Michigan Tech Publications

This study unravelled the intricacy of bio-based hydrophobic formulae as a substitute for the conventional emulsified paraffin wax (hydrowax), a hydrophobic additive currently utilised in high-density fibreboard (HDF) fabrication. Utilisation of hydrowax is not a sustainable practice due to the potential depletion of its fossil-based sources. The industrial acceptability of a renewable hydrophobic additive depends on several stages of trials. Therefore, through a pilot-scale trial, this study explored the substitution effect of bio-based tall oil distillation product (TODP) in the HDF panels, establishing its mechanical and water-related properties. While the mechanical properties of the panels were not primarily influenced by …

Glynn, Elysia Poggi Davis, Tallie Z. Baram, Caroline M. Nievergelt, Giovanni Castillo, Christian Cortes, Christine Y. Chang, Dewleen Baker, Victoria B. Risbrough

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Unpredictability in the child’s environment has recently emerged as a significant and unique form of early life adversity (ELA). Cross-sectional studies have linked childhood unpredictability with increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in adults; however, no prospective studies have tested the link between childhood unpredictability and PTSD risk in later life, nor what processes, such as increased anhedonia symptoms, might mediate such risk. Here, we leveraged three distinct prospective, longitudinal cohorts to test the hypothesis that unpredictability during childhood contributes to adult PTSD via worsening anhedonia symptoms.

Methods

Participants were male service members (n=314), adult females (n=170), and adolescents …

Interfacial Structural Entropy (Ise): A Statistical Descriptor That Links Distributed Fluid Microstructures And Interfacial Properties, Zhu Jiahua, Mu Liwen, Ji Tuo, Ye Wenkai

University Research

Fluids at the nano/microscopic interface, particularly when influenced by external fields, exhibit significant variations in microstructures, resulting in complex properties that differ markedly from those of single molecules and bulk fluids. The diversity in microstructures leads to unique interfacial transport and reaction phenomena. Notably, the microstructure is a group of molecular clusters with different configurations distributed at the interface in a balanced state, yet the governing factors that determine the cluster structure and their distribution remain to be understood. Herein, we introduce interfacial structural entropy (ISE) as a metric to capture the combined effects of solid surfaces and external fields …

Using Facial Landmarks For Lip Motion Interpretation Applications, Kimi S. Wright Mar 2026

Using Facial Landmarks For Lip Motion Interpretation Applications, Kimi S. Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Facial motion, particularly lip movement, carries rich information about human speech that can be leveraged for a variety of computer vision and speech-processing tasks. Unlike other pixel-based methods, this work investigates the use of facial landmarks as a compact, privacy- preserving, and computationally efficient representation for lip-motion analysis. We evaluate landmark-based models across multiple tasks, including visual voice activity detection (VVAD), lip–audio synchroniza- tion, and visual speech recognition (VSR) for liveness detection. Using LRS3-VVAD1 and LRS22 datasets, we demonstrate that landmark-only models can achieve performance comparable to pixel-based systems for VVAD and synchronization, while significantly reducing parameter counts and inference …
