Cardiac Sr-Mitochondria Contacts-Impact On Cardiac Physiology And Mitochondrial Fitness, Celia Fernandez-Sanz, Shey-Shing Sheu, Sergio De La Fuente

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

In adult cardiomyocytes, within the Mitochondrial Associated Membranes (MAMs), the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and mitochondria juxtapose each other, forming a unique and highly repetitive functional structure throughout the cells. These SR-mitochondria contact sites have emerged as critical structures that regulate various physiological processes, including lipid exchange, calcium (Ca2+) communication, control of excitation-contraction bioenergetics coupling, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Over the years, several scientific studies have reported the accumulation of diverse proteins within these SR-mitochondria close contacts. Some proteins strategically accumulate in these areas to enhance their function, such as the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter, while others …

Amazon.Com And The Nlrb: Privacy Rights, Home Visits And Beyond, Leonard Bierman, Rafael Gely

Texas A&M Law Review

In the important November 2024 case of Amazon.com Services LLC, the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB” or “Board”) held employer “captive audience speeches” to be per se unlawful. The NLRB held that employer anti-union speeches of this kind, delivered on paid company time on company premises and which employees are required to attend, unlawfully intruded on employee privacy and autonomy. This Article critiques the NLRB’s recent Amazon.com decision from various perspectives. First, the NLRB, in its ruling, appears to ignore decades-long precedent in this area of the law, precedent that firmly upheld the “free speech” rights of employers to …

Reducing Moral Distress Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The Impact Of A Weekly Palliative Care And Neonatology Conference, Kirthi Devireddy, Riddhi Shukla, Rachel Boren, James E Slaven, Rebecca A Baker, Jayme D Allen, Karen M Moody

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Moral distress is the experience of knowing what ethically right action to take, but being unable to act accordingly, due to external factors. It is an experience common to providers working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where care for infants, often born at the edges of viability or with other life-limiting diagnoses, includes life and death medical decision-making in the context of uncertain prognoses. Palliative care, which aims to reduce suffering, can assist with staff moral distress by providing space for conversations regarding goals-of-care and end-of-life decision making.

Methods: The palliative care and NICU teams co-developed a …

Nitric oxide (NO) in the remote marine atmosphere is underestimated by chemistry-climate models. We explore the potential oceanic emissions of NO and its impacts using a global chemistry-climate model with a newly developed oceanic NO emission inventory, considering the abiotic photochemical production of NO in the seawater. The results are evaluated using global observations from the NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom). We propose that the photochemical production of NO from the photolysis of dissolved inorganic nitrite and nitrate in the surface seawater could lead to an oceanic NOx source of ∼3 Tg N per year, which could explain the missing …

Bridging Reason And Perception: Searching For The Arguments Of Ptolemaïs Of Cyrene In Works On Music Theory From The Italian Renaissance, Sean Robert Denby Nov 2025

Bridging Reason And Perception: Searching For The Arguments Of Ptolemaïs Of Cyrene In Works On Music Theory From The Italian Renaissance, Sean Robert Denby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Ptolemaïs of Cyrene is the earliest known female music theorist from antiquity. Her lost work, Pythagorean Elements of Music, is a substantive addition to the debate on the differences in approaches to reason and perception in harmonic science from Pythagorean and Aristoxenian doctrines. It only survives in three quotations in Porphyry of Tyre’s Commentary on Ptolemy’s Harmonics, a work known and used by humanists and music theorists alike in the Italian Renaissance. Considering that numerous individuals in Renaissance Italy—in particular, Franchino Gaffurio, Gioseffo Zarlino, and Vincenzo Galilei—had access to Porphyry’s Commentary, it is a mystery as to why she does …

‘In Texas, Everybody Wants Antibiotics’: Reducing Inappropriate Antibiotic Expectations And Use With A Provider-Patient Communication Tool In Primary Care, Ashley Collazo, Paige Wermuth, Johanan Luna Rodriguez, Kiara Olmeda, Azalia Mancera, Fabrizia Faustinella, Michael K Paasche-Orlow, Roger Zoorob, Barbara Wells Trautner, Larissa Grigoryan

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background/objective: Patients often expect antibiotics for self-limiting diseases, pressuring providers to prescribe antibiotics unnecessarily. These expectations also contribute to the unsafe practice of taking antibiotics without a prescription (non-prescription use), such as pills retained from prior prescriptions or antibiotics from non-medical sources. Previous work shows that non-prescription use is due to strong, widely held misconceptions regarding the curative power of antibiotics. To reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics, we developed and pilot-tested a patient-focused, bilingual (English and Spanish) educational tool with patient and provider stakeholder input. The tool, a trifold brochure, included information on safe antibiotic use, potential antibiotic harms and …

Microstrip patch antennas (MPAs) rely on precise impedance matching for efficient power transfer between the antenna and feed line. This is often achieved using a number of different techniques, one of which is the quarter-wavelength transformer (QWT). However, optimizing the width of the QWT presents significant computational and analytical challenges due to the unknown antenna impedance and the absence of explicit design relationships. This thesis aims to overcome these limitations by developing and comparatively evaluating artificial intelligence (AI) models for QWT width optimization. Methods involved Random Forest (RF) and a novel Probabilistic Deep Neural Network (PDNN) on a custom dataset …

Framework-Based Mathematics Intervention: A Practice Guide For School Psychologists, Shaalein C. Lopez

Journal of Applied Disciplines

School psychologists are charged with providing guidance related to the implementation of evidence-based interventions across academic subjects including mathematics. Despite recent advances in the availability of empirically supported intervention and instructional strategies in math, finding appropriate math-related interventions that go beyond fluency building and metacognitive techniques into the realm of math understanding and concept building remains difficult for school psychologists. The adaptation of a framework-based approach to mathematics intervention, such as one developed by the National Center on Intensive Intervention, provides school psychologists with an evidence-based approach that overcomes numerous barriers to providing support for students struggling with mathematics learning.

Psychological Safety In Project-Based Workgroups: The Effect Of Individual Experiences On Performance Outcomes, Jacob Brown, David R. Earnest Dr Nov 2025

Psychological Safety In Project-Based Workgroups: The Effect Of Individual Experiences On Performance Outcomes, Jacob Brown, David R. Earnest Dr

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Abstract Psychological safety is a vital resource across all occupations because it enables employees to learn, contribute, and adapt without fear of negative consequences. Psychological safety empowers members of high stakes, project-based teams to raise concerns, share expertise, and act ethically before miscommunications escalate into costly failures. While prior research in healthcare and aviation has underscored benefits of psychological safety in team environments, less is known about how psychological safety operates across other project-based professions (civil engineering, construction, software development, disaster response) and job sectors that rely on temporary, interdependent project teams. Centering on individual perceptions rather than aggregated team …

Improving Student Resumes: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Ai-Assisted Wisedoc Platform, Juan Munoz, David Earnest Nov 2025

Improving Student Resumes: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Ai-Assisted Wisedoc Platform, Juan Munoz, David Earnest

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Resume quality is a critical factor in students’ transition into the workforce, yet many struggle to create documents aligned with employer expectations and validated competency frameworks. At the same time, most large organizations now rely on artificial intelligence (AI)-driven applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen resumes. Because these systems filter applications before a human reviews them, resumes that are poorly formatted, lack keywords, or fail to highlight relevant competencies are often rejected automatically. This creates a barrier for students who may have the skills employers seek but lack the resume-writing expertise to communicate them effectively. This study investigates whether using …
