The Impact Of A Social Emotional Learning Integrated Curriculum On Student Social Emotional Competencies, Karrah Lucht May 2023

The Impact Of A Social Emotional Learning Integrated Curriculum On Student Social Emotional Competencies, Karrah Lucht

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

In recent years, education has been especially concerned with the rise in student mental health concerns. Issues such as low academic achievement, disturbing behaviors, conflicts amongst students, low self-esteem, and lack of social and emotional support amongst other concerns, have led to the notion that social emotional learning (SEL) needs to be incorporated into students’ education in order to combat some of the serious issues students are facing while trying to navigate their education. This study makes the claim that SEL can be easily incorporated into the everyday curriculum already used by educators no matter their background in SEL and …

Student Perceptions Of Co-Teaching, Megan Berg May 2023

Student Perceptions Of Co-Teaching, Megan Berg

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to attain information on middle school students’ perspectives of co-teaching based on their experiences in co-taught classrooms. Co-teaching is a commonly used practice, generally between a special education and general education teacher, to support and meet the needs of all learners in a diverse classroom. Because inclusive classrooms are composed of students with and without disabilities, the individual expertise of general and special educators is essential in constructing a harmonious co-teaching partnership (Jurkowski & Muller, 2018; Ritter et al., 2020). According to Kirkpatrick et al. (2020), when co-teachers work together to share their knowledge …

Barriers That Impact International/Foreign-Born Practical Nursing Students’ Completion Rate In A Diploma Program Located In A Community College In The Midwestern United States, Joy Seymour

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Thousands of international students leave their countries of origin each year to pursue higher education in the United States. These students left their homelands to pursue higher education, which helped change the trajectory of their lives and the lives of their families. Although some of these students have high hopes and aspirations of completing their programs of studies, the literature review showed that they experienced barriers, such as English language, financial, culture shock, and unfamiliar teaching and learning pedagogies. This qualitative phenomenological research study aimed to identify self-reported barriers that impacted the completion rate of international/foreign-born students pursuing the Practical …

A Phenomenological Study On Single Parents’ Experiences And Engagement As Their Child Attends Elementary School, Samantha Gort

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The popularity of parental involvement in school systems has risen since the Elementary Secondary Education Act (ESEA) came into effect. However, there is a lack of research on how single parents navigate parental involvement and the struggles they face juggling jobs, multiple children, and stress with a lack of support. This research is guided by the following questions: What are the perceptions and beliefs of parental involvement for single parents with their child attending elementary school? How do single parents experience this first year? What support do single parents receive from the school system?

A phenomenological study using a construct …

IMPACT OF MATERNAL FETAL TRIAGE INDEX ON EMERGENCY HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

An Abstract of the DNP Scholarly Project by

Samantha Shepard

Care of obstetrical patients in non-delivering facilities is increasing. Obstetrical service availability in rural areas has decreased by more than 50% in recent years, according to Hung et al. (2018). Healthcare providers in these areas lack confidence and competence due to lack of regular training and encounters with obstetrical patients. The Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI) provides a standardized approach for triaging the obstetrical population. The purpose of this project was to determine if staff confidence and competency improves within …

Feasibility Analysis Of Aeronet Lunar Aod For Nighttime Particulate Matter Estimation, Kwang Nyun Kim, Seung Hee Kim, Sang Seo Park, Yun Gon Lee

Institute for ECHO Articles and Research

Several studies have attempted to estimate particulate matter (PM) concentrations using aerosol optical depth (AOD), based on AOD and PM relationships. Owing to the limited availability of nighttime AOD data, PM estimation studies using AOD have focused on daytime. Recently, the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) produced nighttime AOD, called lunar AOD, providing an opportunity to estimate nighttime PM. Nighttime AOD measurements are particularly important as they help fill gaps in our understanding of aerosol variability and its impact on the atmosphere, as there are significant variations in AOD between day and night. In this study, the relationship between lunar AOD …

Illumination Metric For Location Value, Navigation, And Parking Convenience, Yan Mayster

Defensive Publications Series

Poorly illuminated driving or walking routes may be unpleasant or less safe. Current digital map and navigation applications do not explicitly factor illumination conditions into the navigation metric. This disclosure describes techniques to build a knowledge base of illumination of road segments and parking locations based on pre-existing data sources such as aerial/overhead imagery and street-level imagery. The knowledge base can be utilized for navigation route determination that takes into account illumination conditions, as well as for longer term decision making such as assigning scores to physical properties that can help users make property rental or purchase decisions.

Commentary On Return Preparer Obligations, Michael B. Lang May 2023

Commentary On Return Preparer Obligations, Michael B. Lang

Florida Tax Review

A complex web of overlapping rules of law and professional ethics regulates the work of return preparers. Some of this complexity reflects the overall complexity of the tax system and the transactional activity to which it applies. Some of the complexity occurs because returns are prepared by members of different professions. The fact that preparers, depending on their professional status, are subject to discipline by the Director of Practice of the Internal Revenue Service, by the AICPA, by state bar and accounting regulatory authorities, under the penalty provisions of the Code, and perhaps through malpractice and contract law, is nonetheless …

End Of Life In The Ed – Brain Death And Organ Transplantation, Madison Cohen, Robert Griffin, Donald Penney May 2023

End Of Life In The Ed – Brain Death And Organ Transplantation, Madison Cohen, Robert Griffin, Donald Penney

Research Day

Brain death is defined as the irreversible loss of all brain and brainstem functions. While the criteria for diagnosing brain death have been established and refined since 1995, physicians remain uncomfortable with making the diagnosis leading to delays in pronouncing the patient as brain dead. While seemingly benign, a delay in pronouncing a patient as brain dead can place a financial burden on the family and cause additional and unnecessary emotional distress. Furthermore, delayed pronunciation of death causes improper delegation of the medical care team's resources and loss of the patient's potential to serve as an organ donor. The purpose …

The Influence Of Nutrition On The Gut Microbiota And Psychiatric Disorders: A Review, Megha Bhagavan, Francis Jenney May 2023

The Influence Of Nutrition On The Gut Microbiota And Psychiatric Disorders: A Review, Megha Bhagavan, Francis Jenney

Research Day

The symbiotic harboring of gut microorganisms within the gastrointestinal tract has a profound influence on host physiology, well-being, and disease pathology. More specifically, the gut bacteria are able to interact with dietary components from foods chosen by the host and consequently relay their beneficial or precarious effects locally and systemically. The gut bacteria have the capacity to maintain a healthy gut microbiome or perpetuate intestinal imbalance, known as gut dysbiosis. Gut dysbiosis has both local effects in gastrointestinal pathologies, such as intestinal bowel syndrome (IBS) and intestinal bowel disorder (IBD), as well as systemic pathologies, such as type II diabetes, …

Say That Again? Student Growth In Communication Through Conflict Management, Jillian Bailey, Diana Petrucello May 2023

Say That Again? Student Growth In Communication Through Conflict Management, Jillian Bailey, Diana Petrucello

Research Day

Objective: Effective communication is a characteristic that is required of clinicians but is difficult to teach. Students were challenged in their communication practices by placing them into non-complimentary communication style groups to help develop more effective, professional communication.

Methods: Students were given a communication social style test (i.e., "SELF profile") that divided individuals into one of 4 categories (S, E, L, and F) to help them identify how they best relate to others. The test rates individuals' responses in levels of introversion versus extroversion and task versus relationship communication preferences. Results from the profile were used to place students in …

U.S. Federal Income Taxation Of U.S. Branches Of Foreign Banks: Selected Issues And Perspectives, Yaron Z. Reich May 2023

U.S. Federal Income Taxation Of U.S. Branches Of Foreign Banks: Selected Issues And Perspectives, Yaron Z. Reich

Florida Tax Review

The title of this article notwithstanding, the United States does not in fact tax the U.S. branches of foreign banks;' branches are not regarded as distinct entities for most federal income tax purposes. Rather, the United States taxes foreign corporations (including banks) that are engaged in a trade or business within the United States on taxable income that is effectively connected with the conduct of that U.S. trade or business.

In addition to exploring the nature of a branch for federal income tax purposes, this article considers in some (but by no means comprehensive)detail certain selected aspects of the concept …

American Sign Language Legal Interpretation Complications: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Linguistic Barriers Within The Criminal Justice System, Katherine R. Doan May 2023

American Sign Language Legal Interpretation Complications: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Linguistic Barriers Within The Criminal Justice System, Katherine R. Doan

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

The founding documents of the United States of America tend to be rather universal and impartial in their vernacular. Because all citizens of a nation are deserving of the same rights and privileges regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or disability status, accommodations must be provided to the Deaf to give them equal access to information throughout interrogations, trials, and police interactions. While it may seem obvious that interpreters should be provided during legal situations involving a Deaf individual, visual communication can make legal interactions quite complicated when police or attorneys can only reveal limited details. When Deaf culture involving expansion …

The Future Of Integrated Air And Missile Defense (Iamd) Against China, Carl Rehberg May 2023

The Future Of Integrated Air And Missile Defense (Iamd) Against China, Carl Rehberg

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Over the last two decades, China's People's Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF) and other PLA entities have provided the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with a complex array of offensive capabilities, focused primarily on the U.S., allies, and partners in the Pacific. There has been explosive growth in ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, supersonic cruise missiles, hypersonic weapons, HGVs, and other threats. These salvo attacks are explicitly designed to attack theater air bases, seaports, and other facilities critical to U.S. military operations. These PLA weapon systems undermine U.S. security assurances with its allies and partners. They could incentivize China to strike first …

The Future Of The Cyber Theater Of War, Elizabeth Cook May 2023

The Future Of The Cyber Theater Of War, Elizabeth Cook

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Few could imagine how it would develop when the air was the new theater of war. The literature showcases that a lack of imagination and state-level institutionalized power structures, particularly in the U.S., hampered the progress of air as a new theater of war both in thought and application. Today, a similar lack of imagination on the cyber theater of war is a great source of insecurity in the world system; it sets the stage for strategic shocks like the ones to the U.S. on December 7, 1941, and 9/11. To avoid this, states should imagine how a convergence of …
