A Church Of The People: Coptic Church Building And Direction In Central New Jersey, Bishoy Garis
A Church Of The People: Coptic Church Building And Direction In Central New Jersey, Bishoy Garis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Building off Michael Akladios’ work on early Coptic migration and the ad hoc institutionalization of the Coptic Orthodox Church in North America, this dissertation proposes that the construction and direction of Coptic churches in Middlesex County, New Jersey was laity driven, ad hoc, reactive, and dependent on local variables. Additionally, it reveals that the creation of St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church in East Brunswick, New Jersey spurred migration to the Middlesex County area and transformed their small community into a domestic and international Coptic migration center. Unlike previous scholarship that places greater attention on urban Coptic communities and transnational networks, …
The Rise Of Text Analysis: Using Machine Learning To Explain The Variation In Going Concern Accuracy, Yimei Zhang
The Rise Of Text Analysis: Using Machine Learning To Explain The Variation In Going Concern Accuracy, Yimei Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Auditors are required to issue modified audit opinions if they have sufficient doubts about the client’s ability to continue as a going concern. These going concern opinions represent an important information resource for financial statement users to evaluate client performance, and are associated with a number of negative capital market outcomes (e.g. negative returns, increased cost of capital, etc.). Despite being used by capital market participants, going concern opinions are commonly plagued with Type I errors (false positive) and Type II errors (false negative), making them a particularly noisy measure. The purpose of this study is to determine whether machine …
Cultivating Joy: Play, Rest, And Connection In Regenerative Cycles, Tim D. Howe
Cultivating Joy: Play, Rest, And Connection In Regenerative Cycles, Tim D. Howe
Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers
As dominant systems continue to lean towards unsustainable patterns, fueled by models of white supremacy and capitalism, these paradigms can be challenged by prioritizing joy and wonder as essential inputs rather than measurable outcomes. This paper seeks to imagine the ways in which failing systems that promise eternal growth and insatiable power dynamics can be in part dismantled through creating the conditions necessary for joy to take precedence over productivity.
Working Paper No. 79, On The Emergence Of And Failures Of Cybernetics In The Soviet Union, Leah Herrera
Working Paper No. 79, On The Emergence Of And Failures Of Cybernetics In The Soviet Union, Leah Herrera
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that despite potentially offering significant efficiency gains leading to an era of intensive economic growth, cybernetics in the USSR fell short in being implemented because of a) lack of coordination between competing ministries; b) inadequate policies; and c) insufficient funding. Though the structure of government in the USSR appeared to be centralized and hierarchical, with economic and government plans and policies traveling from the top down, in practice, ministries acted more like heterarchies, leading to ministerial competition over the large cybernetic projects meant to reform the administrative command economy—from the mid-1950s through to the late …
Working Paper No. 82, The Importance Of The Cold War And Its Ending, Abraham Escudero
Working Paper No. 82, The Importance Of The Cold War And Its Ending, Abraham Escudero
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that the citizenry inhabiting the two superpowers derived benefits from the Cold War; advantages that appear to have diminished with the start of the Post-Cold War Era. In the 1930s the Great Depression brought into question the efficacy of the Western capitalist system. As a challenge, a Soviet model running on a revolutionary zeal associated with establishing a new society underscored Joseph Stalin’s super-industrialization drive. The citizenry of both superpowers, as well as citizenry around the world, would ultimately benefit from the competition for dominance, albeit with certain costs, especially for human rights. Shifts in …
Using An Approach-Avoidance Framework To Understand The Relationship Between Non-Lethal Weapons And Performance, Andrew J. Mojica, Christopher P. Bartak, Joseph N. Mitchell, Alan Ashworth
Using An Approach-Avoidance Framework To Understand The Relationship Between Non-Lethal Weapons And Performance, Andrew J. Mojica, Christopher P. Bartak, Joseph N. Mitchell, Alan Ashworth
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
It is proposed that performance degradation from exposure to non-lethal technology is mediated by impulsive and reflective approachavoidance motivation. An approach-avoidance motivational framework was used to specify a four-stage information processing model that predicts performance degradation. The first stage is Evaluation: it processes physiological, sensory, perceptual, and cognitive information. The second stage is Comparison: it processes the content of the Evaluation into avoidance and approach motivational indices. The third stage is Probability: it processes information from previous stages into a probability of choosing to continue or abandon goal-directed behavior. Finally, the fourth stage is Performance: it processes performance accuracy on …

Indigenous Economies In Wisconsin: The Impact Of Allotment Policies And The Indian New Deal, 1800s – 1930s, Kyle Davis
Indigenous Economies In Wisconsin: The Impact Of Allotment Policies And The Indian New Deal, 1800s – 1930s, Kyle Davis
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Indigenous peoples in Wisconsin experienced many significant economic changes during their history. Currently, there are eleven federally recognized tribal nations within the Badger State. Americans forced the Oneida and Stockbridge-Munsee peoples to move west, while the Menominee, Bodewadmi, Ho-Chunk, and Ojibwe homelands in Wisconsin preceded European settlement. This thesis looks at the histories of the Oneida, Stockbridge-Munsee, Menominee, Bodewadmi, Ho-Chunk, and six Ojibwe reservations in Wisconsin and the transition of economic dependence on seasonal natural resources to wages earned from tourism between the late 1800s and the Indian New Deal in 1934. Indigenous peoples have relied on seasonal economies that …
Working Paper No. 80, On W. Stanley Jevons And Britain’S “Coal Question”, Matthew Phan
Working Paper No. 80, On W. Stanley Jevons And Britain’S “Coal Question”, Matthew Phan
Working Papers in Economics
Nineteenth century Britain emerged as the center for the industrial world; with coal serving as the energy carrier which would prove itself as a key resource for powering Britain’s industry and for generating her prosperity. At the same time, coal served as a sector in which innovations were also being devised and introduced. This inquiry seeks to establish that one W. Stanley Jevons, an academic lecturing at the University of Manchester, expressed concerns regarding what he and some others phrased as Britain’s “coal question,” and took to addressing issues associated with its depletion. In so doing, Jevons’ writings would offer …
Pathways To Blunted Facial Affect In Negative Schizotypy: Social Motivation And Online Cognitive Resources, Tovah M.D. Cowan
Pathways To Blunted Facial Affect In Negative Schizotypy: Social Motivation And Online Cognitive Resources, Tovah M.D. Cowan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Schizotypy, a range of personality traits which confer liability for schizophrenia, is associated with significantly diminished social functioning and quality of life. Social dysfunction in all forms of schizotypy, including schizophrenia, is connected to blunted affect, or diminished expressivity, particularly facial expressions which are less frequent, intense, or long than typical. However, the mechanisms and treatments for blunted affect are, as yet, poorly understood and underdeveloped. In this project, two putative mechanisms of blunted affect were explored. The first involves cognitive load capacities, which are diminished in schizotypy, causing blunted affect – individuals do not have the cognitive resources to …

Covid-19: An Impetus To Reform Paediatrics Curriculum For Undergraduate Medical Students In Iraq, Mahmood Dhahir Al-Mendalawi
International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences
The beginning of COVID-19 infection in late 2019 in China and its global spread represent one of the stressful events of recent times. Apart from posing risks to the health, living, society, and economy, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated various aspects of medical education. In this article, we have highlighted the journey of paediatrics curricular reform in Iraq with a special emphasis on the need to reform in the era of the pandemic. The reform is essential to arm undergraduate medical students with the necessary competency to deliver adequate paediatric healthcare to the community should COVID-19 infection comes roaring back.

Successful Pathways To Undergraduate Completion, Tara M. Jones, Bryan Q. Patterson
Tapestry: Journal of Research in Education
This article explores the critical factors that led to successful college completion for Black men. By focusing on success factors from Black male college graduates' lived experiences, a roadmap to college success for this group may be shared with others to encourage increased degree attainment for this population. The lens for this study drew from Harper’s (2012) antideficit theory, which highlights students’ successes rather than problematic issues. A non-random approach of purposeful sampling from eight Black men from LinkedIn who had completed an undergraduate degree from a private, predominately White college in the southeast United States defined the sample size. …

In Defense Of Moving From A Music Production Curriculum To A Commercial Music Curriculum, Jeff Mccoy, Christopher Andrew Brown
In Defense Of Moving From A Music Production Curriculum To A Commercial Music Curriculum, Jeff Mccoy, Christopher Andrew Brown
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
The music industry has significantly evolved in recent years, largely due to the growth of newer forms of technology, such as distribution platforms and music production tools. With technological changes, academic institutions must understand the need to alter their curricula to better prepare students for the growing field of commercial music. Traditional music education programs emphasized classical music, music theory, and instrumental and vocal skills; however, students wanting to enter the world of commercial music need a broader range of knowledge, including business, marketing, copyright law, self-publishing, and music licensing as well as skills in operating various kinds of hardware …
