Rising From The Ashes: Sowing A New Generation Of Post-Pandemic Violin Students, Nancy Denise Ditto Jan 2022

Rising From The Ashes: Sowing A New Generation Of Post-Pandemic Violin Students, Nancy Denise Ditto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

During the global pandemic, remote violin lessons became much more widely available. Online learning was widely viewed as suboptimal at that time, but many parents preferred the online platform to in-person learning because they felt their children were safer at home. Teaching violin virtually can be challenging for teachers because they cannot provide essential hands-on instruction. There are difficulties like tuning the instrument, assessing tone quality, etc., and the inability of students to play in ensembles may handicap their motivation to practice. Some aspects of online teaching may be advantageous, such as teachers being able to reach almost all students …

Enhancing Groundwater Flow Modeling And Dry Cell Management In The Unconfined Aquifer (Shallow Aquifer) In Shelby County, Tn, Joel Pierce Jan 2022

Enhancing Groundwater Flow Modeling And Dry Cell Management In The Unconfined Aquifer (Shallow Aquifer) In Shelby County, Tn, Joel Pierce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Numerical groundwater modelers often encounter challenges in implementing and computing regional unconfined aquifer models that match real-world water table undulations and address localized areas of drying/rewetting. A common conservative assumption in such models states that adding greater, real-world detail does not correlate to more substantive model results. The proposed work, however, tests the hypothesis that by incorporating specific areas of greater hydrogeologic complexity into modeling regional sized unconfined aquifers, simulated heads will better match observed local conditions, especially in areas of water loss through aquitard breaches and where dry cells are a natural condition of the system. A series of …

Abstract Examining adult learners' perceptions of effective teaching in career and technical education is needed to enhance the principal objective of refining learning value is determining acceptable teaching practices for the student (Davies & Wilson, 2020). In addition, this subject is worth investigating to highlight the social inequalities that plague nontraditional learners' lives within the educational system (Clycq et al., 2014). Finally, to show the need for a support system inside the classroom and out (Chao & Good, 2004). Duncan-Andrade (2009) introduces the concept of Critical Hope. Critical Hope comprises three elements that can stand independently or collectively: material, Socratic, …

Legacies Of The Death Penalty: Sacrifice, Survival, And The Possibility Of Justice, Sarah Kathryn Marshall Jan 2022

Legacies Of The Death Penalty: Sacrifice, Survival, And The Possibility Of Justice, Sarah Kathryn Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Concluding the first year of his seminars on the death penalty, Derrida writes that “even when it will have been abolished, the death penalty will survive.” This dissertation interprets his claim in various contexts and with particular attention to the specificity of Derrida’s discourse on survival or survivance. The first chapter attends to the complicity of the Western philosophical tradition, through the example of Martin Heidegger, in providing the theoretical scaffold for the institution of capital punishment. This chapter also traces a logic of donner la mort, or giving death, from the philosophical level to the social level, working out …

Financial Exchange Industrial Organization, Sports Championships And Stock Market Reaction, Beauty Premiums, And Machine Learning, David Adan Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

First, I examine how the forces of automation, competition, and demutualization are rapidly changing the industrial organization, ownership, and capital structure of the financial exchange industry. I propose the conditions under which demutualization becomes optimal from the perspective of mutually owned exchange owners. I then proceed to build an empirical dataset characterizing the evolution of the leading stock and derivative exchanges around the World along these dimensions. I empirically find that technology driven growth opportunities, product driven growth opportunities and increases in market concentration are the main stimulants for demutualization. In this paper I examine market reaction at the firm-level …

The Relationship Of Cognitive Load And Motivation As A Predictor Of Persistence In Accelerated Online Asynchronous Courses, Alan Wesley Kinsey Jan 2022

The Relationship Of Cognitive Load And Motivation As A Predictor Of Persistence In Accelerated Online Asynchronous Courses, Alan Wesley Kinsey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

With the increase in online course enrollments each year, there is a continued examination of online course persistence, particularly in accelerated online courses. This examination of online course persistence has typically examined individual learner factors as contributors to persistence. However, research examining the institutional and pedagogical factors of persistence can continue to further understanding what factors lead to learner persistence decisions. The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study is to examine to what extent, if any, community college learners’ perceived online course cognitive load and motivation predict persistence in an accelerated online course. The theoretical framework for this study …

Enhanced Dopamine Autoreceptor Functioning During Blockade Of Dopamine Transporters, Rachel Pace Jan 2022

Enhanced Dopamine Autoreceptor Functioning During Blockade Of Dopamine Transporters, Rachel Pace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dopamine autoreceptors (DARs) and dopamine transporters (DATs) influence dopamine transmission in the brain's mesolimbic pathway. Prior studies have focused on how activation of DARs influences trafficking of DATs, but how DATs influence DARs remains unclear. Male and female C57BL/6J mice received daily injections of either cocaine (DAT blocker) or saline for seven days then underwent stereotaxic surgery to obtain fixed potential amperometric recordings of DAR-mediated dopamine release. All mice received a mid-surgery injection of cocaine, and DAR-mediated dopamine release was assessed once more during maximal DAT blockade. The current study found that DAR functionality was increased during peak cocaine effects, …

Expanding The Federal Work Product Doctrine To Unrepresented Litigants, Jennifer A. Gundlach, Zeus Smith

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Clerk' offices in federal courthouses across the country designate individuals who do not have counsel as "pro se," a term that comes from the Latin inpropria persona meaning 'for oneself " The term is ambiguous as to the reasons why individuals appear without counsel. While some may purposefully choose not to hire a lawyer, for many it is not a choice.

Access to justice in federal courts requires not just entry into the courts for all litigants, but also fair treatment during the course of litigation. Unfortunately, all unrepresented individuals face disadvantages in federal courts. They are, for the most …

A Comparison Of Two Generalizations To The Linear Sampling Method For Inverse Scattering, Yeasmin Sultana, James E. Richie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The linear sampling method (LSM) is a very popular method for determining the boundary of an object from the scattered field. However, there are instances where LSM provides the convex hull of the boundary rather than the true boundary. There are two common generalizations to LSM: the Generalized Linear Sampling Method (GLSM) and the Multipoles-based Linear Sampling Method (MLSM). In this paper, the ability of GLSM and MLSM to overcome some of the deficiencies of LSM are investigated. It is found that GLSM may be ideal for imaging thin features of scatterers and that MLSM can provide an improvement over …

Inclusion Vr: A New Virtual Reality Device For Inclusive Experiences, D. Ojados Gonzalez, I.J. Ibarra Berrocal, G.A. Salcedo Eugenio, A. Macian Morales, V. Di Leo, A. Pagan Sanchez

Papers

There are many public and private spaces and environments where design characteristics are a severe impediment to accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Traditional measurements of accessibility are flawed, as they fail to account for people’s mobility and physical differences. Structural barriers and individual mobility limitations that affect travel time, effort, and even successful completion are ignored. An accessibility measurement framework including measures of absolute, gross, closest assignment, single and multiple activity, probabilistic choice, and relative access has been proposed to address this problem [1]. Unfortunately, in most cases, people with reduced mobility are forced to renounce access to public …

Racism is and has been a persistent feature in Irish society (McVeigh, 1992). Higher education institutions (HEIs) and practice education settings are a microcosm of Irish society and therefore also sites where racism is experienced and/or witnessed by students. Research (Poole, 2019) found that some students on our Community Development and Youth Work (CDYW) programme witnessed racism on placement but did not feel equipped to respond. We were awarded IMPACT funding in partnership with the EDI Directorate in TU Dublin to embed anti-racism in CDYW teaching and learning in 2020/2021 and have continued this work to date. For the purposes …

Articles

The term ‘global responsibility’ projects a holistic sense of ethics, sustainability, and obligation. To achieve the long-term viability of human life on Earth, civil engineering must be conducted in increasingly responsible ways, and civil engineers must value and enact global responsibility in their work. Interviews conducted with nine civil engineers in London provide insight regarding engineers’ familiarity with the term, how they learned about it, what opportunities and barriers they face, and what might be done by professional and educational institutions to help them practice more responsibly. Results indicate: the term itself is novel but underlying concepts are not; continuing …
