Prototyping A Novel Visual Computation Framework For Craft-Led Textile Design, Sylwia Orynek
Prototyping A Novel Visual Computation Framework For Craft-Led Textile Design, Sylwia Orynek
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
In traditional woven structures, longitudinal warp yarns are held in tension on a frame while transverse weft yarns are drawn through them. This arrangement secures the threads; how-ever, it also fixes them to one geometrical plane. Manipulation of the warp threads has the potential to enable a more flexible shaping of woven structures, enabling generation of freeform textile architectures. However, established textile notation methods and the im-plicit nature of a craftsperson’s knowledge restrict the availability of craft-led techniques of thread manipulation within cross-disciplinary undertakings. To address this, shape gram-mars are proposed as means for the systematization and dissemination of those …

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This research presents an interdisciplinary collaboration between design and chemistry researchers, which aimed to design and fabricate ultraviolet sensor prototypes using functional, 3D printed colour change material. Design and chemistry research streams each employed specialised knowledge and processes: design to engage users and to develop 3D printable concept designs; chemistry to synthesise a colour change material that could be integrated with 3D printing and to evaluate material outcomes. Mediating this collaboration was 3D printing technology and prototypes. These acted as boundary objects, which provided a stable condition at the boundary of each discipline’s expertise where information could be traded, and …

Pursuing Professional Learning By Using Social Media: How Do Instructional Designers Apply Self-Regulated Learning?, Pauline Salim Muljana, Tian Luo
Educational Leadership & Technology Faculty Publications
The instructional design and technology field are dynamic, requiring instructional designers to stay abreast through timely professional learning. Social media offers characteristics to collapse the time, geographical, and financial limitations of informal professional learning, but challenges exist. Continuous professional learning requires proactive actions, wherein self-regulated learning (SRL) plays an important role. However, not all professionals know the effective strategies to promote SRL skills. This study examines instructional designers’ (N = 17) experiences of professional learning on social media through an SRL lens. Data collected through semi-structured interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings include SRL strategies conducted by instructional designers …

A Leisure Model: Barriers And Black Womxn Collegiate Swimmers, Tiffany Monique Quash
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
There remains a gap in the literature about the experiences of Black Womxn Collegiate Swimmers (hereafter referred to as BWCS) and the application of the leisure constraints model. Whether research has been conducted with Black Womxn Swimmers enrolled in a swimming course while using an autoethnographic lens (Norwood, 2010) or the representation of one Black Womxn Swimmer from a Predominantly White Institution (Quash, 2018), minimal knowledge is known about this specific demographic representative of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and the barriers they experience. Using a qualitative methodological approach to understand the leisure constraints …

The direct effects of nuclear war would be horrific, with blasts, fires, and radiation killing and injuring many people. But in 1983, United States and Soviet Union scientists showed that a nuclear war could also produce a nuclear winter, with catastrophic consequences for global food supplies for people far removed from the conflict. Smoke from fires ignited by nuclear weapons exploded on cities and industrial targets would block out sunlight, causing dark, cold, and dry surface conditions, producing a nuclear winter, with surface temperatures below freezing even in summer for years. Nuclear winter theory helped to end the nuclear arms …

Art exhibitions, with a focus on water safety and drowning prevention, are rarely seen as a medium to address social justice and public health, or water safety awareness and drowning prevention efforts in communities. Globally, data have shown drowning is considered a “neglected public health threat” (World Health Organization, 2021, CDC, 2023). Additionally, reports have shown that across the globe there are demographic groups of people impacted by drowning, historical traumas, and social determinants, also impacting some communities that are at greater risk (WHO 2021, CDC, 2023). Although there are national and international efforts to address the importance of water …

Applications Of Seismic And Geodetic Data To Earthquake Hazard Research, Mahsa Afra
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Being a part of a seismically active zone, including large and crowded cities such asTehran, Qazvin and Semnan, Central Alborz experiences many local earthquakes. Knowl- edge of crustal velocity structure in this area is thus necessary considering its economical and political importance, a large concentration of population, and relatively poor construc- tion practice which increases the earthquake risks in this region. In second chapter of this thesis, we aim at obtaining the 3D crustal velocity structure of the Central Alborz region in northern Iran using local earthquake tomography. We also validate anomalies inferred from our velocity model using an independent …

This article provides an analysis of self-reported water competency skills at a Historically Black University (HBCU). A survey was administered to undergraduate students who lived on campus at one HBCU. Of the 254 respondents that reported the ability to swim, only 187 respondents self-reported the ability to swim and the ability to perform water competency skills. The biggest discrepancy occurred within individuals that identified as Black or African American. In this group, 142 out of 250 participants proclaimed the ability to swim. However, the number of Black or African Americans that could swim dropped to 84 when researchers operationally defined …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers
Fluoropyridine-based chemotherapy remains the most widely used treatment for colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, we investigated the mechanism by which the natural product Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin; HQ) and one of its main components baicalin enhanced 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) antitumor activity against CRC. Cell proliferation assays, cell cycle analysis, reverse-phase protein array (RPPA) analysis, immunoblot analysis, and qRT-PCR were performed to investigate the mechanism(s) of action of HQ and its active components on growth of CRC cells. HQ exhibited in vitro antiproliferative activity against drug resistant human CRC cells, against human and mouse CRC cells with different genetic backgrounds and …
A Comparison Of Voice And Gesture Across The First Two Years Of Life, Megan Burkhardt-Reed
A Comparison Of Voice And Gesture Across The First Two Years Of Life, Megan Burkhardt-Reed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation compared gestural and vocal communication in the development of language in early infancy/childhood. The work also has implications regarding the evolution of language. Since language is primarily vocal it might be assumed vocalization is the predominant communication in infancy and that the evolution of language also depended primarily on the evolution of vocal capabilities. But the primary literature actually favors primarily gestural language origins. The present work contradicts the primary literature. Study 1 examined rates of gesture and speech-like vocalizations, or “protophones”, in the first year of life. Infant protophones occurred more than 5 times more often than …

Teaching Content Methods In A High School Pds: Navigating Curricular Tensions, Richard Chant, Brian P. Zoellner
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
As secondary methods instructors, we seek to integrate our courses within the context of our partner high school and to engage its staff in helping prepare our students. State and district mandates, however, often conflict with the pedagogy and content that guides our methods courses. In short, these mandates, whose ultimate goals are to increase student scores on high-stakes tests (especially at Title I schools), frequently do not align with the best practices described in contemporary educational research. In this article, we examine a highly rated unit plan developed by one teacher education candidate within a PDS-based methods course in …

The Developmental Experiences Of Exemplary Statistics Teachers, Douglas Whitaker
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
There has been a trend of increased statistical expectations for students and calls for increased statistical preparation for their teachers in recent years, but preparation has not yet reached recommended levels. A similar preparation gap existed at the inception of the Advanced Placement Statistics program, and this study examines a group of statistics teachers identified as exemplary by experts in the field to determine what challenges they faced and how they overcame them. Semi-structured interviews using a Communities of Practice framework (Wenger, 1998) were conducted. The challenges and responses to those challenges are identified, and these have implications for supporting …

Reflections From A Graduate Student: Adapting Trauma-Sensitive Pedagogy In The Time Of A Pandemic, Dianne T. Wellington
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
During COVID-19, being a graduate student has been difficult. There are challenges in building and sustaining communities in digital spaces and other unforeseen difficulties. In these difficulties, we have students experiencing issues in addition to the pandemic and consequences of the underlying systemic problems that have worsened for marginalized groups and the systemic inequity inherent in the graduate education system. In any case, this paper is a mission from me, the graduate student, to articulate a few suggestions professors could add to the practice to center both student lives and academics through trauma-sensitive pedagogy.

Lingnan Theses (Doctoral degree)
The Chinese government’s Education Modernization 2035 plan puts forward goals for China to achieve education modernization and become an education powerhouse by 2035. As a cornerstone of education development, basic education internationalization is an essential part of the country’s educational reforms. In 2019, the Outline for the Development of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area explicitly called for building an internationalization education demonstration zone. However, in one of the cities in the Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen, the implementation of basic education internationalization has not been completely successful. The problem facing Shenzhen is that the traditional approach to internationalization, which is …
Examining The University Supports And International Students' Psychological Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic : A Case Study Of A University In Mainland China, Zeyu Kang
Lingnan Theses (Doctoral degree)
The higher education sector in China has attracted many university students from different countries since the 21st century, reflecting the flow of international students over recent years. The onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic was unprecedented to most of the world, especially for international students in China. These students had to rapidly adapt to the "new normal", which included significant changes to their academic and social lives. The impact of such changes on their overall well-being is a subject of research in China and globally. This study adapts Ryff's (1995) concepts of psychological well-being and Turner's (2009) stress process model as …
The Impacts Of Disability Policy And Its Implementation On Deaf University Students: An Applied Anthropological Approach, Tailyn Marie Osorio
The Impacts Of Disability Policy And Its Implementation On Deaf University Students: An Applied Anthropological Approach, Tailyn Marie Osorio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) has provided legal requirement for universities to provide accommodations for all disabled students, including deaf students. The ADA is intentionally vague to allow flexibility for how institutions implement accommodations provisions. This leads to high variability across universities. Using ethnographic data from policy analysis, semi-structured interviews and focus groups with accommodations coordinators and deaf students from a large-public university, this applied anthropological study aims to investigate the impacts of policy and policy practices on the experiences of deaf students while proposing interventions informed by the coordinators and deaf students themselves.
This study is …
