuals experience greater cognitive and motor deficits after TBI and often show diminished responses to therapeutic interventions. Both aging and TBI independently promote heightened neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction, increasing susceptibility to poor recovery. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) derived from human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) to promote neurological recovery and modulate neuroinflammation in a mouse model of TBI. Male C57BL/6 mice aged 3, 15, and 20 months underwent controlled cortical impact (CCI) and …

Interview With A Film Professor, Jacey Terrill

What Happened Here

This is a transcript of an oral history with an associate professor of film, who was an assistant professor of film at the time of the protest at Cal Poly Humboldt. They had been teaching a class about social change through film and recalled letting their class out early, as the protest was just starting. The film professor realized later on the day of the protest how much more serious it had become, and signed up with other Art and Film Faculty to keep watch of the protesters to help them if police were to show up again. They emphasized …

Autistic individuals are disproportionately likely to experience suicidal thoughts, feelings, and actions. Addressing suicidality is also a high priority of autistic community members. The goal of this study was to understand broad influences on suicidality and suicide-prevention needs for the autistic community. Using a community-based participatory research approach, we conducted a reflective thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with 16 autistic adults, 8 family members, and 14 mental health providers. Themes summarizing influences on suicidality and suicide-prevention needs centered on three broad thematic concepts: (1) Pervasive negative societal attitudes and social experiences have a lasting impact on autistic people's feelings of …

Climate Change-Related Threats To Railroads: Implications For Threat, Hazard And Risk Assessment, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich Sep 2025

Climate Change-Related Threats To Railroads: Implications For Threat, Hazard And Risk Assessment, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Climate change has created new challenges for railroads around the world. The rail systems operate in open environments, subjecting them to increased heat, changing locations of heavy rains, developing sea level rise and storm surge, and a longer and stronger wildfire season. This research investigates how an updated threat and hazard identification and risk assessment (THIRA) can lead to the development of climate adaptation strategies that limit damage and disruption to the railroad enterprise. The THIRA analyzes which threats are of most concern in a specific rail segment, and which climate change adaptation strategies give a beneficial return on investment.

Optimizing Ai Strategies In E-Commerce Customer Service: An Agent-Based Simulation, Yali Zhang, Zhenbin Ding, Jun Sun, Xingfang Zhao, Xu Hu, Zhaojun Yang

Information Systems Faculty Publications

The growing integration of chatbots in e-commerce customer service presents opportunities and challenges for online retailers in shaping effective artificial intelligence (AI) strategies. This study evaluates human-only, AI-only, and human–AI collaboration strategies using an agent-based simulation model across varying levels of task complexity, service volume, and product margin. Results show that the AI-only strategy excels in low-volume, simple tasks due to its cost-effectiveness, while the human–AI collaboration strategy proves superior in managing high-volume or complex inquiries by scaling human involvement to meet demand. For high-margin products, this collaborative approach delivers the best service, whereas the AI-only strategy is optimal for …
