Natural And Anthropogenic Factors Affecting The Development Of Two Highland Agricultural Soils Of Bukidnon, Philippines, Guadalupe D. Calalang, Laurent Bock, Gilles Colinet, Vincent Hallet, Peter Walpole

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

This research was conducted in two highland areas of Bukidnon, Philippines: Miarayon, a sub-catchment of the upper Cagayan de Oro River; and Bendum, a sub-catchment of the upper Pulangui River. Due to their pyroclastic parent rock materials, soils in the upper Cagayan de Oro are classified as Andic Cambisol in open and convex positions, and Andic Umbrisol in concave and depressed positions. Soils in the upper Pulangui are classified as Pisoplinthic Acrisol, Ferralic Nitisol, and Acric Nitisol in areas with ultramafic rock parent materials, and Haplic Cambisol with pyroclastic deposits. Element contents in rocks were congruent to the total soil …

Finite Element Analysis Of A Coconut (Cocos Nucifera L.) Climbing Mechanism, Arjay O. Afan, Omar F. Zubia, Adrian A. Borja, Ralph Kristoffer B. Gallegos

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

A coconut climber mechanism was subjected to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to improve its overall design and analyze its strength characteristics. The von Mises stress, total deformation, and factor of safety were evaluated using static structural analysis for the seat and pedal assemblies of the mechanism. The design has a minimum yielding factor of safety of 7.03 for the seat assembly and 12.09 for the pedal assembly. If aluminum is used as an alternative to steel, the prototype's weight can be reduced to at least 64.56% without compromising its strength properties. The weight reduction by using aluminum is expected to …

Cubicom: Noisy Office Environment Communication Device, Nicholas Alan Maley, Joshua Michael Heeren, Alejandro Peña

Electrical Engineering

The CubiCom is a system that enables secure and clear communication between users in a noisy office space. It can function in any small cubicle within a 12 foot radius. The system consists of a series of wireless headsets for 6 users to transmit and receive audio, and a communication box that facilitates this process. These headsets are noise-dampening, preventing ambient sounds from interrupting conversation and making sure that all parties can hear each other clearly. Line-of-sight (L.O.S.) with each headset is required to have proper communication between users. This feature ensures no one outside of the room can eavesdrop, …

Audio Research Codec, Charlie Sutro

Electrical Engineering

Active Noise and Vibration Control (ANVC) systems are of increasing relevance as urban areas get more densely populated with people and their noise sources. Community noise is of great importance to many forms of transit that aim to bring mobility to a region with minimal subsequent noise pollution. Active Vibration Control (AVC) is an emerging field of research which can be employed to further mitigated unwanted harshness in an acoustic environment by extending the principals of Active Noise Control (ANC)to solid mediums using surface transducers and piezoelectric actuators.

The Audio Research Codec (ARC) is a compact, cost-effective system designed for …

Actually, You Don’T Have To Show Your Work: The Arkansas Court Of Appeals Tells Trial Courts That When They Award Attorneys’ Fees In Domestic Relations Cases, They Need Not Explain The Basis For The Awards Or The Basis For The Amount Of The Awards, Terrence Cain Jun 2023

Actually, You Don’T Have To Show Your Work: The Arkansas Court Of Appeals Tells Trial Courts That When They Award Attorneys’ Fees In Domestic Relations Cases, They Need Not Explain The Basis For The Awards Or The Basis For The Amount Of The Awards, Terrence Cain

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

Arkansas follows the “American Rule,” which is that each litigant is responsible for his or her own attorneys’ fees unless a statute says otherwise. This rule is not without exceptions, however, and one such exception is the “domestic relations exception,” which says that Arkansas’s trial courts have the inherent authority to award attorneys’ fees in domestic relations cases. Between 2016 and 2021, the Arkansas Court of Appeals decided cases with attorneys’ fees awards ranging from $14,190 to $36,284.60, which one judge of that court remarked evidenced an ever-escalating amount of fee awards in domestic relations cases.

At one point, when …

English Lexical Borrowings In Chabacano Television Newscasts: Categories, Patterns, Affixations, And Semantic Fields, Luis Roberto P. Soliman, Armand H. Lee Jun 2023

English Lexical Borrowings In Chabacano Television Newscasts: Categories, Patterns, Affixations, And Semantic Fields, Luis Roberto P. Soliman, Armand H. Lee

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Lexical borrowings refer to the borrowing of words from one language to another to fill in certain words that do not have a direct translation to the local language. The study is anchored in the phylogenetic change theory made by Hockett (2008) and the deficit hypothesis authored by Kachru (1994). The present study explores the words lexically loaned from the English language in the Chabacano language. Raw data were taken for analysis from Dateline Zamboanga, a local teleradyo program airing regularly on both television and radio broadcasts. The borrowed English words were then tallied and sorted based on lexical categories, …

The Filming Dilemma: The Potential Speech Cost Presented By Camera Coverage Of Defamation Cases, Alexandra M. Gutierrez Jun 2023

The Filming Dilemma: The Potential Speech Cost Presented By Camera Coverage Of Defamation Cases, Alexandra M. Gutierrez

Missouri Law Review

For the better part of the last century, journalists have used free press and free-speech principles to advocate for camera access to newsworthy trials. But it was not until 2022 that news organizations succeeded in broadcasting defamation proceedings, and—in the process—gave libel litigants a novel opportunity to present their stories both to jurors and to the public at large. Because news organizations are themselves frequent targets of defamation lawsuits, this development may not be a categorical good for the press. The filming of defamation proceedings could provide motivated litigants with one more incentive to sue real and perceived critics, insofar …

Local Candidate Roots And Electoral Advantages In Us State Legislatures, Charles Russell Hunt, Stella Rouse Jun 2023

Local Candidate Roots And Electoral Advantages In Us State Legislatures, Charles Russell Hunt, Stella Rouse

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

A growing literature has revealed a notable electoral advantage for congressional and gubernatorial candidates with deep local roots in their home districts or states. However, there is a dearth of research on the presence and impact of local roots in state legislative races. In this paper, we close that gap by demonstrating the consistent and significant electoral impacts that state legislators’ local roots have on their reelection efforts. We use data capturing a representative cross-section of state legislative incumbents (N = ~5,000) and calculate a novel index measuring the depth of their local roots modeled after Hunt’s (2022, Home …

Impeachment Vs. Indictment: How To Handle Criminality In The Executive Branch, Tiffany R. Murphy Jun 2023

Impeachment Vs. Indictment: How To Handle Criminality In The Executive Branch, Tiffany R. Murphy

Denver Law Review

Whether a sitting president can be prosecuted while in office has been a debated question with no clear answer. During Watergate and the Whitewater investigations, special and independent counsels struggled to decide whether to indict a sitting president. On one side, the Department of Justice (DOJ) guidelines prohibited indictment, on the other, prosecutors were concerned with potential harm to the rule of law if there was no indictment. In most circumstances, a president who engaged in criminal activities should face impeachment, as the Constitution mandates, rather than be subject to criminal proceedings while in office. The only exception is if …

Revisiting Rosenbloom: Can A Return To The “Matter Of Public Concern” Standard In Defamation Cases Quiet Sullivan’S Skeptics?, Amy Kristin Sanders

Missouri Law Review

As a vocal minority increasingly airs their displeasure with the actual malice rule the U.S. Supreme Court established in New York Times v. Sullivan, media defense attorneys find themselves searching for way to pushback against the possible erosion of a key First Amendment protection for free speech. This article calls for a reconsideration of the “matter of public concern” standard that a plurality of the Court promulgated in Rosenbloom v. Metromedia. The article outlines the chief concerns brought by those who wish to reconsider the requirement that public officials and public figures prove reckless disregard for the truth to recover …

The Five Internet Rights, Nicholas J. Nugent Jun 2023

The Five Internet Rights, Nicholas J. Nugent

Washington Law Review

Since the dawn of the commercial internet, content moderation has operated under an implicit social contract that website operators could accept or reject users and content as they saw fit, but users in turn could self-publish their views on their own websites if no one else would have them. However, as online service providers and activists have become ever more innovative and aggressive in their efforts to deplatform controversial speakers, content moderation has progressively moved down into the core infrastructure of the internet, targeting critical resources, such as networks, domain names, and IP addresses, on which all websites depend. These …

Adoption of unrelated young by adult birds is costly and therefore they should avoid it unless adoption carries compensating benefits. Loggerhead Shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) have a monogamous mating system with low rates of extra-pair paternity and biparental care of young. To date, no documented instances of adoption have been published in this species. In two small nesting populations in South Carolina, we documented six cases in three years in which an unpaired Loggerhead Shrike adopted a brood of apparently unrelated nestlings or fledglings, in some cases sharing provisioning duties with the brood’s mother and in two cases taking over care …

Marital Disharmony: Examining The Adverse Spousal Testimonial Privilege And Its Impact In Washington State, Sabrina Suen Jun 2023

Marital Disharmony: Examining The Adverse Spousal Testimonial Privilege And Its Impact In Washington State, Sabrina Suen

Washington Law Review

In Washington State, RCW 5.60.060(1) provides that “[a] spouse or domestic partner shall not be examined for or against his or her spouse or domestic partner, without the consent of the spouse or domestic partner.” This evidence rule, known as the adverse spousal testimonial privilege, allows a defendant to exclude witness testimony by their spouse under most circumstances. A product of common law tradition, this privilege stems from a time when the law treated women as chattel with no independent legal rights. Since Washington State codified the adverse spousal privilege, the United States Supreme Court amended the federal spousal testimonial …

Career Shock And Voluntary Turnover Intention Among Current Employees In The Public Sector, Charlena Miller Jun 2023

Career Shock And Voluntary Turnover Intention Among Current Employees In The Public Sector, Charlena Miller

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Attracting and retaining talent was identified as the most critical growth driver for 77% of U.S. executives in 2022, and they plan to increase investment in talent attraction and retention in the coming years (PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2022). The problem in supporting and guiding leaders’ investments in retention through existing turnover research and findings is two-fold. First, past research has primarily used data collection with “leavers” who have already left the organization, sometimes long after the turnover was experienced. Secondly, studies have focused on attitudes, satisfaction levels, employee attributes, and job features, which have shown poor predictive ability for voluntary turnover (Hom …

A Sky Full Of Stars: Should Viasat, Inc. V. Fcc Change The Agency’S Treatment Of Satellites As A Categorical Exclusion Under The National Environmental Policy Act?, Morgan Armstrong

Nebraska Law Review

Viasat, a Starlink competitor and multibillion-dollar provider of satellite services to rural areas, attempted to challenge this influx of Starlink satellites by demanding stricter environmental oversight through the FCC’s licensing process.8 Specifically, Viasat argued these satellite systems pose environmental harm to the orbital environment that, in turn, will directly harm Viasat’s operations. Viasat has challenged multiple orders granted by the FCC that allowed Starlink satellites to operate.9 Viasat brought suit asking for an injunction and, subsequently, an appeal when the injunction was denied on the most recent FCC order allowing Starlink to decrease the orbit for a subset of the …
