Politics, Catharsis, And Football: The Brazilian National Team As A Symbolic Device Of Nationhood, Marco Bettine Mar 2026

Politics, Catharsis, And Football: The Brazilian National Team As A Symbolic Device Of Nationhood, Marco Bettine

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

This article examines the growing entanglement between football, political conflict, and national identity in contemporary Brazil, focusing on the Brazilian National Football Team as a highly charged national symbol. Rather than assuming a direct causal link between sporting success and political outcomes, the paper explores how football has become a space where political meanings and public emotions are constantly reinterpreted and disputed. The discussion revisits the changing political meanings attached to the national team over the last decade. Particular attention is given to the perceived relationship between football performance and electoral cycles, the politicization of the yellow jersey, the use …

Between Peaks And Traditions: Indigenous Andean Women Mountaineers, Hybrid Identities, And Decolonial Resistance Through Sport, Ilina Arsova, Lars Dzikus

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

This paper explores the hybrid identities of Indigenous Bolivian women mountaineers, focusing on how they embrace and resist elements of both Indigenous and Western traditions through sports. Challenging dominant Western narratives of mountaineering (Rak, 2021), these women engage in climbing as an act of cultural preservation (Haynes, 2013; Rak, 2021) and gender advocacy (U.N. Women, 2021). Informed by Indigenous feminism (Caravajal, 2019; Green, 2020) and social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979), the study explores the intersections of gender, culture, and mountain sports in the South American Andes. Through an interpretivist lens, this study uses narrative inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, …

The Phoenix Trauma Response Model (Ptrm): An Integrative And Innovative Approach To Trauma Recovery And Growth, Latesha S. Holloman, Lauren B. Robins, Tammie Willis, Courtney V. Morris Mar 2026

The Phoenix Trauma Response Model (Ptrm): An Integrative And Innovative Approach To Trauma Recovery And Growth, Latesha S. Holloman, Lauren B. Robins, Tammie Willis, Courtney V. Morris

Journal of Human Services Scholarship and Interprofessional Collaboration

Trauma is increasingly understood as a developmentally consequential experience that shapes identity, regulation, and relational functioning across the lifespan. Although trauma-informed care, resilience theory, posttraumatic growth, and narrative approaches have expanded understanding of recovery, few frameworks articulate a structured developmental progression that integrates prevention, intervention, and intergenerational transformation within a unified model. The Phoenix Trauma Response Model (PTRM) addresses this gap by introducing a cyclical, phase-based framework organized around four interrelated processes: Recognition, Reframing, Reclamation, and Replication of Strength. Central to the model is the construct of conversion potential, defined as the structured capacity to translate distress into purposeful …

Performance Evaluation Of Self-Compacting Geopolymer Concrete With Recycled Brick Aggregate Under Varied Curing And Temperature Conditions, Thavasumony Dhasan, Raid S. Alrashidi, Muhammad Saleem, Joonaith C. Veedu, Shahnawaz Alam Mar 2026

Performance Evaluation Of Self-Compacting Geopolymer Concrete With Recycled Brick Aggregate Under Varied Curing And Temperature Conditions, Thavasumony Dhasan, Raid S. Alrashidi, Muhammad Saleem, Joonaith C. Veedu, Shahnawaz Alam

Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science

In recent days, Self-Compacting Geopolymer Concrete (SCGC) has the potential to revolutionize concrete technology by combining the benefits of both Geopolymer Concrete (GPC) and Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC). The production of SCGC requires proper selection of materials and proportions to achieve a composite concrete with a refined pore structure and low permeability. Additionally, chemical and mineral admixtures play a crucial role in enhancing and refining the pore structure of SCGC, as mineral admixtures reduce the absorbency of the cement matrix further and improve the porosity of the aggregates. In this investigation, the impact of high temperatures on the properties of SCGC …

Primary Small Vessel Central Nervous System Vasculitis Presenting As A Parietotemporal Mass: A Case Report, William Jaffee, Anastasia Tsomides, Emily Cathey

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction: Primary central nervous system vasculitis (PCNSV) of small vessels is an exceedingly rare presentation of vasculitis. Diagnosis typically takes many months, requires multiple diagnostic modalities, and includes a positive biopsy in less than 50% of cases. We present a unique case of PCNSV that will help clinicians identify this rare disease. Clinical Findings: A man in his 60s presented with confusion and aphasia and was found to have a parietotemporal brain mass. The mass was heterogenous, with inflammatory, cystic, necrotic, and hemorrhagic components. Two separate brain biopsies underwent review at 3 institutions before the diagnosis was made. Clinical Course: …

Civil Liability In Airbnb Transactions And The Legal Gaps In Consumer Protection In Vietnam, Tuan Ngoc Tran Mar 2026

Civil Liability In Airbnb Transactions And The Legal Gaps In Consumer Protection In Vietnam, Tuan Ngoc Tran

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

The rapid growth of the collaborative or sharing economy has posed numerous challenges to traditional legal systems, particularly in relation to short-term accommodation. As a decentralized, intermediary platform, Airbnb raises complex legal issues concerning the allocation of civil liability, enforceability of contracts, and mechanisms for consumer protection. In the context of Vietnamese law, where there is a lack of clear regulatory frameworks to govern digital platforms, consumers risk having their rights infringed without effective legal remedies. The article focuses on three core issues: the legal classification of hosts on Airbnb, the enforceability of clickwrap contracts, and the cross-border enforceability of …

Unapologetically Her: Leadership Lessons From Mom, Seth D. Kastle Ed.D., Courtney Imhoff Mar 2026

Unapologetically Her: Leadership Lessons From Mom, Seth D. Kastle Ed.D., Courtney Imhoff

Leadership Faculty Publications

The narrative of this article is a culmination of two lived experiences of the children of Melanie Elliott: Seth Kastle and Courtney Imhoff. Our mother has been the foundational influence on who we are and has been the catalyst in our development of a bias for action, a willingness to lead and a drive to take care of others. Through the process of writing, it became evident that, rather than conflating the overall narrative of this article into one voice, the stories were better told when preserved in their individual narratives. The reader will note that above each paragraph is …

Faculty Research 2026

Automated detection of complex animal behavior remains a challenge in neuroscience. Developments in computer vision have greatly advanced automated behavior detection and allow high-throughput preclinical and mechanistic studies. An integrated hardware and software solution is necessary to facilitate the adoption of these advances in the field of behavioral neurogenetics, particularly for non-computational laboratories. We have published a series of papers using an open field arena to annotate complex behaviors such as grooming, posture, and gait as well as higher-level constructs such as biological age and pain. Here, we present our integrated rodent phenotyping platform, JAX Animal Behavior System (JABS), to …

Surgical Removal Of Visceral Adipose Tissue Has Therapeutic Benefit In Male Appnl-F Mice, Samuel A. Mcfadden, Yimin Fang, Kathleen Quinn, Mackenzie R. Peck, Jenelle E. Chapman, Tiarra Hill, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R. Hascup, Kevin Hascup Mar 2026

Surgical Removal Of Visceral Adipose Tissue Has Therapeutic Benefit In Male Appnl-F Mice, Samuel A. Mcfadden, Yimin Fang, Kathleen Quinn, Mackenzie R. Peck, Jenelle E. Chapman, Tiarra Hill, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R. Hascup, Kevin Hascup

Articles

Purpose:  Visceral white adipose tissue (vWAT) accumulation causes systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and senescent cell accumulation that are risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Visceral fat removal (VFR) improves metabolism and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines.  We hypothesized that VFR removal in AD mice would improve metabolism and cognition.

Methods:  Male and female APPNL-F mice underwent sham or vWAT surgical resection (periovarian or epididymal and perirenal) at 4 (pre-symptomatic) and 16 (symptomatic) months of age to understand interventional and therapeutic effects, respectively.  At 18 months of age, glucose metabolism and novel object recognition (NOR) memory were assayed followed by …

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun Mar 2026

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun

Faculty Publications

This article examines representations of the Modern English Speaker of Korean (MESK) in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), as lexicographers listened to and documented the language of this figure over the past century. I show that, until the early twenty-first century, the most salient type of MESK was the Koreanist, a white, masculine expert on and translator of Korean, the language of a racial other. By contrast, more recent Korean entries, influenced by the global spread of hallyu, have invoked the Korea Fan, a figure that potentially unsettles longstanding ideologies of language, race, and gender. I …

Du Journal De Deuil À L’Œuvre De Sépulture : « Lo » (Thanassis Vassiliou, 2021-2025), Marie Martin

Regards

After his mother’s death in 2017, Thanassis Vassiliou returned to Greece and began filming. The instinctive act of recording aimed both to come to terms with the now definitive absence in places still filled with memories, and to document his own reactions, attempting to preserve them even if he could not fully understand them. These filmic notes could perhaps, later on, allow another perspective, according to the dynamic that Antoine Compagnon aptly analyzed as paradoxical in relation to Barthes’s Mourning Diary: “mourning and narrative are antinomic, but [...] only narrative [...] is capable of expressing the experience of mourning, …

« From Ground Zero » Et « Letters » : Carnets Polyphoniques En Quête D’Intersubjectivité, Eve Le Fessant Coussonneau

Regards

The two polyphonic films From Ground Zero (2025, produced by Rashid Masharawi) and Letters (2025, produced by Josef Khallouf) bring together, in response to the war in Gaza, unique short films, letters and chronicles that address collective questions. How do these films take charge of the urgent need to problematize, aesthetically and politically, the relationship between subjectivity and the collective? From the Palestinian enclave or neighboring Lebanon, they seek irreducible singularities and intersubjective connections in the face of the horror of genocide. Caught in a complex combination of places and times, their address to our spectatorial gaze thus reveals the …

Political Mediatization In The Digital Era: The Case Of Walhi West Sumatera’S Environmental Advocacy, Muhammad Thaufan Arifuddin, Ernita Arif, Yuliandre Darwis, Rinaldi Rinaldi, Muhammad Al-Amin Dalmenda

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

This article examines how political mediatization operates at the local level through environmental civil society activism in post-authoritarian Indonesia. Focusing on the West Sumatra chapter of the Indonesia Forum for Environment (WALHI) as a critical case, the study argues that media logic is not merely imposed by political elites or mainstream media, but is strategically appropriated by local civil society organizations to contest oligarchic power, shape public agendas, and sustain democratic engagement at the subnational level. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with environmental activists and youth organizers, and an analysis of …

Design And Evaluation Of A Collaborative Xr Framework With Abstract Building Blocks For Manufacturing System Prototyping, Shaun Macdonald, Bixun Chen, Yuanjie Xia, Rami Ghannam Mar 2026

Design And Evaluation Of A Collaborative Xr Framework With Abstract Building Blocks For Manufacturing System Prototyping, Shaun Macdonald, Bixun Chen, Yuanjie Xia, Rami Ghannam

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Manufacturing systems are complex installations designed and developed by stakeholders with differing expertise. However, system design primarily features traditional methods, long lead times, and siloed environments, which obstruct comprehension, communication, or collaboration. Prior research has used extended reality (XR) to prototype and visualise specific manufacturing applications; however, flexible system modelling remains complex. To address these issues and lay the foundation for future-facing manufacturing design as part of Industry 4.0, we introduce ARTIFY—a prototype XR framework for conceptual system prototyping. It features abstract building blocks that can be semantically reconfigured to support early-stage modelling of varied manufacturing systems in immersive environments. …

Do Attorneys Discriminate? Understanding The Implications Of Bias On Voir Dire & Jury Selection, Jessica Lambert

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Biases, generally defined as predispositions or inclinations for or against ideas, is a broadly prevalent aspect of human cognition and decision-making (Steinhauser, 2020). Bias is present in every decision-making structure, even those in which we strive for the greatest neutrality, such as the legal system (Alter, 2010). An especially important place to seek to minimize or eliminate bias is in the courtroom. Our justice system is built upon the assumption of impartiality and nonpartisanship (Rosenberg, 2008), yet biases and stereotypical decision- making are common criticisms of the court (Curley et al., 2022; Chopp, 2017). This study attempts to identify the …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is the rare metabolic disorder caused by variants in the ALPL gene, resulting in deficient activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALP). This leads to accumulation of substrates contributing to impaired bone mineralization. Hypophosphatasia manifests with a broad clinical spectrum; however, an increasing number of individuals with ALPL variants have been identified presenting the hallmark biochemical feature of HPP of low serum ALP activity, with or without elevated serum pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) or urine phosphoethanolamine (PEA), while remaining asymptomatic. These ALPL carriers may represent a distinct subgroup within the HPP continuum, prompting the need for clearer classification. Using data from …

Sonorisation De L’Anarchive Ou La Palestine Comme Projet Politique – À L’Écoute De « A Fidai Film » De Kamal Aljafari Et De « Partition » De Diana Allan, Judith Abensour Mar 2026

Sonorisation De L’Anarchive Ou La Palestine Comme Projet Politique – À L’Écoute De « A Fidai Film » De Kamal Aljafari Et De « Partition » De Diana Allan, Judith Abensour

Regards

Kamal Aljafari’s A Fidai Film draws on Palestinian archives confiscated by Israel in Beirut in 1982. Diana Allan created Partition using archives from Mandatory Palestine held at the Imperial War Museum in London. The film notebook not only refers to a type of fragmentary editing, but also allows us to revisit the relationship between sound and image, thus offering an exercise in remembrance in the present. By adding sound to images, the two filmmakers question the contradictions inherent in archives, their erasure or their resistance to authoritative or propagandistic discourse. Thus, under the guise of sensory and sound anthropology for …

A Review Of Interaction Between Sleep Apnea And Apoe E4 On The Risk Of Dementia, Xiuhua Ding, Carol Watwood, Amit Patel, Krupa Hegde, Brooke Mahanna, Lindsey Escudero, Jean Neils-Strunjas Ph.D, Ccc-Slp

Faculty Publications

Dementia has a significant impact on individuals, families, communities, and the economy. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) accounts for 60–80% of dementia cases. The APOE e4 allele is well known as the primary genetic risk factor for AD and dementia. Studies have also shown that sleep apnea increases the risk of dementia. Some research further suggests a possible interaction between sleep apnea and the APOE in dementia development; however, this relationship remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to synthesize evidence from the existing literature and report findings on the relationship between APOE, sleep apnea, and dementia. A systematic search of …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

BACKGROUND: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the work environment was already associated as a contributing factor to nurses’ intention to leave the workplace (Nantsupawat et al., 2016; Shah et al. 2021). Additionally, peer-to-peer nursing isolation is a problem within ambulatory nursing (Allen, 2016). However, specific investigation into intent to leave in ambulatory nursing is limited. The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) survey was first used in this setting’s ambulatory clinics in 2021. The Orthopedic Clinic RN Coordinators (RNC) initial 2021 NDNQI scores on the specific metric exploring nurses’ intentions to leave their current workplace within 3 years was …
