Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Current clinical practice guidelines support the long-term use of pharmacotherapy for obesity treatment. Historically, phentermine has been one of the most prescribed obesity medications (OMs), however, its long-term efficacy and safety have never been evaluated in a randomized trial as its market approval predates such requirements. Here we describe the design, rationale, and baseline characteristics for a 24-month, double-blind, randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy, cardiovascular risk, and safety of phentermine in adults with overweight or obesity.

Methods: This multicenter trial will compare outcomes among participants randomized to phentermine 24 mg daily versus placebo for 24 months. All participants …

The Importance Of International Exchange In A Time Of Worldwide Economic And Political Crisis And Change, David Anshen Feb 2026

The Importance Of International Exchange In A Time Of Worldwide Economic And Political Crisis And Change, David Anshen

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

This paper argues that international scholarly and cultural exchange has become especially vital in the context of intensifying global economic, political, ecological, and social crises. Drawing on Marxist theory, contemporary political realities in the United States and South Asia, and examples from world literature, the article examines how global capitalism both deepens human suffering and creates new possibilities for solidarity and resistance. Through reflections on immigration, political violence, ecological collapse, and the marginalization of the humanities, the paper highlights the role of international dialogue- facilitated by digital technologies and cross-cultural engagement- as a necessary counterforce to dehumanization and fragmentation. Literary …

Exploring The Value Of International Research Experience For Leadership Development, Lisa Luken Feb 2026

Exploring The Value Of International Research Experience For Leadership Development, Lisa Luken

Leadership Studies

The world has become more complex and interconnected, with challenges that span countries and disciplines. To navigate these challenges, individuals are needed who are equipped with skills and competencies to lead in cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary environments. These leadership skills and competencies can be developed through participation in experiential learning programs. However, the impact of international research-based programs remains unexplored. This is a qualitative, phenomenological study within a bounded case that explored the lived experiences of students who participated in an international graduate student research program from a leadership development perspective. Mezirow’s (1978a) transformative learning theory was utilized as a theoretical framework …

Analysis Method Of Impact Of Complex Electromagnetic Signals On Measurement Errors In Single-Phase Electric Energy Meters, Hongtao Shen, Chong Li, Hao Wang, Juchuan Guo, Penghe Zhang, Cong Wang

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

In complex electromagnetic environments, the diverse array of electromagnetic interference signals with varying modulation schemes leads to degraded performance in single-phase electric energy meters. With the random and dynamic characteristics of complex electromagnetic signals, a parametric model is established for m-sequence dynamic test signals. Subsequently, a structured measurement model for single-phase electric energy meters and a mathematical model for the impact of electromagnetic signals on single-phase electric energy meter errors are developed. The impact of electromagnetic signals on random interference in electric energy meters is then simulated. Finally, through simulation and experimental tests, the impacts of electromagnetic signals on measurement …

The Poly Problem In Zoning: Redefining "Family" For A Changing Society, Aric K. Short, Tanya Pierce Feb 2026

The Poly Problem In Zoning: Redefining "Family" For A Changing Society, Aric K. Short, Tanya Pierce

Faculty Scholarship

Single-family zoning has long dictated not only where people may live but also with whom. Although extensively critiqued for perpetuating racial and economic exclusion, these laws also privilege relationships defined by blood, marriage, or adoption and marginalize nontraditional families. This Article focuses on a particularly overlooked group: polyamorous families who often face legal uncertainty, social exclusion, and housing discrimination due to restrictive zoning definitions of “family.”

As polyamory gains cultural visibility and increasing legal recognition—through West 49th Street, LLC v. O’Neill and municipal reforms in cities like Somerville and Cambridge—now is the time to examine zoningÊs role in reinforcing outdated …

Transforming Blood Management Systems In Developing Countries Through Technological And Artificial Intelligence-Driven Innovations, Sandeep Bhargava, Shaun Aaron Abram, Srividhya Ragavan Feb 2026

Transforming Blood Management Systems In Developing Countries Through Technological And Artificial Intelligence-Driven Innovations, Sandeep Bhargava, Shaun Aaron Abram, Srividhya Ragavan

Faculty Scholarship

It is critical to ensure the safe and quality supply of blood among various stakeholders; however, this remains a significant challenge in today’s world, especially in developing countries. These countries face severe problems, including blood shortages, fragmented regulatory frameworks, and inconsistent quality control measures. To tackle these challenges, countries like India are trying to implement the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and its derivative platforms to transform blood collection, testing, storage, and distribution by enabling interoperability, real-time compliance monitoring, automated donor screening, optimized inventory management, and advanced component separation. The article argues that developing countries must adopt both regulatory reform …

Light reprocessed by dust grains emitting in the infrared enables the study of the physics at play in dusty embedded regions, where ultraviolet and optical wavelengths are attenuated. Infrared telescopes such as JWST have made it possible to study the earliest feedback phases, when stars are shielded by cocoons of gas and dust. Comprehending this phase is crucial for unravelling the effects of feedback from young stars that leads to their emergence and the dispersal of their host molecular clouds. Here we show that the transition from the embedded to the exposed phase of star formation is short (< 4 Myr) and sometimes almost absent (< 1 Myr) across a sample of 37 nearby star-forming galaxies covering a wide range of morphologies, from massive barred spirals to irregular dwarfs. The short duration of the dust-clearing timescales suggests a predominant role of pre-supernova feedback mechanisms in revealing newborn stars, confirming previous results on smaller samples and allowing, for the first time, a statistical analysis of their dependencies. We find that the timescales associated with mid-infrared emission at 21 μm, tracing a dust-embedded feedback phase, are controlled by a complex interplay between giant molecular cloud properties (masses and velocity dispersions) and galaxy morphology. We report relatively longer durations of the embedded phase of star formation in barred spiral galaxies, while this phase is significantly reduced in low-mass irregular dwarf galaxies. We discuss tentative trends with gas-phase metallicity, which may favor faster cloud dispersal at low metallicities.

Cybersecurity Risk Shifting, Deborah R. Farringer Feb 2026

Cybersecurity Risk Shifting, Deborah R. Farringer

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The Change Healthcare cyberattack of 2024 paralyzed the health care system for months, creating an exceedingly far reaching and devastating impact on providers, suppliers, and patients across the country. While the scope of the attack was unprecedented, the cyberattack itself was not new, unique, or isolated. Indeed, this attack came just months after the close of a year in which the United States’ Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (OCR) recorded the highest number of reported breaches of protected health information and the highest number of breached records. With a medical record fetching nearly four times …
