Governing Economic Statecraft: Procedural Guardrails From State Practice, Wto Rules, Multilateral Trade, Dah-Wei Yih
Governing Economic Statecraft: Procedural Guardrails From State Practice, Wto Rules, Multilateral Trade, Dah-Wei Yih
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
National security exceptions have long been part of international trade law, but their use has expanded alongside the rise of economic statecraft. States now increasingly rely on geoeconomic tools such as sanctions, subsidies, tariffs, and investment and export controls to pursue geopolitical goals. This phenomenon, described by political scientists as “weaponized interdependence,” has blurred the boundary between economic policy and national security, thereby straining the integrity of WTO rules and the multilateral trading system.
Against this backdrop, how can states promote rule-of-law values such as transparency and predictability on the international plane as they implement geoeconomic policies?
This Article makes …
State Complicity And The Threshold Of Knowledge: From Fragmentary Evidence To Evidentiary Saturation, Christina Bradic
State Complicity And The Threshold Of Knowledge: From Fragmentary Evidence To Evidentiary Saturation, Christina Bradic
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
The International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) 2007 judgment in Bosnia v. Serbia turned on evidentiary gaps. Although the ICJ recognized that genocide had been committed at Srebrenica, it declined to hold Serbia complicit, reasoning that the record did not prove awareness of genocidal purpose. Intelligence was piecemeal, contemporaneous witnesses were scarce, and the ICJ refused to infer knowledge absent direct proof.
Two decades later, the evidentiary environment looks radically different. In October 2024, ninety-nine American healthcare professionals who had volunteered in Gaza sent an open letter to the White House reporting that children with gunshot wounds to the head or …
Individual Olympic Athlete Participation Model: Moving Toward The Standardization Of International Olympic Committee Sanction Power, Claire Fedor
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
In 2024, at the Paris Olympic Games, the Russian Olympic Committee was notably absent; however, the International Olympic Committee admitted a select group of Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under the title “Individual Neutral Athlete.” The athletes’ eligibility was determined by an Individual Neutral Athlete Eligibility Review Panel, and their participation required strict adherence to specifically tailored principles. This model is the most recent approach to permitting individual athletes’ participation despite their National Olympic Committee (NOC)’s suspension from the Olympic Games. This Note examines the absence of a uniform application for individual athlete participation in the Olympic Games amid …
Prescribed Fire Liability And Administration In Western States: An Empiricalanalysis And Call For Reform, Stephen R. Miller, Anastasia Telesetsky
Prescribed Fire Liability And Administration In Western States: An Empiricalanalysis And Call For Reform, Stephen R. Miller, Anastasia Telesetsky
Utah Law Review
Wildfires have grown exponentially over the last few years due to fuel loads, range- and timber-management policies, and climate change. The cost of fire suppression is also growing in both rural and urban areas. For instance, the 2016 Pioneer Fire in rural Idaho cost around $100 million to fight, while the 2025 urban conflagrations in Los Angeles, California destroyed over 16,000 structures despite an astonishing array of suppression resources deployed. Something new, and something big, in terms of law and policy interventions, is needed to stem the intensity of wildfires. Increasingly, governments, private citizens, and even corporate interests like insurance …
Plastic Pollution: Investigating Environmental Pathways And Critically Evaluating Interventions, Florence Parker-Jurd
Plastic Pollution: Investigating Environmental Pathways And Critically Evaluating Interventions, Florence Parker-Jurd
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Plastics are lightweight, versatile, and durable materials used in the manufacture of a wide range of products. Innovation in the early 1950’s facilitated a dramatic reduction in production costs with the potential to mass produce inexpensive convenience items intended for single use applications. As a consequence, plastic production has grown exponentially over the last 75 years, and a throw away culture of single use has become deeply engrained in modern society. Plastic production exceeds 450 million tonne/yr, substantially exceeding our capacity to manage associated waste resulting in pollution accumulating in every compartment of the natural environment. While plastic pollution has …
Influence Of Ecological Transitions On The Evolution Of Circadian And Light Detection Genes In Squamates, Isobel Sleep
Influence Of Ecological Transitions On The Evolution Of Circadian And Light Detection Genes In Squamates, Isobel Sleep
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Circadian rhythms are self-sustaining, endogenous processes that align behaviour and physiology with daily environmental cycles. Rhythms are regulated by conserved genes forming transcriptional feedback loops and are entrained by environmental cues (e.g., light). Circadian systems are well studied in model organisms, their molecular evolution in squamates (lizards and snakes) remains less understood. Squamates represent the most species-rich reptile group with extensive ecological and sensory diversity, exhibiting multiple independent transitions across ecological niches, including repeated shifts into low-light environments (e.g., nocturnality, fossoriality), making them ideal for examining circadian and light-associated gene evolution. This study investigates how ecological transitions have influenced the …
Coping With Climate Change: The Role Of Plasticity Within And Across Generations, Caitlin Mcandry
Coping With Climate Change: The Role Of Plasticity Within And Across Generations, Caitlin Mcandry
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Climate change is leading to increased mean temperatures and more frequent and severe temperature anomalies, threatening organisms globally. Phenotypic plasticity, the ability of a given genotype to express different phenotypes in different environments, may offer a mechanism that allows organisms to temporarily persist in a rapidly changing environment, ultimately buying time for genetically based adaptations to evolve. Plasticity has been demonstrated both within and across generations, in response to different environmental stressors. However, our understanding of the interactive effects of plastic responses across levels of biological organisation, and over temporal scales from hours to generations, is still limited. Additionally, we …
Application Of Coastal Change Management Areas (Ccmas) For Coastal Adaptation To Climate Change Impacts In Sw England, Josie-Alice Kirby
Application Of Coastal Change Management Areas (Ccmas) For Coastal Adaptation To Climate Change Impacts In Sw England, Josie-Alice Kirby
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Coastal Change Management Areas (CCMAs) were introduced into the English planning system in 2012 to enable anticipatory management of long-term coastal change. However, their implementation has been limited and inconsistent, reflecting uncertainty in how future shoreline change should be defined and translated into statutory planning boundaries. This thesis addresses the gap between national coastal adaptation policy and the scientific evidence required to support its practical application. The research combines policy analysis, geomorphological classification and probabilistic modelling to develop a structured framework for delineating areas of future coastal change. Chapter 2 evaluates the national implementation of CCMAs and demonstrates substantial variability in …
From Public To Policy How Jellyfish Data And Citizen Science Can Be Used For Biodiversity Management, John Terenzini
From Public To Policy How Jellyfish Data And Citizen Science Can Be Used For Biodiversity Management, John Terenzini
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Long term biodiversity data is necessary for detecting biological and ecological changes to marine ecosystems. The data can inform marine policy, yet data are often lacking for some species and traditional data collection approaches can be logistically challenging and expensive. Jellyfish are one taxon for which data are lacking, and data collection can be challenging due to their life history traits and the inherent challenges of marine research. This research aims to provide evidence for the importance of monitoring jellyfish, demonstrate the effectiveness of citizen science for monitoring jellyfish, and examine how jellyfish monitoring data can inform international frameworks. The …

Factors That Impact K-6th Grade Teachers’ Sense Of Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Study, Becky A. Eckburg
Factors That Impact K-6th Grade Teachers’ Sense Of Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Study, Becky A. Eckburg
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
Although there have been efforts to narrow the "achievement gap," research shows that the academic achievement levels of students in low socioeconomic school settings are likely to be significantly lower than the academic achievement levels of students in higher socioeconomic school settings (Babayiğit et al., 2021; Rahman et al., 2024). Studies also show that teachers have a significant impact on their students' growth, no matter what their academic setting may be (Petek & Pope, 2023), and that collective teacher self-efficacy is a significant factor in positive student achievement (Hattie, 2008). If targeted professional development could support teachers' self-efficacy, student achievement …
Structures Of Fantasy In Terry Gilliam's 'Time Bandits', Sean Fash
Structures Of Fantasy In Terry Gilliam's 'Time Bandits', Sean Fash
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
Terry Gilliam’s use of fantasy genre conventions in his filmography is obvious in presence, but elusive in understanding. Time Bandits, as an early entry into this filmography, simultaneously seems to mock and embody these genre conventions. This paper seeks to find a way to understand Time Bandits on a structural level through existing frameworks in fantasy criticism and to see what deeper meanings the film holds behind its silly, fantastical presentation. These structural templates of analysis are John Clute’s “full fantasy model” from his Encyclopedia of Fantasy and Farah Mendlesohn’s “portal quest fantasy” from her Rhetorics of Fantasy. By deconstructing …
From Pañales To Partnership: An Ethnographic Investigation Of Knowledge, Gender, And Power Within A Family Literacy Program, Sara Mohler
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
Within research on family literacy programming (Lynch & Prins, 2021), few studies bring together assets-based perspectives on knowledge and power alongside critical feminist lenses. This qualitative case study (Dyson & Genishi, 2005; Yin, 2018) informed by ethnography (Alonso Bejarano et al., 2019; Desmond, 2014; Günel & Watanabe, 2024) aimed to understand the culture of one family literacy program serving primarily Mexican-American families, named here the Treehouse Preschool, giving particular attention to the intersecting elements of knowledge, gender, and power as they are enacted across the roles and relationships of families and personnel participating in in the program. Data for this …

Over half of all spinal cord injuries (SCIs) in the United States occur at the cervical level and often cause both life-threatening breathing dysfunction and profound locomotor deficits. Although the C2 hemisection (C2Hx) model is vital for study of breathing dysfunction after experimental SCI, post-C2Hx locomotor deficits have only been assessed by metrics such as the Martínez Scale and ladder tests, which require time-intensive scoring by human observers. However, the CatWalk XT Gait Analysis system (Noldus Information Technology) delivers automated, quantitative assessment of interlimb coordination, gait cycle, and paw function, providing robust locomotor data in a time-efficient and practical manner. …

Biostatistics Faculty Publications
Introduction – The increasing reliance on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams has reshaped how science is conducted, yet evaluating the success of such teams remains a persistent challenge. Traditional metrics, such as publication counts, impact factors, and citation indices, fail to capture the full scope of team contributions, particularly in contexts where success may be defined by community engagement, mentorship, or long-term collaboration. Methods – In this Perspective, we introduce Collaborative Guideposts, a framework designed to align success metrics with a team’s organizing priorities. We illustrate this approach through two contrasting team models from a biostatistical collaboration center: Team A, a …

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
The existing literature has explored the relationship between insecure attachment styles and parasocial relationships, particularly focusing on traditional media such as television. However, it has largely overlooked the novel form of media represented by contemporary Chinese otome games, which offer an idealized digital environment potentially more appealing to players with insecure attachment styles. Moreover, previous studies have not sufficiently differentiated between general parasocial interactions and the specific nuances of parasocial romantic relationships unique to romantic video games (RVGs). This study seeks to bridge these gaps by examining the psychological underpinnings of Chinese female players' engagement with female-oriented romantic video games. …

Teen girl magazines target adolescents starting as young as twelve years old, but is the content in its pages appropriate and identifiable for that demographic? This study investigated how levels of perceived sexualization changed between 2007, 2012, and 2017, in Seventeen and Teen Vogue magazines. A decrease in perceived sexualization was expected across the ten-year period of time. This window of time reflects the last ten years of publication for both magazines. Research was conducted by creating and utilizing a grading system for non-explicit sexualized …
The Lived Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence For Females In Emerging Adulthood: A Qualitative Study, Laurel Dobkin M.S.
The Lived Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence For Females In Emerging Adulthood: A Qualitative Study, Laurel Dobkin M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Emerging adulthood is the developmental period between ages 18 to 25 where individuals begin to explore their worldviews and develop intimate relationships. This period is important for developing a sense of identity and self (Arnett, 2000, 2014). During this period, negative events or relationships, such as intimate partner violence (IPV), may have detrimental effects (Erikson, 1968; Barreto & Frazier, 2012). While literature suggests that IPV has high rates and negative consequences in emerging adulthood (Bhattacharjee & Gopal, 2022; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024; Shen & Kusunoki, 2019), there is little research on the subjective experience of females …
