From An Unlikely Place, Brittany Borcher May 2023

From An Unlikely Place, Brittany Borcher

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

From an Unlikely Place, a collection of eight ambitious paintings created while in residence at the University of Arkansas, examines the intersections of landscape painting, gendered gaze, feminine experience and the language of abstraction. One of the challenges I faced while working on this project was finding points of connection between verbal and visual language. As an artist, I consider where vulnerability, sensitivity and generosity intersect my work and am curious about the strange potential an individual's visual language; in my case, a concoction of abstract and figurative forms has to communicate the quality of experience. When placed together on …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rice stink bug, (RSB), Oebalus pugnax (F.), (Fabricius 1775) is the major pest of headed rice, Oryza sativa L. in the southern rice producing states. The evaluation of current insecticides is imperative to efficient and economical RSB management for rice growers. Multiple reports of field failures with lambda-cyhalothrin have been documented since 2019. Lambda-cyhalothrin has been the standard for RSB control for the past two decades. The objective for this research was to determine if RSB is becoming resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin in Arkansas, and the most economical insecticide choice for growers with respect to RSB control and grain quality. RSB …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tobacco thrips are an important pest in Mid-South cotton production. Thrips are a pest of seedling cotton, feeding on the leaf tissue of plants which can result in stunted growth, delayed fruiting, loss of apical dominance, and possible stand loss. Field studies were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate Thryvon, a new transgenic trait in cotton that produces the Bt toxin Cry51Aa, for control of tobacco thrips. Thryvon cotton was tested at three locations in Arkansas: Marianna, Tillar, and Keiser. These studies evaluated thrips control on ThryvOn vs non-ThryvOn cotton and the effect of insecticide seed treatments on ThryvOn …

Primary knee osteoarthritis is a common diagnosis found in people over 65 years of age. As a progressive disease, the burden on daily life is significant. Typically, patients complain of knee pain, stiffness, and swelling which worsens after prolonged sitting resulting in reduced participation in activities of daily living.

Locally, many patients with symptomatic knee OA are seen at a geriatric primary care clinic in West El Paso, Texas. Current practice in the clinic was to use methylprednisolone acetate 40 mg and referral to physical therapy for patients 65 years or older when the treatment plan included an intra-articular injection. …

Multimodal Pain Management For Surgical Inpatients, Erik A. Garcia May 2023

Multimodal Pain Management For Surgical Inpatients, Erik A. Garcia

Cohort XI

Introduction

Multimodal pain management has been recognized as the most effective modality and the gold standard for pain management for more than a decade. However, these protocols remain poorly utilized and are applied inconsistently. This has led to inferior pain management, poor outcomes, and an increased risk of opioid dependence or addiction. In this project, I sought to address the utilization of multimodal pain management in an inpatient surgical service. A ten-day review of patient care revealed that pain management provided to patients on our service was inadequate and might be improved by adopting and implementing more consistent and systematic …

The Perceived Impact Of The Use Of African American Vernacular English In A Sales Situation, Cameron Sumlin

Doctoral Dissertations

According to William Raspberry “Good English, well-spoken and written, will open more doors than a college degree. Bad English will slam doors you didn’t even know existed.” This dissertation examines the use of Standard American English (SAE) vis-à-vis African American Vernacular English (AAVE) in a sales situation. This dissertation is grounded in the Stereotype Content Model (SCM) and its two dimensions, warmth and competence. This research reveals the perceived influence that a particular dialect has on stereotype activation, through warmth and competence in a personal selling situation. This study extends marketing and sales literature by specifically focusing on AAVE vis-à-vis …

The Giannis Effect: How Celebrities Impact Prejudice In Their Communities, Mason Bosley

Economics Honors Projects

This paper examines the effect Giannis Antetokounmpo, a Greek-Nigerian NBA player for the Milwaukee Bucks, has had on bias towards immigrants and Black people in Milwaukee and in Wisconsin as a whole. This work is based on the breakthrough 2021 study from Alrababa’h et al., which found that Liverpool FC’s signing of star Muslim footballer Mohamed Salah dramatically reduced public instances of islamophobia in Liverpool. Using Synthetic Control (SC) and Synthetic Difference in Difference (SDID) frameworks, I implement two methods of analysis to examine Giannis’s influence: an examination of Anti-Black and Anti-Immigrant hate crimes in the US, and analysis of …

Examining Representation Of Gifted Students In An Urban Gifted Education Program Through The Lens Of Social Capital Theory And Culturally Relevant Leadership, Zakisha N. Brown May 2023

Examining Representation Of Gifted Students In An Urban Gifted Education Program Through The Lens Of Social Capital Theory And Culturally Relevant Leadership, Zakisha N. Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

Gifted education has been permeated with discrepancies in representation since its inception. Despite efforts to minimize the gifted gap, under identification of minority groups continues. A gifted student’s social capital and a school district’s execution of culturally relevant leadership may impact underrepresentation. Therefore, an instrumental case study was implemented to understand, through a social capital and culturally relevant leadership lens, how gifted policy impacts representation of students in a gifted education program in an urban school district. Gifted identification relies heavily on teacher recommendations, which is why it is essential to understand educators’ perceptions of giftedness when investigating underrepresentation. Twenty …

Achieving Health Equity In Connecticut: An Examination Of The Role Of Local Health Departments, Jhinelle Dawson May 2023

Achieving Health Equity In Connecticut: An Examination Of The Role Of Local Health Departments, Jhinelle Dawson

Health Science Doctoral Thesis

Health equity refers to the opportunity for every person to be as healthy as possible. Unfortunately, people of color continue to face differences in health outcomes and are negatively impacted by health inequities. Local health departments (LHDs) are positioned to address health equity as these departments provide core services that improve community health. The Connecticut Department of Public Health created the Healthy Connecticut 2025 framework, which outlines strategies that address the social determinants of health (SDOH) that in turn influence health inequities. However, it is unclear what LHDs in Connecticut are doing to address the SDOH. Therefore, this study investigated …
