Reducing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries In Critical Care Using A Preventing Pressure Ulcers Data Tool, Elizabeth Appiah-Caslin

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are preventable yet remain a significant source of patient harm, especially in high-acuity settings like the Neurocritical Care (NCC) unit. HAPIs increase morbidity, length of stay, and healthcare costs. Despite having a prevention bundle, the NCC unit exceeded national benchmarks due to inconsistent adherence, delayed consultations, and variable documentation. Addressing this issue supports the organization's goals for safety and quality, aligning with CMS and Joint Commission standards.

Aim of the Project: This 12-week quality improvement project aimed to reduce HAPI incidence in the NCC unit by implementing the AHRQ Preventing Pressure Ulcers Data Tool. The …

Enhancing Nursing Documentation Accuracy For Female External Urinary Collection Devices Through Structured Documentation Huddles, Tiffany Ealy

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Accurate documentation of female external urinary collection devices (EUCDs), such as the PureWick, is crucial for maintaining continuity of care and ensuring efficient resource utilization. However, inconsistent nursing documentation practices have led to gaps in regulatory compliance and communication among healthcare teams. Baseline data revealed frequent omissions and inaccuracies in female EUCD charting, indicating a significant practice gap that requires targeted improvement.

Aim of the Project: The purpose of the evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to improve nursing documentation accuracy for female EUCDs by implementing structured documentation huddles, thereby enhancing organizational compliance.

Eat, Sleep, Console Care For Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: A Multisite Evaluation, Amanda Fout

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Opioid use in pregnancy continues to rise, leading to increasing cases of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Traditional management with the Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring System (FNASS) often results in pharmacologic treatment, prolonged hospitalizations, and higher costs. Inconsistent FNASS scoring at the hospital system contributed to unnecessary NICU admissions and variable outcomes. Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) was introduced as an alternative approach, but its effectiveness had not been formally evaluated.

Aim of the Project: The aim of the quality improvement initiative was to evaluate the effectiveness of the ESC model in improving outcomes for infants with NAS across three hospitals …

Implementing A Sepsis Questionnaire To Reduce Readmissions…A Health Plan’S Experience, Vernita L. Kelley

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition with high readmission risk, threatening patient recovery and survival. In the managed care organization (MCO) where this DNP project was implemented, sepsis ranks among the top five readmission diagnoses. The organization's 30-day readmission rate of 15.5% is substantially higher than the benchmark of 9.29%, highlighting a clinical quality issue, a strain on patient outcomes, and a strain on healthcare resources.

Aim of the Project: This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to reduce sepsis readmissions by embedding a sepsis questionnaire into case management workflows to identify clinical risks and social determinants of health, improve transitions, …

Quality Improvement Initative To Reduce Falls Among Geriatric Patients In The Inpatient Mental Health Setting, Regina Johnson

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Falls are widely recognized as a leading cause of injury and hospitalization among older adults, with geriatric psychiatric patients at particularly high risk due to polypharmacy, cognitive impairment, and mobility challenges. At the project site, baseline audits revealed inconsistent use of structured fall risk tools, limited nurse-driven medication review, and gaps in post-fall documentation. The absence of an embedded electronic health record feature for medication review highlighted a significant practice gap requiring intervention.

Aim of the Project: The aim of this quality improvement (QI) project was to reduce fall risk in a geriatric psychiatric hospital through structured post-fall medication …

Fall Reduction Utilizing Fall Tailored Intervention For Patient Safety In Acute Care, Lauren Poindexter

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Hospitalized patient falls cause physical, psychological, and financial harm and persist despite prevention bundles. A Midwest Ohio acute medical unit experienced higher-than-benchmark fall rates (1.53–7.58 falls/1,000 patient days; unit rate 113% of the national median), with a rising trend in FY25. Reliance on the Schmid tool and existing interventions lacked structured patient/family engagement, as well as comprehensive medication assessment, leading to under-recognition of risk and limited nurse-driven prevention.

Aim of the Project: The aim of the project was to reduce inpatient fall rates and fall-related injuries on a medical unit by implementing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality …

Implementing Pain Reassessment Workflow To Improve Timely Pain Management In Hospice Patients: A Quality Improvement Project, Oluremi Omodara

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Timely pain reassessment is a vital component of hospice care, directly influencing the quality of life for patients. Despite the high prevalence of pain, which affects 55% of hospice patients due to disease progression or adverse drug reactions, only 51% of those reporting moderate to severe pain at admission receive a documented reassessment. The gap highlights an organizational issue in pain management stemming from the absence of a clearly defined period and workflow for reassessment.

Aim of the Project: The aim of the quality improvement (QI) project was to improve compliance with pain reassessment documentation within 48 hours …

Improving Patient Portal Messaging Workflow, Tanya M. Fitzpatrick Oct 2025

Improving Patient Portal Messaging Workflow, Tanya M. Fitzpatrick

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Inefficiencies in patient portal secure messaging between providers and patients in a large primary care practice led to delayed resolution times, averaging 5.6 days per message. Most messages were closed by physicians or advanced practice providers, resulting in imbalanced workload distribution, increased provider burden, and reduced communication efficiency. The lack of standardized guidelines for message use, character limits, or triage processes contributed to workflow disruptions, a diminished patient experience, and unreimbursed provider time.

Aim of the Project: The aim of the project was to reduce average portal message closure times by at least 38% through the implementation of standardized …

Fall Prevention In Home Care: The Introduction Of The Steadi Initiative As Evidence-Based Tool, Margarida Barbosa - Barreiro

All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects

Problem: Falls continue to be one of the leading causes of injury and mortality among older adults and remain a significant driver of healthcare utilization and cost. Within the home health setting, inconsistent practices in fall risk assessment and intervention have contributed to care gaps and increased patient vulnerability. The absence of a standardized, evidence-based process created the need for a structured quality improvement initiative to strengthen patient safety.

Aim of the Project: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to integrate the CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) toolkit into home health visits to enhance the …

Precipitated By The Pandemic: From Remote Witnessing To Electronic Wills, Edward Ti, Hang Wu Tang Oct 2025

Precipitated By The Pandemic: From Remote Witnessing To Electronic Wills, Edward Ti, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the rigidity of will-making laws requiring in-person witnessing. Jurisdictions responded differently: some introduced temporary measures, others implemented permanent reforms allowing remote witnessing. This article compares responses in England and Wales, selected Australian states, Singapore, and Hong Kong SAR, tracing developments toward potential recognition of electronic wills. The central argument is that law reform should balance accessibility with safeguards against fraud and undue influence, avoiding overly burdensome formalities that deter compliance. The article concludes by examining how national digital identity systems could be used for the execution of electronic wills.

Glimpses Of Joy In The Beginning Of The Lucan Gospel: A Narrative-Critical Reading Of Lk 1:5-2:52, Jieqi Huang Oct 2025

Glimpses Of Joy In The Beginning Of The Lucan Gospel: A Narrative-Critical Reading Of Lk 1:5-2:52, Jieqi Huang

Loyola Papers

This paper explores the theme of joy in Luke 1:5–25 through a narrative-critical approach, focusing on how Luke presents joy as a theological motif grounded in God’s redemptive initiative. By analyzing the chiastic structure and literary techniques of the passage, the paper highlights how the interplay of story and discourse conveys profound theological meaning. Through extensive intertextual allusions, particularly to the Old Testament, Luke frames this episode in Luke as both a continuation and fulfillment of Israel’s salvation history. Ultimately, the paper argues that Luke’s narrative invites readers to encounter a faithful God who brings joy in unexpected ways and …

Paraconsistent Logic And The Metaphysics Of The Incarnation: A Defense Of Jc Beall’S Contradictory Christology, Vincent Ray M. Daut Oct 2025

Paraconsistent Logic And The Metaphysics Of The Incarnation: A Defense Of Jc Beall’S Contradictory Christology, Vincent Ray M. Daut

Loyola Papers

This article explores the application of paraconsistent logic to one of theology’s enduring challenges: the metaphysics of the Incarnation. The claim that Christ is both fully human and fully divine, as defined by the Council of Chalcedon, presents a significant ontological dilemma, as these two natures are inherently incompatible and mutually exclusive according to classical logic: on the one hand, human nature is defined by finitude, mutability, and moral fallibility, and divine nature is understood as infinite, immutable, and morally impeccable, on the other. Drawing on Jc Beall’s contradictory Christology, this article argues that paraconsistent logic provides a coherent framework …

St. John Paul Ii On Obedience And Its Spirituality In Religious And Consecrated Life, Paul Nguyen Van Hoa Oct 2025

St. John Paul Ii On Obedience And Its Spirituality In Religious And Consecrated Life, Paul Nguyen Van Hoa

Loyola Papers

This paper examines the theological and spiritual meaning of the vow of obedience in religious life through the teachings of Pope John Paul II. It presents obedience as Christ-centered, Trinitarian, ecclesial, and pneumatological—understood as a free and loving response modeled on Christ. Reframed as dialogue grounded in listening, discernment, and mutual trust, obedience is shown to foster authentic freedom and communion. By integrating theology with lived religious practice, the study highlights obedience as a liberating, relational, and Spirit-led path that deepens personal dignity, communal fidelity, and mission.

Ready For A Theology Of The Mind? Faith Response To The Mental Health Crisis, Ramil R. Marcos, Phil Nielsen G. Galvez Oct 2025

Ready For A Theology Of The Mind? Faith Response To The Mental Health Crisis, Ramil R. Marcos, Phil Nielsen G. Galvez

Loyola Papers

This article argues for the urgent development of a “theology of the mind” as a pastoral and theological response to the growing mental health crisis in the Philippines. This timely study highlights the systemic problems surrounding this important concern, such as limited access to professional help, cultural stigma, poverty, and inadequate government facilities. The paper draws from Scripture, Church teaching, papal pronouncements, and local initiatives to show that mental health struggles are not alien to Christian life but resonate deeply with biblical figures, the life of Christ, and the Church’s mission of compassion. Among its unique contributions is the proposal …

Exploring Positive Psychology And Goal Setting In Esports Coaching: A Thematic Analysis Of Professional Fortnite Coaches, Samuel Jaffe, Nigel Jackson, Jonathan Rhodes Oct 2025

Exploring Positive Psychology And Goal Setting In Esports Coaching: A Thematic Analysis Of Professional Fortnite Coaches, Samuel Jaffe, Nigel Jackson, Jonathan Rhodes

School of Psychology

This study investigates how professional Fortnite coaches integrate positive psychology, specifically Seligman’s PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) model and goal-setting frameworks, to enhance player performance and well-being. Through semistructured interviews with 16 esports coaches, the research examines how psychological strategies influence motivation, resilience, and long-term success in a highly competitive, digital coaching environment. Using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis, three key themes were constructed: defining and measuring success, goal-setting practices, and balancing positive versus pressured coaching styles. Coaches defined success beyond tournament outcomes, emphasizing player development, consistency, and psychological resilience. Goal-setting strategies were highly individualized, blending …

“He’S Here, He’S Not Queer”: The Indexical Potential Of Pronoun Use On American Drag Reality Television, Finn Verdonk , '26 Oct 2025

“He’S Here, He’S Not Queer”: The Indexical Potential Of Pronoun Use On American Drag Reality Television, Finn Verdonk , '26

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

When English speakers talk about drag performers, what factors impact the pronoun that is used? Pulling data from two seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race (Season 4 and Season 14) and one season of Dragula (Season 5), this thesis attempts to understand the ways in which drag performers use pronouns in discourse about fellow drag performers. Building from Myers’s 2018 proposal that using he/him pronouns for drag queens can index shadiness or criticism, I expand her sample to see if her findings hold up over time and across franchises. I find that he/him pronouns on RPDR no longer index shadiness and …

Minority Farmer And Rancher Delinquency And Local Cultural Climate: Evidence From Farm Service Agency's County Office Committees, Lawson Connor, Bruce L. Ahrendsen, Charles B. Dodson, Logan Moss Oct 2025

Minority Farmer And Rancher Delinquency And Local Cultural Climate: Evidence From Farm Service Agency's County Office Committees, Lawson Connor, Bruce L. Ahrendsen, Charles B. Dodson, Logan Moss

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Farm delinquency is linked to many negative indicators of farm survival, including increased risk of bankruptcy and farm failure. Minority farmers and ranchers (MFR) have been found to exhibit higher rates of delinquency on U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) loans compared to their non-Hispanic White male counterparts. These findings persist even after accounting for economic/financial factors expected to predict loan repayment performance. In this study, to further explore the existing discrepancy between loan default rates for MFR and White, non-Hispanic borrowers, we look more broadly than financial indicators and introduce MFR representation on the FSA County …

The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence, School Culture, And School Leadership, Virginia Lorean Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

This study was a qualitative instrumental single holistic case study as outlined by Robert Stake in

1995. It focused on three research questions. The goal was to gain perspectives from teachers

and a principal on teacher retention and the culture of a campus. The emotional level of the

principal was evaluated on social awareness, self-awareness, relationship management, and self-

management by the principal taking part in an emotional intelligence assessment. The single

holistic case study approach was used, which had six phases of analyzing the data. The results

were then compared to the teachers’ interviews and surveys that were …

Beyond Democracy: How A Free Press Supports The Rule Of Law, Erin C. Carroll Oct 2025

Beyond Democracy: How A Free Press Supports The Rule Of Law, Erin C. Carroll

Cardozo Law Review

Widespread agreement has existed for centuries that a free press is essential to democracy. But legal scholars have spent almost no effort thinking about why else we might need a free press. This article attempts to widen the aperture. It argues that as the free press is essential to democracy, it is just as essential to a separate value: the rule of law. Recognizing and investigating the connections between the free press and the rule of law is essential right now. It can help us discern how the press can create friction against the erosion of both rule of law …

Analysis Of The Prevalence Of Dissociative Identity Disorder Using Neutrosophic Plithogenic Statistics, Verónica Elizabeth Saltos Paz, Tanya Elizabeth Borja Pante, Gloria Madaly Plasencia Álvarez, Milena Rodríguez Salcedo Oct 2025

Analysis Of The Prevalence Of Dissociative Identity Disorder Using Neutrosophic Plithogenic Statistics, Verónica Elizabeth Saltos Paz, Tanya Elizabeth Borja Pante, Gloria Madaly Plasencia Álvarez, Milena Rodríguez Salcedo

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is one of the most enigmatic, intricate issues of contemporary psychiatry. It is challenging to assess how prevalent it is and what diagnosis means because dissociative identity disorder is a complicated disorder that manifests differently across populations. Yet when the disorder can be analyzed with statistically significant results from solid populations, critical advances in disorder awareness, treatment, and quality of life for those with IDD exist. Yet the literature does not provide such a statistical approach that will process uncertainty and vagueness based upon clinical observation of persons with DID. Therefore, this research attempts to apply …

Evaluating Community Satisfaction With Cultural Educational Projects Through Neutrosophic Plithogenic Iadov, Claudia Yadira Cuenca Macas, Jack Franck Jaramillo Herrera, Isaac Roger Martinez, Rudy Garcia Cobas, Nayade Caridad Reyes Palau

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This study addresses the gap of assessing the Kawymeno indigenous community's satisfaction with an interdisciplinary teaching project which was designed to enhance cultural identity for these children at risk of cultural loss due to other identity-possessing persons' facilitation. Preservation of cultural identity is important because with indigenous people and non-indigenous persons, for example, globalization might facilitate the loss of the ancestral tongue and age-old activities, thus, it's important to know whether such communities approve or not of such teaching endeavors. Relative to the international findings about intercultural education, very few studies exist that assess the phenomenon from a multicultural perspective …
