Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu Jul 2023

Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Backdoor attacks for neural code models have gained considerable attention due to the advancement of code intelligence. However, most existing works insert triggers into task-specific data for code-related downstream tasks, thereby limiting the scope of attacks. Moreover, the majority of attacks for pre-trained models are designed for understanding tasks. In this paper, we propose task-agnostic backdoor attacks for code pre-trained models. Our backdoored model is pre-trained with two learning strategies (i.e., Poisoned Seq2Seq learning and token representation learning) to support the multi-target attack of downstream code understanding and generation tasks. During the deployment phase, the implanted backdoors in the victim …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversational recommendation systems (CRS) aim to interactively acquire user preferences and accordingly recommend items to users. Accurately learning the dynamic user preferences is of crucial importance for CRS. Previous works learn the user preferences with pairwise relations from the interactive conversation and item knowledge, while largely ignoring the fact that factors for a relationship in CRS are multiplex. Specifically, the user likes/dislikes the items that satisfy some attributes (Like/Dislike view). Moreover social influence is another important factor that affects user preference towards the item (Social view), while is largely ignored by previous works in CRS. The user preferences from these …

18 Million Links In Commit Messages: Purpose, Evolution, And Decay, Tao Xiao, Sebastian Baltes, Hideaki Hata, Christoph Treude, Raula Kula, Takashi Ishio, Kenichi Matsumoto

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Commit messages contain diverse and valuable types of knowledge in all aspects of software maintenance and evolution. Links are an example of such knowledge. Previous work on “9.6 million links in source code comments” showed that links are prone to decay, become outdated, and lack bidirectional traceability. We conducted a large-scale study of 18,201,165 links from commits in 23,110 GitHub repositories to investigate whether they suffer the same fate. Results show that referencing external resources is prevalent and that the most frequent domains other than github.com are the external domains of Stack Overflow and Google Code. Similarly, links serve as …

Socialz: Multi-Feature Social Fuzz Testing, Francisco Zanartu, Christoph Treude, Markus Wagner Jul 2023

Socialz: Multi-Feature Social Fuzz Testing, Francisco Zanartu, Christoph Treude, Markus Wagner

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online social networks have become an integral aspect of our daily lives and play a crucial role in shaping our relationships with others. However, bugs and glitches, even minor ones, can cause anything from frustrating problems to serious data leaks that can have farreaching impacts on millions of users. To mitigate these risks, fuzz testing, a method of testing with randomised inputs, can provide increased confidence in the correct functioning of a social network. However, implementing traditional fuzz testing methods can be prohibitively difficult or impractical for programmers outside of the network’s development team. To tackle this challenge, we present …

Social Troubleshooting Workshops: Upskilling Students' Soft And Self-Reflection Skills, Sandra Schulz, Rita Garcia, Christoph Treude Jul 2023

Social Troubleshooting Workshops: Upskilling Students' Soft And Self-Reflection Skills, Sandra Schulz, Rita Garcia, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This poster focuses on workshops to support students’ soft and selfreflection skills during collaborative learning. These workshops intend to help reduce anxiety during group work and to promote inclusive and equitable collaborative learning environments. Unfortunately, single-paced instructional approaches are typically applied in learning environments [3] and do not consider students’ needs when learning nor provide soft-skills guidance that encourages equal participation. The workshops offer educator and student support for equitable group work through upskilling students’ soft skills, such as leadership and communication, that promote better teamwork. By assisting students in developing and practising soft and self-reflection skills, they might have …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Open source software (OSS) development offers a unique opportunity for students in Software Engineering to experience and participate in large-scale software development, however, the impact of such courses on students’ self-efficacy and the challenges faced by students are not well understood. This paper aims to address this gap by analyzing data from multiple instances of OSS development courses at universities in different countries and reporting on how students’ self-efficacy changed as a result of taking the course, as well as the barriers and challenges faced by students

Mdps As Distribution Transformers: Affine Invariant Synthesis For Safety Objectives, S. Akshay, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Tobias Meggendorfer, Dorde Zikelic Jul 2023

Mdps As Distribution Transformers: Affine Invariant Synthesis For Safety Objectives, S. Akshay, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Tobias Meggendorfer, Dorde Zikelic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Markov decision processes can be viewed as transformers of probability distributions. While this view is useful from a practical standpoint to reason about trajectories of distributions, basic reachability and safety problems are known to be computationally intractable (i.e., Skolem-hard) to solve in such models. Further, we show that even for simple examples of MDPs, strategies for safety objectives over distributions can require infinite memory and randomization. In light of this, we present a novel overapproximation approach to synthesize strategies in an MDP, such that a safety objective over the distributions is met. More precisely, we develop a new framework for template-based …

Question generation (QG) aims to automatically generate fluent and relevant questions, where the two most mainstream directions are generating questions from unstructured contextual texts (CQG), such as news articles, and generating questions from structured factoid texts (FQG), such as knowledge graphs or tables. Existing methods for these two tasks mainly face challenges of limited internal structural information as well as scarce background information, while these two tasks can benefit each other for alleviating these issues. For example, when meeting the entity mention “United Kingdom” in CQG, it can be inferred that it is a country in European continent based on …

Knowledge-Enhanced Mixed-Initiative Dialogue System For Emotional Support Conversations, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Yifei Yuan, Wai Lam Jul 2023

Knowledge-Enhanced Mixed-Initiative Dialogue System For Emotional Support Conversations, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Yifei Yuan, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unlike empathetic dialogues, the system in emotional support conversations (ESC) is expected to not only convey empathy for comforting the help-seeker, but also proactively assist in exploring and addressing their problems during the conversation. In this work, we study the problem of mixed-initiative ESC where the user and system can both take the initiative in leading the conversation. Specifically, we conduct a novel analysis on mixed-initiative ESC systems with a tailor-designed schema that divides utterances into different types with speaker roles and initiative types. Four emotional support metrics are proposed to evaluate the mixed-initiative interactions. The analysis reveals the necessity …

Artificial intelligence (AI) has elicited much attention across disciplines and industries (Hyder et al., Citation2019). AI has been defined as “a system’s ability to correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data, and to use those learnings to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation” (Kaplan & Haenlein, Citation2019, p. 15). AI has gone through several development stages and AI winters. In the first two decades (i.e., 1950s and 1960s), AI demonstrated success which included programs such as General Problem Solver (Newell et al., Citation1959) and ELIZA (Weizenbaum, Citation1966). However, limitations in processing capacity and reduced spending on …

Transfer-Once-For-All: Ai Model Optimization For Edge, Achintya Kundu, Laura Wynter, Rhui Dih Lee, Luis Angel Bathen Jul 2023

Transfer-Once-For-All: Ai Model Optimization For Edge, Achintya Kundu, Laura Wynter, Rhui Dih Lee, Luis Angel Bathen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Weight-sharing neural architecture search aims to optimize a configurable neural network model (supernet) for a variety of deployment scenarios across many devices with different resource constraints. Existing approaches use evolutionary search to extract models of different sizes from a supernet trained on a very large data set, and then fine-tune the extracted models on the typically small, real-world data set of interest. The computational cost of training thus grows linearly with the number of different model deployment scenarios. Hence, we propose Transfer-Once-For-All (TOFA) for supernet-style training on small data sets with constant computational training cost over any number of edge …

Generative Ai And Chatgpt Impact On Technostress Of Teachers, Xuenan Huo, Keng Siau Jul 2023

Generative Ai And Chatgpt Impact On Technostress Of Teachers, Xuenan Huo, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is a disruptive technology with significant impacts on education. While it has the potential to transform the delivery and accessibility of education, it can also undermine educational effectiveness by facilitating academic honesty and creating technostress for educators. This study aims to (i) evaluate the extent to which Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, brings technostress to teachers and (ii) how Generative AI changes teachers' professional identities and the technostress that results from such changes. We hypothesize that techno-eustress and techno-distress are determined by three types of self-discrepancies concerning professional identity construction: actual-ought, actual-ideal, and ought-ideal discrepancies. …

Recognizing Hand Gestures Using Solar Cells, Dong Ma, Guohao Lan, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu, B. Mushfika Upama, Ashraf Uddin, Youseef, Moustafa

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We design a system, SolarGest, which can recognize hand gestures near a solar-powered device by analyzing the patterns of the photocurrent. SolarGest is based on the observation that each gesture interferes with incident light rays on the solar panel in a unique way, leaving its discernible signature in harvested photocurrent. Using solar energy harvesting laws, we develop a model to optimize design and usage of SolarGest. To further improve the robustness of SolarGest under non-deterministic operating conditions, we combine dynamic time warping with Z-score transformation in a signal processing pipeline to pre-process each gesture waveform before it is analyzed for …

Mitigating Adversarial Attacks On Data-Driven Invariant Checkers For Cyber-Physical Systems, Rajib Ranjan Maiti, Cheah Huei Yoong, Venkata Reddy Palleti, Arlindo Silva, Christopher M. Poskitt Jul 2023

Mitigating Adversarial Attacks On Data-Driven Invariant Checkers For Cyber-Physical Systems, Rajib Ranjan Maiti, Cheah Huei Yoong, Venkata Reddy Palleti, Arlindo Silva, Christopher M. Poskitt

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The use of invariants in developing security mechanisms has become an attractive research area because of their potential to both prevent attacks and detect attacks in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). In general, an invariant is a property that is expressed using design parameters along with Boolean operators and which always holds in normal operation of a system, in particular, a CPS. Invariants can be derived by analysing operational data of various design parameters in a running CPS, or by analysing the system's requirements/design documents, with both of the approaches demonstrating significant potential to detect and prevent cyber-attacks on a CPS. While …

Augmenting Fake Content Detection In Online Platforms: A Domain Adaptive Transfer Learning Via Adversarial Training Approach, Ka Chung Ng, Ping Fan Ke, Mike K. P. So, Kar Yan Tam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online platforms are experimenting with interventions such as content screening to moderate the effects of fake, biased, and incensing content. Yet, online platforms face an operational challenge in implementing machine learning algorithms for managing online content due to the labeling problem, where labeled data used for model training are limited and costly to obtain. To address this issue, we propose a domain adaptive transfer learning via adversarial training approach to augment fake content detection with collective human intelligence. We first start with a source domain dataset containing deceptive and trustworthy general news constructed from a large collection of labeled news …

Duplicate Bug Report Detection: How Far Are We?, Ting Zhang, Donggyun Han, Venkatesh Vinayakarao, Ivana Clairine Irsan, Bowen Xu, Thung Ferdian, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang Jul 2023

Duplicate Bug Report Detection: How Far Are We?, Ting Zhang, Donggyun Han, Venkatesh Vinayakarao, Ivana Clairine Irsan, Bowen Xu, Thung Ferdian, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many Duplicate Bug Report Detection (DBRD) techniques have been proposed in the research literature. The industry uses some other techniques. Unfortunately, there is insufficient comparison among them, and it is unclear how far we have been. This work fills this gap by comparing the aforementioned techniques. To compare them, we first need a benchmark that can estimate how a tool would perform if applied in a realistic setting today. Thus, we first investigated potential biases that affect the fair comparison of the accuracy of DBRD techniques. Our experiments suggest that data age and issue tracking system choice cause a significant …

A Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Path Selection Scheme In Vanets, Guojun Wang, Huijie Yang Jul 2023

A Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Path Selection Scheme In Vanets, Guojun Wang, Huijie Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid development of edge computing, artificial intelligence and other technologies, intelligent transportation services in the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) such as in-vehicle navigation and distress alert are increasingly being widely used in life. Currently, road navigation is an essential service in the vehicle network. However, when a user employs the road navigation service, his private data maybe exposed to roadside nodes. Meanwhile, when the trusted authorization sends the navigation route data to the user, the user can obtain all the road data. Especially, other unrequested data might be related to the military. Therefore, how to achieve secure …

Proactive Conversational Agents In The Post-Chatgpt World, Lizi Liao, Grace Hui Yang, Chirag Shah Jul 2023

Proactive Conversational Agents In The Post-Chatgpt World, Lizi Liao, Grace Hui Yang, Chirag Shah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

ChatGPT and similar large language model (LLM) based conversational agents have brought shock waves to the research world. Although astonished by their human-like performance, we find they share a significant weakness with many other existing conversational agents in that they all take a passive approach in responding to user queries. This limits their capacity to understand the users and the task better and to offer recommendations based on a broader context than a given conversation. Proactiveness is still missing in these agents, including their ability to initiate a conversation, shift topics, or offer recommendations that take into account a more …

Forward/Backward And Content Private Dsse For Spatial Keyword Queries, Xiangyu Wang, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Yinbin Miao, Yang Liu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatial keyword queries are attractive techniques that have been widely deployed in real-life applications in recent years, such as social networks and location-based services. However, existing solutions neither support dynamic update nor satisfy the privacy requirements in real applications. In this article, we investigate the problem of Dynamic Searchable Symmetric Encryption (DSSE) for spatial keyword queries. First, we formulate the definition of DSSE for spatial keyword queries (namely, DSSESKQ) and extend the DSSE leakage functions to capture the leakages in DSSESKQ. Then, we present a practical DSSESKQ construction based on geometric prefix encoding inverted-index and encrypted bitmap. Rigorous security analysis …

Balancing Privacy And Flexibility Of Cloud-Based Personal Health Records Sharing System, Yudi Zhang, Fuchun Guo, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang Jul 2023

Balancing Privacy And Flexibility Of Cloud-Based Personal Health Records Sharing System, Yudi Zhang, Fuchun Guo, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Internet of Things and cloud services have been widely adopted in many applications, and personal health records (PHR) can provide tailored medical care. The PHR data is usually stored on cloud servers for sharing. Weighted attribute-based encryption (ABE) is a practical and flexible technique to protect PHR data. Under a weighted ABE policy, the data user's attributes will be “scored”, if and only if the score reaches the threshold value, he/she can access the data. However, while this approach offers a flexible access policy, the data owners have difficulty controlling their privacy, especially sharing PHR data in collaborative e-health …
