Gravity Gradient Exploration Satellite, Luke Ritchie, Isaac Rosenthal, Benjamin Mason, Nathaniel O’Hara Aug 2026

Gravity Gradient Exploration Satellite, Luke Ritchie, Isaac Rosenthal, Benjamin Mason, Nathaniel O’Hara

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

The Gravity Gradient Exploration Satellite (GGEOS) is a single-unit CubeSat technology demonstration being developed by a group of four undergraduate aerospace engineering students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The mission is designed to validate a controlled, motor-driven, semi-rigid space-tether and deployment system. Space tethers offer significant potential for gravity gradient stabilization and propellant-less electrodynamic propulsion, however past missions have frequently failed due to rebound and tangling from their spring-based deployment systems and elastic tethers. GGEOS mitigates these challenges using a semi-rigid, tape-measure-like tether, deployed with a stepper-motor-driven extrusion system enabling slow, controlled deployment and reduced post-deployment problems. The spacecraft architecture utilizes …

Stormtrack: A Regime-Aware Classifier-Router Architecture For Multi-Horizon Kp Index Forecasting, John Rendleman Aug 2026

Stormtrack: A Regime-Aware Classifier-Router Architecture For Multi-Horizon Kp Index Forecasting, John Rendleman

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

STORMTRACK: A Regime-Aware Classifier-Router Architecture for Multi-Horizon Kp Index Forecasting Current algorithms in operational space weather face extreme difficultly predicting the Kp geomagnetic index beyond 24 hours, a lead time that is critical for protecting high-frequency communications and infrastructure. Most regression models are optimized for quiet conditions, which dominate the data, leading to systematic underpredictions of storm events that cripple space infrastructure. Probabilistic approaches and physics-based numerical models also falter due to the same class imbalance plaguing standard regressors at multi-day lead times. The ICARUS 6 architecture addresses this by splitting the forecasting component into quiet and storm regimes, which …

Accelerating Search And Rescue Response: A Simulation Study On The Dynamic Efficiency Of Flocking-Enabled Drone Swarms, Sophia Beckwith, Carys Del Prete

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

This project explores how imitations observed in animal group behavior, specifically flocking in birds, can be applied to the functionality of autonomous drone systems to aid in search and rescue efforts. The goal is to demonstrate how incorporating code based on the Boids, Vicsck and predictive control linear algebraic mathematical models for drone flight controls and the collective behaviors of flocks will increase the efficiency of drone maneuvers, allowing them to reorganize and fill gaps when one is removed. A MATLAB-based simulation was developed to model the behaviors using research conducted on the symmetric and synchronized behaviors observed from flocks …

A Feedback Loop Control To Automate Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Based Additive Manufacturing, Arineh Shahbazi Aug 2026

A Feedback Loop Control To Automate Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Based Additive Manufacturing, Arineh Shahbazi

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Currently, nanoparticle annealing based additive manufacturing process requires high temperatures, making them unsuitable for a broad range of applications. By lowering the temperature and developing a process to use Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAPP) for annealing, many more doors are opened to a wide range of materials, films, and environments for space, communication, and microelectronics. CAPP-based additive manufacturing technology is continually evolving, making projects like nanoparticle annealing more feasible. In this work, we designed a CAPP jet printer assembly consisting of a 0.25-inch outer diameter glass tube connected to a 3D printing nozzle. The flow of Argon gas in the …

Interplay Between Physical Design Choices And Emergent Cyber System Consensus: A Case Study With An Underwater Swarm, Ava Neubert

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Understanding how physical constraints influence collective behavior is critical for designing cyber-physical multi-agent systems in communication-limited environments. This project investigates how agent mobility and communication constraints affect opinion dynamics in a three-dimensional underwater swarm. An agent-based model was developed in AnyLogic, where agents follow realistic motion dynamics and exchange information at discrete communication intervals to reflect underwater limitations. Agent opinions are modeled using a BOIDS-inspired consensus mechanism in RGB space, allowing visualization of convergence behavior. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of communication range, agent speed, turn rate, and swarm size. Results show that communication range has …

Climate Resilient Infrastructure: The Problem Shift, Tyler Lautieri, Isaiah Morrison, Harrison Totten Aug 2026

Climate Resilient Infrastructure: The Problem Shift, Tyler Lautieri, Isaiah Morrison, Harrison Totten

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Climate change is a heavily debated topic, but recent studies and data show that climate change is leading to an increase in the frequency and severity of hazards. Infrastructure systems are subjected to more compound and cascading events that lead to the degradation of the systems. More traditional infrastructure design relies on concern that the system will be subjected to single hazard issues, and the design focuses on preventing structural failure during these isolated events. These approaches often fail to account for long term degradation of the system, as well as the interacting hazards, and system interdependence, which makes resilience …

Visualizing The Invisible: Simulating Electromagnetic Field In 3d Space With Matlab, Aashman Gupta, Eliane Dean, Riley Esperanca, Hailey Grabinski, Jacob Summerhays, Ameya Sute Aug 2026

Visualizing The Invisible: Simulating Electromagnetic Field In 3d Space With Matlab, Aashman Gupta, Eliane Dean, Riley Esperanca, Hailey Grabinski, Jacob Summerhays, Ameya Sute

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Electromagnetic field behaviours in free space are defined by Maxwell’s Equations, which couple the temporal and spatial variations of electric and magnetic fields through partial derivatives. These derivatives quantify the rate of change of each field’s vector component with respect to position and time in a 3D lattice, forming the basis for numerical field analysis. This research will develop a mathematical and computational framework using multivariable calculus to model, simulate, and visualize electromagnetic wave propagation in free space using MATLAB. Gradient, divergence, and curl operations are implemented to compute local field variations and energy transfer. The resulting data are used …

Bridging The Gap: Cybersecurity And Occupational Safety Frameworks In Ai Data Centers, Athena Leader

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Bridging the Gap: Cybersecurity and Occupational Safety Frameworks in AI Data Centers   As artificial intelligence infrastructure expands, AI data centers represent a critical and underexamined convergence of cybersecurity and occupational safety risk. Existing frameworks such as NIST, OSHA, and ISO standards were largely developed in isolation, leaving significant gaps in how organizations manage risks that are simultaneously digital and physical in nature. This study investigates the gaps and overlaps between cybersecurity and occupational safety frameworks as they apply specifically to AI data center environments. Drawing on a targeted literature review of established regulatory and standards-based frameworks, this research identifies where …

The Algorithm Of Difference: Gender, Communication, And Perception Online, Samantha Garcia Aug 2026

The Algorithm Of Difference: Gender, Communication, And Perception Online, Samantha Garcia

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

This in-progress independent study thesis examines how exposure to gender-targeted content on social media platforms shapes college-aged users’ perceptions of communication differences between men and women. As platforms such as TikTok and Instagram increasingly rely on algorithmic curation, users are exposed to repetitive and often polarized narratives about gender roles, dating expectations, and interpersonal communication. This study builds on genderlect theory, as introduced by Deborah Tannen, while also incorporating more contemporary perspectives that frame gender as socially constructed and culturally performed rather than biologically determined. The research addresses the question of whether algorithm-driven content reinforces, reshapes, or distorts perceived communication …

American Fascism: How Patrick Buchanan Paved The Way For Donald Trump, Hayden Cross Aug 2026

American Fascism: How Patrick Buchanan Paved The Way For Donald Trump, Hayden Cross

History in the Making

The term fascism is often thrown around to describe one’s political opponents; it constantly appears in the news and is used heavily in contemporary political conversation. However, what is fascism? Do the people espousing fascist characterizations on their political opponents know what it means? Furthermore, in the United States, there is a prevalent belief that the nation is immune to fascism. Like the ironic title of Sinclair Lewis’ novel, It Can’t Happen Here, so aptly suggests, people believe that American liberal democracy is an unmalleable constant. During Donald Trump’s second term, concerns regarding a turn to fascism in the United …

Breaking The Parallax: Big Tech In India, Dr. Pratiksha Ashok Aug 2026

Breaking The Parallax: Big Tech In India, Dr. Pratiksha Ashok

National Law School Business Law Review

This paper examines the role of Big Tech in India through the conceptual lens of parallax, understood as the analytical distortion that arises when platform power is assessed from shifting institutional, legal, and geopolitical vantage points. Existing scholarship and policy debates tend to frame Big Tech in India either through Global North regulatory paradigms emphasizing monopoly power, market foreclosure, and the need for ex-ante constraints or through a domestic developmental narrative that positions digital platforms as engines of innovation, inclusion, and infrastructural expansion. This paper argues that neither perspective, taken in isolation, adequately captures the legal and political economy of …

Training And Resources For Clinicians To Reduce Paperwork Burden And Improve Patient Work Capacity Documentation, Emilio Del Toro, Susan Gatti, Jennifer Kimble, Rebekah Lewis, Karen L. Fortuna, Samantha Migdail-Goyette, Gregory G. Morneau, Donald J. Medd, Ricky Snyder, Karen L. Huyck

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Problem: Inadequate patient work capacity documentation by clinicians contributes to health and economic inequity, clinical inefficiency, and worse patient health outcomes. The intersection of an aging workforce and high amounts of work disability presents an opportunity for health systems to integrate occupational health best practices across clinical settings to improve patient health and work outcomes. Clinicians, however, are often unfamiliar with navigating patient work capacity forms to help patients maintain or obtain employment. This knowledge gap further perpetuates work disability.

Approach: To compensate for this gap, we co-created a training for clinicians that integrates didactic learning and supplemental resources to …

From Covert Use To Structured Oversight: A Framework For Institutional Governance Of Artificial Intelligence In Graduate Medical Education, Samuel R. Briggs, Bita Behrouzi, Robert Hayden Aug 2026

From Covert Use To Structured Oversight: A Framework For Institutional Governance Of Artificial Intelligence In Graduate Medical Education, Samuel R. Briggs, Bita Behrouzi, Robert Hayden

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Problem Statement: Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are routinely used by residents and fellows across graduate medical education. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has no AI-specific policy nor requirement for disclosure norms, leaving programs and attending physicians without a standard framework for supervising AI-assisted trainee work. The result is a training environment in which AI use is simultaneously widespread and under-governed by operating without the policies and supervisory frameworks needed to make that use educationally productive.

Background: AI tools are now embedded across health system workflows, and their use has expanded beyond clinical documentation into education, research, and scholarly …

Low-Barrier Infectious Disease Specialty Care For Patients Experiencing Homelessness, Eva J. Farkas, Thomas Reynolds, Kimberly Mooney, Adam Normandin, Taylor Nisbett, Kinna Thakarar Aug 2026

Low-Barrier Infectious Disease Specialty Care For Patients Experiencing Homelessness, Eva J. Farkas, Thomas Reynolds, Kimberly Mooney, Adam Normandin, Taylor Nisbett, Kinna Thakarar

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Problem: Homelessness is prevalent in Maine and throughout the United States. People experiencing homelessness have unique medical needs that require both primary and subspecialist care, but they face barriers to accessing these services. Infectious diseases, including HIV, viral hepatitis, and skin and soft tissue infections, are highly morbid but are preventable and treatable. Thus, access to infectious disease subspecialty care is a high-impact target for improving the health of people experiencing homelessness. Particularly given Maine's HIV outbreak, there is an urgent need to reduce barriers to accessing infectious disease care.

Approach: In January 2022, a monthly, half-day infectious disease subspecialty …
