Emerging Services For The Visually Impaired In Academic Libraries, Noor Abutayeh, Berta García-Orosa Dec 2021

Emerging Services For The Visually Impaired In Academic Libraries, Noor Abutayeh, Berta García-Orosa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study sought to investigate access services that are presented to visually impaired users in academic libraries. There is a clear lack of digital resources and assistive technology in serving disabled/blind users in both libraries. Based on Mann-Whitney U-test results and p-value, there were similarities in website and databases accessibility and significant differences in providing some types of digital materials to visually impaired users. It is recommended that libraries have to continually adapt to the constantly turning cycles of technology in terms of major technology trends such as open-source software, mobile technology, and voice-activated technology. The world needs to …

The different locations of New York, the Hague, Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi were chosen over a time period of fifty years with New York, the first permanent location, chosen in 1946, and Nairobi, the most recent addition, finalized in 1996. The locations were not chosen purely because of monetary concerns but because they met specific qualifications set …

Art And Exceptionality: Addressing Art Fear And Fear Of Difference In An Introductory Art Course, Arthur Hochman, Kelli J. Esteves

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

University educators designed and co-taught a course which involved collaborative artmaking and learning with a community-based arts organization that serves individuals with disabilities. Their goal was to help university students examine the potential of art and how it applies to their personal and professional lives. They sought to better understand how to nurture a feeling of artistic agency in undergraduate students who do not define themselves as artists. Educators found that students benefited from an exploration of art fear through an inclusive approach to art creation.

Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring: A Patient Empowerment Project, Alison Cusmano Dec 2021

Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring: A Patient Empowerment Project, Alison Cusmano

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Hypertension is a public health issue estimated to affect 112 million adults by 2030. Primary care patients in an outpatient clinic in Southern California with elevated blood pressure readings in the office did not have an organized system for close follow-up. The purpose of this evidence-based project (EBP) was to educate patients on self-measured blood pressure monitoring (SMBP), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), diet interventions, and healthy weight loss to improve hypertension rates. Through these interventions, patients developed an understanding of their systolic and diastolic blood pressure goals. Nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and licensed vocational nurses screened for high …

The admiration of killers is a trait found in numerous murderers, who claimed they felt inspired to murder from previous attacks. The True Crime Community is an online community with a deep fascination and possible obsession with criminal behavior. Community members include those who display admiration for killers and those who commit copycat crimes. University Faculty Experiences: Workplace And Personal Stress, Stress Management, And Coping, Whitney Matthews Gass Dec 2021

University Faculty Experiences: Workplace And Personal Stress, Stress Management, And Coping, Whitney Matthews Gass

Theses and Dissertations

University faculty have work responsibilities and duties that encompass teaching, research (scholarship), and service and experience pressure from administrators, students, institutions, and disciplines. They also have expectations placed on them outside of their institutions by their families, peers, and communities. A gap exists in the literature regarding the workplace and personal stressors that university faculty experience including the coping strategies they employ to manage stress. This qualitative study utilized a general strain theory framework for guidance and modified informal conversational interviews with University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UA Little Rock) faculty. Interview questions were about the lived workplace and …

The Effect Of Reciprocal Electrical Stimulation On Handgrip And Pinch Grip Strength In Spastic Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy Child, Abeer El Sayed Hamed, Shymaa Mahmoud Matty, Taher Salah El-Din Taha Dec 2021

The Effect Of Reciprocal Electrical Stimulation On Handgrip And Pinch Grip Strength In Spastic Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy Child, Abeer El Sayed Hamed, Shymaa Mahmoud Matty, Taher Salah El-Din Taha

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background In hemiplegic spastic cerebral palsy (CP) patients, the affected hand can present with a combination of spasticity, weakness, and dystonia. Electrical stimulation is a part of a physical therapy program that is used for improving hand function, and one of the methods of electrical stimulation is reciprocal electrical stimulation (RES). RES mimics the neuromuscular-stimulation procedure for alternate activation of agonist and antagonist muscle groups. Also, RES has been reported to decrease the cortical excitability of the spastic muscle and to improve neural drive through stimulation of sensory receptors and sensory neurons of agonist and antagonist muscles. Our study aims …

Posterior Tympanotomy Versus Posterior Atticotomy In Creating Well-Ventilated Middle Ear Cleft Pros And Cons, Essam F. Abdelfattah, Wael A. Alzami Dec 2021

Posterior Tympanotomy Versus Posterior Atticotomy In Creating Well-Ventilated Middle Ear Cleft Pros And Cons, Essam F. Abdelfattah, Wael A. Alzami

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background Cortical mastoidectomy is considered a cornerstone step in the surgical management of noncholesteatomatous chronic suppurative otitis media. It comprises the canal wall-up technique, preserving the posterior and superior bony canal walls. The goal of cortical mastoidectomy is mainly to ventilate the middle ear cleft besides eradication of diseased mastoid air cells. The ventilation of the middle ear cleft has no way except through the aditus ad antrum and patent epitympanic diaphragm besides well-functioning Eustachian tube. This way of ventilation is usually affected in chronic infected ears by edematous and polypoid mucosa, leading to its obstruction. Traditional practice used to …

Perceptions Of A Virtual Interview Exercise For Ophthalmology Residency Applicants, Bilal Ahmed, Victoria Ly, Ankur Parikh, Arjun Watane, Sanah Aslam, Anjalee Choudhury, Benjamin Lin, Yoshihiro Yonekawa, Jayanth Sridhar

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology

Abstract

Importance In-person interviews have traditionally been considered a crucial component of the residency application process. Virtual interviews (VIs) became the standard format for the 2020 to 2021 application cycle due to the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. VIs offer a new perspective and challenge to this process which warrants unique considerations and further understanding of effects on applicants.

Objective This study aimed to assess the perceived efficacy of a VI preparedness exercise for ophthalmology residency applicants in the 2021 residency application cycle.

Design, Setting, and Participants A cross-sectional survey was distributed online. All participants in a mock VI …

Volunteer cotton plants germinate and grow at unwanted locations like transport routes and can serve as hosts for a harmful cotton pests called cotton boll weevils. The main objective of this study was to develop a geographic information system (GIS) framework to efficiently locate volunteer cotton plants in the cotton production regions in southern Texas, thus reducing time and economic cost for their removal. A GIS network analysis tool was applied to estimate the most likely routes for cotton transportation, and a GIS model was created to identify and visualize potential areas of volunteer cotton growth. The GIS model indicated …
