Latinx Students Higher Educational Trajectory Post Covid, Jonathan Felix-Martinez Jun 2023

Latinx Students Higher Educational Trajectory Post Covid, Jonathan Felix-Martinez

University Honors Theses

COVID-19 caused many universities to go fully remote during the pandemic. Many Latinx students did not know how to navigate online learning. This paper examines the experiences of Latinx students in their university experiences while online to determine if their higher educational trajectory changed as a result of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative project gathered data from 9 Latinx students using in-depth, in-person interviews. Recommendations are presented to help the university create resources that will help improve Latinx students' experiences within the context of online learning and the effects of the recent pandemic.

The Evolution Of Leadership During The Covid-19 Pandemic: An Analysis Of The Research, Luca Patrick Thierry Gregston Jun 2023

The Evolution Of Leadership During The Covid-19 Pandemic: An Analysis Of The Research, Luca Patrick Thierry Gregston

University Honors Theses

This paper's research question, "How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed the concept and practice of leadership? In the end much of the empirical evidence for what COVID-19 did or didn't change in leadership practices is still relatively ambiguous. So it is too early to say that "business as usual" is gone for good. And COVID furthered and deepened long term trends, accelerating the great resignation and a dramatic revaluation of intangible assets like reputation, intellectual property and human capital. In response, there is a clear need for a new leadership mindset for the 21st century after the COVID pandemic.

Network Tango: Examining State Dispositions Toward Attribution In International Cyber Conflict, Robert Riley Turner Jun 2023

Network Tango: Examining State Dispositions Toward Attribution In International Cyber Conflict, Robert Riley Turner

University Honors Theses

Cyberspace is an environment of international conflict often sought out due to its ability to create significant effects at little cost, and obfuscating the ready attribution of hostility. One avenue toward streamlining the attribution of hostile actions in cyberspace is the introduction of a due diligence of data transparency amongst states. This level of data transparency must somehow be incentivized. The following study surveys the geopolitical dispositions of three major powers that utilize cyberspace as a venue of conflict: The United States, China, and Russia; in order to determine how each nation might interact with an international due diligence of …

Designing Anchor Points, Andrew Hollinger Jun 2023

Designing Anchor Points, Andrew Hollinger

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Writing programs that offer a range of instructional modalities (such as online synchronous, online asynchronous, face-to-face [F2F], and hybrid) can find it difficult to maintain programmatic identity and instructional or course comparability across modalities. Part of the difficulty is that each delivery modality has specific material and pedagogical requirements for success. That is, an online asynchronous course must look, feel, and act differently than the F2F iteration of the course—which also means the online version cannot be simply the digital version of the F2F course. How, then, does a writing program develop and maintain itself as a “program” amidst so …

Ulama's Resistance To The Closing Of Worship Places During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Indonesia, Luthfi Hadi Aminuddin, Isnatin Ulfah, Siti Rohmaturrosyidah Ratnawati, Chafid Wahyudi

The Qualitative Report

PPKM Darurat (the implementation of community activity restrictions) is one of the policies implemented by the Indonesian government to control the spread of COVID-19. PPKM Darurat received opposition from ulama (Islamic religious leaders) because all places of worship had to be closed. Our qualitative study explores the forms, factors, and impacts of ulama’s resistance to the closing of worship places during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research data were collected through interviews with participating ulama. This study indicates that ulama’s resistance to the closure of places of worship during the PPKM Darurat period manifested in discourse and action. In …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Therapies to revascularize ischemic tissue have long been a goal for the treatment of vascular disease and other disorders. Therapies using stem cell factor (SCF), also known as a c-Kit ligand, had great promise for treating ischemia for myocardial infarct and stroke, however clinical development for SCF was stopped due to toxic side effects including mast cell activation in patients. We recently developed a novel therapy using a transmembrane form of SCF (tmSCF) delivered in lipid nanodiscs. In previous studies, we demonstrated tmSCF nanodiscs were able to induce revascularization of ischemia limbs in mice and did not activate mast cells. …

Beyond The Clock: Exploring The Complexities Of Women’S Domestic Roles In India Through The Lenses Of Daughters And Daughters-In-Law, Pushpendra Singh, Falguni Pattanaik, Archana Singh

Articles

This study aims to estimate the distribution of time spent on unpaid activities in India, with a focus on understanding the gendered nature of this work. The study seeks to contribute to the existing literature by providing empirical insights into the time spent on unpaid domestic activities by daughters and daughters-in-law, and by identifying the sociocultural and economic factors that contribute to this work. To achieve this objective, the study employs data from the Time Use Survey (TUS) conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in India from January to December 2019. The study uses a two-phase analysis to …

Impact Of Cultural Behaviour On Indoor Comfort: Examining The Air Quality In Homes And Exploring Observational And Experimental Methods Of Representation Through Filmmaking, B. K. Satish, Allister Gall, Sally Shahzad

School of Art, Design and Architecture

There is a limited understanding of householders' cultural differences and their impact on spatial organisation and energy behaviour in dwellings. Indoor air quality directly impacts the health and well-being of occupants. The airborne COVID-19 epidemic has highlighted shortcomings of controlled ventilation systems in recent reports (PHE, Dec 2020). While efficiency interventions can make homes more affordable to heat, they can exacerbate conditions such as asthma, due to reduced indoor air quality and ventilation. Preliminary research conducted in Plymouth by the applicant indicates that British Asians use their homes differently compared to native British in terms of spatial organisation, cooking habits …

Everyone Could Use A Little Entrepreneurial Resilience, Niamh Imbusch Jun 2023

Everyone Could Use A Little Entrepreneurial Resilience, Niamh Imbusch

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

This short opinion piece argues that entrepreneurial resilience is not confined to entrepreneurs; rather, it comprises a mix of personal, transversal skills which can be developed, and which may be to benefit of all students, regardless of discipline. It offers an invitation to third level educators to join a resilience pedagogy community of practice to share experiences and best practice.

Strengthening Tobacco 21 Implementation And Enforcement To Reduce Tobacco-Related Health Disparities: A Stakeholder Engagement Project., Summer Woolsey, Athena K. Ramos, Kaeli Samson, Delwyn Catley, Keyonna M. King, Rob Crane, Hongying Daisy Dai

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

INTRODUCTION: As a part of a priority-setting stakeholder engagement project to strengthen the impact of the federal Tobacco 21 (T21) law, we conducted a qualitative study to solicit input from a nationwide sample of tobacco control stakeholders regarding the implementation, enforcement, and equity implications of the T21 law.

METHODS: Following the T21 policy evaluation guidance developed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), we identified T21 experts in four domains: policy, evaluation, subject matter, and implementation from a national search of stakeholders (invitations, n=1279) to account for geographical variation. This study presents results from five focus groups conducted in December …

Parallel Play: The Simultaneous Professional Responsibility Campaigns Against Unethical Ip Practitioners By The United States And China, Mark A. Cohen Jun 2023

Parallel Play: The Simultaneous Professional Responsibility Campaigns Against Unethical Ip Practitioners By The United States And China, Mark A. Cohen

Akron Law Review

“Parallel Play: The Simultaneous Professional Responsibility Campaigns Against IP Practitioners by the United States and China” describes efforts by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the China National IP Administration to discipline trademark and patent practitioners through contemporaneous campaign-style approach directed to bad faith filings. At the USPTO, many of these bad faith filings have originated from China. In both countries, these bad faith activities have imposed significant burdens on IP agencies, the courts, and legitimate rights holders. The campaign is likely the largest professional responsibility campaign undertaken by an IP agency, and the largest cross-border IP disciplinary …

Under Nifty Light: Trademark Considerations For The New Digital World, Willajeanne F. Mclean Jun 2023

Under Nifty Light: Trademark Considerations For The New Digital World, Willajeanne F. Mclean

Akron Law Review

Three cases involving non-fungible tokens are grabbing the attention of fashionistas, intellectual property mavens, and metaverse cognoscenti alike. All three are cases of first impression, despite involving trademark infringement claims. All are considered to be cases that will determine whether old trademark principles apply to new technology, and each has compelling and competing arguments that may militate against findings of infringement. While most commentators have focused on the questions surrounding alleged infringement, very few have discussed the challenges of applying remedies, such as injunctions, traditionally used in trademark infringement cases.

This article considers trademark law and examines it in a …

Protecting Public Health Amidst Data Theft, Sludge, And Dark Patterns: Overcoming The Constitutional Barriers To Health Information Regulations, Jon M. Garon Jun 2023

Protecting Public Health Amidst Data Theft, Sludge, And Dark Patterns: Overcoming The Constitutional Barriers To Health Information Regulations, Jon M. Garon

Akron Law Review

Public health has grown to over $4.1 trillion in spending in the past year, yet for millions of people, their health care is ineffective and sometimes harmful. New technologies have improved health access and treatment, but they can expose an individual’s personal health information to theft and misuse. There is little or no regulation for the reuse of data once it has been lawfully collected for general purposes. Any observer can create a detailed personal diary of an individual or a population by building from a mosaic of inferential data—such as lawfully obtained zip code information, non-regulated health care application …

Subversive Cartography: Teaching Mary Prince And Saidiya Hartman, Carolina Hinojosa Jun 2023

Subversive Cartography: Teaching Mary Prince And Saidiya Hartman, Carolina Hinojosa

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This chapter utilizes Hartman’s methodology of retrieval to create a map1 in StoryMap JS2 (“the map” or “this map”) that analyzes multiple geographic spaces in The History of Mary Prince: A West Indian Slave Narrative and Saidiya Hartman’s Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route. The map is an archive or a witness to some of the geographical spaces Mary Prince lived (and was sold) as an enslaved woman seeking freedom and the places in which Saidiya Hartman has conducted research or visited in Ghana as a “free” woman. Layering the past over present creates a …

The Black Wanderer: Reading The Black Diaspora, Resistance, And Becoming In The History Of Mary Prince In The Classroom, Nicole Carr Jun 2023

The Black Wanderer: Reading The Black Diaspora, Resistance, And Becoming In The History Of Mary Prince In The Classroom, Nicole Carr

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This paper examines The History of Mary Prince as a pedagogical tool for exploring complexities within the Black Diaspora. As Paul Gilroy’s articulations of the Black Atlantic inform my approach, Prince’s circuitous journey through the West Indies and England situates her process of becoming as one mired in longing and loss. Encouraging students to consider Prince as a wandering soul in search of not only freedom, but also solid familiar connections lays the foundation for merging her narrative with other enslaved Black people traversing countries and regions on ships against their will. Ample research material available on the survivors of …

Black Lives, White Witnesses: An Argument For A Presentist Approach To Teaching Aphra Behn's Oroonoko, Sharon Smith Jun 2023

Black Lives, White Witnesses: An Argument For A Presentist Approach To Teaching Aphra Behn's Oroonoko, Sharon Smith

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay outlines a presentist approach to teaching Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko (1688), in which a white woman witnesses a Black man’s brutal execution at the hands of enslavers. This approach explores the capacity of Behn’s novel—a colonialist narrative scholars frequently identify as troubling or frustrating—to generate discussions about “white witnessing,” particularly white people’s consumption of images of Black people in peril. This includes recent videos of Black people killed by police or white citizen vigilantes. Many Black individuals identify these videos as traumatizing, frequently noting how they have failed to spur structural reform. Of central concern in the classroom discussion …

Chawton House And Its Library: Legacies And Futures, Kim Simpson Jun 2023

Chawton House And Its Library: Legacies And Futures, Kim Simpson

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In a review of Women’s Writing, 1660-1830: Feminisms and Futures, Paula Backscheider draws attention to “the miracle that is Chawton House, whose conferences nurtured these essays” in the collection. This essay will examine the legacy of this unique institution and explore the futures for the organization both as heritage site and as home to a substantial collection of women’s writing of the long eighteenth century. The community encouraged and nurtured by Chawton House since it opened to the public in 2003, as is so often the case with all things related to Jane Austen, complicates divisions between the academic …

“Before I Am Quite Forgot": Women’S Critical Literary Biography And The Future, Susan Carlile

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

“‘Before I am Quite Forgot’: Women’s Critical Literary Biography and the Future” extends the conversation about literary “worth” in the twenty-first century as it still judges and ignores women authors of the past. Specifically, this essay explores the role of women’s literary historical biography as a primary marker of worth and as a means of shaping legacy. I also discuss my (perhaps more non-traditional) experience—both my personal circumstances and particular material conditions—writing the critical biography Charlotte Lennox: An Independent Mind. Without a substantial biography that shows the scope of Lennox’s mind, her significant corpus, and her interventions in literary history …

The Internal Revenue Service And A Crisis Of Confidence: A New Regulatory Approach For A New Era, Donald B. Tobin Jun 2023

The Internal Revenue Service And A Crisis Of Confidence: A New Regulatory Approach For A New Era, Donald B. Tobin

Florida Tax Review

The Internal Revenue Service is not usually thought of as the agency charged with enforcing the nation’s campaign finance laws. It has found itself, however, at the center of a firestorm over both its involvement and its ineptitude in enforcing certain rules that regulate the campaign activities of tax-exempt organizations. For historical, legal, and practical reasons, the Internal Revenue Code regulates the political activity of tax-exempt groups, in some instances providing for disclosure of campaign donors and expenditures, and in other instances limiting the amount of political activity engaged in by tax-exempt organizations. As campaigns become more sophisticated and complicated, …

Concentrated Enforcement, Leigh Osofsky Jun 2023

Concentrated Enforcement, Leigh Osofsky

Florida Tax Review

When enforcement resources are limited, how should the scarce enforcement resources be allocated to increase compliance with the law? The answer to this question can determine to what extent the law on the books translates to the law in practice. A dominant school of thought in the tax literature suggests that they should be allocated based on a “worst-first” method, whereby the individuals likely to be most noncompliant are targeted. However, while “worst-first” methods can encourage all individuals to increase compliance so as not to be deemed the “worst,” they can also provide cover to engage in noncompliance that is …

What The Beps?, Yariv Brauner Jun 2023

What The Beps?, Yariv Brauner

Florida Tax Review

Unprecedented attention to aggressive international tax planning has shaken the earth under the most powerful players in the world of international tax policy design. The media exposure of what Bloomberg’s calls “The Great Corporate Tax Dodge,” combined with the ever-growing discontent of civil society with the magnitude of contribution of the largest multinational enterprises to the society within which they operate, has recently forced the politicians to take action. Leaders of the strongest world economies demanded a revision of the rules of the international tax regime that would generate more revenues for their challenged coffers and would restore public trust …

Revisiting The Tax Treatment Of Citizens Abroad: Reconciling Principle And Practice, Michael S. Kirsch Jun 2023

Revisiting The Tax Treatment Of Citizens Abroad: Reconciling Principle And Practice, Michael S. Kirsch

Florida Tax Review

In an increasingly mobile world, the taxation of citizens living abroad has taken on increased importance. Recent international administrative developments—most notably, the weakening of foreign bank secrecy and expansion of global information sharing norms—have further raised the profile of this issue. While U.S. law traditionally has taxed U.S. citizens living abroad in the same general manner as citizens living in the United States, a number of scholars have proposed abandoning the use of citizenship as a jurisdictional basis to tax. In its place, they would apply residence-based principles (i.e., exercising full taxing rights over U.S. citizens only if the citizens …

Reconceptualizing Citation Practices As “Feminist Memory”, Lc Santangelo Jun 2023

Reconceptualizing Citation Practices As “Feminist Memory”, Lc Santangelo

Feminist Pedagogy

Relying on feminist theory, this Original Teaching Activity foregrounds citation as celebration, rather than chore, to encourage students to rethink previous assumptions. In all, the lesson hopes to show students that citation connects scholars to one another and therefore merits our careful attention, at the same time it makes visible preconceived notions that limit how we define "scholarship."
