Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

MnBi-based magnetic materials and magnets are of significant interest due to their magnetism without rare earth elements and their ability to replace Nd-Fe-B in high-temperature magnet applications due to its unique feature of enhancing coercivity in the range of 100℃ to 250℃, enabling their energy product (BH)max comparable to NdFeB magnets despite their moderate spontaneous magnetization Msp. To adjust the magnetic properties of MnBi magnets, various elements have been doped to regulate magnetic interactions among the atoms, which subsequently alters Msp and the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy. In this work, we investigate the effects of chromium doping on the magnetic properties …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This study presents a novel approach for fabricating Ba5Nb4O15 (BNO) ceramics at low sintering temperatures via the cold sintering process (CSP), using Ba(OH)2∙8H2O (BOH) as a transient liquid phase. CSP was performed under an external pressure of 10 MPa with a sintering temperature range of 150℃ to 300℃. Optimally, BNO-BOH ceramics achieved a relative density of 93.7 ± 0.43% when sintered at 250℃ for 1 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) suggested that particle densification occurred via a dissolution-precipitation process, which filled pores and formed necks between particles. The study demonstrates that the residual liquid content is crucial for ceramic densification. …

Li5feo4 As A Cathode Prelithiation Additive : Doping Engineering And First-Principles Research, Zixiang Li, Zile Zou, Jialan Li, Chennan Ma, Jiarun Li, Xiaoyu Liu, Jin Yi, Jianhui Li

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

During the initial charge-discharge cycle, irreversible loss of active lithium (~ 5% to 15%) severely affects the battery energy density and shortens cycle life of lithium‑ion batteries (LIBs). Prelithiation strategy has gradually become an effective approach to compensate for the irreversible loss of active lithium. Lithium ferrate (Li5FeO4, LFO) is considered to be a promising cathode prelithiation additive due to its high theoretical capacity (867 mAh·g‒1), suitable delithiation potential (3.5 V to 4.1 V), and competitive raw material. However, the application of LFO is limited by the its properties including poor air stability, low electronic conductivity, and incomplete delithiation. Currently, …

Magnetocaloric Effect Of Gdtbdyerpr Rare-Earth High-Entropy Alloy, Yu Liu, Lei Gao, Jun Peng, Haitao Guo

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

In this study, a GdTbDyErPr rare-earth high-entropy alloy (RE HEA) was successfully synthesized and its magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the as-cast GdTbDyErPr RE HEA exhibits a single-phase hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure with lattice parameters of a = 3.609 Å and c = 5.734 Å. Based on large parameter Ω, high mixing entropy (ΔSmix), and small parameters δ and εi, it can be inferred that the GdTbDyErPr alloy forms a disordered solid solution. The GdTbDyErPr RE HEA undergoes a first-order magnetic transition near about 143 K. The parameters |∆ |, RC, and …

Observation Of Altermagnetic Spin-Splitting In An Intercalated Transition Metal Dichalcogenide, Milo X. Sprague, Madhab Neupane

Research Data and Datasets

Altermagnetism is a novel magnetic phase combining characteristics of both antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetic ordering. Despite growing theoretical interest in altermagnetic materials, reports of experimentally verified high-Néel-temperature layered compounds are limited or remain to be firmly established. In our manuscript, Observation of Altermagnetic Spin-Splitting in an Intercalated Transition Metal Dichalcogenide by M. Sprague et al, we present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory study of Co1/4TaSe2, a compound we identify as a layered altermagnetic material. Our spin-resolved and spin-integrated angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal an electronic band structure in excellent agreement with density functional theory calculations, demonstrating clear signatures …

Play-Based Learning In Private International Preschools In Cairo: Teachers' Perspectives, Kesha L. Stovall

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how play-based learning is practiced and contextualized in private, international preschools in Cairo, Egypt through the perspective of teachers. It calls upon both historical and contemporary theories of play and play pedagogies ranging from the times of Plato and Al-Farabi to the 21st century with Montessori and Dewey. Using a contemporary theory of play presented by Stuart Lester and Wendy Russell as a guiding framework, it examines how play and play-based learning are implemented, shaped and even challenged in a Cairene context. These contexts include sociocultural factors such as parents’ expectations and aspirations, institutional barriers, teacher development …

Reforming Revocation By Physical Act, Barry Cushman Jan 2026

Reforming Revocation By Physical Act, Barry Cushman

Journal Articles

From the Introduction

In a previous article, I documented the various problems that are created by the law’s recognition of the power of a testator to revoke his will in whole or in part by physical act. That article canvassed five different areas of law in which such difficulties arise: ineffective attempts at revocation; the presumption of revocation; partial revocation by physical act; dependent relative revocation; and revival. In this Article, I first explore the asymmetries within the law of wills created by the persistence of revocation by physical act. I then offer some reflections on possibilities for reform.

Ain’T Nothing Like The Real Thing: How Legal Research Programs Can Provide The Needed Safety Rails For Pro Se Litigants Using Ai In Litigation, Nicole Belbin Jan 2026

Ain’T Nothing Like The Real Thing: How Legal Research Programs Can Provide The Needed Safety Rails For Pro Se Litigants Using Ai In Litigation, Nicole Belbin

Faculty Scholarship

An estimated 92% of legal needs go unmet in America, leaving a growing number of pro se litigants to “manage their own cause.” Between 2000 and 2019, 27% of all civil cases filed in U.S. District Courts, totaling 1,501,079 cases, had at least one party without attorney representation. The legal profession is abuzz about the potential for generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools to “smooth out any mismatch between available resources and urgent needs in our court system”; however, “hallucinations” have quickly proved a limitation to reaching this technology’s full potential. The complexity of legal research and analysis increases the chance …

Constructing Effectiveness: Culture, Legitimacy, And Strategic Planning In Zoos And Aquariums, Robin Keith

Dissertations

Zoos and aquariums are complex organizations operating with multiple mandates—saving species, providing exceptional care to animals, connecting communities with nature, and inspiring environmental action—making “effectiveness” difficult to define. What counts as success depends on who is asked and which goals are foregrounded. This study investigated how stakeholders in Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)–accredited organizations conceptualize and operationalize effectiveness within strategic planning processes. Prior research on nonprofit and mission-driven organizations has shown effectiveness is multidimensional and often defined differently by various stakeholders. However, little has been known about how these definitions are negotiated through the practice of strategic planning, …

Emotional Expression For Community Healing: A Study Of Restorative Justice Circle Discussions Addressing Social Harm, Hannah Darnell

FCRH Honors Program Theses

Restorative justice (RJ) programs have increasingly been used to respond to social harm, and at times have been employed as alternatives to some of the United States’ traditional criminal court procedures. Studies suggest that these restorative programs find success in repairing relationships and reintegrating individuals back into their communities, tend to be perceived as positive by participants, and have the potential to reduce recidivism rates. This study explores how and why these restorative justice meetings work through an examination of the presence and evolution of participant emotional expression, as well as the role that outward communication of emotion has in …
