Private Standards As Liability Shields: A Pro-Innovation Artificial Intelligence Regulatory Approach For States, Gary E. Marchant, Jordan Buckwald Jan 2026

Private Standards As Liability Shields: A Pro-Innovation Artificial Intelligence Regulatory Approach For States, Gary E. Marchant, Jordan Buckwald

Minnesota Journal of Law, Science & Technology

States face a dilemma. The federal government is not regulating artificial intelligence (AI), and is threatening states that regulate the technology with preemption and funding restrictions. Moreover, piecemeal state regulation with different substantive requirements risks impeding AI innovation and harming our national interest and security. And yet, AI creates a whole host of problems relating to accuracy, safety, security, bias, transparency, privacy, and autonomy that needs to be governed. This Article presents a solution to this dilemma that can protect against AI risks without harming innovation and the national interest. The proposal is for states to provide a liability shield …

Creative Destruction For The Patent System? Impact Of Generative Ai, Henry H. Perritt Jr. Jan 2026

Creative Destruction For The Patent System? Impact Of Generative Ai, Henry H. Perritt Jr.

Minnesota Journal of Law, Science & Technology

AI raises the provocative possibility that patents could one day become obsolete. AI has the ability both to generate inventions and to simulate the perspective of a person having ordinary skill in the art (PHOSITA). This article explores the transformative impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the United States patent system. The article supports a scenario in which everything becomes invented—and simultaneously, everything becomes obvious—thus challenging a foundational criterion for patentability. These developments can occur within established principles of inventorship, obviousness, and subject matter eligibility under U.S. patent law. Using a narrative case study and a test invention, the …

The Past, Present, And Future Of Customer Knowledge Management: A Review And Research Agenda, Victoria Y. Ourzik Jan 2026

The Past, Present, And Future Of Customer Knowledge Management: A Review And Research Agenda, Victoria Y. Ourzik

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

We develop and present a framework for research in customer knowledge management (CKM) that synthesizes insights from a comprehensive literature review spanning 2000 to 2024. This framework highlights the determinants, impacts, and moderators shaping CKM and its role in contemporary organizations. Using this approach, we organize and categorize existing research across various disciplines, identifying multiple definitions of customer knowledge based on their theoretical underpinnings and research fields. Building on this synthesis, we propose an interdisciplinary definition of the CKM construct that integrates diverse perspectives. Finally, we outline evolving issues within CKM, highlight key research gaps, and set a forward-looking agenda …

Parental Beliefs And Behaviors Surrounding Childhood Vaccination, Kamara Braylock, Caitlin Davis, Avery Huff, Alex Springer Jan 2026

Parental Beliefs And Behaviors Surrounding Childhood Vaccination, Kamara Braylock, Caitlin Davis, Avery Huff, Alex Springer

MSN Research Projects

Parental hesitancy toward childhood vaccinations continues to present challenges for healthcare providers, public health agencies, and communities striving to protect children from preventable diseases. This project explored the factors that influence parents' decisions about vaccinating their children, using Rosenstock's Health Belief Model (HBM) as the guiding theoretical framework. A review of the literature indicated that vaccine hesitancy rarely stems from a single cause; rather, it reflects a combination of concerns, including fear of side effects, mistrust in the healthcare system, inconsistent information, cultural influences, and varying levels of confidence in medical recommendations. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey design was used to …

Revisiting The Rural Folk Devil: Rural 'Othering' And The Connections Between Media Stereotypes And Rural Issues, Brooke Baker, Ida L. Oesteraas, Stephen T. Young, Elizabeth Monk-Turner Jan 2026

Revisiting The Rural Folk Devil: Rural 'Othering' And The Connections Between Media Stereotypes And Rural Issues, Brooke Baker, Ida L. Oesteraas, Stephen T. Young, Elizabeth Monk-Turner

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The current study is a discourse analysis investigating anti-idyllic cinematic representations, specifically in the horror genre, of rural people, places, and cultures. Findings reveal that anti-idyllic images and discourses are prominent within recently released horror films, which rely heavily on framing rural people as the deviant “other.” Special attention is given to the cultural work of these stereotypical depictions and the associated social harms for rural communities. Specifically, we argue that (1) corporations, particularly film companies, contribute to social harm in rural areas by disseminating negative and anti-idyllic representations; (2) these portrayals have tangible and detrimental effects on both people …

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: I: Fixed Time Existence, James Glimm, James Glimm Jan 2026

The Pure Yang-Mills Field: I: Fixed Time Existence, James Glimm, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The convergence of renormalized perturbation theory to all finite orders is defined and shown to be valid for the fixed time perturbation theory of a pure Yang-Mills field.

Two pure Yang-Mills quantum gauge field theories are constructed, one based on short distance asymptotics and the other based on long distance asymptotics.

The construction depends on an assumed principle of a maximum rate of entropy production.

General Relativity: Existence, James Glimm Jan 2026

General Relativity: Existence, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematically rigorous renormalized perturbative expansion, truncated to all finite orders, establishes the existence of quantum general relativity theories with Fermion matter fields. The expansion is initialized with the selection of a vacuum state.

Distinct infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) vacuum states are considered. The IR vacuum state defines a cosmology model. The UV vacuum state defines a black hole model.

The vacuum state is initialized with a $\mathfrak{o}^3$ gauge Lie algebra defining a quark-gluon plasma. With this choice, string theory is avoided.

Finite order renormalized perturbation theory, defined using Bosons to avoid Fermion sign cancellation, is convergent to all …

Scaling Laws, James Glimm Jan 2026

Scaling Laws, James Glimm

Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Scaling laws, accurate to all orders and for intermediate times, are constructed for Navier-Stokes and Euler fluids and for quantum Yang-Mills fields. A maximum entropy principle is assumed.

Conventional renormalization group scaling is accurate to all orders in a large time asymptotic limit, but it fails at intermediate times at less than leading order due to a finite sequence of blowups.

The extension to quantum general relativity is indicated.

From Motherhood To Sisterhood: Women Strike For Peace And The Transmission Of Feminist Consciousness, Olivia R. Aldrich Jan 2026

From Motherhood To Sisterhood: Women Strike For Peace And The Transmission Of Feminist Consciousness, Olivia R. Aldrich

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Women Strike for Peace (WSP) has traditionally been understood as a maternalist peace movement that emerged in response to atmospheric nuclear testing during the early Cold War era. This thesis argues that WSP’s history reveals a more nuanced relationship between motherhood, feminism, and political activism than existing scholarship has suggested. Rather than operating in distinct stages, maternalism and feminism operated simultaneously, working alongside one another throughout the organization’s history. Furthermore, this thesis builds upon Ednie Kaeh Garrison’s concept of feminist “radio waves,” arguing that WSP functioned as a transmitter of feminist consciousness, where ideas, organizational practices, and different political identities …

Infrared Systems And Their Application On Target Detection And Geolocation, Li Zhang Jan 2026

Infrared Systems And Their Application On Target Detection And Geolocation, Li Zhang

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The infrared spectrum contains various sub-bands (from near infrared (NIR) to long-wave infrared (LWIR), which are specialized at different detection tasks. Objects that are well camouflaged to human vision can be highly noticeable in NIR imagery. For vision navigation, the varying illumination condition and the cluttered urban background poses challenges in the visible band but can easily be resolved by using a thermal imager operating in LWIR. Despite this potential, practical deployment remains limited by the lack of suitable platforms, task-specific datasets, and long-duration field validation. This dissertation addresses these gaps through the design and evaluation of two infrared sensing …

Bowtie Antenna-Coupled Bi₂Te₃–Sb₂Te₃ Thermoelectric Detector For Millimeter-Wave Radiation, Rumana Zahir Jan 2026

Bowtie Antenna-Coupled Bi₂Te₃–Sb₂Te₃ Thermoelectric Detector For Millimeter-Wave Radiation, Rumana Zahir

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

We explore the development of antenna-coupled thermoelectric detectors for long-wavelength radiation using sputtered bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) and antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) thin films. Detection in the infrared, millimeter-wave, and terahertz regimes is critical for sensing, imaging, and energy applications; however, many existing detectors rely on cryogenic operation, exhibit narrow spectral response, or require complex material systems. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of reliable, room-temperature long-wavelength detection using microfabricated thermoelectric thin films integrated with antenna structures. A systematic full-factorial experimental approach was employed to determine how sputtering parameters and post-deposition annealing influence …

Charge Transport Modeling Of Multifunctional Molecular Transistors, Romena Akter Jan 2026

Charge Transport Modeling Of Multifunctional Molecular Transistors, Romena Akter

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Distinguishing between the current–voltage characteristic curves associated with different transport mechanisms in a molecular electronic device and an artifact arising from device-level disorder is a central challenge in the study of molecular electronics. Characterizing these mechanisms and connecting them qualitatively to molecular-level orbital alignment, electrode coupling, voltage division, energetic disorder, and reorganization energy requires not only experimental data but also a rigorous theoretical framework for extracting physically meaningful parameters from measured transfer characteristics. This dissertation addresses this challenge in Chapters 2, 3, and 4 by developing and applying four complementary transport models —Simmons tunneling, single-level Landauer, Marcus hopping, and McConnell …

Connecting The Existing Fiber Infrastructure To The Future With Antiresonant Hollow Core Fibers, Timothy Bate Jan 2026

Connecting The Existing Fiber Infrastructure To The Future With Antiresonant Hollow Core Fibers, Timothy Bate

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Optical fiber systems based on solid-core silica waveguides underpin modern telecommunications, high-power laser delivery, precision sensing, and coherent optical systems. However, nonlinear effects, material absorption, and thermal limitations within silica increasingly constrain further scaling in both optical power and transmission performance. Antiresonant hollow-core fibers provide a promising alternative by guiding light predominantly in air, substantially reducing nonlinear interactions, latency, and optical damage while enabling transmission regimes inaccessible to conventional solid-core fibers. Despite rapid advances in antiresonant hollow-core fiber attenuation and power handling, one of the largest remaining barriers to widespread adoption is reliable integration with the existing solid-core fiber ecosystem. …

Making Unsafe Sequences Unexecutable: Formal Protocol Enforcement For Cyber-Physical Systems, Arthur Amorim Jan 2026

Making Unsafe Sequences Unexecutable: Formal Protocol Enforcement For Cyber-Physical Systems, Arthur Amorim

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Cyber-physical systems execute physical actions in response to software commands, making their communication protocols a primary attack surface. A stealthy attack is a sequence of individually valid messages that violates a required ordering, driving the system into an unsafe state without malware or protocol violation. Existing defenses examine messages or physical state in isolation, not protocol level sequences, and cannot prevent them. Preventing them requires enforcement that makes unsafe sequences unexecutable at the communication boundary.

Formal methods offer a principled path to enforcement, but no tool spans specification to safe deployed hardware. Model checking automates proofs but has no certified …

Effects Of Back-Pressure On Pseudo-Shock Systems, Emil C. Alunno Jan 2026

Effects Of Back-Pressure On Pseudo-Shock Systems, Emil C. Alunno

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

The isolator of a scramjet engine houses a pseudo-shock, a compressive flow structure that raises the static pressure and decelerates the incoming supersonic flow for efficient combustion while shielding the inlet from the elevated pressure downstream. Under sufficient back pressure the leading shock bifurcates and forms a shock train followed by a shockless mixing region, and the resulting system oscillates even under nominally steady conditions; this unsteadiness distorts the flow, can drive the pseudo-shock out of the isolator and unstart the inlet. This thesis experimentally examines how a pseudo-shock in a constant-area isolator at a measured entrance Mach number of …

Sensory And Emotional Impacts On Modern Consumer Experiences, Winter E. Bland Jan 2026

Sensory And Emotional Impacts On Modern Consumer Experiences, Winter E. Bland

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

This dissertation comprises two essays examining how environmental and psychological stimuli shape consumer experience, attitudes, and cognition. The first essay investigates the joint influence of scent temperature (warm versus cool) and scent arousal (stimulating versus relaxing) on experiential attitudes and cognitive performance in digitally mediated consumption environments. Across multiple lab experiments with biometric validation, findings reveal that these two scent dimensions interact to shape downstream outcomes. Warm, low-arousal scents (e.g., vanilla) enhance consumers' experiential evaluations of digital interactions but do not improve task performance, whereas cool, high-arousal scents (e.g., peppermint) boost cognitive efficiency and accuracy but do not elevate experiential …

Exploring The Experiences Of Late Age-On-Arrival Multilingual Learners In Postsecondary Education, Robyn D. Ecklund Jan 2026

Exploring The Experiences Of Late Age-On-Arrival Multilingual Learners In Postsecondary Education, Robyn D. Ecklund

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Multilingual learners (MLs) are the fastest growing population in the United States public school system (Biondi et al., 2024; Kanno & Cromley, 2013; Perez & Morrison, 2016; Varghese & Fuentes, 2020). Within this population of students, there is a subset of students that arrive in the United States during secondary school. These “late age-on-arrival” students face significant linguistic, cultural and social challenges in their pursuit of postsecondary success after high school (Kanno, 2021; Kanno & Cromley, 2013; Perez & Morrison, 2016). This interpretative phenomenological analysis sought to answer the research question: what are the lived experiences of late age-on-arrival MLs …
