Our Magnitude And Bond: An Ethics Of Care For Art Museum Education, Dana Carlisle Kletchka
Our Magnitude And Bond: An Ethics Of Care For Art Museum Education, Dana Carlisle Kletchka
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This work responds to contemporary concerns about the future of art museum education and public practice and art museums more broadly in the wake of a global pandemic that has, at present, killed more than a million people in the United States and sickened millions more. I respond to questions posed by the board of the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education in relation to the theme of Inclusion Invasion, expand upon the relations between art museums and communities posited by a post-critical, socially responsive museological framework, and explore the potential for a feminist philosophical Ethics of Care …

The Body Knows: Embodiment And Whiteness A Rhetorical Analysis Of White Bodies Engaged In Antiracism Work, Otsego County, New York, Kerry Lynn Mess
Theses - ALL
Multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion, equity, antiracism, belonging… The humanities, social sciences, and rhetorical scholarship have all slowly given attention to questions of race and racism. Situated at the intersection of somatic psychology and rhetorical studies, this thesis uses a somatic theory lens to explore how symbolic systems, specifically language and bodies, are intertwined to understand the embodied or material effects of racism we have not yet accounted for. I borrow Karma Chávez’s language of “abstract” and “actual” (2018) to observe the rhetorical dynamics, patterns and strategies, of white bodies accounting for themselves and apply Resmaa Menakem and Douglas Robinson’s somatic theories …
The Creative Link: Creativity, Resilience, Connection And Story, Elisha Stasko
The Creative Link: Creativity, Resilience, Connection And Story, Elisha Stasko
Theses - ALL
This study examines the intersection between the theories of Campbell's 'The Hero'sJourney,' Brown's 'Rising Strong,' and Catmull's 'Creativity, Inc..' and the experiences of various photographers who have undertaken projects on motherhood. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes books, interviews, blog entries, documentaries, articles and artist statements to identify patterns and themes. The study finds a consistent pattern of challenge, risk, vulnerability, and struggle, resulting in growth and connection. It concludes the creative process has parallels to patterns of resilience and the narrative arc and can facilitate connection with self and others. By recognizing this pattern in a variety of …
Theaters Of The Intimate: The Feminine Culture Of Self-Care On Tiktok, Rayana Weller
Theaters Of The Intimate: The Feminine Culture Of Self-Care On Tiktok, Rayana Weller
Theses - ALL
In this thesis, I study the feminine culture of self-care on TikTok as it exists in prominent digital genres: skincare and soft living. These two genres represent the aspiration toward a soft perfection of both the physical self and the space around it. Situated within the theories of the female complaint (Berlant, 2008) and the paradigm of perfection (McRobbie, 2015), I argue that feminine culture on TikTok reframes the demanding and unending labor required to approximate standards of feminine perfection as a pleasing and satisfying experience of self-care. Self-care rhetoric on TikTok disguises the discipline required to pursue cultural definitions …
“They Need To Hear Our Voices:” Youth Dialogue, Participatory Research, And Educational Inequity In Central New York, Lauren Eleanor Ashby
“They Need To Hear Our Voices:” Youth Dialogue, Participatory Research, And Educational Inequity In Central New York, Lauren Eleanor Ashby
Theses - ALL
While youth are active participants in urban and educational spaces, young people’s lived experiences are understudied in geography. In this study, I investigate the ways that youth in Central New York understand, communicate, and navigate their schools and neighborhoods through ethnography and participatory research. Situating the city of Syracuse contextually, this study uncovers the way that youth know and enact the spaces of their daily lives, and the impacts of external reputations and relational systems on how these spaces are navigated. I investigate these themes through two case studies. The first is the Common Ground Dialogue program, a school-based intergroup …

Towards Decolonization: Migrated Kenyan Archives And The Politics Of Knowledge Production, Joy Nyokabi Karinge
Theses - ALL
“Towards Decolonization: Migrated Kenyan Archives and the Politics of Knowledge Production” examines ethical questions of archival removal in relation to access to knowledge and the politicization of access. Utilizing a theoretical framework of postcolonial theory, decolonial theory, and epistemic decolonization, this study investigates Kenyan archival holdings within the Foreign and Commonwealth Office files at The National Archives in London and the East African Archives at Syracuse University. Analysis of these archives is conducted using qualitative methods of archival research and interviews. This research reveals British colonial efforts to protect its reputation by migrating, concealing, and destroying archives and to preserve …
Contingencies In Classrooms: A Systematic Review Of Contingent Reinforcement For Academic Performance, Taylor Jean Hitchings
Contingencies In Classrooms: A Systematic Review Of Contingent Reinforcement For Academic Performance, Taylor Jean Hitchings
Theses - ALL
Contingency-based reinforcement interventions, in which students receive a reward for engaging in desired behaviors, have been used to target various behaviors at school. Previous research studies’ findings suggest that contingency-based reinforcement interventions can be used to target a variety of behaviors, including task engagement, appropriate classroom etiquette, and academic performance across a variety of subjects. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the assessment and intervention practices of 98 studies (from 1969 to 2021) that examined the effects of contingency-based reinforcement interventions when academic performance was directly targeted in the areas of math, reading, writing, spelling, and English …
The Passing Intensities Of A Neighborhood. Sensing Atmospheres In La Boca, Gabriel Tomas O'Rourke
The Passing Intensities Of A Neighborhood. Sensing Atmospheres In La Boca, Gabriel Tomas O'Rourke
Theses - ALL
The neighborhood of La Boca, located in the city of Buenos Aires, is an urban space burdened with a story and a unique aesthetic that differentiates it from other barrios in the city. In 2022, I visited this area to walk its streets, with the goal of understanding what elements marked this urban area as a distinctive place in the city. Situated within the rhetoric of space and place, this study relies on the concept of atmospheres developed by Gernot Böhme to account for the way the experience of place is constituted by an interplay between bodies, materiality and spaces. …

The Politics Of Care: An Analysis Of The Lives And Stories Of Black Birth Workers In New York City, Mayannah Beauvoir
Theses - ALL
“The Politics of Care: An Analysis of the Lives and Stories of Black Birth Workers in New York City'' examines the complex relationship between Black birth workers and the state. Black birth work, traditionally, has existed as resistance to state policies and actors that limited Black women’s reproductive freedom. In New York City, where Black maternal mortality and morbidity outcomes are comparable to the national average, the state has mobilized to produce the Citywide Doula Initiative, a program designed to provide free birth worker support to families in financial need. Considering the violent relationship between birth workers and the state, …
The Utopian Quest: A Visual And Cultural Exploration Of Ideal Lands, Lingyin Luo
The Utopian Quest: A Visual And Cultural Exploration Of Ideal Lands, Lingyin Luo
Theses - ALL
This thesis explores the concept of utopia across different cultures, analyzing the ideal lands in Eastern and Western societies. The author categorizes utopian ideals into two types: Thomas More-style utopias, which aim for social and political perfection, and Arcadian ideals, which prioritize individual inner peace and escape from society. The author compares the ways of entering, the environments, the lifestyles, and the consequences of leaving mentioned in these stories to identify the visual language involved. These visual elements of ideal lands provide a solid foundation for the author's visual thesis, a video game that allows players to build their own …
Associations Between Parental Separation In Adolescence And Romantic Relationship Quality In Emerging Adulthood, Chloe Ludden
Associations Between Parental Separation In Adolescence And Romantic Relationship Quality In Emerging Adulthood, Chloe Ludden
Theses - ALL
Abstract Parental separation can impact multiple aspects of an individual’s life, including romantic relationship satisfaction (Amato, 2010). Albert Bandura’s social learning theory suggests that children model their behavior based on their parents’ example, which means those whose parents separate may adopt similar relationship practices that lead to their eventual separation with their romantic partner– this could contribute to the pattern of divorce being more common in those whose parents’ divorced (Amato & Deboer, 2001; Bandura, 1977; Ross & Mirowsky, 1999). It is important to interrupt this pattern to prevent the cycle of negative impacts of parental divorce on children being …
Macroproblems Require Microsolutions: The Case For Microgrids In The U.S. Energy Infrastructure, David Howie
Macroproblems Require Microsolutions: The Case For Microgrids In The U.S. Energy Infrastructure, David Howie
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper explores the shortcomings of the modern United States Power Grid in the face of climate change and worsening climate conditions, and seeks to explore how alternative styles of power grids could be viable replacements for current designs. The power grid is one of the most fundamental aspects of modern life, without it there would be no reliable energy supply to power devices and machinery. Oftentimes when energy generation is discussed in the United States, it only focuses on the source of generation for the energy, not the transmission of the energy. The lack of complete discussion around this …

Pórtate Bien Con La Maestra And Early Childhood Maker Education: How The Border Questions Quality, Heather G. Kaplan, Diane E. Golding
Pórtate Bien Con La Maestra And Early Childhood Maker Education: How The Border Questions Quality, Heather G. Kaplan, Diane E. Golding
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This paper troubles and retells the story of quality art education in a STEAM makerspace in an elementary school along the U.S.-Mexico border. Through questioning quality, we embrace the multivalent nature of belonging and the complexity of teaching art and researching with, among, and about others. Boundaries, borders, and belonging are explored through sites of conflicting quality. We consider the Mexican colloquialism ‘Pórtate bien con la maestra” along with progressive art education as antagonistic notions of quality that produce contrasting educational technologies and complicated notions of belonging, invasion, and settlement.

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this paper, graduate students in an art education course and their instructor share a project created in response to an exhibition focused on themes of food in their university art museum. Students worked in groups to create interventions designed to offer alternative ways to engage with works of art through experimentation, sensory experiences, participatory practices, and humor. These interventions expand the ways visitors can approach works of art and give openings for participants to include their own voices in the exhibition. They also illustrate the potential for university art museums serve as laboratories on campus that challenge traditional authoritative …

Creating Commons: Photovoice Philosophy In A Third Space, Jason M. Cox, Lynne Hamer
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Teach Toledo is a program that the authors co-coordinate using community assets to create a third space to confront systemic racism’s impact on teacher education programs and facilitate hybridity (Bhaba, 1994). Diverse student cohort members use their lived experience as the base for their individual and shared urban educational philosophies, coordinated in a first-year horizontally and vertically integrated curriculum including written compositions and a PhotoVoice project. “Creating commons” refers not only to provision of a third space as a common space where private experiences can be combined to create a hybrid, new understanding, but also to the creative act of …
Implementation Of A Decision Aid To Increase The Rate Of Routine Breast Cancer Screening Among Women Between 50 To 74 Years Old At A Federally Qualified Health Center, Dana Mars

At a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), where the project occurred, the rate of breast cancer screening in 2021 (64%) was lower than the target set by the Healthy People 2030 (77%). This quality improvement project aimed to increase the rate of routine breast cancer screening among women aged 50-74 years old in the FQHC.
Methods: Previous studies have reported that decision aids on breast cancer screening …
Implementation Of Readmission Prevention Pathway To Reduce Skilled Nursing Facility Readmission, Bina Darai
Implementation Of Readmission Prevention Pathway To Reduce Skilled Nursing Facility Readmission, Bina Darai
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Background: Individuals admitted to Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) are at risk of preventable hospital readmissions due to complex medical issues. Evidence indicates that many residents are transferred from SNFs to the hospital at least once. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services penalizes facilities with high rehospitalization rates. Implementing an evidence-based strategy could reduce 30-day readmission rates in this setting.
Local problem: This project was conducted in a 34-bed Sub-Acute Care Unit in an SNF. The unit's 30-day readmission rate was high compared to the average rate at the SNF and the national benchmark, identifying a need to reduce readmission. …

Current treatments for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity do not reliably achieve long-termweight-loss and up to 50% of patients experience nausea and vomiting. Thus, there is a critical need for obesity medications that provide glycemic control with enhanced weight loss and without sideeffects. We recently reported on the development of EP45, a first in class monomeric peptide drug, which displayed glucoregulation and profound weight loss in rats, and an absence of visceral malaise in shrews, a mammalian model capable of vomiting (unlike rats). By targeting multiple weight-loss and glucoregulatory pathways simultaneously with a single drug, GEP44, we can …
Synthetic Studies On Small Molecule Src Homology 2 Domain Containing Inositol 5’Phosphatase (Ship) Modulators And Studies Towards The Design And Synthesis Of A Ship Protac, Shawn Dormann

The PI3K pathway is a biological pathway of great importance to the biomedical community. PI3K and mutations associated with it have often associated as the cause for various disease states due to its role in signaling other enzymes such as AKT. Targeting PI3K is one way to help regulate the PI3K pathway but there are other enzymes such as SHIP that also contribute to the delicate balance of the cell. It has been proposed that the modulation of SHIP could also provide some therapeutic benefit as its behavior opposes that of PI3K. Detailed in this work is the design and …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of Embedding Learning Strategies Into Developmental Mathematics Curriculum, Jessica J. Harnly
Dissertations - ALL
More than two-thirds of first-year community college students require remediation in reading and/or mathematics before they can take college-level courses. Among these underprepared students who take the recommended developmental mathematics courses to become college-ready, less than one-third successfully complete these courses, posing a barrier to their access to a college education. Developmental education has been criticized and has undergone various institutional reforms, but limited research has investigated the mathematical perspectives of community college students in developmental mathematics courses. The two research questions that I investigated were: what effects does taking a developmental mathematics course that incorporates learning and study strategies …

The purpose of this anthropological research is to examine and analyze the intertwined geopolitical complexities of the lived sexual, reproductive, and maternal health and healthcare experiences of female Congolese refugees in flight. These experiences are examined at three pivotal points of refugee flight: during protracted conflict and violence, in displacement, generally in neighboring East African countries, and during resettlement in Western contexts. Data were collected using two anthropological methodologies - targeted life history interviews and semi-structured qualitative ethnographic interviews. Supplemental data from related studies, reports, and literature reviews were also used for population-level information. Collected data were analyzed through the …

After the Revolutionary War, the United States struggled to be recognized by the various global powers throughout the Atlantic World. The American propensity for claiming a neutral trade status, often led to conflict with other nations who were warring with one another. Particularly during their early years, the United States was challenged by Great Britain, the French, and the Barbary powers in the Mediterranean. Relying heavily on maritime trade and contracts, the United States needed to prove that, even without Britain backing them, they were a country worthy of these contracts and treaties. Presented as a social history of the …
Marginalization In The Future Of Work: The Role Of Intersectional Identities And Platforms In The Trajectories Of Online Freelancers, Isabel Munoz
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation examines how platforms and identity attributes such as gender, race and occupation mediate individuals’ evolving participation and outcomes in online freelancing. I approach the investigation through an intersectionality lens to build insight into the dynamics of workers’ identity attributes and how these are embedded in online freelancing platforms. The research design draws on a longitudinal panel study with 108 online freelancers, working on Upwork.com. More than 400 interview and survey responses as well as secondary platform data are incorporated in the study’s analysis. Findings illuminate that platforms reinforce and exacerbate gender, race and occupation stereotypes. Data also demonstrate …

Eradicating persistent bacterial infections is an ever-growing problem in the medical field. Conventional antibiotics are becoming less effective against persistent infections in tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, Lyme disease, device-associated, urinary tract, gastric and pneumonia still remains a problem. Left untreated, the persistent infections have the potential to increase mortality, morbidity, and the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria. One major mechanism that contributes to the failure of current antibiotic treatment is the formation of persister cells. Persisters are formed when bacterial cells undergo phenotypic changes and enter dormancy which enables their survival under lethal doses of antibiotics. As phenotypic variants, persister formation …
