Preventable Emergency Department Utilization Among Patients With Foster Care History Compared To Patients Without Foster Care History, Lauren Malthaner, Jill Mcleigh, Gregory Knell, Katelyn Jetelina, Folefac Atem, Sarah Messiah
Health Status, Outcomes, and Literacy and Healthcare Utilization
Emergency department (ED) utilization for preventable reasons by patients with foster care history is unexplored. Medical records of ED encounters from primary care patients were pulled from a southwestern children's hospital system. Necessity of ED encounter was categorized using the New York University- ED Algorithm into emergent, intermediate, or non-emergent. Associations were explored at the encounter- and patient-level. Partial proportional logistic models generated odds of preventable (i.e., intermediate or nonemergent) ED utilization among encounters, and Poisson models determined incidence of preventable ED use at the patient level. Findings suggested that when a patient with history in foster care used the …

A Framework To Retrieve Relevant Laws For Will Execution, Md Asiful Islam, Alice Saebom Kwak, Derek E. Bambauer, Clayton T. Morrison, Mihai Surdeanu
A Framework To Retrieve Relevant Laws For Will Execution, Md Asiful Islam, Alice Saebom Kwak, Derek E. Bambauer, Clayton T. Morrison, Mihai Surdeanu
UF Law Faculty Publications
Wills must comply with jurisdiction-specific statutory provisions to be valid, but retrieving the relevant laws for execution, validation, and probate remains labor-intensive and error-prone. Prior legal information retrieval (LIR) research has addressed contracts, criminal law, and judicial decisions, but wills and probate law remain largely unexplored, with no prior work on retrieving statutes for will validity assessment. We propose a legal information retrieval framework that combines lexical and semantic retrieval in a hybrid pipeline with large language model (LLM) reasoning to retrieve the most relevant provisions for a will statement. Evaluations on annotated will-statement datasets from the U.S. states of …

The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding
The Use Of Science In Climate Governance: Bridging Diplomacy, Public Engagement, And Negotiation Interfaces, Janice Golding
New England Journal of Public Policy
Climate science appears to have come of age, marked by methodological rigor, interdisciplinary integration, and broad consensus. Negotiators in climate multilateralism navigate a complex terrain shaped by politics, economics, and social dynamics, where science may be treated as an insouciant factor in negotiation strategies. As climate change intensifies beyond the 1.5°C threshold, there is a growing risk that science will become even more marginalized in global governance. This could drown out the scientific authority of mandated institutions and create a disconnect between negotiation processes and the evolving role of science, undermining science’s potential to offer renewed relevance and solutions. Urgent …

How Warm-Versus Competent-Toned Ai Apologies Affect Trust And Forgiveness Through Emotions And Perceived Sincerity, Joon Soo Lim, Erika Schneider
Media Studies - All Scholarship
As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becomes more integrated into corporate communication, its role in crisis messaging raises critical questions about audience perception and trust. Drawing on theories of machine heuristics, this study explores how relational cues in AI-authored crisis apologies shape emotional and cognitive responses that ultimately influence trust and forgiveness. A 3 (authorship attribution: AI vs. human vs. control) x 2 (relational tone: warmth vs. competence) between-subjects factorial design with 464 participants was conducted to assess if and how incorporating a warm tone into AI-generated apologies can help overcome AI’s inherent limitations associated with machine heuristics. Results show that …

Excerpt:
Legislation H.R. 1, P.L. 119-21, better known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), was signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4, 2025. In some respects, this bill is a “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act 2.0” since it extends or permanently renews certain provisions from the original Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) that were set to expire at the end of 2025. This article will address some highlights of the OBBBA and give a brief overview of the IRS’ first draft of some of the tax forms necessary for the bill’s implementation [...]

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan As Philosophy Of Religion: The Intersections Of Faith, Science, And Philosophy In An Anime Adaptation, Carl Jayson D. Hernandez
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
Ideas concerning religion are often communicated through popular media, such as anime. One of the anime adaptations that explicitly engages the intersections of religion, science, and philosophy is Vatican Kiseki Chousakan. This anime adaptation centers on a special unit from the Vatican that verifies miraculous phenomena worldwide. In this study, I reflect on how the anime representation communicates religious ideas about miracles, prophecies, and other spiritual matters to its viewers. This critical reflection reveals how anime promotes a philosophical view centered on the complementary relationship between religion and science. With these in mind, this study proceeds as follows. The first …

Integrating Goal-Setting Into An Urban Community College Developmental Mathematics Course: A Multi-Perspective Learning Experience, Tamie S. Dickson
Integrating Goal-Setting Into An Urban Community College Developmental Mathematics Course: A Multi-Perspective Learning Experience, Tamie S. Dickson
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Developmental mathematics (DM) students often encounter systemic and contextual obstacles in higher education. Low self-efficacy, math anxiety, multiple external demands, and pervasive gaps in prerequisite knowledge can all undermine the strategic behaviors needed to manage the academic environment independently. Although DM reforms are widely researched, the literature lacks a firsthand perspective on the daily processes students apply as they assume control over their learning. This qualitative action research study investigated the integration of intentional goal-setting into a recently redesigned one-level pilot DM course at an open-access, urban community college. The practitioner-researcher created the PATHway framework—rooted in Zimmerman’s (2000) three-phase Self-Regulated …
Phylogenetic Comparative Vocal Evolution, Casper W. Buchanan
Phylogenetic Comparative Vocal Evolution, Casper W. Buchanan
Master's Theses
Vocal learning is a trait unique to humans, bats, cetaceans, primates, and birds (Jarvis & Nottebohm, 1997; McComb & Semple, 2005; Wilbrecht & Nottebohm, 2003). Although there has been extensive research on vocal learning in songbirds, parrots are an even closer proxy to human learning, as they are social, intelligent, and lifelong learners, with some having repertoires of over 300 sounds (Benedict et al., 2022; Péron et al., 2011; Thomsen et al., 2019; Toft & Wright, 2015). Elevated vocal learning can be attributed to the need for parrots to have strong communication skills through the sharing of information over foraging, …

Llms Are Bad Judges. So Use A Classifier Instead., Jack Kieffaber, Kimo Gandall, Steven Foster, Kenny Mclaren
SMU Law Review Forum
Large Language Models suffer from prompt variance—meaning they’ll give you totally different legal answers depending on how you phrase your question. Jonathan Choi demonstrated this recently when he asked ChatGPT five legal questions, each rephrased 2,000 times, and watched as the bot spat out different answers every time. When you tell somebody that AI is going to replace the judge, the lawyer, and the legal system in the next twenty years, Choi’s article has become the go-to rebuttal; it’s the crown jewel of the “AI bad” genre.
Choi’s absolutely right that LLM’s are bad judges. And, if every AI was …

Graduate medical education (GME) is undergoing a significant pedagogical transformation, moving away from traditional, passive learning environments toward more dynamic, learner-centered approaches. This narrative review examines the implementation and impact of active teaching methods in GME, with a specific focus on the flipped classroom model. In this narrative review, we compare and contrast these innovative strategies with traditional didactic lectures, evaluating their effects on learner engagement, knowledge retention, clinical reasoning, and overall satisfaction. Active learning, grounded in constructivist theory, repositions the resident as an active participant in their education, utilizing methods such as case-based learning, team-based learning, and simulation. The …

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Emerging adulthood (EA) is characterized as a developmental stage that entails both uncertainty and identity development. However, the experience of EAs varies based on the culture they come from and how much their culture allows flexibility for identity exploration. Our study explores the interplay between cultural frameworks, identity, and non-belonging among a sample of EAs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which presents an interesting case due to its rich multicultural society, with often conflicting cultural expectations. Using qualitative data from 255 culturally diverse participants aged 18-24 (M = 19.53, SD = 1.43), of whom 166 were women (65.1%) and …

The June 24, 2022 Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization represented a seismic shift in abortion policy in the United States. Since then, state courts have begun playing an integral role in expanding or restricting abortion access in their jurisdictions. What do these cases look like and how does the public respond to court decisions that are pro- or anti-abortion? We collect original data on state court abortion cases post-Dobbs and field two survey experiments pre- and post-Dobbs to investigate these questions. We find state courts have expanded their scope in abortion policy and that pro-abortion …

Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is becoming a popular metric to noninvasively identify brain activity through assessing changes in oxygenated (HbO) and deoxygenated (HbR) hemoglobin concentration. Several aspects of fNIRS imaging are appealing for clinical applications but the reproducibility of fNIRS signals has yet to be determined over several sessions. To address this, four participants completed at least ten sessions on separate days where they performed Motor and Visual tasks while fNIRS signals were measured from 102 channels spanning the entire head. Reproducibility was quantified as the percentage of significant task related activity occurring across sessions at the channel and …

The Problem Of Identification Of Linear Stationary Objects With Distributed Parameters By Their Experimental Transient Characteristics, Miraziz Vorisovich Sagatov
The Problem Of Identification Of Linear Stationary Objects With Distributed Parameters By Their Experimental Transient Characteristics, Miraziz Vorisovich Sagatov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
A wide class of control system elements can be described with reasonable accuracy by the concept of a linear stationary dynamic object. Several mathematical descriptions of such an object are known. The traditional mathematical model is a high-order ordinary linear differential equation. In the Laplace image space, this corresponds to a fractional-rational transfer function. The latter can be decomposed into elementary fractions. Then, using the convolution theorem and tables of elementary Laplace transform functions, one can access the originals. It is crucial to ensure precise alignment of the parameters of the mathematical model of the object used in the corrector …
