The Effect Of Cerebral Somatosensory Network Priming On Language Function In Chronic L-Mca Ischemic Stroke: A Companion Case Study, Mandelin E. Wollesen

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Chronic aphasia following a left middle cerebral artery (L-MCA) stroke is often associated with limited recovery beyond the acute phase, necessitating interventions that target neuroplastic mechanisms. This study examined the effects of somatosensory pneumotactile stimulation paired with cognitive-linguistic tasks on functional language performance in an individual with chronic aphasia. Using a single-subject pre-post design, the participant completed a 10-week intervention protocol involving repeated pneumotactile stimulation via the GALILEO system combined with language and motor tasks. Outcomes were assessed using standardized measures, discourse-based language samples, oral reading, repetition, and phonemic verbal fluency. Discourse was analyzed using Correct Information Units (CIUs), words …

Technology-Based Challenges To The Law Applicable To Trade Interdiction During Armed Conflict At Sea: The Law Of Naval Warfare And Convoy Operations, Rob Mclaughlin Apr 2026

Technology-Based Challenges To The Law Applicable To Trade Interdiction During Armed Conflict At Sea: The Law Of Naval Warfare And Convoy Operations, Rob Mclaughlin

International Law Studies

The practice of convoy involves the concentration of a group of merchant vessels under the control and direction of warships and military aircraft for the purpose of protecting it from belligerent capture or attack. The practice has often been described as obsolete, but asserting the demise of the convoy has been as regular as it has been premature. It is fitting that this operational practice be subject to an updated legal treatment and identification of new legal challenges. This article seeks to reassess the law applicable to convoys based on the consequences of certain post-1945 technological developments. It notes that …

From Street Level To Science: Advancing Methods For Climate Walks To Improve Human Thermal Comfort, Kevin Lau, Cho Kwong Charlie Lam, Eduardo Krüger, André Santos Nouri, Zhikai Peng, Daniele Santucci, Andreas Matzarakis Apr 2026

From Street Level To Science: Advancing Methods For Climate Walks To Improve Human Thermal Comfort, Kevin Lau, Cho Kwong Charlie Lam, Eduardo Krüger, André Santos Nouri, Zhikai Peng, Daniele Santucci, Andreas Matzarakis

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Urban heat risk is increasing, while fixed monitoring networks remain too sparse and coarse to resolve the pedestrian-scale variability, especially radiative loads, that governs outdoor thermal stress. This short communication advances the concept of climate walks, defined as route-based, human-centred field campaigns that build on earlier work on “thermal walks”, and presents them as a practice-ready methodology for design-relevant evidence. We define climate walks as structured, route-based, georeferenced assessments that pair high-resolution mobile microclimate measurements with synchronous in-situ human responses to capture transient, spatially heterogeneous conditions along actual walks. We synthesize key methodological features, such as dynamic, stop-and-go protocols; human-centred …

Effective Community Awareness Strategies For Nonprofit Sustainability And Performance, Lina Gabrielle Rugova

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The absence of formalized governance, measurement systems, and standardized processes in nonprofit organizations can limit performance, accountability, and long-term sustainability. Nonprofit executive leaders and board members are concerned about fulfilling their responsibilities for organizational effectiveness and community social effectiveness. Grounded in the Baldrige Excellence Framework and the resource-based view theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies nonprofit leaders use to improve organizational performance and governance effectiveness. The participants were six organizational leaders and board members from a Canadian nonprofit training organization. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analysis of organizational documents, and were …

Psychosocial Experiences Of Custodial And Caregiving Grandparents With Adjudicated Violent Offending Grandchildren, Clifton George Burns Jr Apr 2026

Psychosocial Experiences Of Custodial And Caregiving Grandparents With Adjudicated Violent Offending Grandchildren, Clifton George Burns Jr

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Primary caregivers of teenage violent offenders play a vital role in identifying and addressing safety concerns, providing emotional and financial support, and meeting individual developmental and psychosocial needs. As more grandparents assume the role of primary caregiver, the need for targeted interventions to support their emotional and psychosocial health continues to grow, emphasizing the increasing importance of population-specific support for grandparents caring for their grandchildren. Problems arise when grandparents take on this role without access to interventions or resources that are designed for caring for adjudicated teen violent offenders. This qualitative generic study involved exploring emotional challenges faced by custodial …

Lived Experiences Of Shingles Vaccine-Hesitant Adults Over Age 50 In Riverside County, California, Michelle Beatrice Loomis Apr 2026

Lived Experiences Of Shingles Vaccine-Hesitant Adults Over Age 50 In Riverside County, California, Michelle Beatrice Loomis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Shingles (herpes zoster) causes substantial morbidity, especially among adults over age 50 in the United States. There is a need to better understand the reasons behind low vaccination rates among adults over age 50 given the associated risks for infection and adverse health outcomes that can reduce their quality of life. This qualitative interpretative phenomenological study explored how individuals’ perceptions of the benefits, barriers, susceptibility, and severity of shingles influence vaccine intentions and identified what factors influence vaccine uptake. The health belief model was used to guide the study. Data were collected from one-on-one semistructured virtual interviews with eight adults …

Mean Length Of Stay Based On Original, Financial, And Vision Workflows, Richard Wyatt

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The healthcare industry faces a persistent challenge to balance financial, vision-based, and regulatory goals while maintaining the capacity to serve the public. Healthcare leaders need to understand the impact of using a particular type of workflow redesign to improve their ability to manage patient satisfaction, costs, and length of stay (LOS). Grounded in the Baldrige Excellence Framework, the purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental, comparative study was to compare runtime LOS across encounters for three workflows: original (WF-O), time/cost-based (WF-F), and vision-based (WF-V). The data set included 1 year of intensive care unit admissions from the Physio.Net database. ANOVA was conducted …

Beyond The Certificate: Why Real Expertise In Investigative Interviewing Comes From Practice, Alan Saquella Apr 2026

Beyond The Certificate: Why Real Expertise In Investigative Interviewing Comes From Practice, Alan Saquella

Publications

In today’s professional environment, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, training and certifications are often treated as the gold standard of competence. Profiles are filled with credentials, badges and completed courses that signal expertise. But in fields like investigative interviewing, there is a critical distinction that too often gets overlooked: the difference between being trained, being certified, and being truly effective.

This is a message to colleagues across security, law enforcement, corporate investigations, and intelligence: training is only the beginning. Certificates validate exposure. Application, repeated, disciplined, and ethical application is what creates mastery.

Addressing Legal Uncertainties In Article Versions And Institutional Copyright Policies To Support Immediate Public Access To Federal Grant-Funded Publications, Yuanxiao Xu Apr 2026

Addressing Legal Uncertainties In Article Versions And Institutional Copyright Policies To Support Immediate Public Access To Federal Grant-Funded Publications, Yuanxiao Xu

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

New federal public access policies—mandated by the 2022 OSTP Memo and already adopted by several key federal grant-making agencies—require authors funded by federal grants to deposit peer-reviewed publications for immediate public access. This paper explains how grant- receiving institutions and their affiliated authors can dispel legal uncertainties and comply with the new public access policies. Section I delineates how valid prior licenses enable public deposit of manuscripts notwithstanding later publishing agreements transferring copyright to the journals. Section II discusses the different versions of a manuscript created during the publication process. Section III describes the different types of third-party contributions incorporated …

Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller Apr 2026

Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller

Duke Law Journal

From cases spanning gun rights, reproductive freedom, religious liberty, and personal jurisdiction; to separation of powers and other structural features of the Constitution, courts increasingly rely on tradition to guide their decisions. Often, judges appeal to tradition in a vaguely empirical way, as “facts to study, not convictions to demonstrate about,” in the words of Justice Antonin Scalia. Yet, for a claim that purports to be factual, there’s very little agreement, or even analysis, about what renders this factual assertion—tradition—true or false. This Article tackles that basic issue.

Part I surveys the ways in which courts use tradition in different …

Bdcd: A Comprehensive Brain Disease Cell-Cell Communication Database, Xinyi Liu, Citu Citu, Wendao Liu, Nitesh Enduru, Andi Liu, Chia-Hao Tung, Zhongming Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Dysregulated cell–cell communication (CCC) is increasingly recognized as a driver of brain disease pathology, contributing to neuroinflammation, synaptic dysfunction, and neurodegeneration. Nevertheless, existing resources remain limited in brain specificity, regional coverage, and functional annotation. To address this gap, we develop the Brain Disease Cell-cell communication Database (BDCD), the first comprehensive resource focused on CCC networks across major brain diseases. BDCD integrates 38 manually curated datasets, comprising 8 519 425 single cells from single-cell RNA-seq studies and 140 744 spots from spatial transcriptomic maps, spanning 14 brain regions and 13 canonical cell types covering Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, …

Percy Green: A Legacy Of Tactical Innovation And Leadership In St. Louis' Black Freedom Movement, Christopher M. Fletcher

Dissertations

Abstract

This study explored Percy Green’s efforts against systemic racism, his innovative protest tactics, leadership qualities and principles, and his lasting impact within the Black Freedom Movement in St. Louis, Missouri, throughout the 1960s and 1970s. A qualitative single-case approach was utilized, analyzing archival records, interviews, a documentary about Green’s activism, newspaper articles, and Green’s own documentation of his work in the movement—all examined through thematic analysis. This process revealed key themes related to Green’s activism. The findings showed that Green employed non-violent, creative, and provocative protest tactics, including civil disobedience and direct action. These strategies revealed hidden racial inequalities, …
