The Plymouth County Comfort Dogs Program: Fostering Resiliency, Academic Success, And Relationships With Law Enforcement, Leslie J. Sattler, Robert Mcmackin, Chloe Wojtowicz

Bridgewater Review

As most dog owners will tell you, there is something special about interacting with a dog. They seem to know when we need them, whether it’s because we’re stressed, sad, or simply need an emotional boost. The rise of private individuals and professional agencies offering canine-specific animal-assisted interventions attests to these unique dog qualities. One such provider is the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, which administers the Plymouth County Comfort Dogs Program (PCCDP), a network of handler-dog teams.

Being The “Other”: How Teaching Internationally Impacts Teacher Candidates’ Culturally Sustaining Practices, Jeanne Carey Ingle, Emily Spitzman, Sarah Thomas

Bridgewater Review

In an increasingly globalized world, preparing teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners has become a critical component of teacher education programs. The recently revised Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP) guidelines emphasize the need for teacher candidates to demonstrate growth in their culturally sustaining pedagogy (DESE, 2025). However, traditional approaches to cultural responsiveness in teacher preparation often fall short of comprehensive, practice-oriented methods that foster connections to classroom practice (Gulya & Fehérváry, 2023).

Beyond The Syllabus: Inclusive Teaching For Real-World Classrooms, Myrlene Jean-Venant Nov 2025

Beyond The Syllabus: Inclusive Teaching For Real-World Classrooms, Myrlene Jean-Venant

Bridgewater Review

Many students, whether in elementary or college classrooms, face overlapping challenges related to disability, trauma, poverty, and systemic inequity, and many teachers feel unprepared to provide meaningful support. A ninth-grade Boston charter area teacher once confided to me, “I am aware that my students require assistance, yet I am at a loss as to how to effectively teach them, particularly in regard to students from diverse backgrounds.” This teacher’s statement was not unusual. In my social work roles in several schools, I observed students’ needs and teachers’ uncertainties about how to meet them, which led to my own dedication to …

The Helsinki Accords Turned Fifty. How Should We Celebrate It?, Paul Rubinson

Bridgewater Review

In 2023, Lech Walesa spoke at BSU. More than anything else that night, I remember the ovation. The cheering lasted so long that at one point Walesa slowly checked his watch, as if to ask How long will this go on? Walesa is probably one of the few human beings who merits such adulation. His stubborn defiance in organizing non-communist trade unions eventually forced his government to concede and recognize them in the Gdansk agreement of 1980. A Nobel Peace Prize followed in 1983, and he was elected Polish president in free elections in 1990.

Graphic Design For Visual Narratives: The Semiotics Of Diegetic Retrofuturism, Brooke Luke Ballard Nov 2025

Graphic Design For Visual Narratives: The Semiotics Of Diegetic Retrofuturism, Brooke Luke Ballard

Theses

While semiotics, diegesis, and retrofuturism have all been discussed at length in academia, it is uncommon to find the synthesis of all three. When these concepts are combined, it forms what I argue is a new genre of graphic design now prevalent enough in contemporary media to warrant definition and analysis. This thesis first explores the theories of visual semiotics, narrative diegesis, and retrofuturistic aesthetics individually before uniting them as a new design genre. Several candidates for this design classification will then be examined in case studies that meet the criteria of 1) containing a visual language that a modern …

Exploratory Analysis Of Prerequisites To Teaching Early Perspective Taking In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Zoe Painter Nov 2025

Exploratory Analysis Of Prerequisites To Teaching Early Perspective Taking In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Zoe Painter

Honors College Theses

The purpose of the current study was to determine the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention package for improving perspective-taking skills in children with ASD and specifically extend previous research focused on teaching the ability to identify what others are experiencing through their senses. Less complex verbal behaviors hypothesized to be prerequisites to this skill were first assessed systematically in three male children with ASD receiving ABA services in a community-based clinic, and then participants were taught to predict behavior according to the sensory experiences of others (e.g. after observing that a man sees a fly in his drink, responding the …

"I Come From The Witches You Weren't Ableto Lynch And Burn": Metaphysics And The Rise Of Black Women's Online Spiritual Activism, Blake Montgomery

Theses (2016-Present)

From ancient Black gods to field women who conjured and worked the land. Ancestral griots to church mothers, magicikal practitioners, spell workers, healers, and supernatural rebels. From evil Black witches persecuted and lynched, to dark-skinned devotees, these powerful femmes emerge from centuries of Black metaphysical labor. They are the women we know, may have been raised by, deeply love, yet often fail to acknowledge. If the title of this thesis hasn’t already scared you off—or at worst, confirmed your biases—then you may already know that Black women’s spiritual experiences have long been central to literature, as vividly portrayed by fiction …

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare, inherited monogenic disorder that is typically caused by variants in the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) gene. Genetic testing for ALPL variant(s) to confirm the diagnosis in patients with suspected HPP is a standard practice based on availability. This review attempts to improve the current understanding of the genetics of HPP as it addresses five key related topics: (1) HPP patterns of inheritance and the relationship between HPP genotype and phenotype, (2) how the disease can manifest (including specific genotypes) in heterozygotes, (3) potential reasons why some patients have persistently low alkaline phosphatase activity yet lack …

Neuroblastoma is a paediatric extracranial solid cancer that arises from the developing sympathetic nervous system and is characterised by an abnormal distribution of cell types in tumours compared to healthy infant tissues. In this paper, we propose a new mathematical model of cell differentiation during sympathoadrenal development. By performing Bayesian inference of the model parameters using clinical data from patient samples, we show that the model successfully accounts for the observed differences in cell type heterogeneity among healthy adrenal tissues and four common types of neuroblastomas. Using a phenotypically structured model, we show that alterations in healthy differentiation dynamics are …

Introduction Prediabetes presents an opportunity for early intervention. Growing evidence suggests that psychological stress may contribute to glucose dysregulation, but the findings are inconsistent. This study aimed to clarify the association between perceived stress and glycemic measures, by first testing gender as a moderator, and then examining age as a moderator within each gender group. Research design and methods We analyzed cross-sectional data from 470 diabetes-free adults in Singapore. Participants completed the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, comprising two subscales: perceived helplessness and perceived self-efficacy. Glycemic measures included fasting plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and 2-hour plasma glucose (2h-PG) following an oral …

Beginning A New Department In An Established University, Susan Eliason, Diana Garcia Gomez, Lynn Mayo, Halle Singh

Bridgewater Review

Near Buzzards Bay, during a drizzly morning cycling conversation with Maggie Lowe, we talked about my work as chair for an entirely new department. I said, “You’re making me think I should write about how we moved through the liminal space from a major to a Department.” I often listen to colleagues describe the politics and challenges in academic departments, and since I had the rare opportunity to form something new, I wanted a positive, productive, and enjoyable place to finish out my career. Instead of inheriting a departmental culture, I was responsible for creating one in a 185-year-old public …

Childhood, Memory And Cinephilia In The Work Of Víctor Erice: The Case Of «Cerrar Los Ojos, Carlos Fernández-Rodríguez, Sofía López-Hernández

Artículos científicos

This exploratory and descriptive study analyses Víctor Erice’s film Cerrar los ojos with regard to three key concepts of the author’s work: childhood, memory and cinephilia. The method chosen is audiovisual text analysis framed within qualitative research, and interpretative content analysis. The results confirm Cerrar los ojos as an autofiction that creates a dialogue between the life and work of its author through lost identity, nostalgia for childhood and cinema as redemption.

Towards Automated And Explainable Insider Threat Response In Electronic Health Records: A Role-Aware Machine Learning Framework, Luca Lippi Ornstil

Master's Theses

Healthcare remains a prime target for cyberattacks, with insider misuse and credential compromise posing major risks to Electronic Health Records (EHRs). This thesis introduces a role-aware, explainable anomaly detection and response framework integrated with OpenEMR to address post-authentication threats. Four models—Local Outlier Factor (LOF), Isolation Forest, Autoencoder, and Graph Neural Network (GNN)—detect behavioral deviations across temporal, device, and role-based features, with LOF serving as the primary runtime detector. A configurable policy engine maps anomaly severity to proportional actions, from email alerts to read-only restrictions or account suspension, all reversible and auditable. Evaluation on real EHR logs shows the system’s operational …

Gerunds In Irish Sign Language: An Exploratory Analysis, Zaid Mohammed Nov 2025

Gerunds In Irish Sign Language: An Exploratory Analysis, Zaid Mohammed

Doctoral

In sign languages (SLs), e.g., American Sign Language (ASL), gerunds help express the meaning of ongoing actions and activities conveyed by verbs (Klima & Bellugi, 1979, p. 295). In spoken languages, a gerund is a form of the verb that functions as a noun and expresses the state of being or an ongoing action (Maekelberghe, 2020). Gerunds are complex constructions as they have nominal-verbal nature (Travis, 2005, p. 321) and morphological similarity with present participle or progressive aspect (Siegel, 1998). This research is motivated by the challenging nature of distinguishing gerund constructions at the morphological level, and research in sign …
