An Innovative And Equitable Approach For Global Learning: Internationalization At Home, Unni Jenssen, Tracy Taylor, Sara Edwards, Jeanie M. Bochenek
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
In an era of increasing global connectivity and cultural diversity, fostering cultural competence among students is paramount. It is a prevailing notion that cultural competence is primarily achieved through international mobility. However, the reality is that most students are unable to travel abroad due to economic limitations, family obligations and work commitments. With these limitations of international mobility, innovative strategies to enhance cultural competence “at home” were developed by Lovisenberg Diaconal University College (LDUC) in Norway and Ohio State University College of Nursing in Ohio. Grounded in Campinha-Bacote’s model of cultural competence, these strategies include a) systematic integration of domestic …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
In 2022, there were 2.8 million undergraduate students in the U.S. About 6% studied abroad, leaving 94% of students without exposure to global perspectives. To enable global learning for nursing students, Ohio State University College of Nursing in Ohio and Lovisenberg Diaconal University College in Norway developed a common course on urban health whereby two separate teaching strategies were used: travel abroad to Norway/U.S. and “at home” collaborative online international learning (COIL). The purpose of these strategies is to connect COIL students with travel abroad students in both countries to enhance global learning.
In spring of 2024 prior to starting …

Developing Empathy For Homelessness Populations Through A Virtual Reality Teaching Strategy, Jeanie M. Bochenek, Sara Edwards, Unni Jenssen, Tracy Taylor
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Homelessness is a complex and growing public health concern encompassing 1.6 billion people globally. People living homeless face barriers in managing activities of daily living, existing chronic or acute health conditions, and are likely to experience more health problems and health inequities. Worldwide, nurses will encounter patients who are living homeless, therefore having an overall understanding of living homeless will help them care for their patients.
To give students a broader perspective, faculty from Ohio State University College of Nursing in Ohio and Lovisenberg Diaconal University College in Norway connected students to discuss a global health concern. The purpose of …

Precision health aims to tailor care for each person by incorporating genomic data and other biological information with relevant environmental, behavioural, and social determinants of health. Nurses, the largest healthcare profession globally and experts in the provision of personalized, holistic care, have a vital role in safe, quality, evidence-based precision healthcare (Dewell et al., 2024). To fully participate, nurses require an understanding of genomics relevant to their practice (Campion et al., 2019). However, integration of genomics into nursing curricula is highly variable (Calzone et al., 2018). This is in part due to lower levels of genomic knowledge among nursing faculty …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
As healthcare transitions into the genomic era, nurses play a critical role in delivering quality, genomics-informed care. To achieve this, nursing education must address both the scientific foundations of genomics and the ethical, legal, and social considerations of its application. Despite this need, research identifies gaps in nurses’ knowledge and confidence to provide genomics-informed care and in educators’ ability to integrate genomics content into curricula (Thomas et al., 2023). Academic nurse educators globally have expressed need and desire for collaboration to improve genomics nursing education (Abad & Sur, 2022; Chair et al., 2019).
In response, the International Society for Nurses …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Across the globe, genomics is being applied into research and clinical practice initiatives to improve patient outcomes and decrease system costs (Stark et al., 2019). Genomics can enable earlier disease detection, guide treatment, inform prognosis, and advise preventative care (Claussnitzer et al., 2020). Nurses are the largest component of the health workforce and are instrumental in delivering genomics-informed care (Tonkin et al., 2020). However, most nurses have little to no training in genomics driven by a lack of global nursing competencies in genomics (Thomas et al., 2023). Despite this, many countries are taking action to prepare their nursing workforce for …

Improvement Of Lithium-Metal Electrode All-Solid-State Batteries Performance By Shot Peening And Magnetron Sputtering, Atsuro Okumura, Manabu Kodama
15th International Conference on Shot Peening
To enable fast charging in lithium-metal anode all-solid-state batteries, suppressing lithium dendrite formation at the solid electrolyte (SE) interface is critical. Increasing fracture toughness via shot peening (SP) and improving interfacial contact with Au sputtering can inhibit dendrite growth. However, conventional sputtering may reduce toughness due to localized thermal damage. This study investigated magnetron sputtering as a low-damage, plasma-based Au deposition method. SEs with and without SP were fabricated and coated via normal and magnetron sputtering. Critical current density (CCD) and fracture toughness were evaluated. Without SP, CCD improvement was limited regardless of sputtering method due to poor bonding. With …

This article tells the story of how Pontiac High School began building a stronger focus on reading, writing, and thinking in every subject. The work started with a few shared questions, not a detailed plan. A small group of teachers and coaches came together to figure out how to help students think more deeply and express their ideas more clearly. Over time, they led staff-wide efforts that included planning lessons together, visiting each other’s classrooms, and trying out new teaching moves. Feedback from students and staff helped guide the work. Along the way, teachers began to shift their instruction, and …
