Acquitted By Reason Of Paroxysmal Insanity? Science And Gender In The Nineteenth-Century Murder Trial Of Mary Harris, Emmalee Morgan May 2023

Acquitted By Reason Of Paroxysmal Insanity? Science And Gender In The Nineteenth-Century Murder Trial Of Mary Harris, Emmalee Morgan

History Honors Program

The acquittal of Mary Harris in 1865 demonstrates the culmination of new social and scientific ideologies through the strategy of her defense counsel and the utilization of expert medical witnesses. While at the same time, the prosecutorial strategy embodied the opinions of gender and insanity that were being phased out.

The aim of this project is to demonstrate the overlap and reciprocal influence of science, law, and society, with narratives of gender acting as consistent undertones in these three realms. The trial and acquittal seem to fall in line with the idea that the insanity plea is a sham — …

Civil War Journalism: Two Rough Drafts Of One History, Brianna Collora May 2023

Civil War Journalism: Two Rough Drafts Of One History, Brianna Collora

History Honors Program

This paper addresses journalism in the Civil War by analyzing both Northern and Southern reporting. The severity of censorship changed throughout the duration of the war, with it less harsh in the Union by the end. Southern officials did not censor as much, both because their resources were scarcer, and their officials were more opposed to the use of censorship. While past historians have argued that the decrease in Northern censorship is because the Union began to have the upper hand in the war, I argue that the decrease in Union censorship was not only because the Union was now …

Comedy, Contagion, And Confinement In Bo Burnham’S Inside, Zoe Barclay May 2023

Comedy, Contagion, And Confinement In Bo Burnham’S Inside, Zoe Barclay

English

Bo Burnham’s Inside was filmed by the former YouTube star, stand-up comedian, and director entirely alone in his guest house during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and released on Netflix. The comedy special is a mixture of skits, songs, and monologues loosely stitched together that question the role of comedy, provide a critique of the current socio-cultural moment, and give the viewer a glimpse into Burnham’s mind. Inside and The Inside Outtakes both engage with the themes associated with outbreak narratives and explore current social questions regarding privilege, accountability, consumption, and capitalism. Like other works of comedy, Inside takes …

Call For Eggs: An Exploratory Study On Cross-Border Egg Donation From Taiwan To The Us, Karen Chang

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies M.A. Final Projects

This paper sheds light on how Taiwanese egg donors and recruitment agencies engage with the transnational fertility industry. Taiwan, as a popular sending country of Asian ethnic egg donors to the US, has fostered a vibrant digital community consisting of egg donation agencies, agents, and previous and intended donors. Recruitment agencies employ social media to recruit donors by constructing carefree, easy, and highly rewarded narratives of cross-border donation trips. Donors utilize anonymous group chats and public forums to exchange information and manage the physical and mental risks within the donation process. Through a narrative analysis, I identified common patterns of …

Noticing And Focusing On Chemistry Deep Structure In Integrated Stem Design Challenges, Christopher M. Sgro May 2023

Noticing And Focusing On Chemistry Deep Structure In Integrated Stem Design Challenges, Christopher M. Sgro

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Integrating science and engineering has become a focal point for current research in science and STEM educational fields. Infusing engineering design as an application of scientific principles is beneficial, as it demonstrates an authentic, real-world application and allows for not only student engagement and enthusiasm, but also an avenue to learn and transfer science skills and content. In order to effectively transfer scientific principles and skills, students must first notice that science principles can inform the design, and then choose to apply those skills through focusing processes. While there has been previous studies that have investigated transfer as part of …

Petro Pasts And Solar Futures: An Exploration Of Critical, Creative, And Activist Solarpunk Discourse, Emma Gilliam '23 May 2023

Petro Pasts And Solar Futures: An Exploration Of Critical, Creative, And Activist Solarpunk Discourse, Emma Gilliam '23

Honor Scholar Theses

While some scholars in the subject of environmentalism may be familiar with the genre of petrofiction, the emerging genre of solarpunk is much less well-known by both academics and average readers alike. It occupies many of the same spaces as petrofiction, as a genre that grapples with modern society’s relationship to energy sources of oil and renewables. However, solarpunk differs from petrofiction in the fact that it goes beyond just a literary genre, reaching out into the worlds of art and activism simultaneously. Not only is the term ‘solarpunk’ used to refer to works of art and literature, but it …

Methodical Madness: How Adhd Affects Daily Life, Samuel Gonzalez '23 May 2023

Methodical Madness: How Adhd Affects Daily Life, Samuel Gonzalez '23

Honor Scholar Theses

Let me begin by saying that this project is not a kind of “self-help” document. While it may come off that way, that is not the primary objective of my project. My primary objective is to provide people with necessary, and in my opinion, essential information surrounding the experiences and struggles of daily life with ADHD. I am not here to make anyone feel guilty for treating someone with ADHD poorly, nor am I here to convince you that people with ADHD are the same as their neurotypical peers (spoiler alert, we aren’t). Additionally, this is not the kind of …

An Examination Of Parental Transmission On Young Voters’ Political Party Affiliation, Parenting Style Mediations, Kelly J. Truax '23

Honor Scholar Theses

This paper examines the relationship of parental transmission and young voter’s political affiliation by examining parental and offsprings’ political affiliations within the United States. Correlations between both maternal and paternal political affiliations with offspring political affiliations were significant. Paternal types of authoritative and permissive parenting acted as mediators of parental transmission. Examining literature from psychological, political science, historical, and sociological tests, the thesis explores how young voters’ develop their political affiliations. Suggestions from the text emphasize the importance of examining voters’ identities, historical events, and the priorities of the generation to understand young voters’ political behavior.

Resilience In Girlhood: An Analysis Of The Social Determinants Of Anxiety Disorders For Adolescent Girls, Maggie Sullivan '23 May 2023

Resilience In Girlhood: An Analysis Of The Social Determinants Of Anxiety Disorders For Adolescent Girls, Maggie Sullivan '23

Honor Scholar Theses

Anxiety disorders affect twice as many women as men and often begin in adolescence or young adulthood, which is a unique period of accelerated development and identity formation. Evidence points to social determinants of health (SDH) such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), socioeconomic status (SES), education, social media, and resilience that lead to this discrepancy. Girlhood is a distinct adolescence because girls face the effects of more ACEs, self-objectification, internalization of academic stress, and predisposition to low SES. This thesis summarizes research on the social determinants of anxiety for adolescent girls, utilizing a socio-ecological model and feminist research methods to …

The Domestic Worker In Latinx Fiction: The Discursive Formation Of Latinidad, Constance Von Igel De Mello May 2023

The Domestic Worker In Latinx Fiction: The Discursive Formation Of Latinidad, Constance Von Igel De Mello

English (MA) Theses

The figure of the domestic worker in Latinx and Latin American fiction is a prominent character, permeating multiple genres and geographic locations. Post-colonial and feminist engagement with literature begs us to engage with the racialized and gendered constraints of this character in order to understand the borders of latinidad as based on the exclusion of certain bodies, predominantly black ones. Using the domestic worker characters from Julia Alvarez’s How the García Girls Lost Their Accents (1991) and Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones (1998), and underscoring their historical and socio-political background of Hispaniola, we can understand the embodied context of …

Spectator Noise Exposures During A Season Of Minor League Hockey, Sean Lloyd Hoverson May 2023

Spectator Noise Exposures During A Season Of Minor League Hockey, Sean Lloyd Hoverson

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

High levels of noise can cause temporary or permanent damage to our auditory system. This is commonly referred to as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) which is a type of hearing loss that occurs in the inner ear. There is evidence that attending or working at a single sporting event, including professional hockey, may contribute to the risk of noise-induced hearing loss. The risk of over-exposure to sound can be expressed in terms of various damage risk criteria (DRC) and risk of noise-induced hearing loss can be measured using four noise dosimetry protocols: the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA, 1983) …

Moral Objections To Pornography: Does The Reason For Opposition Affect Consumption?, Grant Parker May 2023

Moral Objections To Pornography: Does The Reason For Opposition Affect Consumption?, Grant Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent literature has suggested a link between self-described “problematic” pornography usage or pornography addiction and moral incongruence (Grubbs et al., 2022; Guidry et al., 2019). That is, when someone is morally opposed to pornography, they feel worse about their use of it. As of yet, however, no link has been established between specific reasons for objecting to pornography and their effects on consumption. Participants were 54 adults selected randomly using Amazon’s MTurk survey distribution platform. Respondents completed demographic questions and 6 scales measuring frequency of pornography use, objections to pornography, self-perceived problematic porn use, external and internal shame, God representations, …

With the rapid development of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), the traditional cloud computing architecture struggle to support the booming computation-intensive and latency-sensitive applications. Mobile edge computing (MEC) has emerged as a solution which enables abundant IoT tasks to be offloaded to edge services. However, task offloading and resource allocation remain challenges in MEC framework. In this paper, we add the total number of offloaded tasks to the optimization objective and apply algorithm called Deep Learning Trained by Genetic Algorithm (DL-GA) to maximize the value function, which is defined as a weighted sum of energy consumption, latency, and …

Quadratic Programming Based Partitioning For Block Cimmino With Correct Value Representation, Zuhal Taş, Fahreddi̇n Şükrü Torun May 2023

Quadratic Programming Based Partitioning For Block Cimmino With Correct Value Representation, Zuhal Taş, Fahreddi̇n Şükrü Torun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The block Cimmino method is successfully used for the parallel solution of large linear systems of equations due to its amenability to parallel processing. Since the convergence rate of block Cimmino depends on the orthogonality between the row blocks, advanced partitioning methods are used for faster convergence. In this work, we propose a new partitioning method that is superior to the state-of-the-art partitioning method, GRIP, in several ways. Firstly, our proposed method exploits the Mongoose partitioning library which can outperform the state-of-the-art methods by combining the advantages of classical combinatoric methods and continuous quadratic programming formulations. Secondly, the proposed method …

Unbiased Federated Learning In Energy Harvesting Error-Prone Channels, Zeynep Çakir, Eli̇f Tuğçe Ceran Arslan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Federated learning (FL) is a communication-efficient and privacy-preserving learning technique for collaborative training of machine learning models on vast amounts of data produced and stored locally on the distributed users. This paper investigates unbiased FL methods that achieve a similar convergence as state-of-the-art methods in scenarios with various constraints like an error-prone channel or intermittent energy availability. For this purpose, we propose FL algorithms that jointly design unbiased user scheduling and gradient weighting according to each user's distinct energy and channel profile. In addition, we exploit a prevalent metric called the age of information (AoI), which quantifies the staleness of …
