First- And Second-Generation Immigrant Emerging Adults’ Career Aspirations, Laura A. Botros Jan 2026

First- And Second-Generation Immigrant Emerging Adults’ Career Aspirations, Laura A. Botros

Theses and Dissertations

Despite first- and second-generation immigrants making up 19.6% of the U.S. workforce (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024), research exploring their career aspirations is scarce. Studies show that individuals’ cultural backgrounds significantly shape first- and second-generation immigrants' career aspirations, values, and professional goals (Kao, 2004; Polenova et al., 2017). The purpose of the study is to examine how first- and second-generation immigrant emerging adults' cultural backgrounds inform their career aspirations. I utilized a qualitative approach by asking participants about their cultural background, career aspirations, and what influenced their career aspirations. Interviews and a cognitive map activity were conducted to investigate …

"I Didn't Teach It Again Because It Wasn't Worth It": How Grades 6-12 English Language Arts Teachers Select Texts And Navigate The Obstacles That Impede Them, Steve Poggendorf

Theses and Dissertations

Classroom texts not only function as tools through which teachers can build curricula, but they can also engage and empower learners. Despite the importance of engaging texts in the classroom, teachers encounter obstacles, both social and institutional, that impede their ability to select the texts they believe will best foster student engagement and empowerment. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate how teachers make text selections, as well as the nature of the obstacles that stand in the way of teachers who hope to inspire and engage their students through lessons built around texts of their choosing. The …

New Era Of Academic Advising: Integration Of Artificial Intelligence Within Academic Advising By, Rachel Elaine Schmitz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Academic advising is a critical component of student success, directly impacting institutional retention, GPA, and student autonomy. This thesis explores the transition of this profession into my proposed fifth era characterized by the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a supportive tool, rather than a replacement, for human connection. Grounded in Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory (IRT), this study examines advisors’ perception of how advanced technology can impact the interpersonal process between students and advisors. A qualitative methodology was used, consisting of seven (N = 7) semi-structured interviews with professional advisors at South Dakota State University. Thematic analysis revealed that AI …

The Stored Communications Act At 40: Re-Examining Ecs And Rcs In The Age Of Ai, Shanzay Pervaiz

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

Shanzay Pervaiz, Senior Legal Researcher, examines the Stored Communications Act (SCA) almost forty years after its enactment, focusing on how its core definitions of “electronic communication service” (ECS) and “remote computing service” (RCS) play a central role in regulating domestic and global government access to data. The definitions still shape key U.S. authorities such as FISA Section 702, the CLOUD Act, and international instruments governing law enforcement access to data, including the Budapest Convention and the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime. The paper also looks at the legislative history of the SCA, how U.S. courts define ECS and RCS, and …

Curriculum, Assessment, & Learning Materials Lab Renovation: A Space For Pre-Service Teachers, Joanna L. Neel Dr., Vandy C. Dubre Mrs.

Presentations and Publications

Pre-service teachers increasingly require access to current instructional materials, test-preparation resources, and hands-on manipulatives to meet rising state expectations and certification demands. This article presents a case study of the multi-year renovation of a School of Education resource room at a mid-sized regional university in the south-central United States. Through a sustained partnership between an Education Faculty member and the Education Librarian, the space evolved from a cluttered storage area into a structured, student-centered Curriculum, Assessment, and Learning Materials Lab. The narrative outlines the historical context, redesign process, cataloging system development, collection weeding, student worker training, and ongoing assessment plans. …

The Impacts Of Wing-Flashing By Northern Mockingbirds On Foraging, Parental Care, And Reproductive Success, Anna Reece Starman Jan 2026

The Impacts Of Wing-Flashing By Northern Mockingbirds On Foraging, Parental Care, And Reproductive Success, Anna Reece Starman

Undergraduate Research Awards

Foraging efficiency may be enhanced by flashing patches of white wing and tail feathers and has been documented in several avian species. Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos, NOMO) exhibit this “wing-flashing” (WF) behavior while foraging, during displays, and in response to predators. In NOMOs, WF has been hypothesized to increase foraging success, but previous findings are inconclusive. To further investigate the biological role(s) of WF behavior in NOMOs, the ventral surface of white primary feathers of male NOMOs were artificially darkened and the foraging and provisioning rates of undarkened (control) males and their mates were compared. While foraging, undarkened males performed …

Exploring The Ephemeral: California’S Light And Space Artists, Shasta Power

Undergraduate Research Awards

Advancements in technology during the 20th and 21st centuries have allowed for new forms of art to be created, and new mediums to be explored— evidenced by the Light and Space Movement which emerged out of Southern California in the 1960s. Artists of this movement occupied a unique position within the larger scene of art history at the time; they were at the center of political turmoil and technological revolution, working in the same spaces and at times even alongside the engineers and psychologists interested in space: both outer and inner. Mary Corse, a painter, Fred Eversley, a sculptor, and …

Navigating The Market: Challenges And Success Factors For Independent Wedding And Event Planning Businesses In The United States, Madeleine Castanon Jan 2026

Navigating The Market: Challenges And Success Factors For Independent Wedding And Event Planning Businesses In The United States, Madeleine Castanon

Hospitality Student Publications

Wedding and event planning is a growing part of the hospitality industry in the United States. It brings in more than five billion dollars each year and supports thousands of small business owners. Even so, independent planners do not get much attention in academic research. Most studies on small businesses do not focus on the specific problems that event planners face. This paper looks at those challenges and what helps planners succeed. The research method used is a review of existing literature on topics like cash flow, seasonal businesses, vendor relationships, and social media marketing. The main finding is that …

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are acid-fast bacilli that trigger granuloma formation, a hallmark immune response aimed at containing infection. While the biology of Mtb granulomas has been widely investigated, far less is known about granulomas caused by NTM infection, despite the increasing prevalence and clinical challenge of NTM cases worldwide. Because granulomas influence infection control, pathology, and treatment response, understanding their cellular organization and signaling is critical to improving therapeutic strategies. Therefore, we characterized granulomas formed following infection of rhesus macaques with Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH) and compared them to granulomas from cynomolgus macaques infected with …

From Couriers To City Dwellers: The Changing Human-Pigeon Relationship, Mallory C. Peterson

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Their coos echo off the walls of skyscrapers and their wings beat faster than the cadence of footsteps. Whether dodging cars or pecking at food scraps, pigeons are a constant character of urban environments. Their unique history has allowed them to raise their young under bridges and on windowsills. Pigeons and humans are inextricably intertwined, to the joy and dismay of many. Once celebrated as couriers, pigeons carried messages of war, love, and survival across vast distances, shaping human connection and history. Today, they are more often dismissed as pests, their presence flattened into the city noise.

Array Signal Processing And Machine Learning In 5g/6g Networks, Roopesh Kumar Polaganga

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation investigates advanced methodologies in Array Signal Processing (ASP) and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance the performance, efficiency, and intelligence of next-generation wireless networks, with a primary focus on 5G and emerging 6G systems. As wireless networks face rapid traffic growth, increasingly heterogeneous service requirements, and more complex propagation environments, conventional design and optimization approaches become insufficient to meet evolving demands in reliability, capacity, spectral efficiency, and energy efficiency. On the network intelligence side, this work develops data-driven frameworks for causal discovery, scheduler enhancement, session-duration prediction, and Radio Resource Control (RRC) state optimization using real-world telecommunication network data. Put Me In, Coach: Enhancing Foundational Lawyering Skills Across The Curriculum With Neurodivergent Law Students In Mind, Erica M. Lux

Mitchell Hamline Law Review

As more adults discover that they are neurodivergent, the law student population is likely to be no different, and legal education must adapt to support the skill development needs of neurodivergent students as they prepare to enter the profession. Neurodivergence is a non-medical term that refers to a variety of conditions resulting from changes to a person’s brain structure and function. More commonly, academic discussions around neurodivergence focus on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—both of which have not been properly diagnosed over the past several decades. However, neurodivergence also incorporates anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), …

Combating Forced Labor: Why Trade Laws Work Better, Julia Steggerda-Corey Jan 2026

Combating Forced Labor: Why Trade Laws Work Better, Julia Steggerda-Corey

Mitchell Hamline Law Review

Nearly twenty-eight million people across the globe are coerced into involuntary work or service. This forced labor occurs in virtually every industry and at every stage of supply chains and goods production. Nation-states have sought to address this epidemic for decades through anti-slavery, trade, and human rights laws. These mechanisms have largely failed and forced labor in the supply chain remains an underpin-ning of modern capitalism. To be effective, legal mechanisms must in-centivize businesses to make strategic decisions that bring about an end to forced labor. This Article is the first to analyze the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence …

Navigating Role Conflict: Implications For Service Sabotage In Customer Success Management, Amit Mahimkar, John Hadjimarcou, Edward Ramirez

Faculty Publications – Marketing

Drawing on the self-determination, conservation of resources, and self-regulation theories, this research examines the impact of role conflict faced by customer success managers (CSMs) in regard to service sabotage through a structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis. Results from testing a moderated mediation model provide support for the relationship between this role-stressor and service sabotage, the mediating effects of job dissatisfaction on this relationship, and the moderating effects of the respondent's emotional intelligence on the mediated relationship. As such, business-to-business (B2B) suppliers should develop strategies to mitigate role conflict faced by CSMs by aligning internal teams to prevent excessive task delegation …

Preventing Teen Pregnancy Through Expanded Contraceptive Access In Mccreary County, Kentucky, Dacey B. Chitwood Jan 2026

Preventing Teen Pregnancy Through Expanded Contraceptive Access In Mccreary County, Kentucky, Dacey B. Chitwood

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

This capstone project proposes a school-based Condom Availability Program to reduce teen pregnancy risk by expanding discreet contraceptive access for adolescents in McCreary County, Kentucky. Teen pregnancy remains a persistent public health concern in rural communities where stigma, privacy concerns, transportation barriers, and limited healthcare access can prevent adolescents from obtaining reproductive health resources. McCreary County faces elevated teen birth rates, socioeconomic disadvantage, and limited maternal healthcare infrastructure, making teen pregnancy prevention an important local priority. The proposed program would place free latex and non-latex condoms in student restrooms at McCreary Central High School, with QR-code-linked information connecting students to …

Community Place Attachment As A Significant Correlate Of Motivation To Change Substance Use Behavior Among Adults Who Inject Drugs In Rural U.S., Janet K. Otachi, Shawndaya S. Thrasher, Keith J. Watts, Juma S. Mwenda, Hilary L. Surratt

Social Work Faculty Publications

Introduction: While motivation is critical for substance use disorder (SUD) recovery, many individuals fail to engage in treatment. The need to belong is a fundamental human motivation, yet the role of community place attachment (CPA) as a social asset in fostering motivation to change substance use behaviors (MCSUB) among people who inject drugs (PWID) is understudied. This paper examines the effect of CPA on PWIDs’ MCSUB.

Methodology: Cross-sectional data were collected from 350 PWID recruited from syringe service programs in rural Appalachian Kentucky (2018–2021). We used hierarchical multivariable linear regression to assess the association between CPA and MCSUB, controlling for …

"Just Friends:" The Linguistics Of Queerness In Lady Audley's Secret And Carmilla, Kelley A. Peters Jan 2026

"Just Friends:" The Linguistics Of Queerness In Lady Audley's Secret And Carmilla, Kelley A. Peters

English

Many queer studies scholars have debated the legitimacy of queer coding within Victorian literature, such as Marc Milton Ducusin, who wrote Queer Doubles: The Victorian Sensation Novel and English Sexology, and Sharon Marcus, the author of Between Women: Friendship, Desire, and Marriage in Victorian England. These authors analyze real-life and fictional behaviors of those within Victorian England to argue that queerness is present in certain Victorian works. However, these arguments do not adequately address the linguistic significance of the queer coding present in these works, and they specifically ignore the label of “friend” and its many meanings in Victorian …

A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis On The Lived Experiences Of Labor Trafficking Survivors, Paola T. Chavez Reyes

Social Work Theses

Across the globe, an estimated 27.6 million people are in forced labor. Despite this widespread prevalence, labor trafficking (LT) in the United States remains difficult to identify and is often overlooked. This study aims to synthesize LT experiences of survivors and providers accounts at the point of recruitment and during victimization to inform identification efforts. A qualitative interpretive meta-synthesis was conducted using directed content analysis guided by Social Cognition Theory. Peer-reviewed studies documenting LT survivor experiences from 2013-2025 were systematically analyzed to identify the interaction between cognitive processes, environmental influences, and behavioral responses. Across seven studies, the findings reveal that …
