Eating For Healthy Eyes: The Role Of Nutrition In Ocular Health, Brianna Stroh
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The central research question of this thesis asks: How does nutrition influence ocular health overall and the impact of nutrition on the development or progression of common eye diseases? Building upon existing research in optometry/ophthalmology, nutrition science, and public health, this project examines the physiological mechanisms linking diet to eye health and evaluates how specific nutrients and dietary patterns contribute to disease prevention and visual function. This thesis employs a comprehensive review of peer-reviewed literature to evaluate the relationship between nutrition and ocular disease. Key areas of focus include the role of oxidative stress in eye disease development, the protective …

Initial Site Of Metastasis Influences Prognosis In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Eleanor Mancheski, David Baek, Wilbur Bowne, Harish Lavu, Charles Yeo, Avinoam Nevler
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
INTRODUCTION: Metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (mPDAC) is a highly aggressive malignancy. Prior studies suggest that the initial site of metastasis may impact prognosis. This study investigates whether overall survival in mPDAC patients differs between patients first presenting with lung metastases versus those presenting with liver metastases.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis utilized the multi-institutional TriNetX database, identifying patients with histologically diagnosed PDAC who initially presented with either liver or lung metastases. Demographic, histologic, and outcome data were collected and analyzed. Patients were matched 1:1 using a nearest neighbor propensity score (PS) algorithm, and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were performed. Cox regression was …
Price Discovery On Decentralized Exchanges, Agostino Capponi, Ruizhe Jia, Shihao Yu
Price Discovery On Decentralized Exchanges, Agostino Capponi, Ruizhe Jia, Shihao Yu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) allow traders to express their willingness to pay for quick execution through a public priority fee bidding mechanism. We provide evidence that high-fee DEX trades are more informative and contribute more to price discovery. Using address-level blockchain transaction data, we show that informed traders persistently bid higher fees to secure early execution, revealing a strong willingness to pay for execution priority. Further, analysis of Ethereum mempool data demonstrates that informed traders employ a “jump bidding” strategy, placing high initial bids to deter potential competitors.
Arrival Is Not Access, Emmanuel Asamoah
Arrival Is Not Access, Emmanuel Asamoah
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
This thesis presents a group of sculptures and installations that explore how material, labor, and communication shape unequal access in diasporic life. It questions the common belief that movement, visibility, or relocation automatically leads to stability, care, or belonging. In my experience, arrival does not guarantee access. Using clay, steel and found materials, I create tension between softness and control. Many of these materials are worn and discarded. I cut and rebuild them, leaving marks of strain and repair visible rather than hiding them.
Repetition appears through rows of cast faces and a collection of telephones. These forms suggest shared …
Social Support And Mental Wellbeing Among Veterinary Clinic Employees, Madison Koons
Social Support And Mental Wellbeing Among Veterinary Clinic Employees, Madison Koons
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Mental wellbeing is a significant concern for veterinary professionals and the subject of much discussion in the veterinary and academic fields. To determine whether social support is an effective protective factor for the mental wellbeing of veterinary professionals, I administered a survey to 879 veterinary clinics in Ohio, with ninety-two responses received for final analysis. The scales assessed mental wellbeing, organizational support, and nonorganizational support. I found organizational support, friends support, and family support to be positively correlated with mental wellbeing. Significant other support was not correlated with mental wellbeing. A linear regression evaluating social support as predictors of mental …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Introduction: Despite the growing demand for palliative care, this specialized medical care remains severely underutilized, with almost 50% of countries worldwide lacking access. Given that misperceptions and stigma continue to hinder progress in healthcare policy, this study aims to examine the relationships between palliative care knowledge, attitudes, and receptiveness to better understand how public health communication can enhance awareness and understanding of the topic in Singapore. Applying the adapted knowledge-attitude-practice (KAP) model, it further extends theory by examining the moderating role of media information-seeking between knowledge and receptiveness. Methods: Mixed-mode surveys involving 1,226 participants (926 online and 300 in-person respondents), representing …

Understanding the genetic control of fruit composition traits in interspecific grapevines (Vitis spp.) is crucial when breeding new cultivars with desirable fruit chemistry. To address this, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using 587 genotypes derived from three elite selections. This study spanned 3 years (2020–2022) and with phenotyping conducted at three different timepoints within each season for a total of nine phenotyping events focused on nine fruit traits. Several strong and stable quantitative trait locus (QTL) associations were identified on chromosomes 6, 16, and 17 across multiple phenotyping events for most sugar- and acid-related traits. Notably, putative sugar …

Promoting Methane Reductions Through Behavioural Nudges And Informational Boosts: A Field Choice Experiment In Japanese Rice Farming, Shengyi Du, Katsuya Tanaka, Hiroki Sasaki, Tetsuya Horie, Shinya Horie
Center for Public Service Publications and Reports
Agricultural methane emissions represent a significant contributor to global climate change, with irrigated rice cultivation beingone of the primary sources. Despite the availability of effective mitigation technologies, their adoption often remains limited dueto behavioural and institutional constraints. Water management practice that extends drainage periods during cultivation cancurb methane emissions from irrigated rice at low cost, yet uptake among Japanese farmers remains modest. We surveyed 2219rice producers in Shiga Prefecture using a labelled choice experiment that embedded two behavioural nudges (social norm andloss aversion) and one informational boost (knowledge enhancement), presented with or without a reminder. Farmers most fa-voured a 7-day …

With rapid progress in wireless communication, the need for advanced frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) that operate efficiently at high frequencies is growing. This study presents sustainable, high-performance FSSs by laminating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) film filters, laser-patterned with millimeter-scale apertures, onto ul tralight cross-linked CNF foams (aerogels). These biogenic FSSs cover a broad frequency range from 60 GHz to 0.51 THz. Added biochar enhances film conductivity, while metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) improve foam dielectric properties and surface area. The resulting foams exhibit near-air permittivity (εr ≈ 1.01) and low loss tangent, confirming their suitability as high-frequency substrates. The patterned CNF films enable tuning …

A convergent mixed-methods design was utilized to collect and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data. Data sources included educator surveys, family surveys, and focus group interviews, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of communication practices from multiple stakeholder …
Narratives Of Dis-Ease: A Genre Study Of Pathography, Sylvelyn Jo A. Almanzor
Narratives Of Dis-Ease: A Genre Study Of Pathography, Sylvelyn Jo A. Almanzor
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This essay establishes pathography as a distinct genre of creative nonfiction, tracing the development, form, and cultural significance of this body of literature. I have broadly defined it as narratives on personal experiences of Gabriel Marcel's "dis-ease"—covering and critiquing the human understanding and experience of sickness, pain, and grief—which has evolved from autobiographical narratives and life-writing of patients and medical professionals to a recognized form of creative nonfiction. This study will analyze the genre's structure, themes, and rhetorical strategies with consideration to cultural significance and how it negotiates the human understanding of suffering, healing, and societal attitudes toward existence and …
Gregor Samsa’S Pagkagimata (Awakening) In Bikol: A Becoming-Minor In Translation, Victor John M. Loquias
Gregor Samsa’S Pagkagimata (Awakening) In Bikol: A Becoming-Minor In Translation, Victor John M. Loquias
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
Kristian Cordero’s translation of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis instantiates what the philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari call minor literature. Preferring the Bikol term Pagkagimata—the literal event of Gregor Sama’s becoming-animal in the novel as title of the translation and the utilization of the Rinconada Bikol language for the transformed Samsa—Cordero has typified a perspective of translation that challenges the popular view of fluent translation from the source text to the target language. Exemplifying the concept of becoming-minor of Deleuze and Guattari and deploying Lawrence Venuti’s notion of the “remainder,” An Pagkagimata ni Gregor Samsa exhibits a deterritorialization of Bikol …
Intimate Partner Violence And Couples Who Practice Power Exchange: Exploring Discussions Of Harm In Bdsm Writing, Delilah Tefertiller
Intimate Partner Violence And Couples Who Practice Power Exchange: Exploring Discussions Of Harm In Bdsm Writing, Delilah Tefertiller
Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Senior Honors Papers
The current tools and services available for those who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) center power and control as negative influences that lead to coercive control (Stark, 2007) and harm. However, the BDSM and kink community negotiate and play with power dynamics in ways that defy current ideas about "healthy relationships." There is, therefore, little known about the perspectives of those who experience IPV in BDSM contexts. Additionally, current IPV tools are not adapted to fit a community that views power differently. A content analysis of BDSM 101 texts—a subgenre of BDSM literature that introduces and educates newcomers about …
Mapping A World’S Fair: A Comparative Analysis Of Native American Experience At The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Margaret Jones
Mapping A World’S Fair: A Comparative Analysis Of Native American Experience At The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, Margaret Jones
Mendel Sato Research Award Projects
This brief attempt to look into a few historical moments has demonstrated how quickly and dramatically the possibilities open to Native American people in the St. Louis region have changed over time. In 1904, to be a Native person standing at the entrance to the 1904 World’s Fair could mean a number of things, perhaps simultaneously: you were a tourist, you were returning to land you had been Indigenous to, you were visiting a part of the country you had never seen before, or you were a Native person at the largest celebration of American colonialism ever organized. Reimagining Civic Readiness: Middle School Teachers’ Definition And Perceptions Of The Importance Of Civic Readiness, Razak K. Dwomoh
Reimagining Civic Readiness: Middle School Teachers’ Definition And Perceptions Of The Importance Of Civic Readiness, Razak K. Dwomoh
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This article examines how middle school social studies teachers define “civic readiness,” how teacher motivation shapes civics instruction, and why middle-level civics is integral to engaged citizenship. The paper presents teachers as “curricular instructional gatekeepers” and argues that civic readiness (preparedness/willingness) differs significantly from civic competence (mastery) in terms of meaning, scope, and outcomes, proposing a four-staged pathway from readiness to engagement, then development, and finally to competence. It further provides an overview of three interrelated concepts (academic readiness, college readiness, and career readiness) to juxtapose civic readiness within the larger literary discourse. The …

Making Social Studies Work In The Age Of Ai, Angelo Letizia
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The purpose of this paper is to first outline a more embedded stance toward AI use, which I have labeled invisible philosophy and history as DNA and use this embedded framework as a backdrop for a more concrete discussion of skills and dispositions in regard to the use of AI in the social studies classroom and beyond. This dual positioning, one more theoretical and one more concrete, calls attention to the fact that AI should not simply be seen as some flashy tool divorced from a more nuanced and embedded understanding of its role in society. A list of practical …
