The Haunting Of Her House: How Virginia Law Punishes Women Who Become Mothers Through Rape, Jordan S. Miceli
The Haunting Of Her House: How Virginia Law Punishes Women Who Become Mothers Through Rape, Jordan S. Miceli
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
If a rape victim becomes pregnant following the attack, she has three options: abort the pregnancy, place the child for adoption, or keep and raise the child. However, by requiring proof of conviction of rape to terminate the parental rights of the man who fathered that child through his rape, the Commonwealth of Virginia imposes a substantial burden on a victim weighing those options. To obtain a conviction under the current scheme, a victim, through her local prosecutor, has to prove to a jury that the accused committed the rape beyond a reasonable doubt. The Commonwealth requires proof of conviction …
Percutaneous Tracheostomy; As It Stands Today, Devaraja K
Percutaneous Tracheostomy; As It Stands Today, Devaraja K
Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences
Conventionally, tracheostomy includes surgical creation of tracheo-cutaneous communication. It is done either to bypass the upper airway obstruction or to facilitate optimal mechanical ventilation and early weaning off the ventilator support in neurologically unstable patients. For many years now, percutaneous tracheostomy has been proposed as an alternative to open surgical tracheostomy in ventilator-dependent patients. This review briefly narrates the principles and procedure of percutaneous tracheostomy. In addition, the article sheds light on a few critical problems that one could encounter during the process and discusses countermeasures to overcome those difficulties. Finally, the role of intra-procedure bronchoscopy or ultrasonography and of …

Getting It Right! Improving Kenya’S Human Capital By Reducing Stunting—A Household Account, Timothy Abuya, Wangari Ng'ang'a
Reproductive Health
In the last two decades, Kenya has attained middle-income status and established a diverse and private-sector-driven economy. On several socio-economic indicators, such as education, gender equality, and democracy, Kenya scores much higher than its peers. More than two-thirds of Kenyans are under 35 years of age, thus the country’s development hinges on the quality of its youth—their levels of education and skills, their values and attitudes, and the quality of their health and productivity. While Kenya’s investments in the development of its human capital positions the country well to sustain accelerated growth, the trajectory is threatened by high rates of …

Paul Heaton, Oral History Interview, 2021, Matt Jones
Oral Histories
In 2021, Eastern Michigan University Archives lecturer Matt Jones began documenting the story of Ypsilanti’s Human Rights Ordinance #1279 in an effort to explore the ways in which local queer activism has evolved multi-generationally in Ypsilanti. What began as a refusal of service by a local print shop to a small EMU student group quickly turned into a years-long battle over who was deserving of basic human rights. To the LGBTQ activists and community members documented here, they had always been present in the community: working, paying taxes, painting their houses, mowing their lawns, attending council meetings, and even serving …
Extending The Quality Of Secure Service Model To Multi-Hop Networks, Paul M. Simon, Scott R. Graham
Extending The Quality Of Secure Service Model To Multi-Hop Networks, Paul M. Simon, Scott R. Graham
Faculty Publications
Rarely are communications networks point-to-point. In most cases, transceiver relay stations exist between transmitter and receiver end-points. These relay stations, while essential for controlling cost and adding flexibility to network architectures, reduce the overall security of the respective network. In an effort to quantify that reduction, we extend the Quality of Secure Service (QoSS) model to these complex networks, specifically multi-hop networks. In this approach, the quantification of security is based upon probabilities that adversarial listeners and disruptors gain access to or manipulate transmitted data on one or more of these multi-hop channels. Message fragmentation and duplication across available channels …

Inequalities In Heterosexual Sex And How We Can Become Equals, Sophie Bierly
Inequalities In Heterosexual Sex And How We Can Become Equals, Sophie Bierly
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Sexual inequality is well researched in the academic sphere but is absent from the political realm. Previous research has identified that sex is defined for men’s pleasure, that women suffer from an orgasm gap, and that male domination is standard in heterosexual sex. Due to the private nature of sex, sexual inequality is untouched as a personal problem rather than deconstructed as a political injustice. However, the universality of sexual inequality in heterosexual relationships demonstrates that these overlooked personal problems are rooted in widespread cultural misogyny. Sex is one of the primary ways in which we perform gendered socialization, due …

Western North American Naturalist
The Aransas-Wood Buffalo population of Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) migrates approximately 4000 km through the central Great Plains biannually, between their breeding and wintering grounds. Whooping Cranes depend on stopover sites to provide secure resting locations and the caloric resources necessary to complete their migration, such as the USFWS-designated critical habitat area in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) of Nebraska. This area includes braided river habitat characterized by low-elevation and submerged sandbars, which provide important roosting and foraging opportunities for migrating Whooping Cranes. We used long-range photography, videography, and behavioral scan sampling to document forage items consumed …
Lived Experiences Of New Nurses With Lateral Violence And Their Decision To Remain In The Nursing Profession, Lorraine Ann Hover
Lived Experiences Of New Nurses With Lateral Violence And Their Decision To Remain In The Nursing Profession, Lorraine Ann Hover
Dissertations
The issue of lateral violence, or nurse-on-nurse violence, is a major factor in why new nurses leave the nursing profession within the first two years of professional practice. There is considerable research into mitigating factors, why nurses leave, and programs to address lateral violence, however, little to no research has been conducted on why nurses choose to remain in the profession despite their experiences. This lack of research necessitates the need for further study into the lived experiences of new nurses with lateral violence and their decision to remain in the profession. This qualitative descriptive phenomenological study helps to address …

Being A Caregiver In The Time Of A Pandemic: An Integrative Review, Julia Tokarz
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Aim: To review and analyze research to better understand the effects of COVID-19 on informal caregivers and the strategies that could be employed to help the caregiver cope with any additional stress or burden of care.
Background: Informal caregivers are not paid for their services and often are not medically trained but provide care for their care recipients. Caregivers deal with stress while managing their care recipient’s health, financials, and social adjustments. The impact of COVID-19 and quarantine compounded the stressors of the caregiver. During stressful times, the health and well-being of the caregiver needs to be preserved.

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Baddeleyite (monoclinic; m-ZrO2) is a widespread accessory phase within shergottites. However, the effects of shock loading on baddeleyite U-Pb isotopic systematics, and therefore its reliability as a geochronometer within highly shocked lithologies, are less well constrained. To investigate the effects of shock metamorphism on baddeleyite U-Pb chronology, we have conducted high-resolution microstructural analysis and in-situ U-Pb isotopic measurements for baddeleyite within enriched basaltic shergottites Northwest Africa (NWA) 7257, NWA 8679 and Zagami. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analyses of baddeleyite reveal significant microstructural heterogeneity within individual thin sections, recording widespread partial to complete reversion from high-pressure (≥3.3 GPa) orthorhombic zirconia polymorphs. …

World Changers: Social Justice At The Heart Of Middle School Language Arts Curriculum, Mackenzie Mcclain
Honors Theses
English classrooms, at their best, are safe places for adolescents to critically engage with difficult issues presented in novels and the real world. One such issue is human trafficking, which is expected to soon become the world’s most profitable criminal industry (Knudsen, 2015). Incorporating values and instructional approaches from social justice pedagogy, I have designed a sixth-grade language arts unit plan about human trafficking based upon Francesco D’Adamo’s novel, Iqbal (2003). My purpose was to create resources, such as standards-based learning objectives, text sets, lesson plans, and student projects to use in my own classroom, as well as for teachers …

The Association Fallacy – Fraud And Financial Reporting Quality In The Customer-Supplier Relationship, Nicholas Willett
The Association Fallacy – Fraud And Financial Reporting Quality In The Customer-Supplier Relationship, Nicholas Willett
Honors Scholar Theses
As with individuals, corporate entities are vulnerable to committing logical fallacies in the decision-making process. One such fallacy that has been observed across multiple disciplines is the phenomenon of guilt by association, here referred to as the “association fallacy.” In this study, I demonstrate the existence of the association fallacy within historical customer-supplier relationships, during which the supplier is named in an SEC Accounting and Auditing Enforcement Release (AAER). A panel regression is employed to track indicators of customer earnings management behavior in the years before, during, and after the supplier AAER. A cross-sectional analysis is also used to assess …

Nursing Management To Reduce Hospital Readmissions After Percutaneous Coronary Interventions- Integrative Review, Jeena S. Daniel, Doreen Wagner
Nursing Management To Reduce Hospital Readmissions After Percutaneous Coronary Interventions- Integrative Review, Jeena S. Daniel, Doreen Wagner
Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects
Abstract
Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) are considered life-saving techniques in the event of myocardial infarction and remain the standard of care for managing acute heart attack. Given the success of the procedures, decreased complications, and the economic advantage over open-heart surgery, coronary interventions continue to be the preferred treatment choice. However, amidst the growth and success of these procedures, readmissions after percutaneous coronary interventions have been identified and still prevail among hospitals. Hence, the goal was to conduct an integrative review to identify and synthesize literature on the interventions that help reduce readmissions after percutaneous coronary interventions and illuminate nurses' …
