The Appropriation Of Indigenous Land In HawaiʻI, Julie Loo Mar 2026

The Appropriation Of Indigenous Land In HawaiʻI, Julie Loo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In the transition from a monarchical to a democratic governance system in Hawaiʻi, Indigenous perspectives have not been fully integrated into land-use decision-making, resulting in mistrust, cultural marginalization, and inequitable policy outcomes. While prior researchers have examined colonization in Hawaiʻi, there is limited understanding of how Hawaiian cultural protocols may impact modern state-level decisions regarding Indigenous land use. The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic case study was to explore perceptions and lived experiences related to the cultural protocol of Kapu Aloha among Kanaka Maoli who participated in the Mauna Kea blockade and government officials involved in permitting Indigenous land for …

Destabilization Or Clarification: The Potential Impact Of Chiles V. Salazar On Nifla And Other First Amendment Jurisprudence, Zhihan Xu

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

In 2019, the Colorado General Assembly passed the Minor Conversion Therapy Law (MCTL), a statute which prohibits mental health professionals from engaging in conversion therapy for minors. Three years later, Kaley Chiles, a licensed professional counselor and addiction counselor, filed a pre-enforcement challenge and sought a preliminary injunction, alleging that the MCTL improperly abridges her First Amendment right to free speech. Colorado challenged her claim, arguing that the MCTL merely regulates professional conduct and only incidentally (and permissibly) burdens speech. Chiles v. Salazar will decide whether the MCTL is a speech restriction or professional regulation, and, if it is a …

Reflections On Judging At The Intersection Of Constitutional Claims And Public Policy, Kimberly J. Mueller

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

Trial courts play an essential role in our judicial system. At the trial level, lived realities meet legal theories, and generalist judges must resolve constitutional disputes, develop the factual record, and administer justice. However, institutions, especially courts, face increasing pressure. This Keynote Address draws on cases over which I have presided to illustrate how careful process in trial courts helps maintain public trust in our institutions. These experiences reveal three lessons that trial courts teach us. First, the people bringing claims matter; they are real individuals seeking relief by telling authentic stories. Second, pleadings matter because they frame and shape …

Maintaining smart grid stability is crucial for the reliable operation of decentralized electricity networks, especially as the energy sector becomes more complex. The process of ensuring grid stability begins with collecting consumer data and comparing it to power supply requirements. Ultimately, consumers receive a report showing their energy use and pricing details. However, this process is time-consuming and can be improved by leveraging artificial intelligence to predict smart grid stability more efficiently. Specifically, an optimized Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is proposed to predict smart grid stability, addressing the challenges associated with traditional data collection and evaluation methods. Simulations from …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The escalating demand for high-resolution multimedia content has necessitated more efficient video compression solutions. The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard, despite achieving remarkable compression gains, introduces significant computational complexity, primarily due to its exhaustive Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) process. To address this, we propose an intelligent approach leveraging supervised machine learning techniques to streamline the VVC encoding process. Specifically, we introduce a Lightweight Neural Network (LNN) for efficient coding unit partitioning decisions and a Decision Tree (DT) classifier for optimizing the intra prediction process. This dual-method framework, tailored for All Intra coding configuration, significantly reduces encoder complexity while maintaining compression performance …

“You Are My Tutor, Not My Peer”: Hierarchy In Cross-Cultural Consulting In Writing Centers, Yinan Ding

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Graduate Student Presentations

Six cases of tutoring Chinese-speaking students and one case with English-speaking American student are presented to demonstrate students’ perceived hierarchy in tutoring sessions, as well as their different preferences and comfort levels with a hierarchical or peer-tutorial dynamic. Some students often addressed the tutor with the formal “you” in Mandarin Chinese, preferred to call tutors “teachers,” and expressed admiration for tutors' educational background, while English-speaking students occasionally signal hierarchical expectations, suggesting this phenomenon may transcend a single cultural group. To build writing centers as supportive, interconnected ecosystems of learning, it is important to conduct further research on students’ perceptions and …

Automated Software Size Measurement Using Multilingual Domain-Adapted Language Models, Samet Tenekeci̇, Hüseyi̇n Ünlü, Burak Keçeci̇, Muhammed Efe İnci̇r, Onur Demi̇rörs

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Software Size Measurement (SSM) is crucial for estimating required project effort as well as budget and schedule. However, many small and medium-sized companies struggle to apply objective SSM due to limited resources and lack of expertise. This often leads to inaccurate estimates and project overruns. There is a need for practical, low-resource solutions that support these tasks without requiring expert involvement. Motivated by this challenge, this study proposes an automated software size measurement approach that formulates the measurement task as supervised regression over natural language requirements, using domain-adapted transformer models. We construct large-scale Turkish and English software engineering corpora to …

Mismatched Music And Meams: Short-Form Social Media Videos And Social Attitude Messaging, Kaitlyn M. Serafin Mar 2026

Mismatched Music And Meams: Short-Form Social Media Videos And Social Attitude Messaging, Kaitlyn M. Serafin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

“If the formative power in the media are the media themselves, that raises a host of large matters” (McLuhan, 1964, p. 10). Famed communications theorist Marshall McLuhan stated this all the way back in the 60s to explain how technology can act as a formative force in the messaging of media. This is because the medium in which they communicate the messaging can act as its own force, shaping the message like clay. The dominant media at the time of this theory was television; however, in the past decade social media and short-form social media videos have become dominant forms …

Is There No Such Thing As Bad Pr? A Case Study Analysis Of Influencer Pseudo-Events, Authentic Crises, And Crises As Opportunity, And Paracrisis, Sofia Aparicio-Gallagher

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There's no such thing as bad PR, and any publicity is good publicity are phrases coined by 19th-century P.T. Barnum, a showman and businessman known for his circus hoaxes (Hiergesell, 2025). The idea implies that all media attention, whether negative or positive, is beneficial to the organization or individual. The purpose of this study is to evaluate three brands; Tarte, Poppi, and Shein during a brand event to determine whether it was a pseudo-event created to gain awareness, or a genuine, unplanned crisis. Another purpose of the study was to determine if the event was used as an opportunity for …
