Slow Education, Sit Spot, And Holistic Well-Being: A Narrative Case Study In Secondary Science Education, Steph Dean, Jim Lane, Paul Bocko, Albert Gilbert, Devan A. Jones

Publications

The demands of a test-dominant education system point towards the need for students to have opportunities for unhurried learning engagements, a movement known as slow education. The purpose of this study was to examine the long-term influence of Sit Spot–a recurrent, structured time to reflect outdoors–on students’ holistic well-being. Using a narrative case study approach, we interviewed a secondary field ecology teacher and seven of his former students to understand the impact of high school Sit Spot experiences during a semester-long science class. Three primary outcomes emerged: (1) enduring impact on the whole person, (2) engagement with affect, and (3) …

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy Feb 2026

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy

Science of Reading

Indiana is one of a few states to enact a high stakes literacy test in third grade, the IREAD-3 test. High stakes testing is often a useful way to ensure a particular level of academic proficiency is met to allow students to succeed in a new setting, like college, or leave high school with desired skills. However, the requirement to automatically retain third graders who do not pass the IREAD-3 test without additional information or considerations, is not supported by research (AERA, 2000). These data highlight the critical need for educators and administrators to understand high-stakes standardized tests, as they …

Recommendations For Developing A Regulatory Sandbox And A Comprehensive Legal Framework For Fintech In Vietnam - Part I, Sue M. Altmeyer, Phan Dang Hai

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Fintech, a product of the 4.0 revolution, has experienced rapid growth in Vietnam, attracting significant attention from investors and government agencies. In encouraging innovation, the authors write, the need for a practical legal framework to regulate fintech activities has become a critical issue. The authors believe that this new legal framework should include a regulatory sandbox, which would allow fintech startups to test their products in a controlled environment, helping to mitigate risks, foster creativity, and enhance regulatory oversight. This two-part article discusses challenges in creating and implementing a regulatory sandbox and provides recommendations for overcoming these hurdles. This first …

The Free Exercise Of Religion As A Privilege, Kyron J. Huigens Feb 2026

The Free Exercise Of Religion As A Privilege, Kyron J. Huigens

Articles

In the span of a decade, the Supreme Court has restructured the Free Exercise Clause entirely. It has removed the counterweight of disestablishment; it has sought parity between religion and secularity by means of strict scrutiny analysis turning on a principle of nondiscrimination; and it has opened the way to a general exemption from secular law for the faithful by ceding the question of what counts as an exercise of religion to the faithful themselves. This Article proposes reading the free exercise of religion as a privilege in response to these changes. This privilege stands against secular law in the …

Perceptions Of Educational Leaders About Creating E-Portfolios As Part Of A Leadership Upskilling Program, Zeina Hojeij, Areej Elsayary

All Works

The effectiveness of e-portfolios in supporting educator professional development (PD) remains uncertain, particularly in demonstrating leadership skills through reflections and perceptions. This study investigates the utility of e-portfolios by examining the perspectives of educational leaders within a K-12 setting in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The study involved 17 participants who completed an upskilling program, creating digital portfolios as part of their training. Additionally, 10 participants engaged in semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed three primary themes: genuine professional leadership growth, continuous PD, and an enhanced understanding of the student learning experience. The creation of e-portfolios not only fostered authentic PD …

The Effect Of Family Ownership On Overall, Firm-Level, And Market-Level Corporate Transparency, Euikyu Choi, Jongmoo Jay Choi, Moo Sung Kim Feb 2026

The Effect Of Family Ownership On Overall, Firm-Level, And Market-Level Corporate Transparency, Euikyu Choi, Jongmoo Jay Choi, Moo Sung Kim

All Works

We examine how family ownership shapes overall corporate transparency by analyzing both firm-level and market-level transparency. Drawing on data from Korean-listed companies between 2001 and 2007, we construct separate indices measuring voluntary disclosure by firms, information quality as assessed by market participants, and overall transparency combining both dimensions. Our analysis uncovers a striking paradox: while family ownership positively correlates with firm-initiated disclosure efforts, it negatively relates to market participants’ assessment of information quality. These opposing forces result in no significant relationship between family ownership and aggregate transparency. However, when we partition our sample by ownership levels, firms with family stakes …

“Language Learners As Ethnographers: A Case Study On A Pedagogical Approach To Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence”, Nihal El-Gameel

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the extensive theoretical models and frameworks for Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), pedagogical approaches to teaching culture remain underexplored. This study examined the effectiveness of integrating a pedagogical framework—the OSEE framework developed by Deardorff (2000)—within a language classroom context. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through audio-recorded reflections, a questionnaire, an interview, and a final project video presentation in a single-case study design. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s (2014) model of qualitative analysis, employing a funneling approach tailored to each research question: the first applied Chen and Starosta’s ICC model (1996;1999) the second used deductive thematic analysis to …

Species-Dependent Gazing Behavior Of Emotional Facial Expressions In Dogs (Canis Familiaris) And Adult Humans (Homo Sapiens)., Heini Törnqvist, Gray S. Atherton, Liam Cross, Sanni Somppi, Jarkko Hautala, Miiamaaria V. Kujala

School of Psychology

Emotional expressions play an important part in social communication of dogs and humans, but comparative studies between dogs and humans are rare. In addition, little is known about how emotions are perceived across species and how attention is divided among different parts of faces. Here, we compared the gazing behavior of dogs and adult humans toward emotional dog and human facial expressions. Dogs mostly gazed at the eye and nose areas, whereas the humans’ focus also included the mouth area. The gazing behavior of both species was affected by the facial expressions and species presented, and they gazed at emotional …

Medical Device Dangers: Choosing Ignorance In The Courts And At The Fda, George Horvath Feb 2026

Medical Device Dangers: Choosing Ignorance In The Courts And At The Fda, George Horvath

William & Mary Law Review

Medical devices save lives and improve well-being but have caused as many as 83,000 deaths and 1.7 million injuries in a recent decade. Decisions of critical importance—patients’ decisions whether to have a device implanted, doctors’ decisions about which device to use, insurers’ decisions whether to reimburse for those devices—depend on information about risk that is provided by manufacturers. But producing this information is costly. Injured patients, through private lawsuits under state products liability theories, can incentivize device manufacturers to incur these costs and to produce and disclose information about device risk. Unfortunately, courts are making it increasingly unlikely that this …

Skrmetti And The Problem Of Incidental Intent, Martin Katz Feb 2026

Skrmetti And The Problem Of Incidental Intent, Martin Katz

William & Mary Law Review

The modern Supreme Court has defined “discriminatory intent” as a strict-liability concept. It does not matter why the government sorts people by a protected characteristic, such as race or sex; it matters only that the government does sort people by such a characteristic. This principle is the key holding of affirmative-action cases, such as Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College. Yet, in the recent case United States v. Skrmetti, the Court seemed to focus not on the question of whether the government sorted people by sex (it did), but on the question …

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Licochalcone A (LCA) is a characteristic compound in licorice Glycyrrhiza inflata and is widely utilized in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. However, the biosynthetic pathway and regulatory mechanisms of LCA remain poorly understood. In this study, we first found the accumulation of LCA is induced by methyl jasmonate (MeJA). Given that MYB transcriptional factors are well-documented as key regulators of flavonoid biosynthesis, we identified a total of 147 GiR2R3-MYB genes in G. inflata, which were classified into 28 subgroups. The chromosome distributions, sequence characteristics, gene structures, duplication events and cis-acting elements were also investigated. Through integrated analysis of GiR2R3-MYBs expression patterns …

Post-Translational Control Of Biotic Stress-Related Nicotine Biosynthesis By A Map Kinase Signaling Cascade, Yan Zhou, Yongliang Liu, Ruiqing Lyu, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Xueyi Sui, Xin Hou, Sitakanta Pattanaik, Ling Yuan

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

The evolutionarily conserved mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades relay extracellular signals into cells, triggering a variety of cellular responses. We previously revealed NtMPK4 as a positive regulator of nicotine biosynthesis; however, its upstream regulation remains unclear. Here, we characterized a MAPK cascade, comprising NtMEKK1b, NtMPKK2a, and NtMPK4, that promotes nicotine biosynthesis. This signaling module transduces external cues, including jasmonate and pathogen elicitors such as flg22, into post-translational modifications that enhance transcriptional activity and pathway gene expression. NtMPKK2a physically interacts with and phosphorylates NtMPK4 in vivo, confirming its role as an upstream kinase. RNAi-mediated silencing of NtMPKK2a significantly reduced the expression …

Media Use And Pro-Equality Attitudes Toward Women As Leaders, Mark Tremayne, Dustin Harp, Ariana Hernandez Feb 2026

Media Use And Pro-Equality Attitudes Toward Women As Leaders, Mark Tremayne, Dustin Harp, Ariana Hernandez

Communication Faculty Publications

This study examines how Americans’ media use corresponds with attitudes toward women as leaders. We surveyed 1,030 adults and measured pro-equality attitudes using a 17-item index. Newspaper reading and streaming video use were positively associated with pro-equality views, while time spent on social media (particularly Facebook and X) showed small negative associations. Participants who used newspapers for political content reported higher pro-equality scores than non-users, whereas those who used X for politics reported lower scores. The findings suggest that media habits and political ideology are connected to gender attitudes.

The Impacts Of Political Leaders’ Social Capital On Policy Success: The Case Of Local Food Systems, In Hae Noh, Beomgeun Cho, April M. Roggio, Luis F. Luna-Reyes

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Network approaches to collaborative leadership suggest that local leaders’ success depends on activities that connect their organization to diverse stakeholders and resources. Drawing on the literature on managerial networking and a mixed-methods approach that includes 38 semi-structured interviews and a survey of 185 New York State municipal leaders, we explore the impact of leaders’ networking efforts on food access and security in their communities. We hypothesize that different forms of leaders’ social capital (bridging, bonding, and linking) has an impact on policy success. Our results suggest that only bridging social capital has an impact on food access. We conclude with …
