Enforcing International Humanitarian Law Through The Business Responsibility To Respect Human Rights, Tara Van Ho Jan 2026

Enforcing International Humanitarian Law Through The Business Responsibility To Respect Human Rights, Tara Van Ho

Faculty Articles

Insulation produced by the Danish company Rockwool—or its Russian subsidiary—lines thirty-one Russian Navy warships. Though not a weapon, this material is essential to the vessels’ operation. Did Rockwool have a responsibility under international law to stop the transfer of the insulation to the Russian Navy before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine? This article examines the business responsibilities under the 2011 United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (“UNGPs”). In doing so, the article finds that the business responsibility to respect human rights in the UNGPs provides a strong mechanism for enforcing international humanitarian law (“IHL”). However, it requires …

Clemency For Justice Reform: A Restorative Pardon Proposal Using Conditional Pardons, Stephanie A. Clark Jan 2026

Clemency For Justice Reform: A Restorative Pardon Proposal Using Conditional Pardons, Stephanie A. Clark

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

President Donald Trump’s pardons to people convicted for the January 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol intensified the nation’s divisiveness. They also illustrate why proper clemency must be restored and used for its intended purpose to ameliorate injustice under the law. Clemency is not meant to be a “get out of jail free card” solely for family, friends, and political supporters. It is a constitutional mechanism designed to relieve consequences out of step with a criminal offense or to salve broad public hurt. When clemency is misused, it undermines public confidence and the principle that equal opportunity should exist for …

Leadership And Literacy Assessment Systems: A Multi-Case Study Of System Coherence And Assessment Use In Mississippi Elementary Schools, Kristin P. Walters

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

This qualitative embedded multiple-case study examined how school-level literacy leadership shaped the coherence and use of literacy assessment systems in five Mississippi Elementary Schools. Situated within the context of Mississippi’s recent literacy gains and the policy environment emerging from the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, this study explored how literacy leaders guide assessment systems to support coherence between literacy instruction and assessment practice.

Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 25 educators across five elementary schools in different districts. Analysis was conducted using descriptive and values coding organized into an analysis matrix that facilitated within-case and cross-case exploration of patterns in distributed …

Temporal Avoidance By Gray Foxes Reflects Growing Pressure From Expanding Coyotes In The Neotropics, Madison Odenbach Jan 2026

Temporal Avoidance By Gray Foxes Reflects Growing Pressure From Expanding Coyotes In The Neotropics, Madison Odenbach

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are rapidly expanding their range towards South America, potentially threatening the world’s highest canid diversity residing on that continent. A better understanding of their interactions with native species is needed to anticipate potential competitive impacts. In Costa Rica, native gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) likely occupy a similar niche to the coyote newcomer, yet little data exists on their interactions in tropical ecosystems. We hypothesized the two species separate temporally to minimize the potential for competition in our study area, given preliminary data suggesting high spatial overlap (57.1% of coyote-detected sites overlap with fox-detected …

The Irrationality Of Punishing Homelessness, Nice, Julie A. Jan 2026

The Irrationality Of Punishing Homelessness, Nice, Julie A.

Santa Clara Law Review

The Supreme Court upheld the criminalization of public survival by unhoused people in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson in June 2024. This article examines that decision and considers why Grants Pass had not enforced its camping ban against unhoused people when the author visited the city one year later. One important reason is that Oregon had enacted legislation requiring that any camping bans in the state be objectively reasonable considering the totality of circumstances, including the impact on unhoused persons. Given the ongoing lack of shelter in Grants Pass after the Supreme Court’s ruling, the city’s unhoused residents obtained …

Momager Dearest: Why The Kidfluencer Industry Requires Stronger Regulation, Lewis, Annabel Jan 2026

Momager Dearest: Why The Kidfluencer Industry Requires Stronger Regulation, Lewis, Annabel

Santa Clara Law Review

In the last twenty years, social media has undergone a massive transformation. What began as a medium to connect with friends has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry where influencers reign supreme, profiting from their online personas. This opportunity is not limited to those old enough to operate their own accounts.

The recent rise of child influencers, known as “kidfluencers,” enables parents to profit from sharing aspects of their children’s lives on the internet. These accounts are not without benefit. Beyond their financial appeal, kidfluencer accounts can serve as a means for parents to bond with their children and may open …

From Silos To Systems: A Conceptual Framework For Workforce Aligned Oral Health Education, Meghan Bastin Jan 2026

From Silos To Systems: A Conceptual Framework For Workforce Aligned Oral Health Education, Meghan Bastin

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers

In the current U.S. educational system, becoming a dentist follows a few prescriptive pathways.  Learners typically complete an undergraduate degree before entering time-intensive doctoral training.  This results in only 3-4 years of direct professional education embedded within an eight -year process, while learners accumulate significant financial investment in their education.  With the average cost of graduate-level dental education alone exceeding $300,000 and new federal borrowing limits likely to further constrain access, there is an opportunity to explore alternative ways of structuring oral health education.

This poster presents a conceptual, system-level framework that explores a perspective in which oral health education …

Not Dating, Just Doing The Dishes: Reducing Anxiety And Increasing Participation Through Low-Risk Interpersonal Role-Plays., Alison Leah Morris-Neuberger Jan 2026

Not Dating, Just Doing The Dishes: Reducing Anxiety And Increasing Participation Through Low-Risk Interpersonal Role-Plays., Alison Leah Morris-Neuberger

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers

Soon after last semester began, I found myself in a classroom where students seemed disengaged and often unwilling to participate in open class discussion. I decided to ask students for feedback on how I could do better. What I heard was something I had not fully considered before. Many students, primarily Gen Z, asked that I use more examples centered on roommates. Several shared that they did not have experience with romantic relationships or professional work environments, but there was one common thread among them - they all had roommates. Talking about a roommate felt much lower stakes than talking …

Noncognitive Predictors Of Academic Performance In Undergraduate Allied Health Professionals Students, Keleigh Pershina, Michael Mehall, Alexandra Hollo Jan 2026

Noncognitive Predictors Of Academic Performance In Undergraduate Allied Health Professionals Students, Keleigh Pershina, Michael Mehall, Alexandra Hollo

2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers

Undergraduate students in allied health professions face substantial academic, clinical, and personal demands that may affect academic performance and attainment of professional goals. Noncognitive factors such as stress, coping, and burnout have been identified as important contributors to academic outcomes in health professions education; however, empirical work examining these variables has yielded conflicting results. To identify potential student supports specific to undergraduate students within a land grant, rural serving institution in Appalachia, we conducted a survey to ask how personal factors such as burnout, stress, depression, and coping skills would predict academic success. A sample of 19 students complete a …

The Impact Of Home Birth Integration On Maternal-Neonatal Outcomes And Patient Satisfaction: An Integrative Review, Mary E. Hillaker, Jennifer K. Jacobitz

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Home birth is a safe option for low-risk populations. As awareness of home birth increases, so do the families choosing home birth. Governing bodies recommend well integrated maternal health systems, yet the impact of level of integration on perinatal outcomes and patient satisfaction has not been specifically examined. The purpose of this integrative review is to identify the impact home birth integration has on maternal and neonatal outcomes, patient satisfaction, and how communities can improve their integration level.
Methods: A keyword search of current literature was conducted using CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus databases. An additional hand search of 2 …

Why Do Communities Build Bridges? Social Studies: 5e Model Inquiry Lesson Plan, Ryanna Thorson Jan 2026

Why Do Communities Build Bridges? Social Studies: 5e Model Inquiry Lesson Plan, Ryanna Thorson

OER Materials

This lesson plan presents a 5E inquiry-based social studies lesson designed for 5th-grade students to explore the compelling question, “How does a bridge change a community?” Through the analysis of primary sources (including historical photographs, maps, engineering diagrams), students investigate how bridges influence transportation, access, safety, and community development. The lesson integrates vocabulary supports, structured observation, and literacy connections to help students evaluate the significance of human-made structures in shaping community life. Grounded in constructivist learning theory, this word demonstrates how inquiry and evidence-based reasoning can deepen students’ understanding of social studies concepts.

Integrating Domain Knowledge And Machine Learning In Rice Cultivation: A Case Study Of Algeria, Sara Faruqui, Jenna M. Handal, Navi Gill Dhillon

Bioinformatics

Research has highlighted Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a promising solution to mitigate the threat of food insecurity. Rice, a staple in the global diet, is particularly vulnerable to heat stress caused by climate change. The challenges of climate change, population growth, and increased famine risk may be alleviated through the implementation of AI models in rice cultivation. For decades, agricultural workers have faced the dilemma of needing to increase crop yields while dealing with dwindling resources and the need for more efficient practices. AI models, however, are limited by the quality and scope of the data they receive. Integrating domain …

Revolution Or Restoration? Historiographical Perspectives On The Glorious Revolution And The Evolution Of English Constitutionalism, Utku Özgür Jan 2026

Revolution Or Restoration? Historiographical Perspectives On The Glorious Revolution And The Evolution Of English Constitutionalism, Utku Özgür

2026 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

This paper examines how historians have interpreted the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89 and asks whether it should be understood as a true modern revolution or as a conservative restoration. Rather than offering a narrative account of events, it traces three major historiographical frameworks through which scholars have analyzed the Revolution: legal, fiscal, and political. The legal interpretation shows how concepts such as abdication, social contract, trust, and consent allowed Parliament to frame the removal of James II as a constitutional act rather than an act of rebellion. The fiscal interpretation emphasizes the post-1688 transformation of public credit, parliamentary control over …

Equitable Disaster Relief In Western Alaska: Rebuilding The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta After Typhoon Halong, Emma Knapp Jan 2026

Equitable Disaster Relief In Western Alaska: Rebuilding The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta After Typhoon Halong, Emma Knapp

2026 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

This zine, created for Professor Kareem Collie's Design & Equity seminar at The Hive, examines disaster relief efforts in Alaska's Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta following the landfall of ex-Typhoon Halong on October 12th, 2025. Halong displaced over 1,600 people in nearly fifty Alaska Native communities. The project combines journalistic reporting from local Alaskan news sources with library resources that grounded the research in anti-colonial and environmental justice frameworks. This zine uses an equity-driven lens to deconstruct how colonial policies continue to shape disparate impacts of climate change. It also illuminates how complex systems of oppression emerge over time. Overall, the decolonization of …

Journal Articles: College of Nursing

BACKGROUND: American Indian (AI) persons with advanced cancer (PwAC) in South Dakota have seen increased rates of cancer incidence and mortality compared to national rates. These inequities are driven by social determinants of health. Providing early palliative care is highly important for rural PwAC but is sparsely available in rural South Dakota.

OBJECTIVE: To explore cancer care experiences and patient symptoms and caregiver burden among AI and rural PwAC, and their family caregivers (FCGs), to understand the barriers and opportunities for adapting an early palliative care intervention.

DESIGN: Descriptive study design reporting on the qualitative and quantitative data collected.

METHODS: …
