Unravelling The Nexus Between Corporate Governance And Sustainability Performance: Evidence From India, Malaya Ranjan Mohapatra, Chandra Sekhar Mishra Oct 2025

Unravelling The Nexus Between Corporate Governance And Sustainability Performance: Evidence From India, Malaya Ranjan Mohapatra, Chandra Sekhar Mishra

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This research investigates the influence of Corporate Governance (CG) practices on the Sustainability Performance (SP) of Indian non-financial firms. The study, utilizing a balanced panel of 1550 firm-year observations, demonstrates that overall corporate governance score and CEO duality improve sustainability performance. However, the moderation effect indicates that the positive effect of CG practices on SP is compromised when the same person holds both CEO and chairperson positions in a firm. Additionally, the relationship between CG and SP varies based on ownership structure, i.e., group-affiliated and non-group affiliated firms, as well as different industrial sectors, i.e., manufacturing, service, and diversified sectors.

Independence Of Central Banks In Nondemocratic Regimes: Implications For Price Stability, Abeeb O. Olaniran, Umar B. Ndako Oct 2025

Independence Of Central Banks In Nondemocratic Regimes: Implications For Price Stability, Abeeb O. Olaniran, Umar B. Ndako

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This study examines the impact of central bank independence on inflation in nondemocratic regimes, with a specific focus on the differences between Islamic and nonIslamic groups. It utilizes nonstationary heterogeneous panels to estimate both the longrun and short-run responses of inflation to central bank independence. Additionally, it employs a panel smooth transition regression model to identify any potential threshold effects in this relationship. Our findings reveal an inverse relationship between central bank independence and inflation rates for both groups in the long run. Our result suggests that non-Islamic authoritarian countries may struggle more than Islamic ones to maintain price stability …

Synthetically Expressive: Evaluating Gesture And Voice For Emotion And Empathy In Vr And 2d Scenarios, Haoyang Du, Kiran Chhatre, Christopher Peters, Brian Keegan, Rachel Mcdonnell, Cathy Ennis

Conference papers

The creation of virtual humans increasingly leverages automated synthesis of speech and gestures, enabling expressive, adaptable agents that effectively engage users. However, the independent development of voice and gesture generation technologies, alongside the growing popularity of virtual reality (VR), presents significant questions about the integration of these signals and their ability to convey emotional detail in immersive environments. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of real and synthetic gestures and speech, alongside varying levels of immersion (VR vs. 2D displays) and emotional contexts (positive, neutral, negative) on user perceptions. We investigate how immersion affects the perceived match between gestures …

Failure To Rescue After Surgery For Pancreatic Cancer: A Systematic Review And Narrative Synthesis Of Risk Factors And Safety Strategies, Masashi Uramatsu, Yoshikazu Fujisawa, Paul Barach, Hiroaki Osakabe, Moe Matsumoto, Yuichi Nagakawa Oct 2025

Failure To Rescue After Surgery For Pancreatic Cancer: A Systematic Review And Narrative Synthesis Of Risk Factors And Safety Strategies, Masashi Uramatsu, Yoshikazu Fujisawa, Paul Barach, Hiroaki Osakabe, Moe Matsumoto, Yuichi Nagakawa

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Background: Failure to rescue (FTR), defined as death after major postoperative complications, is a critical quality indicator in pancreatic cancer surgery. Despite advances in surgical techniques and perioperative care, FTR rates remain high and vary across institutions. Methods: This systematic review uses a narrative synthesis followed by PRISMA 2020. A PubMed search (1992-2025) identified 83 studies; after screening, 52 studies (2010-2025) were included. Eligible designs were registry-based, multicenter, single-center, or prospective audits. Given substantial heterogeneity in study designs, FTR definitions, and outcome measures, a narrative synthesis was performed; no formal risk-of-bias assessment or meta-analysis was conducted. Results: …

Introductory Chemistry Student Success: Investigating Study Strategies And Evaluating An Informative Utility Value Intervention, Pallavi Nayyar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Improving retention in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programs is essential to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the domestic workforce. To achieve this, it is critical to understand and address the factors that influence student persistence in STEM degrees. Gateway courses such as general chemistry often serve as early barriers to STEM degree completion, with high rates of attrition that impact not only individual students but also institutions and society. Therefore, the aim of this work was to examine and influence the factors that contribute to student withdrawal from introductory chemistry courses in order to promote …

Experimental Warming Alters Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In A Humid Tropical Forest, Parker M. Bartz, Iana F. Grullón-Penkova, Molly A. Cavaleri, Sasha C. Reed, Saima Shahid, Tana E. Wood, Et. Al. Oct 2025

Experimental Warming Alters Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In A Humid Tropical Forest, Parker M. Bartz, Iana F. Grullón-Penkova, Molly A. Cavaleri, Sasha C. Reed, Saima Shahid, Tana E. Wood, Et. Al.

Michigan Tech Publications

Microbial nitrogen (N) fixation accounts for c. 97% of natural N inputs to terrestrial ecosystems. These microbes can be free-living in the soil and leaf litter (asymbiotic) or in symbiosis with plants. Warming is expected to increase N-fixation rates because warmer temperatures favor the growth and activity of N-fixing microbes.
We investigated the effects of warming on asymbiotic components of N fixation at a field warming experiment in Puerto Rico. We analyzed the function and composition of bacterial communities from surface soil and leaf litter samples.
Warming significantly increased asymbiotic N-fixation rates in soil by 55% (to 0.002 kg …

Background: Interoperability is fundamental for advancing digital health and digital therapeutics, particularly with the integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and federated learning. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where digital infrastructure remains fragmented, face specific challenges in implementing standardized and scalable systems. Methods: This scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O’Malley framework, refined by Levac et al., and the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Google Scholar) were searched for peer-reviewed English language studies published between 2015 and 2025. We identified 255 potentially eligible articles and selected …

Teaching Inquiry: A Guiding Template Fosters Critical Thinking, Barbara D. O'Donnell, Abigail C. Schwent Oct 2025

Teaching Inquiry: A Guiding Template Fosters Critical Thinking, Barbara D. O'Donnell, Abigail C. Schwent

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

This article provides a supportive way to address the marginalization of social studies by teaching inquiry through the use of a template. Inquiry based learning encourages students to make real-world connections by engaging in problem solving and exploration through research. It fosters higher level skills like critical thinking, evaluation, and synthesis of knowledge through experiential learning (Bell, Urhahne, Schanze and Ploetzner 2009). Using inquiry to investigate social studies topics encourages the use of sources from diverse perspectives to understand the complete picture of the event being researched. Teaching social studies through inquiry is a daunting task due to multiple obstacles …

Navigating “Divisive” Issues In Social Studies Education: Practical Guidance For Teachers, Taylor M. Kessner, Sarah J. Kaka, Anthony Tuf Francis, Katrina Kennett Oct 2025

Navigating “Divisive” Issues In Social Studies Education: Practical Guidance For Teachers, Taylor M. Kessner, Sarah J. Kaka, Anthony Tuf Francis, Katrina Kennett

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Social studies classrooms and curricula have long been localized battlegrounds of broader cultural and political conflicts (Nash et al., 2000). These proxy conflicts—about what counts as history and whose history is taught to whom and why—have more recently evolved from brushfire conflicts to full-scale hot wars as local and state governmental actors have become more involved. Several state legislatures have introduced restrictions on teaching race, gender, and identity and increased demands for transparency in instructional content. More recently, in a 2024 executive order, President Donald Trump issued an executive order prohibiting governmental support for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice efforts. …
