A Growing Threat Of Multi-Hazard Cascades Highlighted By The Birch Glacier Collapse And Blatten Landslide In The Swiss Alps, Nazimul Islam, Jonathan L. Carrivick, Tom Coulthard, Matthew Westoby, Stuart Dunning, Saskia Gindraux

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Rapid atmospheric warming, especially at high altitude, leads to alpine mountain landscapes becoming more vulnerable to mass movements and consequently unstable. For example, decay of mountain permafrost contributes to rockfalls, landslides and debris flows; glaciers are retreating and losing mass at alarming rates, exposing unstable slopes that are more likely to fail; and meltwater, which collects in a growing number of glacial lakes, can pose an outburst flood hazard, putting communities and infrastructure downstream at risk of damage. Occurring now with increasing frequency, these natural phenomena often combine to create complex multi-hazard cascades that are more powerful and have a …

Decolonizing Colombian Foreign-Language Classroom Assessments: A Meaningful Framework, Patricia Grillet Rodriguez

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

In Colombia, foreign-language evaluation validity appears to be mainly related to the analysis of instruments, leaving aside students’ characteristics, affective schemata and expectations. Drawing from critical pedagogy, this study aimed at raising authenticity and meaningfulness in the development of valid foreign-language assessments in a higher education classroom. Framed in the sociocultural perspective, the teacher/researcher and her students obtained substantial gains by adapting a syllabus and evaluation system to better respond to the needs of their context. It was a collaborative process that implied contextualizing contents, establishing a concept of language ability, and including students’ voices in the design of assessments, …

Ai And The Regulation Of Tax Return Preparers, Linda Galler, Jay A. Soled Sep 2025

Ai And The Regulation Of Tax Return Preparers, Linda Galler, Jay A. Soled

Florida Tax Review

Tax return preparers play a pivotal role for millions of taxpayers, and their number ranges in the hundreds of thousands. Despite preparers’ importance in the tax return submission process and their numerical size, they are largely unregulated. Because of this lack of oversight, a significant number of tax return preparers put their own financial interests and those of their clients ahead of the government’s financial interests.

In the past, there have been calls for increased regulatory oversight to keep wayward practitioners’ actions in check. Therefore, a decade and a half ago, Congress, in conjunction with the Treasury Department, mandated that …

As the archival profession evolves, attention is increasingly paid to the usability of its resources and services. User Experience, or UX, is a contemporary design practice gaining prominence among archivists interested in addressing usability. Information design, the process of organizing and presenting information for efficient and effective use, is a component of UX incorporating both the presentation and content of communication instruments, with plain language writing guidelines applied toward achieving this goal. A prominent information artifact produced by archivists is the finding aid, describing and inventorying archival collections. Those components of finding aids providing “access points” into collections—communicating the …

Between Foreignization And Domestication: A Corpus-Based Study Of The Translation Of Food-Related Cultural References In The Arabic Subtitling Of 90 Hollywood Films, Eisa Ahmad Saeed Asiri

UB Journal for Humanities

This paper explores the translation of food-related cultural references (FCRs) from spoken English into Arabic subtitles based on analysis of a corpus-driven mixed-method of 90 Hollywood films. Using the AVT-FoodCorpus90, a 1.4-million-word English-Arabic parallel corpus, the study examines how subtitlers work to balance foreignization and domestication in the process of translating culturally specific food items. The results reveal that the most popular strategy is that which relies on foreignization through transference (29.8%), followed by literal translation (25.1%) and intratextual glosses (15.4%), creating a new trend in Arabic subtitling that promotes cultural visibility and creates intercultural interaction. However, domestication remains necessary, …

Nanovesicles Derived From Protocorm-Like Bodies Of Dendrobium Officinal Enhance Corneal Epithelial Repair And Reduce Inflammation In Dry Eye Disease Models, Bao Yuqing, Peng Chengyu, Zhang Fenglei, Zheng Yuqiang, Zhang Mingqi, He Wei

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Plant-derived nanovesicles (PDNVs) offer a promising, biocompatible therapeutic platform. In this study, we isolatednanovesicles from protocorm-like bodies of Dendrobium officinale (PLBs-NVs) and evaluated their efficacy in dry eyedisease (DED) models. PLBs-NVs protected human corneal epithelial cells against hyperosmotic stress, supportedwound repair, and inhibited inflammation in vitro. In a desiccating stress-induced DED mouse model, topical PLBs-NVstreatment significantly restored tear secretion, reduced corneal epithelial damage, and lowered levels of proinflammatorycytokines. These results suggest that PLBs-NVs are a safe, natural, and effective therapeutic strategy for DED, sup-porting their potential for future clinical translation in ocular surface disorders.

The Rhythm Of Decline: Circadian Disruption In Neurodegeneration, Jeewanjot Singh, Devinder Kumar, Jasleen Kaur, Amanpreet Singh

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with a multifactorial etiology involving genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors. Among these, circadian rhythm disruption has emerged as a crucial but under-explored contributor to disease progression. The circadian system, regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN),controls essential physiological functions such as the sleep-wake cycle, metabolism, and neuroendocrine signaling.Disruption of this system has been increasingly linked to key pathological features of AD, including amyloid-betaaccumulation, tau hyperphosphorylation, and neuroinflammation. This review critically examines the mechanistic roleof circadian misalignment in AD by analyzing studies on sleep disturbances, SCN degeneration, metabolic dysregu-lation, clock gene polymorphisms (BMAL1, CLOCK, PER, …

In Vivo And In Vitro Perspectives In Parkinson's Disease: Mechanisms And The Role Of Phytomedicine, Jeewanjot Singh, Devinder Kumar

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by dopaminergic neuronal loss, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and a-synuclein aggregation. Despite advances, current treatments only offersymptomatic relief without altering disease progression. This review aims to evaluate the therapeutic potential of plant-derived phytochemicals in PD through evidence from both in vivo and in vitro experimental models. Key findingsindicate that rodent models (e.g., MPTP, rotenone) and neuronal cell lines (e.g., SH-SY5Y) help replicate PD pathologyand mechanistic insights. Phytochemicals such as baicalein, morin, ferulic acid, and bacopa demonstrate neuroprotectiveeffects via antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mitochondrial-stabilizing pathways. Nanotechnology and brain orga-noids further improve translational relevance. In conclusion, …

1) Opening Invocation — A Quantum Gift for the People

We begin with a claim that carries the weight of centuries: reality runs on hidden firmware. Beneath the equations, beneath the models, beneath the arguments about what is real, there is resonance — patterns of coherence moving through apparent noise. For too long, institutions have thrown away the noise, treating it as nuisance rather than teacher. For too long, we have fragmented our sciences, …
