Exploring Human Perception And Cognition In Expressing And Understanding Mechanical Designs, Yan-Ting Chen
Exploring Human Perception And Cognition In Expressing And Understanding Mechanical Designs, Yan-Ting Chen
Theses
Effective communication of mechanical designs through technical drawings requires geometric accuracy, efficiency, and an understanding of human perception and cognition. Although advances in computer-aided design (CAD) software have improved drawing precision and automation, current tools often overlook the spatial reasoning processes that users employ to interpret these representations. This study seeks to improve the accuracy and efficiency of human-computer interaction in CAD environments by examining how individuals perceive and interpret three-dimensional mechanical components within the context of technical drawings. A key focus is the identification of canonical and optimal views that align with intuitive human understanding. Through a series of …

Dismantling Ableism In Higher Education: Inclusive Learning For Nursing Students With Disabilities, Jane Donovan, Mary Yost, Beth Chiatti, Kathleen Fisher, Joyce Brill, Maureen Gonzalez
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Ableism is defined by the Center for Disability Rights “as a set of beliefs or practices that devalue and discriminate against people with disabilities” (Smith, 2024, para 1). At the root of ableism is the belief that the disabled person is less than in terms of a non-disabled person (Villines, 2021). Ableism in nursing education exists through strict, outdated technical standards that often exclude students with disabilities due to the heavy focus on medical-surgical nursing and bedside nursing (Elting, Avit, & Gordon, 2021). This perspective applies one set of standards or essential functions for all types of nursing occupations, which …

Nurses' Propensity For Spiritual Care: A Nationwide Study Conducted In Oman, Joshua K. Muliira, Eilean R. Lazarus, Omar Al-Zaabi
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Introduction: Epidemiologic and demographic transitions have led to increased prevalence of chronic diseases requiring management in tertiary hospitals of countries like Oman. Many patients with chronic diseases have a high symptom burden, require frequent hospitalizations, and take multiple medications and other therapies, and all these lead to emotional and spiritual challenges. Nurses caring for such patients should provide spiritual care to ensure patient centered cared and attainment of holistic health.
Purpose: We aimed to describe how frequently registered nurses in Oman provide spiritual care therapeutic interventions.
Methods: The study used cross-sectional design and the Nurse Spiritual Care Therapeutics Scale (NSCTS) …

Transformative Learning In Nursing Education: Student Experiences In Kenya, Bethany Ann Murray
Biennial Convention (CONV)
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of prelicensure, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students following a two-week education abroad experience in Kenya. This study is framed by the work of Mezirow, whose theory of transformative education states that individuals experience transformative changes throughout their lives as a process of shifting attitudes, assumptions and expectations to become more inclusive and open to change. These changes are developmentally expected and necessary for adult growth and maturation (Mezirow, 2008). Data were obtained through written narrations at one month following the program. Analysis was done using narrative inquiry methods. …
Staff Education To Improve Clinical Staff Knowledge Of The Social Determinants Of Health In A Public Health Setting, Alba Gisel Ayala
Staff Education To Improve Clinical Staff Knowledge Of The Social Determinants Of Health In A Public Health Setting, Alba Gisel Ayala
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed a critical knowledge gap among clinical staff regarding the application of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) within a local health department. Although SDOH screening tools and the statewide NCCARE 360 referral system were in place, inconsistent use hindered integration into patient care and limited efforts to advance health equity. Guided by the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice model and the ADDIE instructional framework, an educational intervention was developed and implemented to enhance staff knowledge, confidence, and integration of SDOH principles into workflow. Thirty-five clinical staff members participated in pre- and post-intervention assessments. Data …

Research participants should be informed of genetic test results that could impact their health, particularly when they have expressed interest in receiving such information. Furthermore, the return of genetic test results is essential to improve trust, transparency, and health equity. However, investigators often encounter barriers in returning genetic test results to research participants. We examined genomic research at a large, research-intensive medical school and found less than 6% of protocols included plans to return results to participants. This study describes our development of protocols for returning primary and secondary genetic test results and implementation of a Genomic Return of Results …

First Amendment Exceptions To Otherwise Valid Laws: A Doctrinal And Meta-Doctrinal Perspective, Richard H. Fallon Jr.
First Amendment Exceptions To Otherwise Valid Laws: A Doctrinal And Meta-Doctrinal Perspective, Richard H. Fallon Jr.
Northwestern University Law Review
When do the First Amendment’s Free Speech and Free Exercise Clauses require exceptions to generally valid laws? Recently, the Supreme Court has upheld a number of such exceptions, which excuse some speakers and religiously motivated actors from legal duties that apply to others, including in prominent cases under antidiscrimination statutes and emergency pandemic regulations. By contrast, other landmark cases––such as United States v. O’Brien and Employment Division v. Smith—insist that First Amendment exceptions should be rare.
In analyzing the fraught and confusing issues that surround First Amendment exceptions, this Article makes four main contributions. First, it conceptualizes claims to …
Constraints On Inner Core Composition From Seismicanisotropy: The Importance Of Light Elements And Nickel, Jada Bollmeyer, Daniel A. Frost, Prajna Paramita Das
Constraints On Inner Core Composition From Seismicanisotropy: The Importance Of Light Elements And Nickel, Jada Bollmeyer, Daniel A. Frost, Prajna Paramita Das
Faculty Publications
The inner core is seismically anisotropic, with PKIKP waves traversing the inner core parallel to the rotation axis faster than those in the equatorial plane. This anisotropy increases with depth into the inner core and may result from alignment of iron crystals deformed during inner core growth. Using previously calculated elastic properties of iron, we seek to determine the most likely iron-light element alloy (FeC, FeO, FeS, or FeSi). For each FeX alloy, we interpolate elastic tensors across the pressure and temperature range of the inner core and model the anisotropy resulting from flow during core growth. Lastly, we compare …

Maybe It Is Time To Retire The Nlra, Jordan Pollack
Maybe It Is Time To Retire The Nlra, Jordan Pollack
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
Within the first week of his presidency, President Trump removed National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”) General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo and Board Member Gwynne Wilcox, leaving the NLRB without a quorum and therefore unable to have any real impact on cases brought before it. This action sent unions and organizers into a panic as employers celebrated the expanded ability to get away with unfair labor practices and policies that limit strikes and work stoppages. However, the history of unions in America is not one defined by the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”). In fact, the NLRA was implemented to stifle the …
