IASDR Conference Series
Thematic jokes are central to stand-up comedy, sitcoms, and public speaking, where contexts and punchlines rely on fresh material—news, anecdotes, and cultural references that resonate with the audience. Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have enabled interactive joke generation through conversational interfaces. Although LLMs enable interactive joke generation, ordinary conversational interfaces seldom give creators enough agency, control, or timely access to such source material for constructing context and punchlines. We designed Jokeasy, a search-enabled prototype system that integrates a dual-role LLM agent acting as both a material scout and a prototype writer to support human–AI collaboration in thematic joke …

How Interaction Modalities Influence Academic Co-Writing With Generative Artificial Intelligence, Peter Dalsgaard
How Interaction Modalities Influence Academic Co-Writing With Generative Artificial Intelligence, Peter Dalsgaard
IASDR Conference Series
This paper investigates how interaction modalities, specifically text-based versus speech-based interfaces, influence the experience and outcomes of academic co-writing with generative AI (GenAI). Drawing on distributed and situated cognition and human-AI creativity studies, I argue that modality is a structuring force in how ideas emerge, evolve, and stabilize in academic writing. Text-based interaction supports branching exploration, comparative revision, and temporal layering, enabling asynchronous control and persistent visual memory. In contrast, speech-based interaction facilitates associative thinking and spontaneous ideation, offering immediacy and flow. However, it can limit memory offloading, structural manipulation, and cross-comparison. I synthesize findings from related work in HCI, …

Institutional Co-Design For Nishijin Jacquard Weaving: Digital Mediation Across A Networked Craft Field, Kaori Ueda, Roth Bine
IASDR Conference Series
Nishijin weaving is one of Japan’s most renowned traditional textile practices, originating over 560 years ago when weaving artisans regrouped in Kyoto’s Nishijin district. Since then, its techniques have been continuously inherited and adapted through successive cycles of transformation and decline. Japan’s traditional dyeing and weaving industries, exemplified by Nishijin, are characterised by a hybrid positioning between craft and industry, supported by a historically distributed division of labour. This system, while fostering deep expertise, faces stagnation due to institutional disconnects. This paper addresses this challenge by advancing Institutional Co-Design (ICD) as a two-part mechanism that couples digital mediation with co-ordination …
From Projecting Futures To Projecting Otherwise: An Anticipatory Archaeology Of Emerging Design Epistemologies, Marc Chataigner
From Projecting Futures To Projecting Otherwise: An Anticipatory Archaeology Of Emerging Design Epistemologies, Marc Chataigner
IASDR Conference Series
How to overcome design ‘defuturing’ effects? Design scholarship argues that design’s adverse contributions stem from its limited projective capacities to reflect about what design designs and the inherent power structures it conceals. Several design approaches emerged to equip designers with philosophical and social science frameworks and overcome design’s ‘defuturing’ effects. Yet, the ability of these theoretical frameworks to fundamentally change design remains debated. This paper contributes to this discussion by exploring the epistemological underpinnings of five approaches – Transition Design, Mission-Oriented Design, Speculative Design, Pluriversal Design, and More-Than- Human Design. We develop an ‘anticipatory archaeology’ of these theoretical formations to …
