This research study examined pre-service teachers’ (N=250) intentions to adopt Twitter for professional development. The study used the Technology Acceptance Model to test research hypotheses grounded in the literature. The data were collected with a survey questionnaire and analyzed with Structural Equation Modelling. Findings indicated that ease of use, subjective norms, and perceived connectedness explained the variability in intentions to use Twitter. Perceived mobility, mediated through perceived behavioral control, explained participant differences in the perceived ease of use. Implications for stakeholders include highlighting the role subjective norms and mobile applications play in facilitating the ease of use and connectedness because …
Educational Program For Caregivers Of Children With Tympanostomy Tube Otorrhea: Impact On Caregiver Self-Efficacy And Clinical Outcomes, Wendy Lord Mackey
Educational Program For Caregivers Of Children With Tympanostomy Tube Otorrhea: Impact On Caregiver Self-Efficacy And Clinical Outcomes, Wendy Lord Mackey
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
There is an overuse of oral antibiotics and acute care visits conducted to treat children with uncomplicated tympanostomy tube otorrhea (TTO), a condition easily identified by the child’s caregiver who can then independently initiate treatment with ototopical antibiotic drops (TAD). Yet, some caregivers seek urgent medical attention for children with TTO, which often results in mismanagement of the condition including the administration of oral antibiotics. This quality improvement initiative involved the development and implementation of an educational program for caregivers of children with tympanostomy tubes (TT). Resources for caregivers included a web-based instructional video, informational pocket-card, and a post-operative text …
Sepsis Discharge Program: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Reduce Sepsis Readmissions, Rex Daniel Demetria Lomboy
Sepsis Discharge Program: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Reduce Sepsis Readmissions, Rex Daniel Demetria Lomboy
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
The social and economic burden associated with sepsis readmission remains a global healthcare issue. Sepsis survivors are at higher risk for physical debilitation, readmission, and death, yet despite advanced sepsis prevention and interventions, post-sepsis care and sepsis readmission reduction efforts, remain scant. Sepsis readmission costs ($500M /year) are more than the annual cost of acute myocardial infarction ($142M /year) and heart failure ($229M/year) combined. The overall goal of this DNP project was to reduce sepsis readmissions for patients identified as high risk for readmission using a standardized, safe discharge program (SDP) and implement it using a dynamic interdisciplinary collaborative approach. …
Implementation Of A Medication Adherence Protocol In A Large Urban Safety Net Hospital, Carlie Martinez
Implementation Of A Medication Adherence Protocol In A Large Urban Safety Net Hospital, Carlie Martinez
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Medication nonadherence has a deleterious effect on patients with chronic health conditions, as it contributes to poorer health outcomes and increased healthcare spending. This Doctor of Nursing Practice project sought to improve medication adherence in at-risk patients by enhancing patient-provider communication and improving health literacy in a large, urban, safety net hospital. Utilizing a multi-prong approach, patients were provided with a visual aid – a pill card, in conjunction with the teach-back method, to improve systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DPB) and Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) over a 6-month period. Twenty-three patients participated in the project. Participant demographics, attitudes …
Using Telemedicine To Optimize The Delivery Of Care In Patients With Liver Disease, Samantha Ramirez
Using Telemedicine To Optimize The Delivery Of Care In Patients With Liver Disease, Samantha Ramirez
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Chronic Liver Disease (CLD) is one of the top causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Among the spectrum of liver diseases, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the most common cause of cirrhosis and one of the top reasons for a liver transplant. Patients with NASH end up with hepatic decompensation and liver-related complications such as malnutrition, sarcopenia, frailty, and death. Telemedicine has transformed health care by improving access, reducing cost, and increasing the quality of care. However, telemedicine has not been widely used to manage patients with CLD. This DNP project created a telemedicine protocol to manage patients with NASH, implemented …
Embedding Licensed Independent Providers In A Va Regional Clinical Contact Center, Bonnie Sommers-Olson
Embedding Licensed Independent Providers In A Va Regional Clinical Contact Center, Bonnie Sommers-Olson
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Inappropriate attendance in US emergency departments (ED) account for up to 40% of all ED visits. Overcrowding can lead to poorer outcomes for patients in the ED, including a higher rate of triage to non-monitored area and longer timeframes to physician initial assessment. Additionally, the cost for unnecessary ED care is two to three times greater than care is in an Urgent Care or Clinic and cost billions of dollars in the U.S. yearly. Licensed Independent Providers (LIP); Medical Doctors and Nurse Practitioners were embedded into a VHA VISN registered nurse telephone triage system. Protocols were developed for additional opportunities …

Adoption Of Teamstepps® To Promote Collaboration And Problem-Solving: A Pilot Training Program For Clinical Nursing Leaders, Manvir Nijjar
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Quality improvement, a concept implemented by Florence Nightingale in the 19th century, is now deeply embedded in United States healthcare policy from licensure to payment models (Nightingale, 1863). The culture of safety and the emphasis on process improvement is engrained in high reliability organizations, fostering an environment of collective mindfulness and collective enactment to prevent error. To achieve high quality, healthcare organizations must bridge the core competencies of communication, collaboration, and problem solving taught in pre-licensure and translate them in inter-professional practice using evidence-based approaches. Nurses and nursing leaders must be equipped with the right problem-solving tools to drive efficiency, …
Improving Treatment Outcomes For Veterans With Ptsd And Sleep Disturbance, Gia Santoro
Improving Treatment Outcomes For Veterans With Ptsd And Sleep Disturbance, Gia Santoro
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) improve overall symptoms, but sleep disturbance often persists. Insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) frequently co-occur with PTSD and contribute to the overall sleep disturbance. Successfully treating the sleep disturbance that occurs in the context of PTSD, including insomnia and OSA when present, will improve sleep, decrease PTSD symptoms, and enhance quality of life. This DNP project adapted an assessment and treatment protocol for veterans with PTSD and sleep disturbance for use in an outpatient veterans Affairs (VA) PTSD clinic. The protocol was implemented in a patient education and treatment-planning group for veterans …
Use Of Teach-Back During Informed Consent In Cancer Clinical Trials, Christa Varnadoe
Use Of Teach-Back During Informed Consent In Cancer Clinical Trials, Christa Varnadoe
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Five percent of the 1.8 million patients diagnosed with cancer in the United States (US) enroll annually in a clinical trial (American Cancer Society, 2021; Institute of Medicine Committee on Cancer Clinical Trials; National Cancer Institute Cooperative Group Program, 2010). Flawed research consent practices are detrimental to patient safety and costly to the US Healthcare system (Eisenberg et al., 2012; Unger et al., 2019). Well-trained nurses are imperative to conducting rigorous, reproducible, and quality research (Brandt et al., 2011). Programs designed to educate nurses on how to implement comprehensive communication strategies confidently during the Cancer Clinical Trials (CCT) consent process …
Retention Of The Newly Licensed Registered Nursing Workforce Post-Coronavirus (Covid-19): Establishing A Trauma-Informed Wellness Program, The Registered Nurse Residency Script For The Future (Rnrx) (© Maryellen Hope Kosturko, 2022), Maryellen Hope Kosturko
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Retention of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) is crucial to the future success of a thriving nursing workforce. It is well-established that most NLRNs experience stress as they transition from school to work environments leading some to leave the workforce or nursing altogether within their first two years post-graduation. The novel Coronavirus virus (Covid-19) pandemic exacerbated this problem as NLRNs experienced increased stress, fear, exhaustion, uncertainty, and dissatisfaction, further threatening the future of the nursing workforce. The aim of this project was to develop and implement a trauma-informed wellness program in an acute care inpatient hospital, The Registered Nurse Residency …

New Parameterization Of Air-Sea Exchange Coefficients And Its Impact On Intensity Prediction Under Major Tropical Cyclones, Woojeong Lee, Sung-Hun Kim, Il-Ju Moon, Michael M. Bell, Isaac Ginis
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Understanding and quantifying air-sea exchanges of enthalpy and momentum fluxes are crucial for the advanced prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity. Here, we present a new parameterization of air-sea fluxes at extreme wind speeds from 40 m s−1 to 75 m s−1, which covers the range of major TCs. Our approach assumes that the TC can reach its maximum potential intensity (MPI) if there are no influences of external forces such as vertical wind shear or other environmental constraints. This method can estimate the ratio of the enthalpy and momentum exchange coefficient (Ck/Cd …

The history of consumer goods and consumer credit markets pre-sents an anomaly: market transactions for consumer goods and credit transactions evolved in tandem from face to face and bespoke to standardized and widely distributed; the law governing these “product” markets has not. With consumer goods, the Uniform Commercial Code codifies implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, and the common law of tort provides strict liability for defective products. With consumer fi-nance contracts, borrowers enjoy scant common law protection. And yet both consumer goods and consumer contracts may be danger-ously defective “products.”

The coastal megacity Shanghai is located in the center of the Yangtze River Delta, a dominant flame retardants (FRs) production region in China, especially for organophosphate esters (OPEs). This prompted us to investigate occurrence and seasonal changes of atmospheric OPEs in Shanghai, as well as to evaluate their sources, environmental behavior and fate as a case study for global coastal regions. Atmospheric gas and particle phase OPEs were weekly collected at two coastal sites - the emerging town Lingang New Area (LGNA), and the chemical-industry zone Jinshan Area (JSA) from July 2016–June 2017. Total atmospheric concentrations of the observed OPEs …

The Island of Hawai’i was formed by repeated eruptions of basalts at an oceanic hotspot. Kı̄lauea, the youngest among the subaerial volcanoes of the island, erupted intensely in 2018. The eruption provided an opportunity to look into the mechanisms that operate at the volcano and associated earthquake activities, as it was recorded simultaneously, for the first time, by onshore and offshore seismometers. We used most of the publicly available seismic data during the eruption period, including temporary arrays, to build a more complete earthquake catalog during the eruption than that provided by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. We used a short-time-average/long-time-average …

How Do You Meme?: Using Memes For Information Literacy Instruction, Christina Boyle
Publications and Research
Memes, or image macros, have become a standard method of digital information sharing. This is especially true during times when current events ignite a heightened desire for information seeking among students. Memes can be sources of misinformation, such as during events of the past decade, including recent presidential elections, social justice movements such as Black Lives Matter, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Librarians need to address this format in their information literacy teachings. In this article, the author briefly outlines the rise of internet memes, discusses how higher education students are engaging with them, and highlights some problematic meme-sharing throughout …

Language-Internal Reanalysis Of Clitic Placement In Heritage Grammars Reduces The Cost Of Computation: Evidence From Bulgarian, Tanya Ivanova-Sullivan, Irina A. Sekerina, Davood Tofighi, Maria Polinsky
Publications and Research
The study offers novel evidence on the grammar and processing of clitic placement in heritage languages. Building on earlier findings of divergent clitic placement in heritage European Portuguese and Serbian, this study extends this line of inquiry to Bulgarian, a language where clitic placement is subject to strong prosodic constraints. We found that, in heritage Bulgarian, clitic placement is processed and rated differently than in the baseline, and we asked whether such clitic misplacement results from the transfer from the dominant language or follows from languageinternal reanalysis. We used a self-paced listening task and an aural acceptability rating task with …

The circular economy aims to promote the use of recycled products and to close the nutrient cycle loop by avoiding nutrient leakage and detrimental environmental effects, while also reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. The production of nitrogen is energy-intensive, requiring natural gas, whereas, finite resources like phosphorus and potassium are mined. Recent developments in nutrient recovery technologies have resulted in different types of recycling-derived fertilisers (RDFs) with the potential to substitute commonly used synthetic mineral fertilisers. This study aims to understand perceptions and preferences regarding the properties and parameters that end-users find important in RDFs. A better understanding of …

This study pursues the question of why Yhwh, who in the Decalogue prohibits the creation and worship of divine images, would order Moses to create a snake image as the mode of healing snake bites in the desert (Num 21:4–9). This question is legitimated as the Judahites subsequently burn incense to Moses’ bronze snake, which Hezekiah destroys as an act of loyalty to Yhwh. Adopting a definition of meaning from symbolic action theory in cultural psychology, this essay explores what the bronze snake image would have meant for the earliest audiences of these stories. In the core of the essay, …

Knowledge Integration (KI) or the capability to collate and process distinctive stocks of organizational information is central to innovation. Although an essential capability, KI is also challenging to accomplish in practice due to relational obstacles. The relational obstacles arise because of knowledge boundaries: (a) syntactic boundary where the challenge is to transfer the knowledge; (b) semantic boundary where the challenge is to translate the knowledge; and (c) pragmatic boundary, where the challenge is to transform the knowledge to realize relational rents. In this paper, we propose that these relational obstacles could be resolved through a common lexicon, common meaning, and …
System And Methods For Wireless Power Transfer Scheduling In A Wireless Power Transfer Network, Muhammad Omer Farooq
System And Methods For Wireless Power Transfer Scheduling In A Wireless Power Transfer Network, Muhammad Omer Farooq
Department of Mathematics Publications
A transmitter in a wireless power transfer network (WPTN) needs to deliver wireless power to a number of wireless power receiver. There can be diverse set of wireless power receivers, for example, Internet of Things devices, smart phones, laptops, etc. The wireless power requirements for receivers vary depending upon their type and state. Commercially deployed WPTNs may also have different subscription plans for users, hence each user’s device should receive wireless power transfer (WPT) service based on the subscribed plan. Usually, a transmitter has to provide service to a number of receivers. Hence, the transmitter needs to have a WPT …

The Ubiquitous Creeping Segments On Oceanic Transform Faults, Pengcheng Shi, Meng Matt Wei, Robert S. Pockalny
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Oceanic transform faults are a significant component of the global plate boundary system and are well known for generating fewer and smaller earthquakes than expected. Detailed studies at a handful of sites support the hypothesis that an abundance of creeping segments is responsible for most of the observed deficiency of earthquakes on those faults. We test this hypothesis on a global scale. We relocate Mw >5 earthquakes on 138 oceanic transform faults around the world and identify creeping segments on these faults. We demonstrate that creeping segments occur on almost all oceanic transform faults, which could explain their deficiency of …
Adversarial Attacks On Speech Separation Systems, Kendrick Trinh
Adversarial Attacks On Speech Separation Systems, Kendrick Trinh
Master's Projects
Speech separation is a special form of blind source separation in which the objective is to decouple two or more sources such that they are distinct. The need for such an ability grows as speech activated device usage increases in our every day life. These systems, however, are susceptible to malicious actors. In this work, we repurpose proven adversarial attacks and leverage them against a combination speech separation and speech recognition system. The attack adds adversarial noise to a mixture of two voices such that the two outputs of the speech separation system are similarly transcribed by the speech recognition …

The deep ocean is the largest ecosystem on the planet, constituting greater than 90% of all habitable space. Over three-quarters of countries globally have deep ocean within their Exclusive Economic Zones. While maintaining deep-ocean function is key to ensuring planetary health, deficiencies in knowledge and governance, as well as inequitable global capacity, challenge our ability to safeguard the resilience of this vast realm, leaving the fate of the deep ocean in the hands of a few. Historically, deep-ocean scientific exploration and research have been the purview of a limited number of nations, resulting in most of humankind not knowing the …

Perceptions Of Coding Instruction In K-12 Archdiocese Of Los Angeles Catholic Schools, Krikor Koko Kiladjian
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Traditional pedagogy offers students opportunities to enhance various skills and acquire content knowledge; however, additional steps can be taken to enhance student achievement, prepare them for future occupations, and bridge the divide in access to technology. A curriculum that integrates coding instruction affords students the opportunity to augment their collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills. This is especially crucial for traditionally marginalized populations who have experienced inequitable access to technology. Nevertheless, coding is not integrated in schools in different domains, including Catholic institutions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (ADLA).
This dissertation used a descriptive and inferential quantitative methodology …

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
When management guru Peter Drucker wrote about entrepreneurship in 1984 (Drucker, 1984), entrepreneurial activities were primarily perceived as an American phenomenon. Today, entrepreneurship has spurred globally, from developed countries to emerging economies, thanks to accelerated globalization, integration of people and cultures, and rapid technological innovation. While Drucker’s focus on entrepreneurial decisions in the late 1980s was mainly about established corporations, millions of empowered individual entrepreneurs are increasingly recognized as the backbone of the global economy (Khanna, 2007). Thomas Friedman once described this stage of globalization as globalization 4.0, which features empowered entrepreneurial individuals (Friedman, 2005). New technology, especially information and …
